I don’t think I have the willpower to do this much stripping and sanding. Those antique pieces have so many nooks and crannies. But I’m glad that you do and were able to restore this piece. It truly is beautiful. And you have my favorite book on top. Jane Eyre. Good job.
Whew, it was a lot of sanding. I just found some new brush attachments that might help with some of the details. We’ll see. Jane Eyre is my favorite book! 🤩
Sitting here watching a sister furniture rescuer work her magick as my hands ache from stripping an old dresser yesterday. Those spindles... OMG, the WORK you had to do to get that finish off! At some point do you stop and wonder if you could find new, unfinished legs and just replace them? It's cheating, I know, but all those curves and crevasses make me reach for the ibuprofen. Anyway, BEAUTIFUL results, thanks to your talent and perseverance!
Oh gosh, right?! I need a sander with those foam pads to work the spindles better. I got an attachment for my Festool and that seems to help. I also picked up some abrasive brushes that I attach to my drill and they are helping too. Anything to reduce the hand sanding. 🙌🏼😅
You're right on the age of this dresser, and to share some info I was told by an antiques seller I met, re: dates on mirrors - they can occasionally be misleading, because mirrors can be broken and replaced over time, and the replacement could say one date while the furniture is actually older. An additional contrary fact: most of the time, furniture companies make the furniture but buy the mirrors from a different company, so it has also happened that they buy the mirrors in bulk for a better price, and sometimes the mirrors can sit for years before being used, which, if dated, could indicate that the piece is older than it actually is. I thought that was pretty interesting when I found it out and I always have to talk about it when the subject comes up lol. I'm not meaning to correct you or anything, just some fun info!
It was! 🫠 I just bought some brush attachments that I hope will help with those fine details. Yeah, the caster wheels were new for me. It’s always fun taking things apart and trying to figure it out
Beautiful work! I'm glad you went with one colour instead of the two-tone look. It's such a sturdy, well-made piece. Nothing made currently can compare.
Lisa I love that you show us the good the bad and the ugly. I mean, you don’t make it to appear to happen over night. It is a long process to get to that final result. This turned out so beautifully. Thank you for all that you do. Why do you not have at least 100k subscribers? We need to all check to make sure we are subscribed. ✌🏻🤍🤞🏽
Lovely! So, I'm guessing that the original two-tone look was the result of stain, not inlay? I see walnut and walnut veneer in your piece, and when I initially saw the two-tone finish, I thought that the lighter part might be a gum wood inlay. Frequently furniture manufacturers of that era used gum wood because it looked like the sap wood of a walnut tree. I encountered that a few years back when i was restoring a 1920s four-poster bed and ladies vanity. I know first hand how you had to fight to remove that original finish! Anyway, I prefer the way your dresser looks now. It's gorgeous and I know it'll move quickly
I was thinking the same thing, but after I stripped it, it ended up being the same tone of wood. That’s why I decided to just stain it all the same color and it took the stain uniformly. That finish was tough to remove 😩 Thanks Charlene! 🫶
Another 🅰️➕️➕️➕️ on this creative work. I definitely think this could go for $1,500. I don't really know from nothing. But I would pay $1,500 for this 97 year old beauty. Brava!
This is BEAUTIFUL Lisa. Your a great woman for getting all that sanding done! 💪🏻 I’m not sure I’d have had to patience. 😂 but I’m so glad you did. What a change. 😍😍
That was a lot of work but it looks beautiful. I have a piece right now that I’m going to do that has that to town and I was hoping to see how you put that second color on without getting it onto the first but I see you just did it all in one color which looks good. The piece I’m going to redo has black around the edge so I’m going to keep the two colors. Absolutely love that peel and stick, “ pimpernel“ by William Morris. I have curtains in my kitchen out of that exact print. Nice that you went with an older classic print instead of a modern print. Well done.
I considered keeping the two tone, but after I stripped the whole piece it ended up being the same tone and I liked it. Oh yes, I love William Morris. I think the strawberry is my favorite 😍

Beautiful peice to work on... love the legs. Like the color .. I prefer a not so red under tone to my stains. Love the print of liner. Amazing results.

Topcoats are tough. Oil based poly is good but you can’t just reapply it. That’s what I like about the hard wax oil. There’s a little protocol like cleaning and a scuff sand and you can reapply it and totally refresh the finish. That’s why I like it. I have a side table that has been exposed to heat and moisture and it’s doing good but it’s only been a few months. They use Osmo on butcher block counters in kitchens, so I feel pretty confident it would hold up.
For that application, I would recommend 3 coats and using a white light abrasive pad. It lays down more product than a rag. Their Instagram feed has some videos on it.
What is the cleaning maintenance protocol on these oil finished furniture pieces?
Dampened microfiber cloth. The fabulous thing about the finish is it can be lightly sanded and the oil can be reapplied if there is damage later on instead of having to strip the finish.
