    I’ve had a 340i m sport for 4 years now and I have had 0 problems. This might be because I replaced many of my parts with aftermarket parts, but no engine problems at all. I never understood why people say bmw are unrelible

      @@ryanb8736 I got it used with like 20k miles and the previous owner already installed a aftermarket charge pipe. In my years of owning it I installed an active autowerke hfcdp, a mst intake, and awe catback exhaust. I live in a place that rarely rains and has good weather so I never have to deal with rust on things so this could also contribute too.

    I kind of want this 2019 BMW 740i m sport I saw at a local dealership. But I am scared of the reliability of BMWs. I drive 24k miles a year half of it in the middle of nowhere freeway so breaking down would suck.
    But BMWs always peak my interest. My mom had an E28 bmw grey market car that she loved. She drove it since she graduated high school in 1994. I was driven home from the hospital after I was born in it. She daily drove it until I was 3. By then it was beginning to have issues and was rarely driven until she got rid of it years later.

      D - We love the B58 from a reliability standpoint. We've had 5+ BMWs and yes, they have there headaches, but if you maintain it properly it can last. Keep us updated.

    108000km on my M140i without any issues so far, just replaced the PCV diaphragm at 100000km because the rubber was close to rip.

    Just changed my original vanos actuators after 155,000km yesterday. You're definitely not waking away from this one without some skin missing on your knuckles and scratches on your forearms, but its nothing too crazy....just a little tedious. The vanos actuators are simply a wear item, like a PCV valve, or set of spark plugs. They WILL eventually have to be replaces, but its one of those fixes you can do it in your driveway.

    I am looking at getting an X5 F15 or the GO5 platform. On the B58 engine,have you heard of any problems with the oil filter housing breaking due to the plastic it’s made of also the heat management module cracking and pouring coolant on the ground? I have an 06 530i with the N52 and I think it’s a great engine. I am thinking about going with the 2018 X5 with the N55 engine. It’s just too much plastic in the B58.

      @@aarondostou3888 Ok, because I have been googling at lot of information on UA-cam and saw just now how some B58’s hear management t modules pouring out coolant and the oils cooler made of plastic when it use to be aluminum and they are starting to crack . They put them towards the back of the engine. When it was in the front. It would be nice if people would come out with their problems. I know not every engine is perfect. I just see that everything is made of plastic on the B58 and to me that’s not a good sign for the future. They may be good now since some are under warranty. I love my N52 and I feel the N55 would be the same as my N52.

      @@jackyl.pattersonjr.leading6944 i had both gen 1 and gen2 ( b58tu) . Yes some gen 1s have coolant issues ( retention tank cracking) gen 2 was flawless. The 2 most common issues are pcv failure ( easy fix ) and coolant tank cracks. Honestly this is one reliable engine

    I had my first VANOS solenoid failure (intake side) at 10K miles (2018 340i xDrive M Sport). The dealer replaced the solenoid. 16K miles later, I received a CEL which the OBD scan revealed as the intake VANOS not reaching position (or language to that effect, I forget). This CEL cleared itself the next day. It is interesting to me that this CEL appeared on the coldest day so far this winter. The car was garaged; however the garage is not heated so while it was warmer than the 8F outside temperature, it was still colder than usual. I am almost 100% convinced that misbehaving VANOS solenoids (or the VANOS system in general) is the cause of the surging I often experience under light engine load conditions. The surging is exacerbated by cold weather.

      Hi Hank, sorry to hear about the VANOS issues on your B58. Sounds like you could certainly have issues with the solenoid again, but the problem might be starting slowly if you've only seen the code once so far.

      They didn't reset adaptation. The dme doesn't know its a different part and is using learned knowledge to keep it running.

      @8020 Media b58 is much easier and cheaper to make power than the s55, also more reliable than the s55 too.

      @@the_batmobile0.4 how is b58 cheaper? same prices for turbo kits,b58 oiling system is crap compared with s55,b58 crap manifold and cost 5k to upgrade alone,besides crank hub how exacly is the b58 superior?

    What about oil consumption issues some A90 Supra are having?

      Ricardo - Sorry for the late response here, but oil consumption is a common occurrence on most turbocharged BMW engines, including the B58TU found in the A90 Supra. While it certainly seems that the A90 Supra has been found to burn more oil than some B58-equipped BMWs, oil consumption has been a noted issue on the B58 and many other modern turbocharged BMW engines since the N54. Quite a bit of the online discussion comes from new A90 owners coming from non-BMW vehicles who aren’t aware that oil consumption is often a normal (albeit annoying) part of owning a high-performance turbocharged engine.
      Generally speaking, most of the oil consumption complaints come from A90 owners who are driving their vehicles hard. That increases oil consumption due to higher engine and intake air temperatures. In addition to driving habits, climate also plays a role, as cars in warmer tend to burn more oil than those in cooler climates. BMW has stated that their warranty claim threshold is 750ml of oil in 1,000 miles, so anything below that is generally considered acceptable.

    2016 340i is toast, needs new engine. Fuel injectors failed, leaked fuel into cylinders, piston scored em due to lack of oil. I'm screwed. must feel it as is ;(((

      @@8020Media Love the Car like a brother, debating on just keeping it long term till I have the 25k to fix it. I feel it'd be best to let the dealership handle the repairs for warranty, accountability purposes. Doesn't seem right to sell it for a few grand. It has MSport up grades, sickass msport exhaust ect.

      We've seen a few conversations and reports of injector failure on B48/B58 engines but mostly on earlier 2017 models. There was a revised design and new part number for injectors in August 2017. It also appears a lot of the cases are on modded B58s, especially those running ethanol blends. It's certainly a potential problem to keep an eye on as the B48 and B58 engines continue to age. However, it's still a far cry from the injector issues that plagued the N54 back in the day and those were $300-500+ (for just 1) piezoelectric injectors. Fortunately, an entire set of OEM B58 injectors is less than $500.
