  • HERE'S THE REASON WHY HE DOESN'T TAP IT IN:
    J.O. Waldner and J. Persson play one of the best points ever.
    In several Million views, the most frequently asked question has been: "Why doesn't he just tap it in?".
    Well, of course that can be done. It's extremely difficult to do it right, because of the massive spin, and on a high bounce the opponent can run in a kill it, or, if you're the "Mozart of Table Tennis", this is how you deal with it: Look at "Table Tennis Spectacular - Part 2"
    .
    For the "experts" that belittle this as "exhibition": If you can only appreciate table tennis skills that are aimed at hard core competition, you are missing so much of what makes this sport fun. Lighten up and take yourself less seriously. The best in the world can, why not you?

    This point is really something different because at 1:43, like the commentator says: "Looks like someone threw it in from the other side" it is true in deed. But not only that. The ball also CHANGES DIRECTION AS IT LANDS. How is that even possible??
    When someone manages to hit the ball around the net instead of above it, it's usually considered something spectacular in table tennis. But what Waldner does here is that he spins the ball around the net from the OTHER SIDE! And not only once but TWICE! In the same frikkin point!! Also in a televised match! Has this ever happened before? I doubt it.

    It's hard to just 'lightly' hit the ball due to the amazing spinning force put on the ball. They don't just lob the ball, they put a large spin on it, and hitting the ball can literally send the ball off in a random direction. You can see the spinning force clearly from how the highest lob soars down from the opposite direction back onto the table.

      @SirSelfunk 9 років тому +16

      Josh Penbar if he did, most likely it would be against him since the ball will always end up high enough giving time to the opponent to run and smash it. So it creates an advantage for the opponent..

    • @TheRafaelBond
      @TheRafaelBond 9 років тому +5

      Josh Penbar have you played it? the spin makes it hard to control, could go wrong and the other comes in to smash.

    • @goodoldtom
      @goodoldtom 9 років тому +16

      ***** Before you call it dumb and pointless, do some research.
      There was massive spin on the ball, and if he attempted to do a short shot, the short shot would be a high bounce, so Waldner would sprint in and smash the ball in Persson's face.

    • @hasantariq2286
      @hasantariq2286 9 років тому +2

      +firendable Yea, but you have to take in account of the spin, usually pros spin it in a way where if the opponent tries to smash anywhere else, the ball would go out flying without hitting the table. Also, your reaction cant always be perfect, they hit it so fast, that you dont have time to think exactly where you want the ball to go, so hitting towards the opponent might be their only option. Heck, sometimes its so fast that just hitting the ball and hoping it lands correctly might be your only option. If hitting away from the opponent always works for you, then i would guess that your opponents cant do a good enough spin, or are too close to be able to get it.

    • @hasantariq2286
      @hasantariq2286 9 років тому

      firendable you're saying that like its so simple and easy... Also you cant always tell what spin they have on the ball to able to counter spin it, since they always switch it up, well sorta. btw, that's just one thing, what about all the other common circumstances that i listed?

      You don’t know table tennis: Waldner (yellow) in the defense spins highly the balls with top spins and sends them in an high trajectory. With this 2 features the impact on the table will be too strong and will be impossible to responde with that kind of shot

  • @d1st0rt3dsan1ty
    @d1st0rt3dsan1ty 10 років тому

    Everyone saying "hurr durr just tap it in" needs to read the description, because it's very accurate.
    It's nearly impossible to effectively "tap it in" when the balls is coming off of a lob with that much topspin. Your opponent would easily be able to read your body language when you didn't "wind up" for another smash, so a drop shot would be super obvious.
    You would attempt to drop shot, and the height of the bounce combined with the massive topspin would make the ball pop up; an easy opening

    @infiniteDefinitives Have you ever played table tennis? There is so much spin on the returned ball that he needs to hit it hard and just go for the middle of the table. If you hit it loose, the spin gets grip on the racket and the very lightweight ball spins off in an almost uncontrollable direction (i.e. probably misses the table). But this also means that the ball will be returned more or less directly to the opponent. Also the defender usually misses sooner or later.

The guy in blue (Jörgen Persson) has placed fourth in the Olympics twice and has won the world championships once and placed second once, both games against the guy in orange. In 97 they placed second together in the team's world championship, the same year Waldner went on to take the singles gold with 21-0 in sets. These guys are definitely not bad players.
