Thanks for the comparison; with Valeria on Kickstarter right now, and Spacebase on my shelf of opportunity, I was really debating if I need both. I might still back a core copy, but at least you quenched a bit of my "all in" madness.

I almost didn't watch this due to the Machi Koro mention. Glad I did.

Good point. Maybe I should change it. Thanks for the kind words, Wade!

Well done! We really need more direct comparison reviews out there.
I'm not sure why so many reviewers seem to shy away from comparing games. They usually review games in isolation which is not near as helpful.
The So Very Wrong About Games podcast also does great comparison reviews.

Very good video! I happen to be searching what to game to get and I already played Valeria once and I was mesmerized to it. Availability-wise though, it isn't available here so my friend recommended that I should get Space Base instead. Since you mentioned that both games are very similar, I've decided to wait out or at least search for used copies of Valeria instead of compromising on buying Space Base instead. Thanks so much! Subscribed to your channel and I hope to see more comparison videos from you (like every other people are saying so)!

Lol I came in to this knowing about Machi Koro and Space Base, now I've got a new game to consider :P Seems like Valeria might be the most up my alley tho

Oh and let me tell you, Valeria was won me over big time! They have a Darksworn expansion that brings it to a whole new level!

I think the gameplay in Space Base looks interesting; however, I just can't get past the artwork. Even if I could get past the artwork, there are those crazy sized cards that I can't sleeve. I'll stick with Valeria Card kingdoms.
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

The command station expansion for space base comes with sleeves for the cards, which leads me to believe that you can purchase them somewhere

Appreciate the comparison, however the comment on MK is misguided. Some (not all ofc) of us start of with (a love for) Machi Koro and explore the net for 'upgrades' of the mechanics.
I have had sessions of incredible laughter and wonder from the unpredictability and the improbability of consequent dice rolls and loved MK for them. Sure, beyond that there is little game there but therefore I consider it a great stepping stone, a harmless timekiller.
Since I've gotten space base, I've moved on ofc.

Great comparison of these. I just ordered Space Base and I think I will like it but I am quite interested in Valeria also. It is more expensive but the art looks great.
I would have liked to see a little more comparison about Machi Koro and why it fails whereas the other two seem to succeed.

Thanks for the kind words. Machi Koro falls short because it 80% luck of the dice roll. People can have hot or cold rolls combined with cards that can leave people without turns. Another issue is that your success is exponential, so if you get ahead early then its increasingly difficult for others to catch up. Lastly, I was hoping the expansions would fix the game...nope. Made it worse. Now the game takes way too long on top of all the other issues. Hope that additional info helps. Have a great day!

Great summary. I don't see those issues as much of an issue in the playthroughs of Space Base. Looking forward to playing it.

I didn't care for Space Base at all, same feel as Machi Koro for me. I enjoyed Valeria a lot more than MK & SB.

Yes!!!!!! Machi Koro sucks and I appreciate you saying that to fix it is to ignore it! Good comparison my friend!

Boardgames Bourbon don't worry, I hate it too now and I gave it a negative review a while back. I didn't fully hate it then, but the hate has been swelling in me for it for some time now....

Not sure I agree with the idea that the best way to fix MK is to not play it. When I first heard of MK I was excited about the mechanics, and so keen to play it. I played it a couple of times and found it terrible. It took a few years until I discovered SB, and this scratched the itch I'd had since first hearing about MK.
