Having Faith in the Process Renovating Our Tiny Stone Home

  • Our tiny stone house renovation is due a serious glow-up but we’re having doubts & need to have faith in the process! Head to squarespace.co... to save 10% off your first purchase of a website or domain using code LIFEBYLIVING
It’s October 🍁 & the cooler autumn days mean we can continue the transformation of our quaint little cottage with traditional lime pointing techniques but using a modern pre-mixed lime mixture. This is going to be a labour of love but it's sooo worth it & will elevate our formerly forgotten ruin of a building into a small (but perfectly formed) charming country home that is built to last! It's a nerve racking process as we won't know the finished colour of the lime mix for another couple of weeks...we just have to have faith in the process!
Unfortunately, I (Victoria) took a fall & injured my ankle, so Ricky’s picking up the slack on the project (like a champ 💪) & pushing our home renovation forward so we stay on track & don’t fall behind schedule!
LIKE THIS VIDEO if you enjoyed it & SUBSCRIBE to follow our journey as we document our life here in Portugal & the many DIY projects that we'll be tackling including renovating a tiny stone home, setting up systems to grow some of our own food & finally restoring the 100+ year old farm house.
Also say hi in the comments! We'd love to hear from you 😊
    Ricky & Victoria x
    -------------
We're Ricky & Victoria 👋 We're slowly bringing an abandoned off grid Portuguese farm back to life & transforming it into a beautiful homestead for us & our two rescue dogs Teddy & Poppy.
We both agree that we’re not experts in anything that we do here, however we don’t let that stop us from giving it a try. We live our life by trying. We live our life by doing. We live our LIFE BY LIVING.

Vicky should put her ankle into the cold pool for as long as she can stick it. Then get it out and let it soak up the heat from the sun before putting it back into cold water. Helps recovery and pull bruising out. A man of experience talking after endless ankle problems from playing football in my younger days.

Regarding the rain gutters - you've put so much work into bringing this little house from drab to fab. You've used stones and bricks and you've built these stunning shutters from wood (with metal hinges), all honest material - why would you add PLASTIC gutters? I'm thinking of metal rain gutters either from galvanised steel or painted black or sage green as the shutters are...

Victoria, be wise with keeping your ankle elevated whenever possible, and let it heal; you'll need to be careful with it for a few months - I know you don't want to hear that, but your body is your most important tool and ally, so listen to it when it tells you it needs rest. I dislocated an ankle (as in, sole beside ankle) on a hike on an uninhabited island once... it took over a year to recover...!

Very therapeutic I think, one bit of advice on your downpipes, be sure to get the fitting the correct way around, I have seen many people fit them wrong (so say professionals) and getting them wrong means in heavy rain they will spill out over the outside of the downpipe. I think the pointing will transform the building and you are both doing a brilliant job.....how great will it be to look back on the building every single day once completed and see your brilliant work.

Hey Victoria, if you haven't done so already, I'd have a GP or a physio look at that ankle. Pops are not good and you might have torn a ligament. Ice isn't going to fix that, though it will help with the swelling and any discomfort. Ya might need a CAM boot or at least some kind of compression sleeve. I'd also offload it a bit with crutches unless you can put weight on it without too much pain. Work on active range of motion with gentle ankle pumps. Best of luck!!

Vicky I recognized Clodhoppers right away. My mother's family Irish/Scottish decent used the word clodhoppers many a time. So I am with you on that word and it's FOR SURE REAL.

TIP: for MOLD removal, after pressure washing, with a soap to remove soil/dirt/dust residue, spray vinegar on surface, let dry, spray with hydrogen peroxide.

For the annoying mosquitoes: Mix in a 6 or 8 oz bottle: half water and half vanilla extract or half water and half lemon juice it really keeps them off of you. Also for your ankle Vicky: Rub Castor Oil on your foot and wear warm socks over nite for a few nights. Also for the swelling and or pain Lavendar oil also works overnite with warm socks. Turmeric in pill form will also help with the swelling/ inflammation. Hope this finds you well. Feel better soon! Love the videos and sense of humor. Salutations from U.S.

Pointing looks great folks. Sorry you’re injured Victoria, please don’t overdo things as you could quite easily re-injure that area, it can take weeks without the disciplined rest that you need to recover.

Believe in the process. Give it some time, several weeks. At least the grout fill will be the same color. Once the walls are done, good insulation factor.

    Great video !
Your pointing really looks good !
Resting/soaking your foot in the cold pool should very much help the swelling and healing - all the best !
    Thank you for sharing 👏😀❤️

Wow! So far the rendering looks great. After brushing it really makes the wall look finished. On camera the current colour looks like its a good match with the brick as well. Great Job!
