I have a ton of old cookbooks that Momma kept. They did some odd stuff to jjello in the early days, lol ! I prefer the lime jello, crushed/ drained pineapple, cottage cheese and fold in Cool Whip.
I was waiting for your face on this one when I saw onions and Jell-O 😂😂😂. That look on your face was one of real surprise and indicated “It’s surprisingly not nasty” 😂😂😂
I am totally taken back, in every aspect of time, you have totally captured the decade in absolute excellence!!!!!! What a breath of freshness, class, elegance, style you have exemplified, look at you!!!!!!! You are representing my era all so well, you look absolutely, epeccably stunning!!!!!!
Onions. In Jell-O. The marketing department at Jell-O in the 1950s were bold. Or if Mad Men is accurate, constantly wasted 😂 Congrats on surviving the salad section 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 And that apron is amazing 💚
I’m convinced women came up with these recipes to mess with their husbands 😂. There were ads where the woman got spanked for not doing chores 😩..maybe they got a kick out of watching their husbands choke down a tuna jello salad and some mayo and pineapple for dessert 😂
100%, they were usually at least PARTIALLY gone but don't let that trick u into thinking that the WIVES weren't! Wives were KNOWN to be "medicated" and I believe they let it make its own impression on their food choices as well😂😂😂
Gelatine was made widely available in the 1890s. During WW2 and the great depression it was cheap and easy to get, as it wasn't rationed, which led to the rise of Jello dishes (esp after lime jello was released). In the 1950s it was a kind of status symbol for housewives to show off that they not only had the time to make Jello dishes, their husbands also had jobs that paid well enough to afford a refrigerator.
The history of these salads is actually fascinating! They come from very labour intensive aspics that can be nice. Then this became a cheap industrial alternative, and they took it a bit far, There's several articles online if you search for the history, and it's worth the read.
This is why I love mid century appliances and design. Not only were things designed to function smoothly, they were also engineered to last. I still have my grandma's scale and office hole-puncher from the 40's, and they work better than ANY newer products. Despite getting kicked around for the last 80 years or so. Just like that Duracel bettery slogan: "Takes a Lickin and Keeps on Tickin." That's a slogan from back in the post industrial boom during the race to space era, when everything was built to last through hell and highwater. When I was younger, I didn't like grandma's hole puncher because it was "old" and big and clunky. It was made of solid metal and weighed at about 20 lbs! But that's precisely what makes it so good! I can't tell you how many new digital scales and plastic hole punchers I've had that have bit the dust within the first year. I finally copped on to the fact that grandma's appliances and tools were the best ever made. All it took was a little WD40, and that hole puncher was back in business. It is industrial strength! It can punch about 20 sheets of paper all at once as many times in a row as you need it to. Just pull the lever and SWOOSH! Like a little chopping block! None of the screws have ever come loose. It's just simple, clean, strong, and effective. Same with all tools and appliances from back then. I wish I'd saved gramdma's stove, washer/dryer, car... everything!! Those things were built like tanks and finely crafted! I miss analog technologies.
As children of the 60s, my siblings and I became experts at avoiding Jello “salads.” They seemed to show up in multiple versions at every pot luck, picnic or family dinner. It took a certain amount of strategy to avoid eating the nasty things. We’re in our senior years now, and not one of us has ever made one. That dress, however, is an absolutely charming revival. It looks beautiful on you, and I simply love the fabric.
@@baddie1shoe Luckily I was never in a position to be subjected to such a revolting thing (wouldn't call it food or dessert); gelatin (jello) is absolutely revolting. The way it jiggles is extremely disturbing and revolting as well. It should be banned in food products, quite frankly.
I like making Jello fluff which is jello, whipped cream and cottage cheese mixed together. I use an electric mixer to blend it all together and it tastes great. It’s better than the weird eldritch abomination with hotdogs and olives in it.
I'd like to see the kid's reaction to the jello salad. I'm glad the UA-camr gave it an applause. Another UA-camr that I watch does food reviews, DJClive.
First I'd like to say how much I enjoy your videos. My husband and I just bought a 1950s house in it's original condition (it's why I bought it). We've been having fun finding more 50s and 60s furniture for all of the rooms. It has the built in stove and oven (2 pieces) and it's so convenient having the oven higher up. I enjoy making some of the foods they're in the 50s but jello salads aren't on that list. I do however enjoy making new recipes for jello shots. 😊❤
I mean, this is one of the few that makes sense! Cucumber tastes delicious cold and it already has a slightly questionable texture depending on who you ask. So turning it into a cool wiggly gelatin dish doesn't sound too out of pocket!

Im indian and we make a sambal with cucumber, onion, vinegar, and some apricot jam for sweetness. Mayybe it will taste something like that, but that jelly ratio makes me think it will be way too sweet and with the added gelatine texture - I'd probably pass on this one.
The one my Mema always made was Sunshine Salad. Orange jello, shredded carrots, and pineapple. Weird combination but surprisingly it worked. I crave it now and again 😂
You're always so beautiful. I love how dainty, and refined you were, even when trying something you were pretty sure that you might hate. I could see the nervousness in your face, but you still remained refined. And that apron, absolutely adorable.
I love vintage cook books, and this Jello salad actually looks appetizing compared to some of the ones I've seen recipes for. Your kitchen and outfit are adorable.
Brave, brave woman. 😂
Brave indeed. I'd probably make this for my little brother if he keeps busting into my house like he pay bills☺️

My grandma used to make this jello. I couldn't with the celery. I tried it once, gagged on it and was done!
I have a ton of old cookbooks that Momma kept. They did some odd stuff to jjello in the early days, lol ! I prefer the lime jello, crushed/ drained pineapple, cottage cheese and fold in Cool Whip.
Why was a lot of 50s food so dang weird
I think after the depression they wanted to go ALLLLLL out w their food presentations and weird combos LOL. My theory but probably something else
It was all about using what they had available. Of course they got a little bit... too creative.
