    Elephant seal female predated by killer whales off the coast of Sea Lion Island (Falkland Islands). Observing killer whales from the air (drone) gives an invaluable perspective on their behavior, which is very difficult to appreciate from shore or even from a boat. Here Puma's pod (a well known orcas pod in the Falklands) got a female elephant seal that was probably coming back to shore for her moulting period. Surely a very good meal. Interesting to see the newborn (called Pepper), only a few weeks old, actively participating to the feast ! And a very bloody end, it is incredible how bright red is elephant seal blood !
    In this occasion our drone (DJI Mavic Pro Platinum) gave its best at filming this incredible event just before...going for a swim in the ocean :-( Sigh sigh sigh...it gave us a remote controller error, lost connection with the app (meaning we couldn't see exactly where it was) and finally started descending too quick until...puff, a big dive ! This is the reason for the low resolution in the video, it is the one streamed live on the connected tablet !

      Yes its pretty interesting. But its also no just a regular seal either. Its an elephant seal. They are pretty damn big. Alot of them get to be the size of an automobile, and weigh as much as one too. Thats one was obvious not that big, but she definitely had a couple hundred pounds on her. As the commenter before me mentioned..she bled out about as much as a human. Could u imagine one of the massive 15-20 foot long 2000 pound males getting ripped open?!

      @@robtangent4664 by that logic, then you should consider how the family of the fish the seal eats feels about it, or how the abandoned elephant seal pups (either abandoned for unknown reasons, something their mother senses is wrong with it,mother not having enough milk to sustain nursing, or become prey while out feeding on fish to produce enough milk) desperate for milk turn to other nursing elephant seal mothers for nourishment and life only to be rejected and chased off at best, and viciously attacked or even killed at worst-how they feel when they turn to their own kind, starving and desperate for life saving sustenance to no avail and at major risk of being killed, but most certainly destined to starve if they don’t try. This is nature and how these animals fuel their bodies with the specific nutrients needed to survive that lead them to prey specific to their nutritional needs. They don’t have the luxury of a grocery store or plant based shakes full of protein powder, supplements and the large quantities of healthy fats they would get from seals that is needed to survive in frigid waters. Honestly, the people in comments under animal documentaries showing animals hunting tactics and behaviors needed to survive crying over the prey and condemning the predator while ignoring the fact that the prey are often also predators that hunt and kill and eat smaller animals. At least Orcas stay with their children and family pods for life, looking out for each other, but ting and sharing with each other, teaching each other, and don’t abandon their young at birth, before nursing is supposed to end or even at 2 -4 weeks when nursing is supposed to end, but then they are left to fend for themselves and hope they can hack it alone like seals do with their young. Honestly, you are watching the wrong video content if you are concerned about how the seal’s family feels about it being eaten by orcas….I’ll tell you how they feel…..they don’t feel because they don’t stay together with their families-never meet their fathers or siblings and are left at a few weeks old by their mothers, so pretty sure the female seal’s family gives zero fucks and won’t even know anything happened because they are solitary animals except when mating, birthing and a few weeks of nursing. The orcas on the other hand would devastated at the loss of one of their young as they are together for life.

      @ElephantSealResearchGroup  2 роки тому +25

      It is surely true that they use these opportunities to teach their youngs, but in this specific case the prey is anyway quite big (adult female elephant seal), so killer whales might want to make her more tired/inoffensive before actually trying to kill her. Bites from a 800 kilos seal could be dangerous even for a orca.

I think what we saw here was the orcas first tiring out the prey before eating it at their leisure. obviously they could just attack it, the seal would have been easily overwhelmed. but there’s sport and practice opportunities there as well. I see what I might imagine was socialising behaviour: establishing strength, pushing through lesser males to have a push at the prey, trying their technique to submerge and drown. and then there’s the feast, once everybody has had their turn and the animal clearly dead, an easy meal.

      I’m speculating, and my physiology knowledge is human based so I could be wrong: the constant ramming of the elephant seal by the whales would cause enormous internal injuries. That blood is absolutely arterial blood based on how vibrant it is. However, elephant seal blubber can be 6 inches thick so I suspect that the aorta had dissected within the body cavity as a result of the physical trauma and 2:52 is simply where the whales first pierce through the blubber of the seals torso, releasing the build up of internal bleeding

    I always remember a dream I had as a kid that I was floating in the ocean and I would go under water and look down into the darkness and see a killer whale coming up from the darkness about to attack me, just before it grabbed me another one would come from above and take me instead, I’d wake up as soon as it grabbed me.
