Saw him live in 1976 or 77 at an outdoor show. Johny was leading up to Jefferson Starship and he stole the show. I will never forget the crowd roaring when he played Secret Agent Man. Jefferson Starship watched his performance on that hot summer day. What a great memory
Do you remember where that was? I saw him too, in Houston, TX, outdoors. I started hearing SAM, did a double take, and a flush of childhood memories washed over me. I was astounded that someone like him was playing to a very small crowd.
Oh wow Melanie! How about that! I was in Mrs. Bretherick's third grade class at Delcroft Elementary School in Folcroft, PA (near Philadelphia) back in 1965-66. It was also the year that I became a Green Acres fan as well.
This sounds like a lip synched production, so he probably mimed the guitar. It doesn't mean he didn't play the guitar on the studio version. He did, and is a good guitarist.
Hometown boy, but I was born the year this song came out. Heard stories from co-workers who used to go see him perform in Baton Rouge when they were teens. ❤ Love his music!
This was my first ever 45….Back in those days in southern California school buses played songs from the radio and I knew I had to buy it. Nancy Sinatra’s These Boots Are Made for Walking was also another favorite. Good times.

Johnny Rivers should have been in the Rock Roll Hall of Fame years ago. Imagine Isaac Hayes with one hit being in the Hall compared to Johnny with at least 30 Top 40 songs. Rock and Roll Hall of fame is a joke and fake. Rivers is an amazing talent, with a great voice. Legend, pioneer, he is Rock and Roll.
I'm not in any form a fan of the sex pistols but i was very pleased when Johnny Rotten told these guys to F-off and described it as a piss stain in the history of rock and roll
I was 6 in 1966, AM radio, standing on the front seat while my mom drove, singing along, I absolutely loved this song. Thank you, I'd forgotten so many songs like this one.
The thing that puts this song over the top is Johnny's guitar playing as he could definitely play some tasty riffs when necessary. Johnny was the first act to open LA's famous Whisky-A-Go-Go in Jan 1964 and made a Live album called At The Whisky-A-Go-Go released the following month. One of the cuts off of it - Memphis reached #2 on the pop charts during the summer of 1964 and in the ensuing 3 years River's had 12 other top 40 hits including this one, and 4 more during the 70's. Certainly qualifies for the RRHOF in my book.
+mrbag60 EVERYBODY Reading this should read what you just wrote! Also, we just lost P.F. Sloan today (11/15/15) one of the UNSUNG GENIUS's of 1960's pop and beyond who wrote this tune in addition to many many other Great Tunes including Eve of Destruction by Barry McGuire, You Baby by the Turtles and so much more. R.I.P. P.F. Sloan
+mrbag60 Secret Agent Man a P.F. Sloan composition was the 2nd best chart position of a song he penned, reaching #3 on the Billboard charts. His best was Barry McGuire's Eve of Destruction which topped the Billboard charts in Sept 1965. To Sloan's credit both songs were penned before he was 21, and in all 8 of his songs made top 40 status between 1965-1967. Sloan's cause of death was Pancreatic Cancer, one of the deadliest cancers which my grandfather died from in a matter of months back in 1979. P.F. Sloan was 70. Thanks for the heads up MusicMC1.

I would love the song, if only it weren't for all those stupid assholes making noises in the background. He's trying to record a song! Shut up!

Oh, I can believe it...without a DOUBT!
@tuberhubris4154 Casper Wyoming at the Fairgrounds on a weekend afternoon. Of course, it was summertime.
I've seen him 4 times in the last 6 years and he still puts on a great show and his voice is just as clear as ever.

Oh wow Melanie! How about that! I was in Mrs. Bretherick's third grade class at Delcroft Elementary School in Folcroft, PA (near Philadelphia) back in 1965-66. It was also the year that I became a Green Acres fan as well.
I'm 62 years old and I always listened to Johnny rivers I love his voice I had a special CD with only his greatest hits 😊
"The odds are you won't live to see tomorrow"... okay, that's pretty cool.
This is the kind of song your dad plays but you actually like.

Johnny Rivers is a really good rock guitarist.
@Undoctrinated - he was HUGE back in the day, pre-classic rock 60s, right as music was changing
@Undoctrinated AND HE CRIED ABOUT IT ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK
This sounds like a lip synched production, so he probably mimed the guitar. It doesn't mean he didn't play the guitar on the studio version. He did, and is a good guitarist.
Hometown boy, but I was born the year this song came out. Heard stories from co-workers who used to go see him perform in Baton Rouge when they were teens. ❤ Love his music!
This was my first ever 45….Back in those days in southern California school buses played songs from the radio and I knew I had to buy it. Nancy Sinatra’s These Boots Are Made for Walking was also another favorite. Good times.
In 1966 when this song came out I was 9 yo,I am now 65. Who would've known this song would still rock after all these years.
Let's not forget what a conversation piece it would be to this day.
🎶 Secret Asian man,

Didn't Johnny Rivers open up songs for movie themes. I may be wrong in this thought.
@@bettyh3747 probably. I was only 8 but secret agent movies was big at that time. CIA was only about 10 years old and Sean Connery was the coolest guy around.
He's a great guitar player.

So the secret agents, are now secret Asians? 😂
My guitar teacher showed this to us, and I'll never forget when he showed us this. I love it!
once you hear this song, you can never unhear it. It plays over and over in your head.
"A pretty face can hide an evil mind". Mix with alcohol, a winning combination.

This song is a bop and I’m not afraid to admit that that’s what led me here

Johnny Rivers should have been in the Rock Roll Hall of Fame years ago. Imagine Isaac Hayes with one hit being in the Hall compared to Johnny with at least 30 Top 40 songs. Rock and Roll Hall of fame is a joke and fake. Rivers is an amazing talent, with a great voice. Legend, pioneer, he is Rock and Roll.
agreed the so-called R&R Hall of Fame is a joke. It's more about "political correctness" to the creeps that nominate artists for their worthless BS.
@@carlomiller1984 Most of the artists in the Hall Of Fame don't even do Rock and Roll.
Johnny’s guitar solo is the best one of any AM radio pop song!
Come on now, how cool is this. I love that steely guitar sound.
I’m so glad this song was a part of my childhood.
What a great song . I dont why but it gets me a nostalgic feeling...
These oldies,never get old👍👍2019
Yes
+MusicMC1 sorry to hear that

Johnny Rivers,a great singer back in 1966,also year I was born.
As far as I'm concerned Johnny Rivers is an unsung hero, not only is he a great singer, he is one of the best guitarists of all time.

Great voice!😎
Frieda Ryan might be unsung, but god damn he can sing.
Johnny Rivers has that fantastic crossover voice and sound where he fits perfectly in country, soul, Pop/rock, or whatever,.Not even the Beatles could duplicate his repitituor , Robert at 66.
I remember when that came out ,it was way before its time,I had siblings from 2 to 11 years older than me so I heard all the best rock from early on ,love Johnny Rivers

I love Johnny Rivers, but this solo was played by Junior Brown. Check him out. Dubbed. Great music!
@@karlfisher1864 I like Junior Brown's version too, but it sounds completely different from this (at least in the Junior Brown Surf Medley video). Why do you think this version has Jr. B's solo dubbed over Johnny's original?

The studio guitarist who played the intro and solo is named Jim Mesi. I don't know if it's the greatest solo of all time, but it's a candidate.

One of the most under rated performers. I’ve seen Johnny 3 times over the years and he always put on a good show plus would come out and meet the fans after the show.
Such a catchy catchy song! One of the MANY reasons Johnny Rivers became legendary!
This was one of my first records by Johnny Rivers. I didn't know I liked best about the song growing up then, t he guitar or the drums, but I liked both. Johnny was a real good singer.
Still listening to Johnny on my mp3. So many great songs, including some Motown covers. Thanks for posting.

First lead lick and solo I ever learned all the way through way back when I first picked up guitar. I still jam it pretty frequently and I've since added my own flair to it. This track is a part of history, and well-deserved.
