It's somehow very pleasing to see a driver like Ricardo as an old happy guy telling tales from his glory days. Too many F1 drivers didn't have that privilege.
actually later on engines had their throttle valve right in front of the turbo and not before the intake so there wasn't a lot turbo lag. the turbo was pretty much always pressured and even after you let off the gas you still had pressure in your aspiration part (turbo, intercooler and intake) which kept the turbo revs up and gave you nearly instant boost when you needed it out of the corner.
@@intheclarts This possibly stems from the start line crash of the 1978 Italian GP at Monza. Riccardo was wrongly blamed for initiating the crash which would ultimately cost Ronnie Peterson his life. Most of the blame came from James Hunt.

The turbo lag of the 4 cylinder (straight) BMW turbo was of around 2seconds. The V6 turbos (Renault, Ferrari) barely had turbo lags, because they were twin turbos. The V8 turbo of Alfa Romeo had almost zero lag (also a twin turbo), So Piquet and Patrese had to do a monstruous job of calculating when the power would come after pressing the throttle, DURING a corner! I mean, a slight mistake (like pressing too early or too late) could cost precious fractions of seconds and even a position during races.. Now think about that, corner after corner, during the whole racing, all year long???!?!?!
Worse still the throttle was like a light switch - all or nothing. The power came all at once. Imagine the effect of suddenly having 1200 horsepower early or mid corner - bye, bye race track, hello Armco.
I heard that Porsche suffered the same problems with their early 911 single turbos but fixed the turbo lag by adding twin turbo. Now, could modern day F1 use 1.5 liter inline 4 turbo engines with good results?

There were many "beautiful" F1 cars, but not many were race winners and championship winners. This car was designed on a piece of paper with a pen and a ruler, and the brain of a genius. The BT52, besides it's perfect lines and elegant livery (the blue nose version in my opinion is better...) had a beast of a motor that pumped nearly 1500 BHP, and a power to weight ratio close to 1-1. Also, it came after a horrible year, 1982, and marked the end of a not so great era of Venturi tunnel cars, that, besides being ugly (no front wing?) were dangerous and nasty to drive.
