- Опубліковано 4 січ 2025
- This short video is about a 1983 Brabham BMW BT52 F1 car I saw and recorded during the 2017 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
Designed by Gordon Murray it features a turbocharged BMW M12/13 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine which was able to produce around 650hp at 9,500 rpm in race trim (around 800hp during qualifying) and 450Nm of torque.
The BT52 was driven by Riccardo Patrese and Nelson Piquet who won the 1983 championship with this car.

4 cylinders but sounds way better than the v6 turbo we have nowadays
I4's in general usually sound better than V6's IMO, but the modern V6 Turbos in todays F1's still sound amazing in person
V6T can still sound good though, like the Lotus 97t
Of course, I don't think there has ever been a bad sounding F1 car
The actual F1 have tons of restrictions, it could easily sound way better, yet hearing them in person is not that bad at all.
If F1 made same short stroke layout as 1000cc motorbikes have they will would even better than this BMW 1.5 4cyl
Piquet once told that in qualifying this car had more than 1300hp !
A real beast!
Arthur Peres apparently it had 1500
One of the most difficult cars to handle. It seems like completely "wooden" thing. From the outside at least. Piquet was a hero to drive this on the limit.
it made 1060hp at 5 bar on the dyno, in qualifying they turned it up to 5.5 bar which are over 1400 calculated hp
Why is everyone in this thread mentioning wrong hp numbers?
@@Rottensteam what are the real numbers? The 1000hp/liter for only a few laps is historical.
Hey Bozzy. Those things sound very laggy initially, but when the boost hits, hold on tight. I bet those cars are frightening as hell to drive at full tilt. So much power from a 1.5L it's almost unbelievable. Thanks for continuously pumping out the great footage, sir. Cheers!
yeah, that's what it seems, there's little acceleration initially, then there comes everything and they're immediately forced to upshift! Either that or that's just how that driver likes to drive that car...
Thanks as always Mick for your comments! ;D
Just saw this engine pop up on Instagram and saw +1000hp from a 4 cyl and thought wow! Then came here and found out it's only a 1.5! Incredible!
The benetton b186 threw out ~1500 hp at 5.6 turbo boost and kept pushing
also remember it was in the 80s so turbo lag was a bitch back then. we have so much diffrent tech to reduce turbo lag now so i wounder how these would run with som modern anti turbo lag tech
A four banger the sounds way better than Today's v6 hybrid turbo cars
We need hybrid 4 banger

@@JotaV2502 Sorry but this one just sounds more F1 and ironically it only revvs up to 9000RPM. Imagine with todays technology it would revv up up to 14000rpm or more
and 1.5 LITERS!!!!
@@omoghosty5777 what are you talking about "sounds more like f1", the sound is such an overrated aspect in this sport, the only thing that should matter is the quality of the racing.
Gorgeous piece of engineering! Makes me proud to be a Brabham.
Are you related to Jack? Or just a coincidence?
@@rileyberkowitz I am not related to him. However, my dad’s name is David and he has met David and Geoff Brabham at races in the 90’s.
@@DerekBrabham99 That's awesome! It's cool to have Brabham as a last name, I'm jealous haha
@@rileyberkowitz The only downside is no one can pronounce it haha.
@@DerekBrabham99 Lol yeah, I could imagine
This car is from 1983. I just find it incredible how they could squeeze 800 HP out of a 4-cylinder.
1500hp, they detuned it when not in quali mode
Big fuckin’ turbo, high pressure and 12000RPM redline
thats BMW for you
I wonder how big exactly.. i heard truck turbos, older fighter jet turbos..
@@MrSir-kj1gy No, that was in later years, not yet in 1983.
Imagine trying to get this beast around a track like Monaco?? Balls of Steel required.
JayRicci7891 apparently to get a more linear acceleration , drivers would start going full throttle as earlier as corner entry so by corner exit turbo was on
@@ferrarikingdom Not so easy. You can't just push throttle one or two sec before and you are fine. Car will spin as soon as turbo hits. Drivers used a popping throttle technique to keep revs high for exit in slow corners.
So no full throttle. You can test it in simulator.
Imagine this engine with the anti-lag set-up from the rally cars.😮
Imagine if we had this sound quality on TV back in the 1980s...
And i can proudly say, i have touched that engine and the car (with permission) at the OGP ;)
I've touched the enigne in the museum in Munich
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL CAR EVER
The Turbos of the 80is were the real F1 sound!
Otro comentario cliché 😴😴
Still think that's the best looking F1 car ever made... Crazy to think that that engine went on to develop 1400+ bhp!!!
It didn't make 1400+ hp
@@Rottensteam during qualifying the same engine was used in the benetton b186 and they cranked the boost pressure so high that it generated 1400hp, sometimes 1500.
@@oranges866 no. It peaked at 1350 hp.
Stop making those numbers up.
@@Rottensteam "For 1986, the M12 was upgraded into the M12/13/1. (Bore 89.2 mm X Stroke 60 mm) 374.95 cc and 350 PS per cylinder 933.46 PS/litre This version was claimed to have produced a maximum output of 1,400-1,500 hp (1,044-1,119 kW) @ 11,000 rpm, and about 850-930 lb⋅ft (1,152-1,261 N⋅m) of torque in qualifying trim, which would make it the most powerful engine ever to race in Formula 1, turbocharged or otherwise."

I think this is the best sounding 4 cylinder engine I ever heard. It sounds raw and powerful
Has to be the most difficult engine in F1 history to get the most out of, but boy is it one of the coolest. A tiny 4 cylinder motor with a massive single turbo strapped to it, creating possibly the worst turbo lag I’ve ever seen! I want to drive it🤣
most difficult? bmw simply used the base of their standard 4 cylinder engine and boosted it like crazy! no magic - just good engineering and fucking solid internals😊❤
@@hella6892well solid enough to last a single lap lol
Amazing how small those are when you stand near one. Must be crazy inside the cockpit at speed. Thanks!
Golden era of Motorsport, I wish they were still designing engines like this
imagine going full gas in these things, the amount of correction you would do would be insane
Maybe, even with tons of down force from the spoiler.
@@payneinthebutt3098 Not really a lot of downforce. F1 cars of this era relied mostly on mechanical grip up until the 2000s when they actually started investing into aero development.
@@floww2953 I think that became more of a focus after the introduction of grooved tyres in 1998
Aerodynamics were quite primitive in 1983, so they were focussing on a big rear wing to stabilise the car, and generating as much mechanical grip as possible.
Is that Pierluigi Martini driving the car??
You can hear the boost come in and driver let's off like wtf that machine is amazing wow wow
This is a really-really nice sound for just 4 cylinders!...
Macchina rarissima da vedere e sentire. Grazie per il video !
Di nulla Samuel!
Crazy to me that my slow and low e21 in my garage shares engines with this beast!! Amazing!!
Amazing to think that this same motor would become the most powerful in F1 only a few years later. Less displacement than my Cooper S with 6 times the horsepower...from the ‘80s!
MAGNIFICENT!!! That was magical F1 season during '80es...
The turbos of those days where insane tbh idc about lag it gave these machines more character
Not only insanely powerful but a beautiful clean profile unlike the abortions racing today. Nice one Brabham.
When they start making four-cylinder supercars, hopefully they sound like this
As soon as the turbo kicked in he backed off that thing looks dangerously fast
That is a F1 not the today's bullshit... Missing those days.
F1 has become bullshit since 1989 with the introduction of the semi-automatic gearbox.
Modern cars are too easy to drive honestly. Yet these gamers of today has the audacity to call themselves "F1 drivers"
Great video bozzy! Two great motorsport names in one video, gotta love the old Brab Beamers!!
Thanks Jake! :)
Amazing machine. Very beautiful design.
Ah, the Turbo era! It was crazy.
Those sensational claims about 1500bhp of the engine in the BT52 have been copied over and over. But they are incorrect. This car from 1983 had "only" 850bhp in qualification and 650 in the race. But by 1986, the BMW engine was capable of a theoretical 1400bhp in qualifying in the Brabham BT55 and the Benetton.
Race and qualifying reports by Murray Walker and James Hunt can easily found on UA-cam and confirm this. If still in doubt, just check the wikipedia page about this matter.
Piquet just remembered in a Podcast, that in 1984 in qualis the BMW had around 400HP more plus soft tires, reaching 1400HP! The thing could reach 370 to 380 km/h in Monza.
I love that car
Te best sound! The best car! The most beautiful that era...😎
You can really hear how much it struggles without the low down torque of the v6's and 8's but as soon as that turbine gets up to speed it sings haha.
Cant wait for V4 biturbos
Amazing! Don't hide anything from us Bozz 😎👈👉
hahahah
Amazing video 🤙🏎
Thank you!
I wish we had rules that make F1 cars look like this now.
Awesome old engine blocks, peed on for a year at least 😂
While I love the modern V6 engines they used today, I still love an engine that sounds like it wants to race, like those V-10s
this engine only goes to 12k rpm, imagine an inline 4 like this that has 20k rpm redline, thats what they should do if they cant afford to bring back v10s cause a high rpm inline 4 sounds wayyy better than a v6. just search up cbr 250 20k rpm sounds
Gotta love a good 4 banger. Bozzy, is it louder than the current V6 F1 cars?
El futuro de la F1
0:21 that idle sounds like a 2 stroke engine almost, anyone that heard the sound of a DKW, or an early 1960's Saab will know what I mean.
Nelsoooonn piqueeett do Braaaassiiilll🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
i do not remember if it was this exact engine but i was astonished to see on the tv how high in RPM a BMW engine could go and how fast it reached the highest RPM threshold
Like no inertia Unbelievable the level of technology that they reached
Almost 1000 hp per litre. This engine is from outer space.

I have a lot of fun with "this" car in rFactor.
El bt52 una bestia absoluta
Yknow if F1 winds up going to four cylinders, if they wind up sounding like this I think we're gonna be quite alright
They should make an in-line 5 F1. It would sound EXACTLY like a V10.
bolt a ginormous turbo onto it like this beast and you got a recipe for insanity
Omg YES
That turbo lag have me thinking evo sti haha love it
would be so way fresh to own one of those iconic monsters.
If it had around 1400 HP in qualifyings, it means around 350 HP per cylinder... Some crazy numbers for sure.
Not this car. You're probably referring to the Brabham BMW BT55 from 1986.
@@geertdewilde8582 Indeed, I confused them.
It’s the BT55 and Benetton B186 from 1986 that those numbers applied to - when they cranked it up to 4.0 bar and shut the waste gates off for qualifying. But running those specs could wreck the engine
image a inline 3 cylinder 1.4liter engine back then compeating against the inline 1.5liter inlin4 4 or 1.5liter inline 3 f1 power etc.
How the fuck did they manage to push 1350 HP out of 1.5l, holy shit
1000psi of boost
Great things happen when you mix boost and toluene.
What a high-rpm turbo kick! Wonder how would it go if BMW came up with something like Lancia did with Triflux, which would have made the engine more predictable and more responsive.
Vicious
The driver maked a mistake at turn the car. The turbo sound is very cool!
Insane peak grip
sounds like a superbike
Ya got 1450 horse power there, get them tires spinning boy!!
Estimates for the M12 are 1350 max and that was in '86. BT52 had 850 hp in qualifying and 640 in race trim.
@@on_wheels_80
Were do you have these figures?
That thing was estimated to have around 1500hp, however nobody knew for sure. After they actually could measure the power they figured that the engine was capable of 1450 hp. The engine had over 1000 hp on qualification labs and around 900 hp on races.
Wiki, ultimatecarpage and even the description of this video. Formula1 com states "could approach 1,000bhp in qualifying trim". Careful with not mixing up different engine evolutions. Power exploded in the early 80s and peaked in 85 and 86 with the M12 in the 86 Benetton. Look for the 86 Adelaide Qualifying video. The engine revs higher and sounds and smokes like a lot more boost there.
On Wheels You can hear the driver in this video hitting boost and spinning wheels then backing off instantly :D Way too much power for this track to even show off..
One thing that could very well be is that they actually put a more powerful evolution of the engine into this car where it originally never was. Still, 640 hp on a 540 kilo is probably enough to make it spin up like that anyway :)
imagine these cars with modern turbo
I4’s may be the best sounding... it’s so raw
does anybody know, who the driver of the BT52 was at this event in Goodwood? Thank you in advance for any appreciated reply.
Pierluigi Martini
@@ventisette. Thanks, it looks, as he enjoyed driving the BT52 ... 🙂🤘💪
Best f1 ever time
D'ora in poi solo latte Parmalat!!!
there's also a fantastic Lancia D50 in first scene
Yo soy de la idea que este auto incluso le puede ganar a un f1 actual aún y con toda la tecnología de los autos f1 de hoy en dia
To think this is a production engine.
Why wasn’t it on slicks ? I’m honestly not sure so can someone please tell me ?
Pierluigi Martini at the wheel.
we need this in GT7
It probably wouldn’t feel anywhere near as viscous as what the car would feel in any other simulation because gran turismo just feels like it’s toned down the hard handling like what we had in the earlier games
@@joshjackburns bruh
Imagine having 2 seconds of turbo lag
im thinking the bmw M13 is the engine that could produce 1400hp in qualifying trim!! out of a 1.5L engine!
Oscar Thorpe 1500 hp
Nope...this one was 850hp qualy and 640hp race trim...
The engine with 1500hp qualy trim was the famous MEGATRON :)
1000hp/l that is insane
I’m sure this four-pot is the most powerful f1 engine ever...
It can reach 1400 hrsprs! 🤯
Qualifying preparation made this engine reach between 1400 and 1500 hp
Not in this car from '83 yet. :)
My god, i always thought this car had a V8 engine
The BMW engine block they pissed on for good measure.....
Scary turbo lag!
Yeah, and you can hear when the turbo comes in -- all at once!
Racing these monsters in heavy rain must have been insane!
F1 should have gone with I4 engines for the turbo-hybrid era like originally planned. Maybe then we wouldn't have had vacuum cleaners on the track.

Wonder if they can engine swap it into a Miata
😂😂 It would tear it apart.
Piquet Senior and Brothers Fittipaldi. Is the best
1300hp! Imagine with today's technology of reducing turbo lag, how great would it perform. We need to get away from this stupid hybrid era, nor am I asking for a NA V12 . Atleast put in some overpowered turbo 4 bangers that incorporates the latest engine tech.
Yeah, I get your point. At the same time, try to imagine a V12 with all today's tech without limits, you should have a death wish to drive it
Ham footed even with the turbo lag.
...I've heard in "grenade mode" that little engine with the big turbo put out 1500 hp...BMW's dyno only went to 1280 hp...
How does it sound so loud?
Thats the Turbo boost!
Is it running on half boost only!?
Even less than that, around 1.5 bar. I know the driver, who owns a 1984 Ferrari and that’s the boost pressure he usually runs. Good for around 500BHP.
This BMW have the most powerfull motor in all the time in F1, 1400 hp ☠️☠️☠️
Til in the line this car wheels bad. Piquet got a hard work to drive it, in this way we know how he was a very good driver.
Sounds a bit like the S1000RR 😂
Might be because both got a inline 4 engine
sounds like sportbike 1000cc
sounds like todays rally cars
Anyone know what year these were raced?
1983/84
Yep, this BT52 was raced 1983 and upgraded to a B spec for 1984. Brabham used a BMW 4 pot until 1987, and the same engine was rebadged as a Megatron for use by Ligier and Arrows in 1987 and 1988.
Gordon Murray, Paul Rosche and toluene-based fuel from Winterschall. Blat!
