I know there’s quite a few fashion designers in Japan who are trying to bring back kimonos and traditional clothing back into style. I think it’d be cool if y’all took a look at their work and analyzed how they’ve modernized the fashion as well.

I just want to say, I did a lot of research for making an art piece based on the Taisho era, and I noted a lot of old photos of men and women wearing combinations of western shirts and pants and hats under their kimono, or wearing western style coats over their kimono, or otherwise mixing suit-and-tie clothes with kimono. It honestly only made me love the era more for the strangeness of how it was a thing that was, to my mind, something that would never happen, yet was a popular fashion that actually existed long ago.
I had certainly seen photos from the British contact period, of many japanese people wearing fully western clothes, and of western people wearing japanese clothes, and of people in both of these styles walking down historic japanese streets...
But I had never before seen people wearing a mixture of styles... talking fairly modern (for the time) telephones in front of trains, sitting beside traditional japanese architecture. Truly a fascinating blend of cultural ideas, and I hope the experimentation of style manages to make its way back into modern japanese culture.

And yes! I COULD picture you sitting in a park and reading a book in that outfit. 😊

this updating of styles looks like a natural and practical progression for traditional Japanese style clothing. And that HAT! It really suits you. I'm not sure about Japanese tradition, however, in 'western' countries, it was customary for gentlemen to remove their hats when entering a building and rude to not do so, (but not ladies because of hair do's etc). You don't really see it done now because not that many people wear hats anymore unless they need to, such as for sun protection and baseball caps don't seem to count.

Enjoyed this video as much as your other ones regarding men's kimonos, so thank you for the effort you've put into it. I'm going to visit Kyoto next year during late march and early april for 3 weeks as my very first trip to Japan. Since I'm planning to buy myself a own set of a men's kimono, I may use this as some sort of reference to choose if I may go for a more traditional style or a western style like you've shown here.

Its fun seeing the leather belt with a kimono. Its a bit full circle as jedi robes in Star Wars were very heavily inspired by Kimono back in the 70s on till present and it used a leather belt over an obi style belt wrap. So seeing a kimono worn with a wide leather belt reminds me of that a bit

The Hakama became more popular when public schools started introducing modern desk-chairs. Male students started wearing Umanori-Hakama and female students started wearing Ando-Bakama. This was primarily done for modesty’s sake, so students didn’t have to worry about flashing their legs and crotch when sitting in western style chairs.
