Summer Rain - Johnny Rivers 1967

- Опубліковано 15 тра 2016
- "Summer Rain", by Johnny Rivers, was released in 1967 and reached the #14 spot on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, #10 on the U.S. Cash Box Top 100, and #10 in Canada in early 1968. It also became his 8th international hit. The song was written by songwriter James Hendricks. The lyrics reflect on a previous summer of casual love and references The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album, and the Rascals' song "Groovin'. Born in New York City, his family moved to Baton Rouge, Louisiana where he began his career at an early age and was influenced by the distinctive Louisiana musical style. Later, he adopted the stage name "Rivers" based on the Mississippi River. He was one of the few performers to weather the British music invasion during the 60's by making subtle changes in his his music direction by recording ballads that mixed his soulful voice with smooth-sounding backing vocalists. Not only a singer/songwriter, Rivers also started his own record production company, Soul City Records. Though he has won two Grammy Awards, Rivers has yet to be inducted into the R&R Hall Fame as of 2019.

Old,guys like me!! Weekends drinking & remembering the good times!!
Taylor Swift and Dolly Parton are in the R&R Hall of fame and Johnny Rivers is not. What an injustice. Johnny made music history. He will never be forgotten.
clearly shows the character of H of F === massive Hall of Farce !!!
Seriously Taylor swift?
Still listening to this song & loving his voice in 2024 ❤

It is a rainy morning in 2023 and this song still hits the heart and rings the living bell. Loved it as a kid and still gives an old man a hopeful smile.

Johnny Rivers should be in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame
I’m 80 and loved it then and love it now!
It is May 2024 as I hear an early morning rain outside my window in Northern CA. My mind naturally went to this song. My mind went to a time and space I remember well with fondness. Thank you Johnny for capturing gentleness in the simple pleasures of life.
May 2024 and it's raining here in Newcastle, NSW, Australia. Great song
Nicely stated! I was b. 1966 in Melbourne (Australia). I think Johnny Rivers captured the times. Love the start to this song, perfect pop winner.
I love all Johnny Rivers songs but this is my all time favorite ❤️.i am 67 and I still listen to all his songs
The memories this song brings to mind! The beach, and the music will never be again--never!
I loved Johnny Rivers in the 60s. I wore out his records. He had some really great hits back then. I have always thought he was underrated.
In 1967 my beautiful 17 year old fiance loved this slow dance tune. And we still do today.
In 73, I lesson to this though my meditations and spiritual growth and I just want to say Johnny Rivers, thank you.
I’m 25 and love this! Amazing era in music and Rivers had a great voice.
Beautiful song. Reminds me of memories back in the day. ❤️
One of my top 5 favourite all time songs....Poetry in Music!❤❤❤❤
I don't understand why Johnny Rivers is not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame....he had so many great hits....this is one of his finest, always LOVED IT 💜💜💜
Thanks for posting Johnny's best song, Summer Rain.
Johnny,Be The Best.
This the Greatest pure Talent of the 60s.🤩
I can envision visiting my family in Atlanta when the song was new. Everywhere I went I would hear the song and I can see their faces used to make me sad. Now it makes me happy that I had them and one day I'll see them again😊
One of my dad's favorite song he passed away in 2015 still got the 45
My mama loved this mans music so much. We grew up listening to him, and now all six of her kids love Johnny Rivers.
Thanks for sharing.
I love that... Pass it on🎶
This is a song that when it comes on the radio.....ya gotta CRANK IT!!! Love it! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
He's an underappreciated musician. Gorgeous voice.
That's what I realized in 1969 when I saw him live with nothing but an acoustic guitar!
I was driving to work today and skipped to a station playing this. Haven't heard it since I was a kid and my parents used to play oldies in the car. I was still able to sing along with it
February 11, 2024 I feel like listening to music today and this is one I use to listen to a lot
I am feeling somewhat low today. I always liked this song. 😂🐾
Smile for the good times🕊
RIVERS IS SO UNDERRATED AS A SINGER, PERFORMER, AND A MUSICIAN!
Fully agree to have been a teenager in the sixties was the luck of the draw would not change it for anything if it were possible. The magic of the music and so talented were the artist proven by the revival of the music today. I to feel he was the best as this is my all time best song. Cheers to you a man of great taste.
Not as far as I'm concerned. I think hes amazing. This is my favorite song of his, I think
Not by me.
John Hardesty you are right, His music , was part of our lives, as we were growing up ! ♥️
Well, since the mid 1970s I became a really big fan of his music and will remain so. He was a fantastic singer. okay performer and an excellent musician. He's a 20th Century master that's a fact.
I listen to it any time I can, from my music collection as one of sweetest songs from back then,up to present time love songs. His voice was perfect in lyrics.
A National treasure. Johnny Rivers.
ALWAYS loved Johnny Rivers. Soundtrack to my youth. "Mission: Impossible" had its theme, but the James Bond series had undistinguished music in its opening...but Johnny Rivers' "Secret Agent Man" TOTALLY captured the whole thing. Just Great!
"Poor Side of Town", "Slow Dancin'" and soe many more. Just a great voice and style!!
Still listening 2023 ❤️
Johnny Rivers - Legend ! One of the greatest songs of the 60's and beyond !
I remember riding around in 1973 in my 68 Camaro with this playing on the 8 track. Those Craig speakers were sounding so good. The little blonde riding with her head on my shoulder. Those summer rain nights will forever be remembered.
I had a summer like that in 1992, with a beautiful redhead, who I later got married to. Aah, beautiful memories!
that 68 would be worth some $$$ now ..I was only 8 in 1973 lol... my first car was a 72 nova ss
Yup...we're all stuck here in 2018 now. That little blonde may initiate a lawsuit for sexual misconduct and you'll get a right on red light ticket.
This guy is so underat6
Hope you still know her my boy...
Omg, I found it!!! This song has been in my head for years. I did not know a lot of the words or who sung it but the melody kept playing in my head. I have been searching for years. I knew it had to be in the late 60's but since I did not know the words or the artist, google couldn't even help. Yay!!!
One of my all time favorites. Still got the 45 of it from 1967.
Treasure that beauty.
love and light The song mentions Sgt Peppers Lonely Heart Band, but didn't that Beatles album not come out in 1968 and the song mentions the song in 1967? Was he taking about the song a year before it came out?
William Eddy Sgt Pepper was released in June 1967. Google it.
@@brianherrington7226 One thing though.......he took artistic license with the lyric saying Sgt. Pepper was playing on the jukebox..no singles from the album........ not sure if jukes played albums at that time........
eternal Unique Unbridled Brilliance of JR !!!
I cannot believe it's been 50 years since I first fell in love with this great song - and it's still great!
Thanks for the great comment.
Folks it doesn't get any better than this. Johnny at his best. The Wrecking Crew backing him with the great Hal Blaine on drums, Joe Osborn, Larry K., and several other great session musicians. Marty Paitch arrangements, Lou Adler, James Burton, and the list goes on. This came out on a single in late 1967. Song written by James "Jim" Hendricks - Nashville gospel singer-songwriter. IF THIS WAS RELEASED TODAY 3-3-2017 IT WOULD BE AT HIT. Gosh, I went into the USAF 49 years ago today -- brings back GREAT memories. This song was BIG in VIETNAM ................................ Roger C.
Yes. INCREDIBLE everything. And you are right: It DOES not get any better than this. Try it with headphones ...
Roger, firstly let me say, good to have you home. Secondly, you are SO RIGHT about this record. We did have some great music, didn't we?
surferpam1 Thank you for your kinds words. God Bless, Roger C.
surferpam1 Thank you for your kind words. This song, on a TEAC tape recorder as
I sat on the helicopter in Vietnam with our door gunner - it was just good for the

SUMMER 1967 MY FIRST LOVES FAVOURITE SONG ..CHRIS I NEVER FORGET I NEVER STOPPED LOVING YOU I NEVER WILL RIP MY LOVE TILL WE MEET AGAIN
Just needed to hear this today, johnny Rivers was everything we needed back then, good music fed our souls. 😎✌️🎶🎶
Johnny Rivers recorded an album singing Beatles tunes. I liked it. 👍
Johnny Rivers can sing anything!
I loved this song, in my early teans jn New Zealand. I certainly fooled around and fell in and ouf of love! As teenagers did and still do. Great song. ❤❤❤❤
Listening in 2023! Completely changed my life. An absolute banger. This song couldn't begin to compare to the literal vomit that spews from the radio today. I want this song played at my birth, death, graduation, wedding, and every birth of my children.
- literal vomit" --- well said, perhaps you are being too kind !!!
I'm listening on the night 🌉 before Halloween 🎃! 2023! Where does the time go? I'm a teen now, and if the world still exists in the future, let's say 20 yrs later, I will be listening to this song in my 30's! Life is such a mind blowing concept! Goodbye whoever you all are! And have a good one!
Love this song n singer😍😍👏👏👏😳
This was October, November 1967. Sgt Peppers was still ruling the radio, with a ton of other great songs. But then this song tied it all together nicely with its psychedelic wrinkles. Thank ____ I was there!!!
A great time for music.
It was about the Summer of Love so it makes sense. Great time for music. Wish I was alive then.
I want to live the life depicted in this song.
Thanks for the comment.
Yeah dude, he's living the 60's dream
Only a fool wouldn't.
So would i.now more than ever 👍
@@60s70sTheBest have you seen Jose feliciano play Purple Haze 👈man oh man he literally tore it up at a concert in Chile years ago. I've been a fan of his for years n never knew he could play like that 👏👏👏
the man can flat out play a guitar and he has a perfect singing voice
GREAT HARMONY, GREAT INSTRUMENTATION.
What a great song! So mellow it takes my breath away........
Thank you for your comment.
My pleasure!
A real quintessential song that typifies the sixties! When I listen to this I go into deep thought and reflection.
Just saw him play at the Golden Nuget in Vegas. Still AWSOME.
Johnny Rivers was so unique and different from the other artists at this time. He was basically playing at the same venues as the DOORS in LA at the same time but was completely different. Truly a great artist that left an indelible mark in my reflections of my youth. And totally deserves to be in the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame.
I read recently where someone jokingly said he won't make it into the Hall of Fame because he's got the Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu. All kidding aside though, it's a matter of overcoming the politics in order to get in.
@@60s70sTheBest many great artists & bands that rock are missing but Madonna is somehow in. I can’t say I appreciate such ”hall of fame” that willingly include people who aren’t nowhere near rock ’n’ roll
Yes he belongs in RR Hall of Fame
God do I just love this song
Thanks for the comment.
One of the best songs ever made
This is such a beautiful song - always love hearing it.
Hey 2022! One of my favs growing up!!
Johnny should be in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame.
This song is amazing. I’d forgotten what a great vocalist and guitarist Johnny Rivers is. In Summer Rain he refers to The Beatles and a growing awareness of what he had to do to keep relevant.
Thank you for your comment.
music was really an embarassment of riches back than😛💝
I think he was stating the obvious in a folk song sort of way. Cause everybody was playing Sargent Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band 24/7.
I wish the song had more lyrics
Johnny rivers is the best true living legend
I am SO jealous of my parents (dad born in '58, mom born in '62). They grew up with all of this AMAZING music! I didn't come along until '86. Phooey! Haha!
Nothing says a millennial shouldn't enjoy the music of the past, especially the songs their parents liked. It's also worth understanding how rock and roll came to be.
True... and I noticed this version of the song doesn't have the sound of the thundershower in the intro and is a little more extended towards the end.
Born in 1965, I grew up with Ramones, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, Blondie, Bryan Ferry with Roxy Music & David Bowie to mention a few......In the 1960's it was called Psychedelic, The 1970's termed it Punk, In the 1980's it was labeled New Wave, by the 1990's it became Modern Rock & by early 2000's it shifted to Alternative Rock. Long Live Alternative Rock!
Jered Fuller I'm 60 and because of artist like him and groups like the grass root, I became a professional Drummer/ Singer
born in 2000 :-(
Beautiful English, beautiful poetry, a song that tells a story. How times have changed.
.
Great comment. Thank you.
This has always been one of my favorite songs. Now that I am a lot older, it stirs up such good memories from my youth.
Amen to that .. I'm 71 years old ................
Yep, I'm 45. I heard it growing up. Sad that the only real song he's known for is "secret agent man".
There's something about his voice---so perfect, sexy, soulful.
I was 8 years old when this song was released and to this very day I cannot get enough of it. I personally nominate Johnny Rivers into the R&RHOF. I so wish I were the golden haired love...
so handsome!!! and i love your voice!!!
Was just reminded of this great old song🧡
Gorgeous eyes!
Everything just works out right on this damn song.
I was in my early teens when this came out. Fond memories.
One o my favorites. My first job , renting umbrellas on fort lauderdale public beach!
My girlfriends name is SummerRain, named after THIS song and both equally beautiful!!
David now that is "cool" your girlfriends' name is SummerRain. This came out after I graduated in 1967 from High School. When I was in Vietnam 17 Feb 1970-16 Feb 1971 this song was very, very popular. One of my Helicopter buddies and our Door Gunner had this on their TEAC Reel-To-Reel tape deck in the Helicopter they'd pick us up on. Glad almost 50 years later I am alive and can write this. Thanks to God for getting me back to the USA safe and sound. Roger C.
Roger C God bless you.
That’s my name too
@@juvenilehall1979 You wrote this over 2 years ago but I hope you’re still here & I want to tell you how much what you wrote touched my Heart!
Thank you for your service and WELCOME HOME!! ❤️
God a Bless you and yours more and more!
@@SummerRain368 .. Thank you for your kind remarks .... also, glad to serve in the USAF and in Vietnam ... God Bless You .. RDC
Anyone notice that the first time thru, "let tomorrow be" seems to mean 'leave it alone, don't worry about it'. whereas, the second time thru, at the end, it seems to mean 'let it come-we're ready for it.'? Just the musings of an old man...
Listen to You tube several times a week country, rock ,soul , gospel always come back Listen to Johnny Rivers never gets old fan for life
Thanks for the comment.
This kind of music is one of the reasons we all love summer and can recall our summer relationships that were oh so sweet....great tune!

They play this song now quite often on Sirius SXM 60s ch73. Great song. Johnny has a unique voice that captures the listener. My mom used to play it a lot. Enjoy the moment.
