Excellent video. I am uncomfortable wearing a necktie and doing a little research on the opinions and history of them. You have produced an excellent video. Well done. My employer does not wear a jacket, possibly because we are in Australia and most of the time it is too hot however executives wear ties and I am aspiring to enter those ranks. It is difficult to come to grips with having to wear a tie each day.
Thank you for taking the time to share your wisdom.

@TheChad2108 We get a lot of "can I out-dress my boss" e-mails. And in general the rule is yes, to a point - you can be dressy but not flashy. You don't want to look like you're putting on airs, so keep it conservative and classic. A prison may also have specific rules of its own, for example I know some would prohibit neckties or require clip-ons only for safety reasons.

For be the question is, to be or not to be? To be seen and to be spoken to by strangers, then I dress as formal as I can up to and excluding white tie. I hate white tie, it's not me. I always get to speak to very interesting people. Not to be seen, to fly under radar, I dress down. On one occasion I went to theater wearing a hoodie, only cause I didn't have time to get formal. I was still noticed but no one spoke. Lesson, be different and you either stand out or get killed.

I do this all the time. Jeans, rolled up sleeves, and preloosened tie. In my head, it strikes a balance between casual and professional (at least, by modern standards of “professional”). I’ve always had an affinity for the attire near the end of a wedding reception - jackets off, sleeves rolled up, ties loosened. Formal clothing but worn informally.

@Punisherfan123 Sounds like you're talking about an ascot. They were one of the predecessors to the modern necktie. They're more costume pieces than fashion wear these days, but there should be some people making them that you can find online. Once in a while you'll see them at formal events where someone wants to be deliberately archaic.

It leads the eyes of the observer up to your face, as all these triangles around the suit's chest and shoulder area do. Plus, you can color code the message you wanna send. But mainly, it's about those triangles, with the tie almost serving as an arrow showing up.

@SirBlade666 This goes with a grain of salt. At my workplace (IT dept), baggy khakis and polo shirts are "acceptable" (and what my boss wears, and his boss as well), although technically not up to dress code. I wear slacks and dress shirts. I agree that you shouldn't outdress him too much (I don't wear ties, sportscoats, or suits), but a small degree of outdressing is acceptable. No need to look sloppy just because your boss does =P

@AnomalyTea I think you're safe. "Outdressing" in the sense of going a level of formality higher -- neckties where your boss doesn't wear one, sports jackets in your case, etc. -- might be pushing it. But just doing the same basic level of formality (polos or dress shirts without neckties) is fine even if you're doing it BETTER than he is :D

This one is particularly tricky for me when it comes to work.
I am an assistant professor in his late 20s. My work environment shifts from campus to high schools in the daily basis. On top of that there are very few men in my age range working in academia and I seldom see them. To complicate things further, I have a baby face, so I generally look about 21-24 (aka student range).
Typically I go to work in a tie (along with a wrist watch), only ditching it when I wear a sport jacket.
While I understand that we profs have a reputation for being horribly dressed, I want to look like the kind of guy you send to represent the school. The guy that sticks in the heads of my predominately female co-workers, and most importantly, they guy you give tenure.
What do you think, tie or no tie?

I honestly think it's personal preference whether a man wants to wear a necktie or not. I personally do and I'm in my late 20s but that's partially because I like the way it looks and it gives my outfit some colour and design. I am aware several people my age don't but that's them and I'm me. In other words, I think you should definitely do what feels comfortable for you and not let anyone judge you for it :)

Disregard the other guy. Dress how you want, be who you want to be.
If you're still into it or haven't figured it out yet, here's some tips.
      1- leave your shirt untucked
2- AT LEAST leave your top button undone, and have your tie tie loosely down, till it meets your highest button.
3- this one depends on the weather, your mood, but I would typically suggest wearing a long sleeve button down, and roll your sleeves, but hey, if you want to leave then down, or even use a short sleeve shirt, go for it
4- try to go for solid colors. stay away from anything to busy. I like black and gray, but you can whatever, as long as it matches your outfit.
5- generally, stay away from silk material ties, and go for a more casual material, such as Cotton, wool, or KNIT ties.
One thing I do, is I actually take light weight scarves, and tie them as ties. It gives off a really dishevelled, uneven vibe that I think is really cool, although I don't know that that is what you would want to do.
-another thing I dig, is wearing a waistocat (a vest) unbuttoned, or buttoned, with or without your tie. Just something to add a little spice.
6- wear casual pants. Casual black pants, jeans even. I would advice not wearing shorts, unless you're wearing a short sleeve.
I'm not sure if this is relevant to you by this point, but in the case that it is, I hope it helped :). These are not rules, but rather guidelines for you to lean on.

I did at mine but it was part of the dress code. Look to your piers. If they don't, then you shouldn't either.Wear what they wear but wear it better. e.g. clean new looking sneakers, polo or tee shirts without huge logos or sayings on them. Replace clothing that is faded or showing signs of becoming tattered. It will be hard for them to shun you for out doing them in the neatness department. But wearing a tie will alienate you from them if they aren't wearing them. Being neat will still get you noticed by the people who will offer you internships or write letters of recommendation. I'm sure that you have figured this out already six months down the line but hearing from another source might keep you confident in whatever decision you made.Good luck. My freshman year was quite scary but I lived. ;-)

No. Too formal, unless you have to. Doesn’t matter so much in the real world, but wearing ties will make you look like a “dork”, unless you really pull off that look. Don’t use it as an excuse to look sloppy. Maybe wear a pair of jeans, a polo shirt, and a tailored sport coat.
