We played it in high school in NYC. It's like soccer and basketball, and was developed in Europe to keep soccer players in shape during the off season.
just to explain the situation... this game was semifinal at asian game, and S.Korea was 5th time defending champion straight and was going for 6th. winner of this match was going to face Kuwait in final. guess who the refs were from.. kuwait.
Each team has a goalie, who is the only person allowed inside the semi-circle around the net. There are six defenders who line up around the outside of the semi-circle and block the shooters. When the ball is in their possession, the team tries to throw the ball into the goal. You can dribble but it's a passing game, three steps for each dribble, and you can only stop for 3 seconds. So it's a fast game. and there's a lot of room for facing tricks. The dribbling is different from bball though.
Playing handball myself: Just.. WTF!!? The opponents should at least trow the ball back after such a big mistake! -.-" Worst sportsmanship i've ever seen...
Finally the best part is sort of jumping through the defenders at the goalie. It's the only time you're allowed inside the semi-circle. You can jump and fly into it to score but you have to run back out immediately.
Almost the same happened in hockey in 1988 between Sweden and Canada. The bulgarian ref was clearly bought or in another way influenced by the canadians. Luckily, the match ended 3-3 thus stopping the canadians from winning any medals.
@DanLFC8 The only way to be injured in soccer is accidents and when you break the rules. In handball you can easily get injured without the one who did it get any punishment. In soccer you can only tackle but in handball you are supposed to fight. I don't know how many hits I have gotten in my head. And it's much more straining to fight and run in 60 minutes than it is to jog in 90 minutes.
1st play: was 'no good' although he didn't even step on the line 2nd play: was an 'offensive foul' when the player barely touched the defense 3rd play: an 'overstep' as he was dribbling the ball + when he thought it was ridiculous and smiled, he gets a 2-minute suspension when it comes to defense, korean defenders easily get 2-minute suspensions although there was minimum contact :'3
you're totally off. with the soccer players thing. "Team handball has origins reaching as far as antiquity: urania in ancient Greece, harpaston in ancient Rome, fangballspiel in medieval Germany as examples. There are also records of handball-like games in medieval France, and among the Inuit in Greenland, in the Middle Ages, and in Ancient Africa, primarily Egypt."
Judges were paid to judge unfair. Steps, which werent steps were unished, fouls which werent fouls too. Stuff like that and in this video you can really see that all those desicions were wrong and the judgments must have been paid.
The coach of Kuwait is Lars Friis from Denmark, and I remember he happily reported back to Danish newssites about his team´s big accomplishments beating Southkorea and qualifying for the Olympics. Later the news about the corruption came too, but Lars Friis can just go to hell! How he can call himself a serious coach yet what´s this scandal take place without doing nothing - I don´t care if it is his own team or not.. I hate injustice..!
@kcnB Thats true. I understand a lot of things over here. I understand why the ref did that. I understand that he got paid, and i understand why.. but the only thing i dont understand is the wining team celebrating at the end !!
I´m from Denmark which is a great handball nations, and all I can say is that the fact IHF does absolutely nothing about this scandal just proves how corrupt they themselves are.. Hassan Mustafa should be ashamed of himself!
As a neutral person I have to say, that the judgement didn´t made everthing wrong. I don´t speak corean, but I know what the people mean. I explain it to you what had been wrong. 0:49 you see that the ball is over his hand. that´s like he tiped the ball two times. 1:30 the defence stands there and doesn´t move. 1:45 it´s a foul. 2min would be the right decission. 2:11 yes, he doesn´t stand in the "circle" but when he throws the ball he does.
this isnt asian championship, it was asian game semi final. 2 refs were from kuwait and winner of this match would face kuwait in final. about jordan refs, they were actually banned by IHF, but AHF brought them in to fix match in asian championship.
refs were kuwaitis and winner of this match face kuwait next match, which is final of asian game. fix was made by federation level, cuz kuwait prince has been president of AHF for like 25years.
It's true. Qatar needed to win the match with a certain number of goals to get to a certain Championship, so they bribed the ref. The ref's got suspended from handball for ever. :) Don't quite remember what happend to the Qatar team tho.. :(
@delfigo1 how can you compare what happened in 2002 with this incredible video ... And we did know how it feels in 2006 against Switzerland and two days ago against Japan. Do not believe we are cheaters.
Respect to Korea! they didnt give up even thought the refree did what he did

damn that was so irritating..
But i admire the calm players of Korea.. I would've flipped out...

@Jagexfan its called hanball. you dont use youre feat and you can hold and bounce the ball for limited time. hope i helped!
Catastrophic calls alright... have to admire the korean players for keeping their cool.
Haha, that's a really great judge :P
Someone, please give those judges some glasses.
and this is where the 2018 worldcup is going to be held .... wow
I can hardly believe that something like this could happen:D:D
"Money Money Money !
Must be funny
In the rich man's world"
;) this is a short resum of this match !
Playing handball myself:
Just.. WTF!!?

These refeeres are not welcome in my secret bat-cave. That´s for sure!
I would have snapped if they were my refs...
Hopefully, they will never eeeeever judge a match!!!
Referees of 2002 FIFA World Cup accepted brides from Korea so she could go to the semifinal. So this handball match was so fair.

wow, that really was robbing.
Greetings from Croatia :)

congratulations@ bahrain!
how much oil you have promised the referee.
or was it to fill up the car again? such a stupid game ...
matchfixing big time!
because it wasnt first time it happened. it was 3rd straight game like that in that tournament (asian game) and s.korea was 5th time defending champ.
Used to play this in High School Gym class. Very fun to play
The north korea threatened the judges with nuclear bombs, just might.
damn qatari. wat a completely unglorious victory!
@DonKanallie90
The Handball federation suspended both the judges, and there was a rematch. South Korea won with 15 goals i think...
@thwkiel1000 nein das waren komplett unberechtigte pfiffe.

you've got to be kidding me. would a prince go that low?
that lady could have been cussin me out and i didnt understand her

Is this refree still alive and well?
1st play: was 'no good' although he didn't even step on the line

3rd play: an 'overstep' as he was dribbling the ball + when he thought it was ridiculous and smiled, he gets a 2-minute suspension

do you smell that?...corrupt refferees
@prateek523
yes they do, but it is really hard to save a ball in this sport.
this is why the scores are always this high.
you're totally off. with the soccer players thing.
"Team handball has origins reaching as far as antiquity: urania in ancient Greece, harpaston in ancient Rome, fangballspiel in medieval Germany as examples. They've sold a lot of oil, then they bought the referee
if that isn't a pair of bought referees, i will eat my handball
If there was a law against robbery in handball, this would be for a death penalty...
wtf?! this is really the most unfair jugdement in HB ive ever seen
yeah, no one should be proud after a victory like this.
What will happen at the World Championship 2015?
How can you be happy over your vicotry when you know the referies did a piss poor job?!!
running around a small pitch throwing a ball not even as tiring as 5 a side football
I agree with you,and i have to say that every referee is ashamed by seeing this referees...it's unbelievable....
Judges were paid to judge unfair. Steps, which werent steps were unished, fouls which werent fouls too. Stuff like that and in this video you can really see that all those desicions were wrong and the judgments must have been paid.
Enough oil to sell for a family package of AK47.

I hate injustice..!
The refs were not from Kuwait, but from Jordan. Orginally they were supposed to be from Germany, but somehow they were replaced.
i can't belive my eyes seeing the persians being happy after the game.. celebrating a victory with cheat..
If this was happening in a Balkan country - the refs would have been dead after the match.
they put this but not all the scandals they did in the FIFA World Cup 2002
were that at any contest?
im going to u.s. as an exchange student n i wanna know if there like highschool teams of this sport?
We played it in my high school too, until i met a Danish friend, i never knew it was an actual world sport O.O
It is actually the second most popular sport in the world...
Only question...
How much did they get?
Omg lol. they look like children on the field!
thsy just said that they want a rematch...in fact they knew that is almost impossible
@kcnB

Why didn't they aim for the ref when they're almost 20 goals down and has to score 10 times to get 1... Then they might have had to replace him.
@TheDan2205 Actually, it's the Koreans that dance in circles :P
@DonKanallie90 i think the decision at 1:40min, is a little bit to hard if he dit nothing before
@cafcluke Please, handball is one of the tougher sports out there.
is this south korea against bahrain?
because later the referee wasn´t fair at the game south korea against kuwait...
i know its hard being a judge im one too but how much is the bribe to those judges
wonder if that ref is still breathing

Its moments like this when you just want to beat the ref isn`t?
As a neutral person I have to say, that the judgement didn´t made everthing wrong. I don´t speak corean, but I know what the people mean.

2:11 yes, he doesn´t stand in the "circle" but when he throws the ball he does.
may i say somthing theres a video press where it is he say he throw away the game he was paid to get the match stopped
ref was probably bribed or had a cousin on that team
this isnt asian championship, it was asian game semi final. 2 refs were from kuwait and winner of this match would face kuwait in final.

Crazy judge,he prolly got paid in dirty oil money
I train handball too and - believe me - i've seen worst!!
i smell money here!!!!! :D
like 5 seconds later *blow from umpire whistle. Blowing Ref
i almost lost my mind watchin this
oh no..i thought it was football..now, i have to klik go back to see football "-_-
@HollStar159
YEP, you're right but some people provoke me by thier strange comments, so sometimes I have to reply and thank you pop ^_^
It's true. Qatar needed to win the match with a certain number of goals to get to a certain Championship, so they bribed the ref. The ref's got suspended from handball for ever. :) Don't quite remember what happend to the Qatar team tho.. :(
@dragonball0000 Ok XD This sport from the movie is Handball. What i mean with soccer is this watch?v=kvLaQw2nFj4&feature=related
That was the worst bought referees ever. They weren't even trying to hide it!
r u serious? where were they from? and what was the result of the second game?
@rockingrugger i think its Bahrain not Qatar
@JohnnyNumber11 it is vs qater but i think the referies from bahrain
@delfigo1
how can you compare what happened in 2002 with this incredible video ...
And we did know how it feels in 2006 against Switzerland and two days ago against Japan. Do not believe we are cheaters.
i think the referee was payed for this
Most sports? What other sports?
do unfair judgement in handball : Croatia vs. Serbia
i don't understand a word, but these pictures say everything. It's such a shame and sooooo obvious that something wasn't right....
binge chilling
1:42 is a definate red card. When it comes to the offensive fouls, that is ridiculous umpiring.
OMFG thats there the VM in 2015 is going to be...
