What you guys missed talking about the Nicolai Saturn 16 MGU is the frame sizes. A XXL frame with 555mm reach and 678mm stack is just incredible for us taller bikers.
Thanks guys - this format is working really well
Glad you enjoy it!
Have to agree. Some of the best content on UA-cam period
Pinion MGU bike market prices start at around 5000€ for a commuter bike from Pegasus and it’s 7500€ for an All Mountain from Bulls which is actually worth to look into.
Never thought id see will g in a podcast but im glad to see him here
Appreciate u bro! 🤝
@@willgreenfield yea man. Im a long time fan of yours. Id love to see you down here at Hadleigh for a ride
Loving the podcast
The Nicolai Pinion is such a beast ❤
In regards to the RISE profile change on the fly, enabling "fine tune" in e-tube allows more power levels to be added, kind of similar to Speshy "microtune". Set "party" profile and enable more levels from low torque power up to full boost with plenty of levels in between. Profile conundrum solved.
As an analog bike guy, light weight e-bikes for the win, I'm with Will on this one. Although, having ridden Will's bikes in the past, he used to run some weird ass rear shock settings which might explain the feet blowing off situation 😂(maybe something to dig into in a future pod...). I'm also with Rob on the size specific stays - like being able to pick any size t-shirt, but only being able to pick size small trousers... Current bike has 452mm rear center and it's not slowed me down!
Laza i can assure you my rear shock settings are now perfectly efficient thank u 😂😂😂
As i said in my comments in last weeks episode, Orbea had it nailed with the Rise and made my thoughts on what would make it near perfect and they did most of it by the following week. 🤣
Fascinating, Thank you guys❤
Interesting Video. I believe the Pinion has 17% change between every gear.
I just can’t believe POLE is going away…. TERRIBLE SHAME
My VOIMA is my favorite ebike without a doubt. LOVE IT !!!
Question for Adam: if every brand new bike has a 2 year warranty, regardless of whether ownership has changed (1:21:03), why do some manufacturers say - here's an example from the FAQs on Whyte's website - 'Whyte bikes warranty is only for the original purchaser of a product and doesn’t transfer to subsequent keepers'?
It’s interesting that their website says that, as unfortunately the term “Warranty” refers to something legally abiding for the type of product that is being sold, and then “Guarantee” is anything that is offered as a extra for a companies belief in the product but is not legal.
A lot of brands won’t publicise this but in fact in the UK (and EU law as well), but is still the case.
I think the key point of a warranty is for “Manufacturers defects” and so this shouldn’t matter between owners, but more down to is the bike fit for purpose etc.
Profiles can be changed via the menu selection on the controller.
New bike discounts have been mega recently. The used market is pointless currently, as the sale new bikes are cheaper than people can sell their own bikes on eBay.
I bought 2x brand new 2023 Trek Rails a few weeks ago :
- Rail 5 for £3k (RRP £5.2k)
- Rail 9.7 for £4.6k (RRP £6.4k)
Basically meant I didn’t have to wait another year of saving to get me and my son eBikes ⚡️👍🏻
Excuse.. just wondering if these bikes have cruise control .. ;) cheers ..("works for me" tks)
If they get a 170-180 mgu in the USA with larger battery under 7k Im a buyer.
To go back to basics. An ultra light emtb, why? Unless you have to pick it up and carry it. The battery and motor power is there on a standard emtb to take you anywhere and the weight has been stated as being an advantage for stability over the bumps. Indeed losing a stone in weight yourself gives over 6kg weight saving and at no cost!
5kg makes a difference to how a bike handles in certain situations. On a technical ride that extra weight makes a difference when you need to bunny hop, change direction and pop off features.
Zerode are doing belt driven Dh bikes
Hands down the best comment in this podcast "a lot of people like size 7 shoes... Because they fit them..." 😂😂
@RobRidesEMTB Interesting to hear about over-stroking the rear shock. What shock size would you use and what wheel travel would it result in?
I found it interesting about Nicolai's reluctance to put longer fork given that their own bike tech spec mentioned the maximal fork length at 602mm.
I look forward to your extended test and video review thereafter. I enjoyed your review of Pole Voima and bought one based on it, but given the Pole's bankruptcy (so no more warranty) I am looking at other bike options. Nicolai Saturn 16 MGU is high on that list, though I would prefer a 180mm-180mm or even 190mm-190mm version.
Aroun 166mm at the rear. Not massively more! I do think it’s capable of up to 200mm boxxer given that length of 602mm
@@RobRidesEMTB I hope they will have the 180mm-190mm version in the line-up in the future, hopefully before the chain stays on my Voima breaks. Or if not they, maybe someone else in Europe 🤞
Rob, Can you do a test with the extender on Party mode to see how much assistance drops out before moving across to the big battery.
I did in Spain already. I roughly got 500 metres of climbing then it dropped off a lot.
Is this on the New RS+ System?
Yes
'These private investors aren't your bike people'
Well said.
Another element to only seeing 160 travel mgus is that they MAY be trying to iron out any kinks on a less demanding bike and avoiding any negative press on the matter. It comes with engineering. At the end of the day you have to test it n the field and there may be production issues as well. A factory may not be able/willing to pump out to your exact specs and so...
I was hoping to purchase an mgu bike this year, but ended up with an oso for how long they're taking to get to the US.
A quando una tua prova della Moterra Sl??
Saluti dalla Liguria (Italia)👋
The next 5 years or so will be very exciting, I'm hopeful for a 200mm travel, MGU belt-driven downhill beast that's smooth, quiet, maintenance free and weighs under 20kg due to the introduction of solid state batteries. Adaptive suspension like in cars would be great too, so you can adjust travel and go from downhill beast to nimble trail dancer at the push of a button.
12 speed derailleurs are too vulnerable. I'm back on 11s GX and happy for it.
One Cog will not make much difference if any....
Is the podcast ready for down loads on apple?? Be great to listen on king journeys..
Yes, it’s on Apple, Spotify and Amazon music 👍
@@RobRidesEMTB thanks rob just added it to my podcast list.. really good listen great content as always keep up the good work bud 👍🏻
I heard you guys talking about the clunk shifts in 2 of the 12 speeds on the Pinion MGU. That has been designed out now and all their shifts are quiet! Though even with all this technology, $12,000 is still too much!
I’m really keen to try one on the trails, especially hearing this. Unfortunately my only experience with one so far was at the eurobike car park.
Thanks for this- will be good try try it again!
It isn't designed out. The clunks are between gears 4-5 and 8-9. between those gears 2 points are changed they can mechanically not eliminate that clunk.
@@headslash55 Last time I saw one ridden on You Tube you could not hear the Clunks.....there was never any comments about like when I first saw the ride reviews.and I also thought there was mention of the new design being quiet on all shifts!
@RobRidesEMTB .... Rob, remember you said at the end of your podcast that you'd post a link to the live streams for the UCI World Cup at Fort William? Is there any chance you could post that now? The elite and juniors qualifying and semi finals are live streaming today for free, but can't find a link?! Any assistance is much appreciated! Thanks ❤
I think they’re not broadcast the semi finals today sadly! Nothing online at all about it.
Can you mullet the orbea?
I have
@@hardtennis the new one?
The MGU is the future hands down. It just makes sense. E-Bikes are heavy and powerful. Normal cassettes are light, fragile and expensive, not fit for purpose. The added cost of an MGU setup is worth the money long term for sure.
Is it me of does he sound exactly like Jonny Smith from the Late Brake Show?
An Orbea with Dual Crown and no Battery or Motor?.....How in the hell do they run/mount the cranks?
To bad Pole went bankrupt. Those bikes would be perfect for the Pinion MGU system
Recommendation for these long form videos.
More UA-camrs are doing long form of 1-3 hours in length. I hope it’s successful for you, but I’m one viewer (and I’m sure there are many like me) who don’t have time to sit down for the next one hour and 38 minutes to dedicate my time to watching your entire video.
With that, include more chapters so viewers can skip forward to the content they are specifically interested in listening to.
Do your thing brother. Love your channel. It’s been one of my favorite mtb channels on UA-cam, but these long form videos interest me much less than your short form.
The way you’ll be able to capture my time is by giving me the option to skip the content I’m not interested in watching, so I can go to a chapter of content I am interested in watching for 5, or 10, or 15 minutes.
Cheers
thanks for feedback - timestamps added.
Orbea has the worse customer service for North American customers. Be aware because warranty claims for the most basic issues take months . They are not consistent with any of her messaging . They will not honour warranty claims despite arguments and debates between them and the bike shops. It’s too bad because the bike itself was the best riding bike I have ridden.
There’s also the issue with being able to repair Shimano motors once the warranty expires. Most motor centres won’t touch them.

❗ Regalame una bicicleta 🚲 por favor 🙏🏻
Pinion motor/ gearbox is totally unproven and clunky and noisy at present. The Rohloff hub is totally proven on Emtbs. I'm over the vulnerability and constant fiddling with derailleurs That's why the Nicolai Eboxx GT1 MR14 manual change Rohloff belt drive is the duck's guts of Emtbs...E=Mtb²
The gearbox itself is proven. Just not the integration with a motor.
It's a first commercial test/production. We will see how it evolves.
we don't need gearbox's we just need CVT's, i suspect the pinion gearbox is going to be noisy and inefficient.
This Weight obsession is pointless on Emtbs. Yes it's relevant to mtbs. . Really experienced Emtb riders like you end up riding a full power long ,raked out heavier bike with Fox 38's for Stability ,comfort and pure Fun Fun Fun. Rob you looked slightly uncomfortable and nervous riding a light bike. ROB I think you prefer a bit of weight and long geometry like me. E=Mtb²
Try a Nicolai Eboxx GT1 MR14 manual change Rohloff belt drive with front mounted tucked in tensioner . Very very nice. E=Mtb²
I respectfully disagree about the weight issue. For me it is an issue. I love the weight of my analog 15.8 kg Transition Sentinel, and despise the weight of my 23.6 kg Specialized Levo.
The Levo feels like a lorry. The Sentinel feels like a Ferrari. The weight of mid powered e-bikes is very enticing to me. They are more playful and more maneuverable.
If someone can make a full powered ebike with a 700 Wh battery at 18 kg, I may never ride my Sentinel again.
A lot depends on rider size and weight. I'm 5 '6" (167cm)nd 66kg. I don't like the heavier full fat ebikes simply because they are more hassle to ride in technical, twisty trails. They maybe be fine on more open trails or longer rides, but they are not for me. Also if a rider uses sensible power management they can gain extra mileage.
@@JohnBreezy22 Yes I think it depends if you want flickability or stability. I agree the" feel" of my Trek EXe is initially nice but in the long run it knocks me around a lot more on long 30min rocky decents as I am nearly back to my birth weight at 63kg. Lighter bikes don't push through rock gardens as well for me , have limited range and slower Up and downhill for where and how I ride. If flickability is important to you then Lighter is better. E=Mtb²
This constant reference to commuting with an ebike is in stark contrast to the mountain bikes you keep promoting. None of which have been designed for commuting, just bike parks and actual mountain trail use. Hardly anybody is going to find a rampage line on the way to work in an urban environment. There are a lot of commuting SUV ebikes with an MGU you don't cover them. Funny you moan about all those companies going out of business but the ones surviving are offering SUV's, it is you who is stuck in the past.
