Hey, Shogo! Today I learned that there is a thing called "forbidden colors" in Japan. I heard that peasants were not allowed to wear bright colors meant for higher status people, but when I googled it in English on UA-cam I couldn't find a single video on this topic. I also heard that this thing was so obscure not even all Japanese people know of it, and I am certainly hearing it for the first time. Is there any chance you could make a video on it?

I think there’s something similar to this is some of the ancient western countries. Purple was a really hard to get color, only found in India I think (Idk, I remember Indigo… India?), so to get it you either needed to walk on land or boat. Now, if you walked on land you had to walk every far over dangerous lands and risk getting mugged, while if you boated you would risk getting attacked by pirates or getting caught on rocks. Because of this, Purple was reserved for royalty only, and if commoners wore it they would be stoned to death.
Idk, Just something random I thought I’d share. I would love to hear the “Japanese version” of this.

There were many laws about who could wear what, not just in terms of colors, but also fabrics, types of dying, and even what could be used for linings! (No purple or silk for you! You can use red here, but not here...No kanoko knots!) These varied by rank/class and time period, and they even sent out detectives to find out who was flaunting the laws in private! Can't have mere merchants wearing the same kimono as samurai! There are a number of books that cover this, but I'm not sure what is currently in print or available on the internet.

I loved this video and I agree with you - that would be cool. I imagine that the shorter male "kimono" (they may be called something else) could easily be worn with ordinary trousers or even jeans, and could potentially be used less tightly closed as a jacket. They could actually be adapted to have the side slit, to allow ties to be incorporated so that an additional belt was not required. Actually, it occurs to me that the female Kimono could have ties added so that perhaps the elastic back belt was replaced. Never mind, just let me entirely redesign all your national dress 🙄😃

So reassuring to see that the blending of Japanese and Western clothes is becoming popular - a full kimono outfit is a bit beyond me at present! Thank you! ❤️

Unusual for a gaijin, I've been wearing kimono since I was 7, since my parents had many Japanes friends, and can wear it like like a "professional." I started collecting vintage kimono in the '80's because I loved their artistry. But 30 years ago, I started getting creative. playing mix-and-match with Western clothing, because I wanted to wear Japanese clothing all the time! I've done all these variations, and also wear obi with Western dresses or in place of a belt, and wear haori like jackets. It looks like the rest of the world is catching up with me, and I love it!

This was wonderful! Thank you and the ladies so much. I am bigger than most Japanese, but I dearly love to wear kimono and finding one that will go all the way around me and have the proper overlap is very, very difficult. My solution was to purchase a skirt that matches one of the colors of the kimono and so it's what shows (instead of the juban) should the kimono flap open too much. Apparently, I'm more in fashion than I realized.

I was worried it was kinda frowned upon to wear kimono in a more casual way or not the ''proper'' way, so seeing this video I'm glad to hear Japanese women think wearing a kimono can be difficult too at times and it's okay to incorporate other items! Wow that's so cool! Clothes in general are some of my favorite aspects to cultural diversity and seeing these mix ups is just so incredibly interesting. Especially for poeple like me who are extremely into aesthetics of clothing as a whole.
That was an awesome video and also one of my favorite ones you've made so far because I did not only learn so much interesting stuff about tradtional japanese clothing but we also got such a cool look into what the combination of cultur can look like. It just let's the imagination run wild, thinking of all the possibilities.
It would be so awesome to see more like this. I really hope there will be something like this for men's waer too, that would be sooooo interesting. Like you could just make a whole series of videos like this.
Keep it up guys. Stay safe and well.

Really love this video. I love the fashion of taisho era, and I have seen friends dressing up with a mix of japanese traditional clothes and western fashion like the bowler hat, etc, for many years so this feel very comfortable to me. They were influenced by the street fashion in japan as well as the fashion taisho era. ALso, because my country is too hot and we cannot wear too many layers

This video is amazing I love all the different styles! But I'm curious about similar looks like these but masculine ones instead, that would be cool to learn about!

What would be really cute, would to wear the blouse as in the last style, and the skirt like in the second style.

I prefer the Hakama, at least I can move unlike the more formal one. Would love to try it once I come back to Japan.
