Eminem wrote this song after one of the members (Bugz) from his group D12 was killed. The CRAAAQZY part about this is that Em's best friend since forever, Proof, who played "Bugz" in this video actually ended up shot to death too, about 2 yrs after this song was released. RIP Big Proof!!! He was the one who helped Eminem to get on stage in the rap-battles in Detroit and stuff. Without Proof I seriously doubt Eminem would have become who he is today. For real. His death devestated Em, leading to him overdosing and all sorts of crazy shit...... This video is rough to watch actually, song is dope af tho
And in his book, Em wrote about how for so long after Proof died he kept thinking back to this video and thinking "did I cause it somehow by putting that out into the universe?" So sad.
Good explanation, pretty much the jist of it. The creepy part is how proof played his homie who got shot and killed and that ended up really being his fate in the end. R.I.P Proof

The moral of the story: although he runs with soldiers, he didn’t want to see any blood shed. Too many hip hop artist died because of the beef. Do some research guys, you’ll find his beefs and stories behind it interesting. The guy on the operating table was a his best friend Proof who was actually killed not too long after this song came out.
Being young when this came out, I didn't pay attention to the lyrics. But now, I get it. I remember hearing about the drama between the rappers. Now this song brings me to tears... 😥
I was on like third or maybe fourth grade and bought it into school since we had this everyone bring a song and everyone rates everyones picking contest. I got the lowest score eeasily of us all and suddenly when my classmates started to see the music video of this song from old mtv kinda channel that showed just music videos, then suddenly I heard everyone saying how they love the song 😂 Other thing was funny when the teacher was reading the whole time the little booklet with cd where was lyrics and was looking a bit angry but let the song play out in the end and just said it wasn't completely on the rules but ok. Because there wasn't supposed to be any cursing, it's still weard for me how listening to Em was (I guess is) controversial for well kids but Britney and her music videos just a ok for most parents back then (I don't really see the difference with this video and Britney dancing on schoolgirl outfit, licking lollipop or whatever if people are guarding what their kids listen to)(my parents saw music just as music tho, there wasn't any boundaries). I was sure the teacher was going to stop the song at any minute even tho I chose the song that had the least cursewords and the more artistic mood so she could maybe let it pass. I'm finnish and was a kid so I got the concept but didn't know about the specifics and now know really about every altercation and references... and just every english words simply 😂 Just noticing the mood, certain words and knowing about such thing as 50 getting shot 9 times etc atleast it's quite clear cut overrall what he was talking about even as a kid
Lol its Martika. No offense. But I wore my parents cassette tape out jammin this and most of the 70s and 80s and older. But yeah she did a great job on that song. 😊
Snoop said it best when he said "Don't get it fucked up, right now Marshall is dormant but if ya'll push the wrong buttons the beast Slim Shady will appear out of nowhere".
Actually Em didn't discover 50....50 had already put put music in NYC that was fire 🔥 but after getting shot his sound changed...and record executives weren't messing with 50..but Em heard his music and put him on....creating that G-UNIT Era that smashed the Industry Tony Yayo, Young Buc, Lloyd Banks, and 50 noone could touch them.....there's only a few rap legends who've come on to the scene like Em was one..Jay Z...Cash Money...Outkast
The beef he's talking about in this was with Ray Benzino about 15 years ago. Benzino owned The Source magazine (the magazine Biggie was talking about in Juicy when he said "now my face is all up in The Source"), 1 of the only 2 hip hop magazines out there back then. Benzino disrespected Eminem because he was a whiteboy, only gave his album like 1 out of 5 mic's.. and the beef started. The other beef he's talking about is between 50 and Ja Rule about 20 years ago.
the whole eminem and benzino thing was 20 years ago in 2002 and ja rule and 50 was around 23 years ago in 1999 if I'm not mistaken it was over a number of different issues. ja rule getting robbed and he apparently saw 50 cent a few weeks later with the dude that robbed him but 50 claims it went back even further than that over ja rule not showing him love when he turned up to ja rules video shoot when ja rule was just blowing up and 50 wasn't even signed at the time 50 was just an up and coming underground rapper at the time and he turned up at ja's video shoot and he felt ja didn't acknowledge him or something of that nature so it was just a bitter back and forward from around that time.
Man y'all make me feel old ASF and I'm only 33 😂. I remember every single bit of this beginning with Em's first LP! Edit: thanks for all the likes and comments 😀😊😊💯
glad i paused at the beginning. cuz i felt that would be the case,. these guys dont put in the work to understand old hiphop. the channel is fading on me fast
I thought it was either censoring “without ever mentioning shit” or “just without ever mentioning…” and letting the beat take over which always sounded strange but I guess that’s why lol
I remember this being on MTv everyday. Ja Rule mentioned Hailey in a song and Em lost it and he helped bury Ja and Murder Inc. with 50 Cent who already was gunning for them. Hailey was really young at this time, not even a teenager I believe. The sad thing is, the video shows his best friend Proof being shot and killed and a cpl yrs later Proof was shot and killed in real life! The song is not only about beef with Murder Inc., but how the record companies make money off of beef and and don't care if their artists die as they will make even more money. He says they are like toy soldiers.
This video haunts Eminem...he feels it created a negative energy that helped cost Proof( the bf dying) his life for real. Sweet sweet Proof. I cried a lot when he died
Broke my heart to see this video after Proof got murdered. So glad i got to see Eminem live with Proof next to him on stage. Their chemistry was amazing
Damn watching y'all react to the song makes me feel so damn old because I was in my early teens when the original Ja Rule and 50 Cent beef happened and then the Benzino and Eminem shit was going on that's pretty much what he's talkin about .
Dude over here talking about “big ass pants” while wearing a whole ass ski mask indoors with a wife beater and 2 others are wearing sunglasses inside 😂🧐
Marching drumline thru the whole song , haunting. The meaning of the song title, quote by Em in 04, "The battles they wage are so meaningless that they might as well be fought for toys."
The rap wars were extremely bloody in the 90's. Everyone in the pictures disappeared in the end because they were all casualties of gun violence. And sadly, as Eminem wrote in the beginning, all of this shit could have been solved on the phone through reason and words, but instead they are filling in graves.
That was a premonition. In the video, Em's childhood friend Proof is fatally shot in front of a nightclub in Detroit. And a year later, Proof is actually shot dead in exactly the same club where the video was filmed a year ago!
Love you guys much love from the u.k havent heard this song and also cleaning out my closet my friend was murdered so wanted to react to you guys first kinda worried but all of you are amazing so wanted to brave it out em is the goat 100% never will be another not in my eyes meanings have so much when it comes to this man best wishes all have a wonderful new year 2022 is almost over and 2023 is nealry here hope all your wishes come true in 2023 xxxxx

the lyrics that they wrote back then grew with me , to this day his words and many other artist at this time still reseanant with me people hear the swearing the negitive words but had need to sat back and listen to the story. 100 % shady fan to this day white boy that made it though the barriers and got respect purely on his talent . 100% living legend this is just opinion im sorry if it affends anyone xx
After what went down w/ Proof, this video just makes me depressed AF. It's crazy to see his old music being revisited by a younger generation and them not knowing the whole back story behind the beef.
I'm very happy with all reactions.. I became one of your subsciber.. Trust me slowly but surely your youtube will be big.. Keep reacting to old school hip hop like this.. Greetings from me, from Indonesia.. Marhsall Mathers: Makes you cry Sometimes his dark life story is very much related to us in the real life (about love, family, children, about the cruelty of the world, or about whatever it is) Like the songs Mockingbird, When I'm Gone, Your Never Over, Going Through Changes, Sing For The Moment, Like Toys Soldiers, Rock Bottom, and many more.. FYI: That the Rock Bottom song was made when he had not met Dr. Dre & was not well known, it was said that when he made the song Em had thought about suicide but Em did not give up and Rap saved him so he can become what he is now Slim Shady: Makes you laugh Slim Shady is cast with a blonde man who is grumpy & sometimes makes us laugh but a little crazy, controversial words and the diss song is very cruel Like the songs Nail In The Coffin & Bully (Diss Benzino & Ja Rule), Superman & The Warning (Diss Mariah Carey & Nick), The Real Slim Shady & Without Me (Diss Christina Aguilera, Limp Bizkit, & Moby), Cleanin Out My Closet (Diss his Mother), Leaving Heaven (Diss his Father) FYI: The song Leaving Heaven was made by Em because he was very disappointed and hated his father because until his father died he did not give a good impression since Em was a child and Em also said he was too fucking coward to never see his grankids, Hailie and the other kids Eminem: Make you Think Eminem often makes songs to motivate many people or people who have felt like the life that Em lived Like the song Lose Yourself, Not Afraid, Guts Over Fear, Beautiful, Beautiful Pain, Till I Collapse And More FYI: Many people feel helped or excited after hearing the songs Ohyaaa.. And one more thing, Marshall Mathers, Slim Shady, and Eminem It lives in the same body
Such a memorable time in music love this song the message the power the video. I don't need to say much else the comments say it all lol I'm totally late 😃 great comments great reaction Happy Thanksgiving guys to
This is in my top 3 favorite songs of Eminem. I used to listen to this everyday when I was 7 playing cod zombies. Something about this song hits different. Now that I’m older I realize the true meaning
First love your channel you guys crack me up. Second em has been in the rap game over 20 years there's a lot of history. That's a deep rabbit hole I look forward to seeing you explore it. So much great music.
Great song by Eminem most these rappers all sample music from the times I grew up in late 70s 80s and 90s this song was sample by good song from 1989 "Toy Soldiers" by Martika 80s and 90s best times for all kinds music.eminem lyrics are crazy good song sampled from maybe you guys should listen to
True but in this case it was bugz, proof played his part as an actor in the video but little did they know, proof died the same way bugz did about a year or 2 after this video was released. Eminem can't watch this ever because of how much of a coincidence it is. It's like em was portraying the future
This is such an eerie song with that knowledge that Proof went through this almost the exact same way. Except it was a parking lot when his own cousin shot him in the back twice and once in the head. All over a game of pool. This gets me so emotional every time I hear it. Powerful song!!! R.I.P. - BUGZ, Big Proof, Freaky Ta, Big L, Jam Master Jay, Pac, Biggie and all of the others we lost to gun violence!! Too many to count! This violence needs to stop!!! You don't need to kill anyone over petty shit. Embrace your fellow rappers. Share a kind word for a complete stranger today and if they thank you, tell them it's their turn to do the same for another complete stranger. This will create a tidal wave of LOVE for all involved. Spreading all around the world! Have a great day to those who read to the end of my comment!!! ❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍💓
i feel like you guys need me in a call there so i can give you guys backstory to every bar you dont get lol. one reason i love old Em is because it all had substance. it all meant something. Now he raps to rap and that's cool, he's earned it to showcase his skill, but old Em literally kept me from being my father.
My cousin Lee who was severely disabled went a D12 concert and met Eminem and everyone in the bar of the hotel, he got their autographs tattood on his arm! My cousins passed away and d12 even wrote to us. Then just after that, this happened to proof 💔
Young cats dont know but Eminem never rapped fast in his prime on any of his first 5 albums, it wasn't until his feature on Drake's debut track "Forever" in like 08' (like 10 years into his career) that he went semi-fast and still didnt use the fast style until only like 7 years ago. Eminems prime is a polar opposite sound than "New Eminem".... He reinvented himself to flex more, which worked.
Eminem wrote this song after one of the members (Bugz) from his group D12 was killed. The CRAAAQZY part about this is that Em's best friend since forever, Proof, who played "Bugz" in this video actually ended up shot to death too, about 2 yrs after this song was released. I'm sayin.. I hadn't seen this in a long time and it gave me chills.

Martika 'Toy Soldiers' ❤
coming from late 80's
For me this is the best song Eminem ever did. Utter perfection. 🔥🔥
This song was tm these song back in the Day. It hits hard
This song & video always gets me emotional just being alive & following the story as it was happening and the proof dying as well. Sad times
this is Andre, living in Montreal ,..i just came across your vids and cant get enough ,..im 62 ,..nevertheless i envy your being together to chill in vids ,...peace to you all ,..take care..
Now you've really need to go and do mockingbird or cleaning out my closet cuz this song is called toy soldiers
Brandon in da back doing the drums!! Hell yeah
Watching the next gen appreciate what we grew up with, it’s dope.
Man there’s a whole history that went down.
the lyrics that they wrote back then grew with me , to this day his words and many other artist at this time still reseanant with me people hear the swearing the negitive words but had need to sat back and listen to the story. 100 % shady fan to this day white boy that made it though the barriers and got respect purely on his talent . 100% living legend this is just opinion im sorry if it affends anyone xx
I can't believe how amazing you guys are. Just so much fun watching you as much as the film clip. Sorz. I mean that in a normal way.
After what went down w/ Proof, this video just makes me depressed AF. It's crazy to see his old music being revisited by a younger generation and them not knowing the whole back story behind the beef.
Every word em says goes along with the snare drum of the beat.
Crazy my man in the back is the biggest "stan" now. I wasn't an em fan at first either
5:01 dude in the back stilllllll looking at the ig lmaoo
I feel old watching this and I'm only 30, wow I lived this Era, I literally heard these albums as they came out,
I'm very happy with all reactions.. I became one of your subsciber..
Trust me slowly but surely your youtube will be big..
Keep reacting to old school hip hop like this..
Greetings from me, from Indonesia..
Marhsall Mathers: Makes you cry
Sometimes his dark life story is very much related to us in the real life (about love, family, children, about the cruelty of the world, or about whatever it is)
Like the songs Mockingbird, When I'm Gone, Your Never Over, Going Through Changes, Sing For The Moment, Like Toys Soldiers, Rock Bottom, and many more..
FYI: That the Rock Bottom song was made when he had not met Dr. Dre & was not well known, it was said that when he made the song Em had thought about suicide but Em did not give up and Rap saved him so he can become what he is now
Slim Shady: Makes you laugh
Slim Shady is cast with a blonde man who is grumpy & sometimes makes us laugh but a little crazy, controversial words and the diss song is very cruel
Like the songs Nail In The Coffin & Bully (Diss Benzino & Ja Rule), Superman & The Warning (Diss Mariah Carey & Nick), The Real Slim Shady & Without Me (Diss Christina Aguilera, Limp Bizkit, & Moby), Cleanin Out My Closet (Diss his Mother), Leaving Heaven (Diss his Father)
FYI: The song Leaving Heaven was made by Em because he was very disappointed and hated his father because until his father died he did not give a good impression since Em was a child and Em also said he was too fucking coward to never see his grankids, Hailie and the other kids
Eminem: Make you Think
Eminem often makes songs to motivate many people or people who have felt like the life that Em lived
Like the song Lose Yourself, Not Afraid, Guts Over Fear, Beautiful, Beautiful Pain, Till I Collapse And More
FYI: Many people feel helped or excited after hearing the songs
Ohyaaa.. And one more thing, Marshall Mathers, Slim Shady, and Eminem It lives in the same body
Eminem is by far the best his flow was so easy and in his peak was telling story's that we'll yoh forget hes even rapping
Now that I’m older I realize the true meaning
baggy clothes still is doper than todays clothes.
This takes me back to my childhood. My brother joined the military. It was a really hard time for us.
If you was in that era you'd be wearing what everybody else wearing home boy
Baggy pants with airforce ones and a fitted New era cap was the sheeeeeeetttt
Would love to see ur reaction to eminems Despicable and Bully! He goes hard on them
First love your channel you guys crack me up. Second em has been in the rap game over 20 years there's a lot of history. That's a deep rabbit hole I look forward to seeing you explore it. So much great music.
Knowing all the story, damn this video gives me chills
2:44 “that’s not em that’s slim shady” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Note to self: These teenagers are talking about my music that's now considered a classic... I'm officially old 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great song by Eminem most these rappers all sample music from the times I grew up in late 70s 80s and 90s this song was sample by good song from 1989 "Toy Soldiers" by Martika 80s and 90s best times for all kinds music.eminem lyrics are crazy good song sampled from maybe you guys should listen to
I love this song, it's part of my phone playlist that I always listen to 🇧🇷🇧🇷
He compliments the snare PERFECTLY. 💯🐐
EM is the Goat!!!! 🔥🔥🔥
This song was like a prophecy RIP Proof
Now y'all need to watch his song Difficult....its a tribute to Proof❤😔
Thanks for the vids! I’ve been stuck inside with covid but watching your vids helps me through i!
its was proof that got shot eminems best friend
🎯
True but in this case it was bugz, proof played his part as an actor in the video but little did they know, proof died the same way bugz did about a year or 2 after this video was released. Eminem can't watch this ever because of how much of a coincidence it is. It's like em was portraying the future
Proofs in the music video lmao he died afterwards
@@jeffhardytributes1125 :D I laughed when I read your comment. No shit right.
@@miketaylor1824 lmao
❤🧡💛💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍💓
get your full crew together, sit down, put on Dave "black" at the brits (live version only) and have your mind blown. THIS IS A MUST.
That guy in the ER was his best friend proof..the tat that em has on his forearm
i feel like you guys need me in a call there so i can give you guys backstory to every bar you dont get lol. one reason i love old Em is because it all had substance. it all meant something. Now he raps to rap and that's cool, he's earned it to showcase his skill, but old Em literally kept me from being my father.
Your like 30.. calm down
Its funny watching people reactions to old music I was born in the 70's
Best rap group ever in history bone thugs n Harmony
No
Just 👎
Nah
Top 5- UGK ,outkast , do or die ,dayton family , bone
@@bigwillysgarage2301 dayton family 👌👍
This song is DOPE!!!! Word for word
If you knew the story the song would be so much more meaningful
Yo these dudes are one of the best reviewers. Dont get too technical with the songs and just wanna listen to good music. Cheers boys
This is "Like Toy Soldiers" not "Mockingbird"
Y'all lit as hell in this 😂 that's why y'all got the sun glasses
Need some bone thugs reaction
I agree I want them to do The Weed Song by Bone Thugs-N-Harmony
Bruh with the mask on makes these videos...he brings out everyone's personalities...I love y'all videos
yall make me feel old AF , but im loving your reactions!
When the rap beefs were going off there was so much drama.
If you were around for it you knew how many levels deep these bars went
My cousin Lee who was severely disabled went a D12 concert and met Eminem and everyone in the bar of the hotel, he got their autographs tattood on his arm!
My cousins passed away and d12 even wrote to us. Then just after that, this happened to proof 💔
Grew up with this song this is one of my favorites
I love you guys ❤ This song makes me emotional though... 💔
The way he rides the beat on this song is the sickest shit ive ever heard.
Damn, im getting old, these boys in the dark about all this shit
Y'all guys miss all references in this song man... Study Dre beef with Suge, 50 beef with Ja Fool, and Eminem step in, etc ...
