Yukatas are probably helping keeping kimono culture alive in Japan. Being made of less expensive materials that doesn’t stain as easily, people in Japan are probably less apprehensive to spend money on them and wear them in public.

I never wore any kind of kimono, but from what I understand, they’re easier to put on yourself while formal silk kimonos usually require help from kimono experts.
Formal kimonos, especially for women, usually require many accessories like the obijime cord wrapped around the obi belts that the yukata obi doesn’t require. Yukatas are also usually shorter so they’re easier to walk in than formal kimonos that are up to the ankles and tightly wrapped around the legs.
It really depends actually. Alot of young people in Japan are too afraid of "standing out" by wearing 和服wafuku. However expensive western brands are not seen that way, so it is actually a very complicated issue because really kimono that are not for special occasions are just fashion and plenty of cheaper materials are used now. I wear kimono everyday and people do not stare and will not make you feel uncomfortable. In short kimono is tradition and fashion and i hope Japanese people and foreigners both wear more often.

I absolutely love it when experts nerd out about the small details that they don't get to talk about often like the story of how the style changes over the course of time. I could watch a tangent on that for hours
As a bit of a kimono fan, this was an excellent two part series. Some really interesting answers since the most we often hear about kimono's these days is kimono in a historical context.
I'm a girl and I wish I could wear a man's kimono because it looks easier to put on and it looks a lot less tight than a woman's kimono or yukata
I have been wearing kimono casually as part of my wardrobe for a while now. In the beginning, it was Sunao-sensei who not only helped me learn how to put it on exactly the way I want to, she also has a very open perspective that makes wearing kimono less daunting a and more fun. Now I wear them out all the time and experiment with different stylings. Sunao-sensei is incredible! I watch her videos even if I’m not putting on kimono 😂💖
A number of years ago I stayed with a friend who used Hakama as bath robes. They were incredibly comfortable and the reason why I now own a summer kimono that I'll wear casually around the house. Men's clothing is so typically boring that finding outfits that are both stylish and comfortable is something of a treasure for me.

Her comments about ohashori were really interesting. One of the reasons I, as a tall foreigner, am so reluctant to wear kimono outside is that the only ones I can afford are vintage and therefore often not long enough for me to make a proper ohashori (thanks to her, now I understand that even people back then didn't bother with ohashori!). I don't want people to think that I'm not wearing ohashori because I don't know how to dress myself properly. :( I will check out her channel though; I would love to learn more about how to properly match fabric patterns to the seasons and colour coordination.
I think hakama is totally cool and guys totally look sooooo cool wearing kimono! Hopefully they get to wear it more often

This was wonderful to watch and read your words of these subjects. I agree with you that the more I learn about kimono and different types of woven fabrics, the more fabric and knowledge I want. I quilt, but I can not cut up a kimono to use in a quilt, so I will continue to look for old kimonos and old fabrics from Japan that have been saved for me to love and sew wit.

Kimonos are incredibly fashinating and elegant, both for men and women. When I visited Japan I had a lesson about kimono wearing and tea ceremony. It has been an incredible experience, which still today I suggest to any friend. I think it is also a wonderful way to lear more about Japanese culture, sense of beauty and harmony. Moreover, it was very confortable also for an European like me. I love them! Please, export kimono culture also in Italy!
What is the website that you recommend for buying kimono
I watched both parts and what was said and 'between the lines' needs additional time for me to carefully think through. However, with the styling part (especially with the 'first date' one!) it made me imagine what it would be like back in history when perhaps a Mother was styling the kimono for their daughter for the equivalent of a first date (maybe a rare 'before marriage meet' with at minimum a chaperone). I would like to see how someone would dress another, using items that might be used to assist etc (such as a historical version of the clips!).
I'm imagining the punk shows I've been to, only everyone wearing kimono, it's quite a mental picture 😁

I think that the hardest part about obtaining kimono currently is that many kimono sites do not have hip size or a filter for it. As someone who has had many weight fluctuations including obesity, at times, I do not fit the standard kimono. In order for me to get the right size, I have to go through item after item and, on certain sites, calculate it from ushiromigoro and maemigoro, which can be overwhelming to someone who is new to kimono. Learning how to do the calculations and understanding what the numbers mean, I feel, is hard to find online, especially, if the words are new to someone. I even know some websites that have the mae/ushiro haba or migoro in the diagram, but front/post width in the description in the kimono, assuming the customer will put the two together. It makes me miss ichiroya so terribly for the fact that I could filter a kimono from everything to a color on the color wheel to what size would best fit me. Also, the diagrams of the condition were meticulous.

You mentioned women wearing mens kimono, is it possible to wear kimono in a genderless way, or say wear a womens kimono in a more masculine way or a mens kimono in a more feminine way, (ie add the ohashori or wear a nagoya obi, ect.) [I do understand that womens kimono are designed to be worn with the émon and can be uncomfortable if worn without émon]
Or could you mix and match parts of both kimono to make what you like best?
I went to Kimono-Sunao's site to find out if it's possible to tie an obi by yourself, among other things a beginning kimono wearer should know. Unfortunately, I don't read calligraphy and don't speak Japanese. There are no English sub-titles.
Please, wear can I find a knowledgeable and easily understood beginner's dressing guide for a solo woman?
I'm also hoping the question of what is worn underneath the juban will be discussed. And now that masks have become a part of daily dressing, will they reflect the colors, patterns and accessories that yukata/kimono do?

I'm a sumo fan, and one of my favorite types of UA-cam videos are those of rikishi arriving at the basho venue. It's cool that they always wear traditional Japanese dress when in public. My favorites are the ones filmed in July and September when the weather is warm and all the colorful yukata appear. I am especially fond of Ura's pink zebras and Tobizaru's banana yellow with monkeys.
Same! Ura's porcupine kimono is awesome too! I love how he really embraces bright colours and cool designs. Ishiura has an impressive custom made kimono with a demon on it.
@@PallasAthene12 I think I remember Ishiura's. It is way cool. Ura seems like such a fun, wholesome person. He is always smiling and is so polite. It's too bad he had a poor March basho. He will rally to entertain us all in May. I hope Ishiura will be fully recovered from his neck injury.

@@LauraJdogmom Yes, I too am a huge fan of Ura (I love Tobizaru and his monkey themed kimono too). They both seem like nice guys. Ura is doing really well considering his injury history and seems to be learning how to change his style to compensate. Hopefully he'll do better in Natsu.
For real, designing rikishi fabrics would be amazing. I love how the patterns often make reference to the components of their shikona. Some of them are so imaginative.

I really appreciate the bit about "women" wearing "male" clothing. In my own culture, I wouldn't blink twice and simply wear what I please, but I take care with cultures I may insult in some manner with my rashness. I'm not a woman but I can be perceived that way rather easily so I'd simply wear my own culture's more androgynous wear if it were a huge deal. I personally love plain colors without flair etc etc. I find the hakama increddddibly cool compared to the kimono with elaborate designs and embroidery, and luckily I'm flat enough that adjustments shouldn't be much of a deal. I really enjoy how casually they skimmed over that topic since, imo, fabric ain't meant to be gendered.

Yes, but I found out that it’s not a negative thing. I love to wear my kimono while out and about and a lot of people love it when they see me. Especially if I use my wagasa on a sunny day.

what's the point with the cool socks?
The tabi socks? When wearing kimono I find shoes like geta and zouri to be a lot easier to put on and take off than any other shoes. Such traditional shoes are thonged and you need to have a space between the big toe and the rest of the toes to wear them. Normal socks are not compatible.
