Repairing and Refinishing a Water Damaged MCM Dresser

- My competitive nature came out too strong when shopping an online estate sale, and I didn't quite realize how much the fees and taxes would add up on this dresser. The pictures also didn't adequately show how much water damage and scratches were on the top. I learned some valuable lessons and feel like I did the dresser justice. I hope you do as well. Thanks for watching!

Oh WOW! I agree that it would have been nice to restore to original but dang girl, you nailed this!! I am in love with the cabinet color and against that the wood drawers and pulls are stunning! Thank you so much for taking us through your journey and the problems you encountered. It always helps to see and understand “real life” situations and yes it would have been nice to have more of a profit but this was one heck of a learning project that your audience appreciates and learns along with you. For the piece I think you did an outstanding job! I too love online auctions they are sort of addicting though 😊
Thank you for such a kind, thoughtful and encouraging comment, Kim! My goal is to help others learn alongside me - to see both the good and the bad. You are so right - the auctions can be addictive! I still have several items from auction, but I have stayed away lately.😅
It came out gorgeous.
Thanks so much!!🥰
Gorgeous. Well done.
Thank you very much!💜
Your struggle was real, but damn girl, you nailed it! It's gorgeous 😍.
Aww thanks, Tina!💜💜
The furniture flipping struggle is real!!! Another stunning piece!! Keep keeping it real, because that just how it honestly it goes!
Hahaha so true!😅 Thank you so much, glad you loved it!💜
Great video and appreciate you keeping in the bits that didn’t go so well. End result is lovely!
Sometimes the bubbled veneer can be fixed by using a dry iron (dry cloth and no steam) rather than steaming a damp cloth. It depends on the glue type and how deteriorated it is. Less is more - if you heat (or steam) too much, you can remove the veneer completely. Once you have heated enough to get it down, clamp a flat block over it and leave it to cool. Any moisture with particle board will give you problems. Solid wood substrates are a little more forgiving.
Thank you, that is very helpful. I appreciate you taking the time to do that!
Love how this came out. Beautifully done!
Thanks so much, Veronica!💜
Love it!!
Thank you!! So glad you like it!
This looks great, you did a great job working with what you got 😍👏 Furniture flipping is rarely easy or straight forward 😂 Subscribed, and looking forward to seeing more 🤩👏
Hahaha SO true! It certainly keeps you on your toes.😅 Thanks so much for subscribing!💜💜
Great job! Thanks for showing us the sometimes painful process. You saved this piece and it has a beautiful new life. On to the next!
Thank you! Yes, on to the next indeed!😅😀
BEAUTIFUL
Aww, thank you, Kay!💜
Wowowow! You are giving me ideas. I got a nice set. The dresser is fine but the night stand is bubble city. I'm sad the iron didn't work... But maybe I can do this combo!
Thank you, Melody! I hope it was helpful and yours works out. If not, I’m sure you could totally do this combo! Thanks for watching.💜
Wow I’ve never seen that technique used on water damaged veneer
I was a little afraid to try it, but have seen a few others do it with success. Maybe next time it will for me if I need to try it again.
I like to “wet sand” with 600 grit before my last coat. Silky smooth.
Thanks for the suggestion. I have heard of people wet sanding, but I haven’t researched it much. I need to look into it more. Appreciate you watching and commenting.💜
Love the black top! Another beautiful job!!
Thank you, Kimbra!☺️
Appreciate your honesty! This is hard work!
Thanks, Danielle! My hope with the channel is to be honest about my wins and losses. It surely is hard work. Addictive, too.😂
The reason ur poly bubbles is bc poly cannot be over stroked with a brush. Best way is to brush in one smooth stroke in one direction and avoid repeat strokes as that can remove poly
Good to know, thank you!
Great job! I'm wondering if your grain was so pronounced due to the wet rag raising the gran again after you sended...😊 Using mineral spirits instead won't raise the wood grain. Love this piece!!!
Thanks, I will try that in the future! Glad you loved it.😊
I think you should add some legs. That will elevate it so much
Thanks, Annetta. I agree. I failed to mention that I considered it, but adding the necessary support pieces would’ve been really tricky bc of the brace pieces that were already in the corners. I didn’t feel up to the challenge.😅 My next video/piece I will be adding them tho!
