The Pianist! No Words! He compliments her every note. Doing just enough. Every chord supports her musical lines so perfectly. He is a singers dream. And they are both young, but, highly aware of what to do, how much & when! The chordal arrangement he is playing sound so other worldly, totally divine, & so well put together!
The instrumentalists often don't really get credit, people are only interested in the singer. Not do they get enough room to play, that's why I quite dislike singers. But also why I like Cecile, because she shows her pianist isn't just there to support her.
AJ... instrumentalists fucking deserve credit. Period. You're not any special or superior with your elitist attitude, you seem almost happy that one of your favorite player is not credited because it seems to make you feel better about yourself knowing not a lot of people know about him... and that's sad... and! Those who know... know. ;)
Eric G I completely understand he’s accompanying her but my message was more for the people commenting on the video since society in general pays more attention to the singer. But like I said both are amazing artists.
GOOD LORD! That range, that tone, the cleanness, the power and the ability to soften it up. Skills...hearing a mix of Amy Wine house, Billie Holiday, and Natalie Cole. And that BAD brother on the keys...sipping his tea like it ain't nothing.☕ 🐸 Lovin his sound. Like a mix of classical and Jazz in the most tasteful way.
You should not compare singers to compliment them. She sounds NOTHING like Amy, Billie, or Natalie. She is unique just like those other singers you mentioned.
What a freaking genious on the piano, gosh! About Salvant, no words, she's just magic! I love the blend between classical music and jazz breaking the boundaries and basic notions while remaining authentic. Truly mesmerizing music! It reminds me of Scriabin and his synesthetic atonal music, so colorful and rich!
I was trying to put my finger on the piano arrangement's provenance, as it were. I can hear the Scriabin references, but also Barber in a couple of places, all with a little inspiration from Debussy?!
The ease as she transfers into other registers. The way she subtley colors her voice, She's close to the source. It comes from the root. Cecile is wonderful.
SHE'S THE MODERN DAY SARAH VAUGHN, ELLA FITZGERALD AND BILLIE HOLIDAY ALL WRAPPED UP IN ONE. THANK YOU FOR HOLDING ON TO THIS RARE STYLE OF SINGING, WHICH IS TRUE SINGING FROM THE HEART
For me it's more Sarah than anything. Both pianists and I think this is how a young Sarah would have sounded with today's recording technology. Now add the songwriting and dramatic sensibilty and my mind is blown.
Salvant and Fortner! What a pair! The amount of talent here is beyond compare. Total respect and admiration for these incredibly talented and passionate musicians, and I'm so glad they agreed to do a Tiny Desk concert.
I literally was in disbelief when I read that title. One of my absolute favourite artists on one of my absolute favourite UA-cam channels. This is insane.
What an absolute gem. She's like all of my favorite female jazz vocalists wrapped into one lovely voice. And the pianist... oh my word. Thanks again, NPR!
I saw her last night (6.3.22) at Chicago's Symphony Center for the first time and I guess my reaction is WOW!!! She's unique in all aspects of her "aura". Her style is her own and she definitely owns it 100%. Her voice is pure and reminds me of part jazz singer, part storyteller, part broadway musical performer. She does what they say in an old baseball terminology. She "grips it and rips it!!!!!" WONDERFUL!
Are yall Tone Deaf or just Music Deaf. This is Terrible granted its Funkey but it's so far from good. I'm very tastefull and love many styles of music but when it comes to this kind of shart its that Fukery
@@brandoncuts82 get your sticky thumbs out your ears. Like Mommy taught you, if ya got nothing nice to say, say nothing. But srsly think you're the deaf one here.
One of my absolute favorite singers ever since I heard her perform in Harlem years ago! And that piano! I feel like I'm being treated to the golden days of jazz.
Definitely could get more recognition from a larger audience, but winning three grammy's for best jazz album for three consecutive releases is a fair bit of recognition.
I was late to class because I was hooked to this episode! Truly love her voice and the influences that she use to develop her voice. And her accompanist is off the chain.
She’s phenomenal! Always unconventional ideas to mix in with the traditional and the chops to pull it all off. She also happens to be a really sweet person❣️
Her singing is exquisite.....along with her artistic talent....both are beautiful and fluid! What a wonderful match with the pianist Sullivan Fortner forging contrapuntal music.
Oh how I hear the voice of the the elders,.. she is definitely standing on the shoulders of Ella, Lady day Sarah Vaughan and Nancy Wilson.. and The pianist similar to style of Horace Silver .. WOW.. just WOW..🎙️🎹🎙️🎹🎼
I like her singing . I got into her about a year ago when I heard her sing "I didn't know why time it was" so this was cool 2 catch on YT she reminds me of Abbey Lincoln sometimes
I feel some serious Dinah Washington vibes coming from this beautiful Sista. Im a hip hop dude but I know ALL music(we sample everything so eventually you learn about everything) I wish her continued success as she's starting to gain quite the following.
I know what you mean, I suffered from the same problem and listening to jazz was the remedy. As a bonus I discovered many brillant jazz musicians I had never heard of before and now I no longer fear insomnia.
cécile is my favourite contemporary singer and as if her voice isn't mesmerizing enough, that she tends to play with one of my favourite pianists (an @apaPianists winner at that) makes every performance extra special. pure magic.
I’ve never been captivated so quickly before. The first note the pianist played hit me so hard I stopped everything I was doing, sat down and embraced the beauty of this art.
Mclorin commits to every note, every syllable in order to convey the intent of the lyric. There is nothing and no one like her in music. RIP Nancy Wilson. All hail the new Queen of jazz vocalists. Sullivan is a magician and so is Aaron Diehl her fellow band member.
It has been a while since I’ve been introduced to someone’s voice and instantly stopped in my tracks; I put my phone down and sat still listening with closed eyes. This is so beautiful ❤️
I love watching her content and experiencing her music. She's incredible and her descriptions and storytelling in this video are everything!! I got really emotional from the stories of her life and relate to the people pleaser element. I love that for her, music can provide the commentary she needs and wants to express clearly and creatively.
Never heard of her but I messed with her aesthetic in the thumbnail. So I clicked and I'm not disappointed, I'm super impressed and she has a new fan now.
Cecile's vocal style is remarkably reminiscent of Sarah Vaughan and Betty Carter.. Fortner is also an incredible pianist. This concert was superb from start to finish.

A different but another wonderfully sensitive accompanist is Jacky Terrasson. Their cover of 'Oh My Love' on the Gouache album is a perfect gem.
Sullivan is amazing!

Thanks for the recommendation
I totally agree.
YOU: "He compliments her every note".............What does She do for Him ?
The pianist isn’t given enough credit. His playing was captivating. Amazing musicians.
The instrumentalists often don't really get credit, people are only interested in the singer. Not do they get enough room to play, that's why I quite dislike singers.

Its awesome he learned it so quickly, considering she wrote it. She sings and writes, so thats plenty enough to clap about.
SugarDaddy 91 Sullivan Fortner has his own quartet. I would say he's recognized and gets enough credit. He's here to accompany her not steal her show.
Eric G I completely understand he’s accompanying her but my message was more for the people commenting on the video since society in general pays more attention to the singer. But like I said both are amazing artists.

@BERTRAM CLARK jeanne Lee ?
@BERTRAM CLARK I definitely hear Ella, the range, control and clean tones.
You should not compare singers to compliment them. She sounds NOTHING like Amy, Billie, or Natalie. She is unique just like those other singers you mentioned.
And Ella! I hear Ella too.
Did she write that song Fog??
That Piano player is the truth....plays very hard stuff with ease

❤ Yes! For the pianist to have just learned one of the tracks en route...superb!
Check out ran Blake and Jeannie Lee it's the same just done 30 years ago

First 30secs. I passed OUT!
This is gold! Thanks NPR!

Before I saw your comment.. I swear I thought the same thing!! Lol

I know right?!? Her voice is so vintage! #LoveIt
@@edmcguigan3501 Totally agree, especially in the low register, amazing.

You should check out her song “tell me what they’re saying can’t be true” it’s amazing
That last song made me cry. Wow. Her voice. Wow.
One of my absolute favorite singers ever since I heard her perform in Harlem years ago! And that piano! I feel like I'm being treated to the golden days of jazz.
This is some of the best music I've heard in a while... How are both these artists not more well known?
You have to be looking for this level of quality musicianship. You found it. I found it. The music selects the listener. 😎
Cecile is maybe better known in Europe. Found her 1 year ago. It is still unbelievable how she expresses every single note this way.
It seems like an unlimited number of artists that don't get enough appreciation.
Definitely could get more recognition from a larger audience, but winning three grammy's for best jazz album for three consecutive releases is a fair bit of recognition.
She is all class, coming over here for a concert n I'm contemplating on getting tickets 😊
Superb keyboards. Creative use of atonal elements . Lovely vocals great artistry a nice departure from mainline music.
the chair earring is the cherry on top

I was late to class because I was hooked to this episode! Truly love her voice and the influences that she use to develop her voice. And her accompanist is off the chain.
Blew my mind, made me cry, took me to a very happy, peaceful place....I will be listening often.
She’s phenomenal! Always unconventional ideas to mix in with the traditional and the chops to pull it all off. She also happens to be a really sweet person❣️
Simply wonderful. The direction music should go in the 21st century.
Exactly!
That last song always hits me like a train. Her voice amplfies the pain by 9000. Iam shook everytime I listen to this, great art.
Beautiful! This girl is a legend in the being...
Her singing is exquisite.....along with her artistic talent....both are beautiful and fluid! What a wonderful match with the pianist Sullivan Fortner forging contrapuntal music.
Wow, this gave me such chills. Sullivan is amazing. Omie Wise was just over the top. Amazing.
There is a eerie undertone to every note he plays and I am living for it!
Divine voice. Amazing performer. Sweet and powerful in every possible way. Gorgeous. I just loved this Tiny Desk.
My body needed this.
This is easily one of the best Tiny Desk shows I've seen so far. Her voice is unbelievable.
HAHA I was trying to give it a heart instead of a like... She is awesome. Props to the pianist as well!
Lol

K.M Hunt Yes, Abbey Lincoln!
What a crazy duo, Sullivan Fortner, just full of colour and expression.
Wow, she’s singing from her soul bone.
I feel some serious Dinah Washington vibes coming from this beautiful Sista. Im a hip hop dude but I know ALL music(we sample everything so eventually you learn about everything) I wish her continued success as she's starting to gain quite the following.

Such an incredible voice. Remarkable essence in timbre and timing like Billie Holiday. Thanks for sharing!
Whoever is setting up these concerts I hope has already received a raise. Ms. Salvant's voice is ah-mazing. My God. Big up. Sak pase. ,🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹🇭🇹
I’ve never been captivated so quickly before. The first note the pianist played hit me so hard I stopped everything I was doing, sat down and embraced the beauty of this art.

She just hitting some ignorant notes!!!! Ignorant phenomenal jewel in the Tiny Desk!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
HER EARRINGS ♥
Yes! The tiny chair!!!
my goodness...i love this the clarity of your voice and passion and energy of both you and the pianist.
WOW..JUST WOW!..Her voice is stylish & appropriate..especially for this type of music. She stayed true to the art.
Two of the greatest young jazz artist out there right now. Cécile McLorin Salvant is the heir to Sarah Vaughn's crown.
Amen.
This was a perfect retelling of the true spirit of jazz. The piano player was the background jewel of her songs.
Looks like I'll be in the jazz tent to close second friday. What a singer!!!
This was so beautiful! I find myself appreciating jazz more and more these days😊🎧
magical union of the GIANTS .... pleasure to hear you
Superbe.magnifique Cécile et Sullivan.

Cecile performs with Jazz at Lincoln Center Orch. and she's so so wonderful
Her frames are dope
I'd love to know who makes them.

Beautiful, dreamy voice and exquisite piano playing.
She's amazing and very beautiful !
This is absolute perfection. Thank you eternally, thank you npr
I could her the tradition of stride piano playing as well as modern harmonic structures all alive and well in that first tune. That makes me smile.
Saw the thumbnail and _knew_ this was gonna be the TRUTH 🙌🏾
Cecile is absolutely AWESOME!!! She is "The Voice of Jazz." I love her, and her reflections in singing is mind blowing to me.
Her voice is so beautiful and refreshing. Her voice quenches my soul.❤

Incredible Incredible vocals. Excellent use of her vocal registers!!!!
Vocally she is something out of this galaxy and much love to the pianist
Enchanting and haunting at the same time. How have I not heard of heard of her?
Hmm Maybe Spotify has blinded your Music choices?? DOWNBEAT magazine. The printed issues.
Went to download some music after listening. Omg, I’m in love. Thank you!! Also getting some Blossom Dearie and Helen Merrill vibes. 💕💕

Both such studied MASTERS! I hear so many greats in these GREATS!!
Genius. Absolute genius. There is no place to hide when there is just a singer and a piano. Then just the singer.
Loving every note of it.
(cute earrings btw)
Wow unbelievable! Incredible voice! I can't wait to see you perform in Haiti again!
Clean clear spot on. Little but of Upshaw n also O’Day with her uvula-less straight tone. Killer. N Fortner is a Genius.
4am squad in the building.

Cecile, you're great!! definitely one of the most interesting jazz singers nowadays.
Come to Israel, please!!

I woke up to find this concert this morning. It is going to be a good day .
Delicate vibes all through with some jazz sass. Digging it from Aus :)
this is the best thing out right now hands down
Cecile's vocal style is remarkably reminiscent of Sarah Vaughan and Betty Carter.. Fortner is also an incredible pianist. This concert was superb from start to finish.
