Hello, just wondering what heater you use? According to what I’ve seen online I should get 2 x150w heaters - is this overkill? Also could you show how the components at the back are placed and explain more about them? Thanks! This was a great video and you just gained a subscribe 👍
Im planning on getting the 32g. I had the 15g and liked it, but my main complaints are 1-the lid isn't hinged so on my stand there's nothing to lean it back on. The wall is too far away. 2- there's no space for airline tubing for an airstone. I want floating plants so you need to point both output nozzles down to reduce surface agitation, and therefore need an airstone. I think every tank really needs an airstone even if the output nozzles are pointed upwards a bit to create agitation. It still never breaks the surface of the water which is where the gas exchange occurs. It only gives ripples that dont break the surface like bubbles do. Plus i like the esthetic of bubbles
Congrats Tom on the new tank. Well done on the review and your aquascape looks great. I too have the same tank and opted to go with the matching stand which I later regret buying. Reason being is I could not find a canister filter that would fit inside the stand. The shelf in the stand gets in the way of adding any canister filter and I did not want to cut up the lid to fit a hang on the back filter. I advised Fluval about this and they could not offer any support on this defect and advised I could not make any mods to the shelf as it would affect the structural support for the tank. If you have made any mods to your back filter section please post a video. Would love to see any updates you make. I am thinking of upgrading the stock pump as well but will likely go with the European brand Sicce, Sincra silent 1.0 with 251gph flow rate that you can dial down lower if flow is too high. I later learned the stock lighting is not a true plant light so I may want to change that out later on as well. For now I have low light plants so it works fine for now. I do enjoy the program feature on the lights and am sure it puts less stress on the fish with gradual dim to night mode and gradual change to day mode. You may also want to comment on the lighting schedule you use. Enjoy the tank!!!
Thanks bud appreciate it. Oh really? that is annoying that you can't fit a external filter in the flex cabinet and I agree I wouldn't want to cut up the lid. I am trying to figure out some mods at the moment just to make sure I'm getting the most out the built in filter. I'll keep you updated if I make and changes but to be fair so far I find it sufficient enough. That was another reason I changed the pump was for flow adjustment. Yeah I have noticed the light output isn't great for plants that require a lot of light, I did see when buying the flex that there was a similar fluval plant light but not sure if it fits in the lid next to the aquasky or if adding another aquasky would help. I'll see if I can post up the lighting schedule I use aswell. Enjoy the tank too mate.
You most certainly can add another Aquasky light. If you go to Sean's channel, Pecktec, he does exactly that. Nice tank and scape, butdef needs more plants.
@@tomjames5198 I Did buy the additional light to make sure i had backup if one broke. and it became a Algae Farm. I watched the Bentley Pascoe vid on that light great help. Two lights is s lot of light and I currently have mine set to 50% all but blue at 5%. 12hrs ramped very gradually. As for filtration? I replaced what came with bagged seachem matrix in the foam insert. I won’t mention the stocking level but look at a train station at rush hour…no problem…
Great video mate. I very much like your tank setup you have done there. I also have the fluval flex tank. But with mine I got last week is the 57 litre tank, I took your advice to with going out buying the correct fish tank stand for this tank. This tank looks really modern and up to date with amazing filter system. But only snag for me with this tank being a strange size 57, I’m restricted to buy only small fish for this tank. But overall I’m very pleased with tank. Only just set up so I wait to see how the lighting system works
Thanks bud, I really appreciate it. How did I not know about these, such a great idea and I'm surprised fluval haven't made something like this themselves. Thank you for letting me know, only thing that lets it down is how much they cost but still might be worth the investment.
Hello Tom how are you? Thank you for the review I just bought this tank but in my country you can’t get the extra light for this tank and Idk the length that I should get, do you know which one is the best for this tank? Because there are 3 different lengths, I was thinking that maybe the fluval aquasky 24-36” ?? But I’m not sure , could you help me please? Thanks!!
Thank you for this. I dont know if I should buy the black or white fluval, I cant decide.the white one is more estetic I think but I dont want algee to appear after one week on the white background, therefore black is better i think. I think ur tank looks great by the way.
No worries, glad it could be helpful, yeah I thought the same as you, I think the white would need abit more maintenance to keep it looking clean, not sure how long it would stay white for that's why I ended getting the black but the white does look decent. Thanks bud appreciate it, Let me know what you decide.
Hello there, I just became your subscriber after I watch your video about the Fluval Flex 123l, and Yes I already purchase one. I have side question, how you do get this distress look on the background, where is the rear part of the filtration system, you can see it in 1:05? It looks very nice Sir :) Thank you for your time, looking forward for another videos
Hello Tom. The tank is very beautiful. I am about to get one but I really dont like the stand it comes with. I am looking into another one ( juwel rio 180) which is very robust, but i am not very sure about the exact width of the tank. It is stated everywhere that its exactly 40cm. The juwel stand is exactly 41cm. Could you please confirm me that the width of the bottom of the aquarium measured from the outer edge is exactly 40 cm. I have a doubt because the original stand of the flex is stated with a width of 42.5 cm and i dont know why. Thank you very much!
Hi there, thank you bud, appreciate it. The tank and peak bow so in the middle is slightly under 40cm but as it curves in the depth is 36cm at the bottom of the tank, it's also 82.5cm wide. Hope this helps you out.
Great review, many many thanks. It has given me the knowledge that I can lift the tank myself which Is why I need smaller tanks for where I live.i have a small 36 litre with a curved front for my shrimps so I know what you mean by the distortion. How noisy is the pump? Can you give me a compare as the tank would go into my bedroom.
Yo, if you ever read this, how deep is it at its base? I have a kitchen counter where id love it to stand, but i only have about a 36-37 cm ledge. I dont know if on the website the deepness describes the part thats sticking out or the base. Awesome vid and thanks for your response!
Hi there, the tank and peak bow so in the middle is slightly under 40cm but as it curves in the depth is 36cm at the bottom of the tank, it's also 82.5cm wide. Hope this helps you bud.
Hey, thanks bud. I would think you could as there is space left even with the heater in there, would depend on what type though, I couldn't recommend a UV as I have never had one but my heater is a Tetra HT 100.
Hi Tom, At 1:04 I see you have a lid stand.. hat kind is that? Based on your review i bought the flex123 by the way! And did you already rescape the tank?
Hi there, oh it's actually a old planting stick that works for propping the lip up but there are some you can buy on eBay I think. Oh decent, how are you finding it? I haven't got around to it yet due to not being able to get to the lfs at the moment but hopefully soon.
Great looking tank and landscaping. At the beginning of the video you separated the sand from the black ground - are you still happy with that layout? Over time has the material crossed the barrier due to water flow, etc?
Hi, exactly the tank I've been eying. I'm new to aquariums and this will be my second tank. My first one is an aqualeddy 60 that came with filter and heater and they both hang on the insides of the tank. Do I need to know anything more to utilise this tank? I'm gonna get some cichlids eventually. Any tips would be greatly appreciated....
Thanks bud, It's an ikea kallax unit with ply on the back to give it more strength, then a oak worktop to add more strength an give it a flat surface. So abit of a diy job. Apparenty though if you don't have there stand it means you don't get a warranty, which I guess makes sense as it might be put on a inadequate stand.
Hi, I’m considering this tank as well. I’ve seen some other reviews out there that say the temperature tends to run a bit warmer than the heater setting, possibly because of the lightning…any similar issues?
Hi bud, yeah I did find that the tank ran warm which wasn't as issue in the winter as the heater just wasn't on as much but in the summer I did have to prop the lid open with a gap to let air flow across the top of the tank but wasn't to much of a issue, could depend where you live and what you plan to keep in the tank though.
A bit of noise from the pump, but not too bad. It mentions suction feet for the pump in the manual, but mine didn’t include them. Not sure if that’s actually optional? Thank you for the reply! :)
Hi Tom, I think I watched this video 30 times! Realy love how you created the scape! And I think I will buy the 123! I am realy curious how it evolved. Can you please share a picture or video? 😃
Hi there, oh thank you I appreciate it. I'm actually thinking of rescaping for a new look so might do a update video then. But might be able to take a picture at the weekend when I give it a clean.
That setup looks great. Is that without supplemental CO2? I've been using mine for about a month. My biggest complaint is having the filter mechanisms inside the tank, thereby reducing the usable geography/space. Other than that, it needs supplemental aeration, and for that I ordered the Shark by Sicce -- scheduled to arrive tomorrow.
Beautiful tank and I'm quite sold on getting the Fluval, so thanks for the review. Would you mind listing what fish and plants you're keeping in there? Not to be a copy cat but the style you have is pretty much what I would like to do with my tank. Cheers!
my english is not the best so i am sure u said something about the noise of the pump but maybe i did not understand it right. my question is, because i want to buy the flex 123, how loud is the pump? i read comments from people saying its very loud and other saying u will not hear it. so what is the truth? :D i will have the tank in my living room so i dont wanna hear always a bruuuummmmmmmmmm ... can u tell me how loud it is and if its loud if there is an alternativ pump that i can buy to replace the original one. thanks a lot in advance for ur help
Hi bud, from my experience the pump was quite loud and when put into the back of the tank was even louder, so for me it had to be replaced. Even the one I have now still has a slight hum and would still be heard if the room was quite. I replaced mine with the eheim compact 1000 pump, here is the link - amzn.to/2IO2PRH. Hope this helps.
Tom James thanks a lot mate 👍🏻 this help me a lot! by the way your tank looks amazing! i hope mine will look more or less as good as yours! u did a great job! thanks and wish u a nice weekend
I've got one for about 3 month's now, I swapped out the filter with a external one. I have put the original filter of the flex in now, but it's sucking all the water out of the filter area so to speak. Do you know how to stop it?
Hi bud, I'm not sure but fluval has just released as saltwater version of the tank which is basically the same but with as protein skimmer in the back and the marine 3.0 led light, so I would assume that yours would just fit in the same brackets. Should be a simple swap but just in case there a different size might be worth contacting them.
No worries, yeah there is space for two lights in the lid, comes with the extra bracket's to mount the second light aswell. So you might be able to keep both of them.
I've had the 15g before and it comes about 4 inches in to the display area. I'm going to get this one as well soon. I know on this one the left and right sides come less out than the center section does. So it's different depending on where in the tank you're measuring.
Is there a way to add oxygen to the pump outlet? Normally there’s a Venturi inlet so you can oxygenate the water with the pump flow instead of having an airstone
Unfortunately not that I know of without doing some sort of custom modification, I have found the outlets to move the water surface enough for the exchange of oxygen. Air bubbles are mainly only there to move the surface of the water as Oxygen is provided by surface water movement. Hope this helps bud.
Thanks mate, appreciate it. Most of it was from my local fish shop, just went through all the different types of rock and wood they had until I found some the right shape and size. The artificial reef rocks I got online but it was so long ago now I can't find them unfortunately. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
Thanks bud, I think you would struggle with a background for this tank unless you just used a black background on the two sides of the filter because it has the same black pattern on the back that it has around the top of the tank.
Hey bud, it's actually an ikea kallax unit with ply on the back to strengthen it, then a oak worktop to add more strength an give it a flat surface. So abit of a diy job. Apparently though if you don't have there stand it means you don't get a warranty, I guess makes sense as it might be put on an inadequate stand. hope this helps.
Sorry to bother you again, I plan to do the same. Can you by chance recall the size of play wood you used on the back to support? I would like to get the cabinet that cake with it, but with children it’s not optimal. Thanks again for your time!
You could add a air pump with a air stone but as long as you have enough surface moment and not much bio film on the surface you shouldn't need one bud.
Good luck with that pattern around the top. I give it five months, that's how long mine lasted on the 13.5. Avoid touching it all you want , it's still going to start coming off. Keep a razor blade handy :)
I have heard this from looking online, I think like you said most people scrape it all off with a knife but I'm 7 months in a still all on there but time will tell.
@@tomjames5198 It was a gradual disappearance., so much so, that it started to drive me crazy, so I scraped it all off, one time. The good part is, the tank looks bigger :-)
Nice review:) the lighting on this flex is for fish only / low tech plants , which I would research on. To require High tech plants you would require the second lighting unit. In one comment below if you bought the white flex as a suggestion you could cover the background with Artificial walling? In the event of green Algae in the early stage of cycling the tank.I agree with you the lighting set up ....just stick to the auto set up from day to moonlight settings, the other gimmicks that come with the lighting setup are just not worth the while. On the whole nice set up :) you should have a 6500 kelvin lighting and par reading if you go for high Tech plants.
Your not meant to fill it up to that line. The water is meant to pour out like a waterfall to give air bubbles. I have the same one and there is meant to be a gap.
The honeycomb pattern at the top is designed to hide the water line, you don't need to have air bubbles just water movement on top to allow the oxygen to exchange.
Tom James my fish almost died having it that way. Wasn’t enough oxygen. I have a oxygen reader and it was very low. I left a gap so it could flow like a mini waterfall and the oxygen was 100% better. My fish swims under the bubbles as it goes in to the water. It’s a fun thing for him.
The thank has been great for what I wanted at the time, I'm now getting more into aquascaping so looking at upgrading to a open top tank with a external filter. Thanks bud, appreciate it.
Hey, nice video! I'm thinking of getting this tank too shortly. My only concern is that the small fish will get through the small grates in the back and get stuck. Have you had any issues with this or did you buy grate covers?
Hi there, you would be right with your concern as I have some kuli loaches which now mostly live inside the filter area, like you said I should have found a way to put some sort of cover or grate over the intakes but it hard to do now the substrate is in. I'm not even sure if it would be possible due to the design of the filter. I'm about to drain the take to add soil so I will see if I can find a way to do this and let you know.
@@tomjames5198 bugger! yeah a bit of a silly design... they sell grate covers for the smaller models (www.amazon.co.uk/Fluval-Replacement-Filter-Intake-Screen/dp/B077NLS8MS) but not the 123L which is dumb. Maybe just some foam down the back will work. Let me know how you get on :)
The biggest problem with all fluval tanks its a light systems! Great dosing, a smart and practical filtration systems!... But lighting are always a spoiled apple!!!
Beautiful aquarium. I'm changing my gravel for sand and trying live plants in my aquarium soon. Love your set up. I just posted a update on my aquarium ( new subscriber ) 🙏 👍
Hi Tom,
Can you please advise which Eihem pump model you used as a replacement for the supplied pump?
I have this tank and I do love it I just wish the lid had a hinge idead of having to prob it up against the wall when doing water changes
And also what substrates did you use? Sand and gravel? Thanks!!

Hi can u tell me which replacement filter pump you brought please
Hi, I replaced mine with the eheim compact 1000 pump, here is the link - amzn.to/2IO2PRH.
Wow, great system and you put my videos of our system to shame. Keep it up!
Thanks bud, your set up looks decent, very natural look which I really like.
Thank you 😃
I've got one for about 3 month's now, I swapped out the filter with a external one. I have put the original filter of the flex in now, but it's sucking all the water out of the filter area so to speak. Do you know how to stop it?
If I have a Marine 3.0 Fluval light is there a way to replace the Aquasky ?
Hi bud, I'm not sure but fluval has just released as saltwater version of the tank which is basically the same but with as protein skimmer in the back and the marine 3.0 led light, so I would assume that yours would just fit in the same brackets. Should be a simple swap but just in case there a different size might be worth contacting them.
Tom James thank you, does your version have a extra space to place a second light?
No worries, yeah there is space for two lights in the lid, comes with the extra bracket's to mount the second light aswell. So you might be able to keep both of them.
You bought it at a good price where from ??
Hi, how you getting on with the tank 2 years down the line?
What are you using for the pre-filter seems like its nice snug fit.
Hi what set do you ha e on auto for day and evening? Thanks
Hi there, I've got mine on the pro section, I can't remember exactly what I set but I will check and post them on here over the weekend.
Nice looking set-up. Did that thin, protective mat that you placed under the tank actually come with the aquarium kit?
Sorry for the late reply. It does come with the aquarium kit.
@@tomjames5198 thx 👍
I know this is a old video so dunno if I'll get a reply but how far into the tank does the filter come?
I've had the 15g before and it comes about 4 inches in to the display area. I'm going to get this one as well soon. I know on this one the left and right sides come less out than the center section does. So it's different depending on where in the tank you're measuring.
Hi. Your background in your tank, have you got a aqua poster put on? Maybe my eyes but mines all black. Great video
Hi bud, sorry for the late reply. Mine had the same pattern that it has around the top of the tank all across the back I think.
Thanks mate, really good review that!
Where did you get your stand?
Hi,you change original pump?(noisy) .I see eheim pump,which model?Thanks
Hi bud, yeah its Eheim Compact 1000 Pump, here is also a link amzn.to/3358kES
Ok,thanks for help
Is there a way to add oxygen to the pump outlet? Normally there’s a Venturi inlet so you can oxygenate the water with the pump flow instead of having an airstone
Unfortunately not that I know of without doing some sort of custom modification, I have found the outlets to move the water surface enough for the exchange of oxygen. Air bubbles are mainly only there to move the surface of the water as Oxygen is provided by surface water movement. Hope this helps bud.
Great review, tank looks great ! Can I ask where did you get your rocks and driftwood from? I love the aqua scaping
Thanks mate, appreciate it. Most of it was from my local fish shop, just went through all the different types of rock and wood they had until I found some the right shape and size. The artificial reef rocks I got online but it was so long ago now I can't find them unfortunately. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
Hi Tom
What size Airstone do you use
I have 3.5w flowing at 2.5l/min.
Is it ok?
Hi bud, I didn't have a airstone on my tank, I found there was enough water movement on the surface but the more surface agitation the better.
@@tomjames5198
Thanks Tom
Hows the tank now coming along
Hi there! Great video. Do you have any recommendations for a background (maybe even a 3d one)? Thanks!
Thanks bud, I think you would struggle with a background for this tank unless you just used a black background on the two sides of the filter because it has the same black pattern on the back that it has around the top of the tank.
Nice tank looking at ordering one when I get paid tomorrow do I need to seal this tank
Hi mate, what do you mean by sealing it?
Tom James I mean inside the tank round the edges with aquarium sealant to stop any leaks
Hi Tom
I've bought this today along with 10kg bag of sand substrate.
Is that enough?
Hi bud, unfortunately I can't remember how much I used as I had some left over from my previous tank.
@@tomjames5198
Once wet , im assuming 10kg is enough ...I can always top up with smaller bag .
Hows the tank btw Tom?
I don't have the tank anymore bud, I ended up giving aquascaping a try with a different tank so I could add co2 and a external filter.
@@tomjames5198
Sounds good Tom
You must do a video as the one you did was pretty good pal
Hello, where did you get the stand that the tank is on?
Hey bud, it's actually an ikea kallax unit with ply on the back to strengthen it, then a oak worktop to add more strength an give it a flat surface. So abit of a diy job. Apparently though if you don't have there stand it means you don't get a warranty, I guess makes sense as it might be put on an inadequate stand. hope this helps.
Thank this was great info! I think I might give it a shot as well.
Sorry to bother you again, I plan to do the same. Can you by chance recall the size of play wood you used on the back to support? I would like to get the cabinet that cake with it, but with children it’s not optimal. Thanks again for your time!
*ply wood and * came with
Sorry for the late reply for some reason I didn't get any notifications, how did you get on?
Hi! What kind of heater did you get?
Hey, I've got a 100 watt heater, the tetra HT100. Here is a link - amzn.to/2RzM4yy
Does the cloth you put under tank come with it ?
I use polystyrene under mine
It is a thin polystyrene sheet and it did come with it bud.
@@tomjames5198
I know now as I opened lid of box:)
what substrate have you used?
How do you add air for the fish
I thought it being curve was the selling point.
Thanks bud and appreciate the info. I might look into getting a second light, as I'm looking to add more plants.
How's the tank, Tom? great review.
What a good video how do not have more subs
Thank you, appreciate it.
Nice one brudda!
Thanks bud
The biggest problem with all fluval tanks its a light systems! Great dosing, a smart and practical filtration systems!... But lighting are always a spoiled apple!!!
Yeah I feel like a more powerful light would have been better.
Can you add air pump to this tank?
You are able to add a air pump, there is a gap in the lid at the back where you can run the air pipe into the tank.
....how come I never seen your channel?..lol..hi
5 people are mad they didn't get one
Beautiful aquarium. I'm changing my gravel for sand and trying live plants in my aquarium soon. Love your set up. I just posted a update on my aquarium ( new subscriber ) 🙏 👍
but.....where is the unboxing? clickbait :D?
Sorry, it ended up being more of a box opening then a in depth unboxing.
Also bought this and found it really noisy 😂
Yeah was abit frustrating until I got the eheim pump.
@@tomjames5198 Now I have eheim pump too. 😎
aaaaahhh Im Marine fish..
Will you be doing a review of the PS5 when it is released?
