This is what I miss the most whenever my family visits Japan! Got lucky our 1st BnB was near a secondhand kimono store. Mom & I were beyond shocked since majority of the kimono were on sale for ¥1,000! Now we make it a point to find kimono thrift shops & bring an empty luggage 😆💕 thanks for your informative videos! Now we can research & know what to add to our collections!

I got a nice haul recently myself getting a total of 9 obis and 5 kimonos (1iromuji with crest!) for under $100. Its definitely good digging through secondhand goods on the auction sites

I went Kimono shopping in Tokyo in Kyoto. In Tokyo I went into normal Secondhand Shops that had Kimono sections (it was a chain store called Chicago and I went into two different branches). The Kimono there were a bit pricier than I thought they would be, but I got my first Kimono and Obi there :) In Kyoto I went into Kimono Secondhand Shops and in one of them, they had super cheap Kimono, Yukata and Obi. Thankfully I didn't just blindly buy them (though my heart sometimes screamed "Just pay for them and leave, before anyone sees this treasure). Instead I looked at them more closely and found a lot of stains (since they are my first few Kimono and Obi I didn't just yet trust myself to be able to remove the stains). In the end I still found a Kimono and three Obi that were in good condition and still very cheap. :D The cheap Kimono and Obi were hidden on the second floor and a lot of them had a price between 1,000 Yen and 2,000 Yen. :D When I paid for all the things I chose (which was a lot XD) the owner actually gifted me a very beautiful koshihimo (at least I think it is a koshihimo ^^)

Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately we don’t have Chicago on Kyushu... at least not in Kumamoto. But I recommend always to look closely to everything you find interesting. That’s why I don’t buy too much in such stores. I put many things back, because their condition is worse than at first sight.

A three dimensional embroidery for the white silk demask . A kimono with 3D embroidery with silk painting to enhance the embroidery subject. Maybe a long term project. I have to get myself to Kyoto For Kimono.🤞🏼👘

    Dang, my favorite store, Hard-off!!!
    ハードオフに売りに行こう、ハードオフに売りに行こう♪
Idk why but I always become cheap about obijime and I don’t really like all of the obijime I own. It could be really helpful if you make videos for must buy color! (I’ve watched your coordination video!)
I found a male nagajuban for my husband but I’m not confident enough to put it on him 😂

I usually buy kimonos at eBay auctions, but it sometimes a gamble. Also I didn’t know hitoe was rare and dorozome actually dyed with mud 😯 I thought it was just about the color 😅

Dear Billy, first thank you for your videos, they are all so informative and useful and you are so sweet and nice. It's a pleasure to watch them. I have a little kimono collection and some days ago just arrived my latest purchase. It was defined as kurotomesode from the seller but I'm quite sure it is not, as yuzen design is on shoulder and chest too so maybe could it be a bride furiosode? I would love to have your opinion if you don't mind. It has 5 komon, black background and it's painted on the lower part both outside and inside with waves, fans, and flowers. The only thing that confuses me is that the sleeves are not long as furisode ones usually are.. ( less than 60cm). Looking forward to hearing from you.

So informative and aesthetic ! I will have to follow along in learning before my Kyoto trip next week! Can't wait to try thrifting, glad I learned about the other layers and measuring tape tip. Though I mostly am interested in yukata but saw in another video you prepared layering your yukata and kimono, would that be okay to do in Kusatsu Onsen?

Really nice video again, thank you Billy! Can't wait to get to Kyoto in 3 weeks and go through some flea markets (at least Kitano Tenmangû market should fit my schedule)! 🤗 At some point, would you mind making a video about Ginza musubi (or tsunodashi)? I never get it look nice and round.... 🤔 Always too flat.

Another fun video! Looking forward to the flee market video. I noticed that the second hand kimono shopping was cheaper The further from Kyoto or the super touristy places. The best quality for my dollar has been Nara and Himeji, and the shops were off the beaten track. I bought my first kimono in Nara, a wool blend and in mint condition for $30.
Chicago is good to get your feet wet into kimonos and their accessories, but yes I noticed they are more expensive then what you can find in non-tourist focused kimono stores. I bought a way too small synthetic kimono (kimonos are not one size fits all) from Chicago for $60. It’s my least favorite one I own but I keep it to dress my petite friends.
Billy, do you know the name of a thrift store chain in the Kansai or southern part of japan? How about a kimono accessory store?
    Thank you!

    • @BillyMatsunaga
      @BillyMatsunaga  4 роки тому +1

Keith Virgin thank you so much ❤️❤️ Nara is awesome! I also prefer you g shopping there. Kyoto is super expensive. I guess it’s because they have more ppl there who are interested in kimono and so the stores are more expensive.
Unfortunately we don’t have Chicago in Kyushu... 😭 so i have to stick with the basics 五番街 and オフハウス. But they have nice stuff there.
