The ECCI said the report, by the authoritative Transport Research Laboratory (TRL), showed there were clear trade-offs involved. It said: “Reducing urban speed limits has concomitant health, community and safety benefits, but is likely to raise greenhouse gas emissions..” The TRL report said cutting speeds below 40mph was likely to increase pollution, such as nitrogen oxides and particulates. Carbon dioxide emissions would also go up.
@@YtSuxballz So while impacts are less likely to be fatal, which would be a benefit, increasing particulates is going to be detrimental to peoples health. The raising greenhouse emissions is spurious at best.
Whats unacceptable is the fact that, as stated in the TFL press release (on their site), they have set a target of 1 million 20 MPH speeding offences per year. How can a public body justify having a target of number of fines and implement policy geared towards that?
Newport, which is fifth on the list, saw 187 crashes, 66 of which were serious or fatal. Sixty-two per cent of these were on roads with a 30mph speed limit. In Caerphilly, which is ninth on the list, there were 154 crashes
Hey BCG Good vid as ever. Well, im a van driver and go to London 3/4 days per week, so stand by for an essay 20 MPH limits are wrong, wrong wrong wrong! I like to observe speed limits at all times, even the 20 MPH on the Holloway road, the duel carriageway bit with the fence in the middle making it impossible to cross the road. The trouble is, when i do this, i often fine myself in a minority of 1, 27 cars behind me, and an open road in front of me. Heres my list of reasons why they're wrong. 1 They create a need for more signage, wasting recources 2 They encourage morons to walk in the road without fear 3 They create traffic by slowing everyone down and Disrupting traffic flow 4 They take drivers eyes off the road, we spend to much time checking, speed, signs, cameras all day long. 5 Cars with petrol/diesel engines were not designed to go that slowly for that long 6 Its very difficult speed to maintain, i end up doing 17/18 half the time, again, taking my eyes off the road 7 This is a bit of an obscure one, it can be hard to get past cyclists, ive had the the same cyclist over take me, then me over take him 10 times each till we finally go our own ways. The cyclist is probably thinking, i wish this law abiding idiot would just break the speed limit and XXXX off out of my way. The cyclist scenario is similar to what we see on a lot of motorways now. Example. The M6 is Staffordshire is now pretty much a 60 MPH zone. Lorry drivers hate it, cos they want BMW man and the like to speed up and get out of there way. When we all do 60 theres no break in the traffic. And finally 8 20 MPH zones would have been laughed at before the days of cameras, As you have said most people ignore them most of the time. But they can make big bucks for the local authorities. Essay over Hope you enjoyed it?
It’s a great point you make about cyclists and relative traffic on motorways as well. I never feel comfortable surrounded by cars on a motorway all doing the same speed, and I always prefer to speed up ans create a gap. And the cyclist thing is as pathetic as it is hilarious 🤣
1 The whole point is to make streets safer for people walking 2 The streets do not belong exclusively to motor vehicles 3 Driving slow does not cause anymore harm than driving fast (to the engine) 4 You don't have to be exactly at 20, you can go slower 5 Overtaking bikes in a dense city is useless, you will never be faster than them.
@@catlerbatty The streets are just as safe as they were with 30MPH. Just walk on the pavement. Driving slow does cause more harm, if it slows traffic, that means congestion, and more pollution. You wont solve a traffic problem by creating more of it. So don't overtake bikes? just sit behind them? i expect the cyclists will find that annoying.
@@catlerbatty nobody's talking about ridiculous speeding, but 30mph on empty roads is perfectly ok. A 20mph limit isn't going to stop the boy racers whatever the time.
@@michaelhuber6416 Yep, agree with you, I often see the remains of a hot hatch that has left a rural road having not quite made the bend and hit a tree! Quite a few floral tributes at the bottom of trees too! 🙄
@@catlerbatty surely this is a case for better training and potentially, changes to the driving test rather than a ridiculous blanket policy that causes severe frustration amongst more experienced drivers? It matters not anyway as speed limiters are now fitted to all new cars. Currently, the "feature" is redundant but can be invoked remotely and very easily. This is where we're heading 😔
As soon as you get in a car you are following rules which control your actions. So yes, car ownership is all about control. Equally, by making them more or less indispensable in people's minds, the government more or less ensures a continued high tax take from the mugs who fall for it.
Yes and the revenue it will bring of course shoplifters and burglars will be free to continue with little to deter them while the police will be dishing out tickets like confetti.
Living in Wales, this 20 mph thing will be a dangerous nightmare. Your video is car-centric, but consider (or interview) motorcyclists too. It is very difficult stabilizing a large and heavy motorcycle at 20 mph. 30 mph has been the speed limit for decades and was deemed safe. Holding a large motorcycle up at 20 mph it lacks the gyroscopic effects that keep it stable. Add to this speed ramps and the generally poor state of UK roads, then holding up a large motorbike is very difficult.... and that is even before you add the weight of the pillion. A completely stupid idea. My electric push bike does 30 mph easily; which is faster than my motorbike will be allowed do move
I am a motorcyclist and cant ride at 20mph comfortably, then you shouldn't be riding. It is literally a part of the test to ride at around a walking pace. The majority of the 1st test is done under 30 mph. Lots of people are capable of filtering between vehicles at that speed or slower even on a GS. This is a you problem.
totally agree with your point about making the 20 mph speed limit in use around schools, hospitals, and high streets, it makes sense. but to extend it to all side roads is utterly rediculous, and why does TFL have so much power over what we can and can't do?
@@hugodrax71 They did it on the A23 through Norbury SW16 and a neighbour said they were done for 22mph. The signs went up and next day police were stopping cars in zigzag lines of a crossing.

Let me solve this problem right away for you. You should simply stop accepting jobs in the city - they clearly frustrate you and you can totally survive without them.
This is purely a tactic to get people to give up on their cars, to basically annoy people and they are making a point to say cycling and walking can be quicker. This has little to do with safety. Another way to control our movements. I try and avoid 20mph roads where I can, just can’t handle going that slow. They can do whatever they like but we love our cars and driving, they can do one.
I live on a 20mph road - even the buses and police ignore the limit. It’s a Labour controlled borough and they’ve gone completely overboard with traffic restrictions.

Here they enforce speed limits by installing traject control in Belgium. driving is stressful as hell because the road signs in Belgium is confusing as hell. In a lot of cases you have no idea what speed you are allowed to drive and you missed a sign somewhere. During the day it is not that bad but when you drive in the winter and during the dark times, you sometimes missed a sign, but the traject control cameras have seen you and will fine you. You basically drive in constant fear of getting a fine. The state is terrorizing you to a point you don't want to leave your home anymore.
I disagree with the pollutiion arguement. At a lower speed, you've got to drive in a lower gear, but the engine revs will about be the same, so you're emitting the same pollutiuion for longer
The revs will be higher though especially if you stay in 1st or 2nd gear so you don't have to keep looking at your speedometer so you don't get a ticket for doing 24mph in 3rd gear.
@monsieurtechnical 20Mph limit should be as rare as Stop signs like they were before the 1990 when councils needed special permission after they tried engineering out the hazard. 30 MPH is a maximum not a target and there are many places it would be careless to do this e.g. I live on a narrow street with Victorian houses with cars parked on both sides & people crossing between cars it would be careless to do more than 15 mph on some parts of the road. The police should focus on careless driving but pointing a radar gun to people doing 24 mph & not not even stopping driver (but sending tickets in post) is easier so they miss the cloned number plate (were you guilty till proven innocent many just pay it & we now have terrorised people who's eye are now glued to their speedometer.
"Why do lower gears consume more fuel? The key is momentum. To get a 800 kg to 1000 kg car moving requires energy and a substantial push force. Push force is given by the gear and the energy is derived by fuel, this is the reason why lower gears consume more fuel. Once the car gets moving it is all rosy then, as all the higher gears are doing is maintaining speed"
@@BrownCarGuyI thought it was a given that lower gears will use more fuel...that would mean more emissions surely? Try searching about lower gears, not the speed being applied
The ULEZ expansion is just to get blanket coverage of cameras. Next comes Pay-per-mile for every vehicle with a number plate, and the exchequer will put VAT on the payments. EV home charging will eventually have to have a separate smart meter for fuel VAT rate. I also think EV owners will have to start paying an annual fee (VATable) for the road damage caused by their weight and the air pollution from excessive tyre and brake wear.
@@jimjones-bk2is what about 15 minute cities then. I've heard you can only do 100 trips a year and if you have two cars 50 trips each. This to me says they want us out of cars!
After recently driving in Scotland and have to drive through these 20mph zones I can tell you that I had never had so main pedestrians step out into the road in front of me. If anything these zones produce complacency among pedestrians.
Sadiq Khan’s, to reduce toxic air by expanding the ULEZ to greater London will not work. He doesn’t really care about toxic air quality and here is why: - He has already made the toxic air far worse since he has introduced the LTN’s which have increased the toxic air on the main roads because we are forced to use them as there are no other alternatives, especially during rush hour. The roads are now grid locked with traffic moving at walking pace and the fumes are getting denser and not dispersing. LTN’s need to be reopened as it is causing more damage than good. Among all this, the mileage in vehicles has also increased due to the fact that we are forced to go the long way round to get to the required destination - all accumulating to even more emission being emitted! Bravo Sadiq & team. - The health for pedestrians and children as they walk along these main routes to get to stations, schools, shops is deteriorating. Even the drivers inhale more fumes when we are stuck in stationary traffic. This is really aggravating and makes no sense! - Cycle Lanes: Should not be taking up an extra lane of the roads, large pavements could be divided into two for cyclists. - The introductions of 20MPH roads are also a problem because emission fumes don’t disperse quickly and the air is getting even more polluted because of the need to drive in lower gears. Sadiq’s statement: “It is to reduce toxic air pollution” is clearly not accurate and is making matters worse. The situation is getting extremely out of hand and something needs to be done to stop him from ruining our climate even more. He should resign and Londoners should vote for someone who will make London a greater and more desirable place to live in. There needs to be a more logical and strategic plan that is well thought. A couple of months ago I started a Facebook group called “Action Against 20 mph Speed Limits”. After a slow start, it now has almost 22,000 members, with about a thousand more joining every day, so obviously a lot of people feel strongly about this issue!

Here in Belgium the government gave rights to cities and town to fine you when you drive too fast in a 50 km/h zone and keep the money. So every town is now introducing 30 km/h and traject control to fine you so they have easy money. Some companies now offer "TaaS" Traject control as a service. The company sets up all traject control cameras and keep the money as a business model. A small city "Bonheide" went so far that the company demanded the city to remove all roadblocks and speed bumps so they can catch as many cars as possible. The city Mechelen wants to fine you when you drive 31 km/h in a 30 km/h zone. Mechelen has turned into a North Korean surveillance state. We used to driver 90 km/h, but they they reduced it to 70 km/h with the excuse that it would simplify the number of signs. Now they are lowering the 70 km/h to 50 km/h and put up massive signs to a point that some Chinese company gets wealthy rich in providing these signs. I see traffic jams where none was before on almost every moment of the day.
I’ve seen Met police traffic officers with a speed gun on a residential 20 mph road. So watch out. The issue for me is the 20 mph limit is 24 hrs. So driving in the early hours is a bind when there’s not much on the road. Have them set outside schools, hospitals and train stations. But for everywhere else have a timed 20 mph during rush hours or for a 12 hour period, then revert to 30 mph. These adjustable speed signs could be solar powered matrix type signs with an inbuilt timer to change the figures at the right times. There has to be give and take and I’m afraid with these limits it’s to much take.
Pure government control of the people . They got us all wearing masks to see if we conform to there bidding . They are all laughing at us as we bow down to there orders. Korea and China all started like this. Now their government controls them like sheep.
I think the work you’re doing is fantastic Brown Car Guy . The Uk councils and government are applying a type of self harm to our economy .so many things are broken such as the pothole ridden roads, the police, NHS , ect . now they inflict financial pain to delivery ,Taxi drivers and their customers and everyone who drives . Its all an utter nonsense .
My experience as a motorist in 20 mph speed limit areas, is cyclist and pedestrians seem more likely to be unpredictable in their behaviour. So I would in the course of time expect to see increase in the number of accidents in 20 limits "zones" as they are rolled out.
Yes, pedestrians seem to walk out in front of me at last moment like they expect me to stop, when its physically impossible to stop. I can slow, but not stop in time. I think a lot of entitled stupid people have misunderstood this priority heirarchy and think they can just demand a car stop for them.
Everything you have said makes sense. Drivers of vehicles are not stupid and can think for themselves. This speed limit should apply to all housing estates, schools etc., not major roads. Certain areas can have a time period allocated to them i. e. schools and the like. Having said the obvious, motorists are being forced to follow draconian laws and legislations, yet every other mode of transport doesn't. Motorists are being forced off the roads, while no other mode of travel is being delivered to compensate for it.
I know a lot of people that delivery drivers and taxi drivers that are quitting there job soon, they are making less money for the same hours, also endangering their license. Easier to stack shelves in a supermarket than drive a bus at 20mph with added traffic
A lot of the signage makes little sense where I live in Hounslow you often see a sign end of 20 limit then a few yards later another 20 sign it confusing plus the amount of drivers that drive well under 20 mph its just frustrating .
The reason that there is 20 MPH limits is the roads do not need repairing so often saving Billions of pounds. You do not notice the potholes so much at 20 MPH or the worn out tarmac. So if no money spent repairing the roads why are we paying road tax for it?
to be honest i ignore most speed limits everywhere apart from outside schools or parks/play areas, my car does 40mph in first and 70mph in second so I like to utilize what i paid for, plus 20mph just makes for a more unaware driver, I had do go through south east London a few months back from Catford up to Peckham in my daily, after 5 min of doing 20mph i wasn't even paying attention anymore especially after multiple cyclists overtook me.
I drove the entire length of Whitchurch rd in Cardiff today at 30mph. its a 20mph rd but surprisingly i navigated the entire rd without killing myself or anyone else...and thats exactly what im going to continue to do here in Wales after September.
This is borderline entrapment by police and local authorities, the driver has always been the go to cash cow when more money wanted. We are all just a number to these people.
I drove through Nottingham city centre a few weeks ago not having been there for ages and noticed most of the roads were now restricted to 20mph. Obviously, not wanting a ticket I obeyed. But I was being severely tailgated and wondered if perhaps the cameras weren't yet switched on? Clearly, some local knowledge was at work by those behind me. It made me really anxious too. I didn't enjoy that feeling and won't be visiting again any time soon. Some councils are also proposing that many national speed limit rural roads will have a blanket 30mph limit imposed. One councillor (I forget who) said that the current 60mph is wholly inappropriate "for these kinds of roads". A lot of rural roads have already been knocked back to 50mph and to be honest, I don't mind that. But how in the world could they consider a further 20mph reduction on these? It's ridiculously slow. But the worse part about it is that there is very little evidence from accident statistics to suggest that these roads are particularly unsafe. Edit: Most (manual) cars perform well in 3rd gear at 30mph and remain efficient and responsive. At 20mph they really struggle unless you change down a gear. But because of the choice of ratios, in 2nd gear the engine speed is too high at 20mph, I suspect leading to significantly increased emissions.
We were told because EVs are a lot heavier than ice cars. If one of those hit you a 30 will do a lot of damage to you. So the 20 mph was brought in because of them
That is exactly the problem I was thinking of. Eyes belong on the road and suroundings, not on the speedo every 10 seconds. Same can be said about speed bumps, in this case your eyes are focused on the road, looking for the damned things almost ignoring what is happening on the pavements!
We are Welsh and live in Wales.Bus, delivery and Taxi drivers that I have spoken to are all of the opinion that the 20 m.p.h. limits will be detrimental. We are anticipating the Welsh Government will also be increasing the portion of our motorway that has already been reduced to 50mph.This is badly thought out and unlikely to benefit anybody. You are right in saying some of our roads are very scenic, but again our narrow minded Government has stopped the planning of any new roads. Travel East to West / West to East is not easy apart from the M4.I am not keen on Electri Vehicles but if you want to tour Wales or work in this Country in one you are going to have real problems for the foreseeable future! There are fewer Public Charging points in Wales than just about anywhere else in the UK and there is no clear strategy to provide them.Plenty of new extra-wide stretches of virtually unused pavements which do not seem to link any particular settlements and ever reducing Bus routes. The Senedd seems to think everyone in Wales will be able to walk or cycle to get about.
The 20mph speed limits help the oil industry sell more gasoline, and they are wrecking my nerves. In front of schools, hospitals and retirement homes etc. or in regions with above average accident risk 20mph is ok, everywhere else it's not.
@@BrownCarGuy It's not an issue for the oil industry 😄 Yes, driving in a higher gear saves fuel, but at 20mph i can't use the most fuel efficient 5th gear, instead i have to use 3rd. 😵 And on the roads in my city where they already established a 20mph speed limit on i arrive at red lights more often, so driving takes even longer.
I have had cyclist overtake me when I am sticking to the 20mph limit. Buses up my arse on the Hammersmith gyratory. It's mostly 4 lanes wide. All 20mph. Other roads in Fulham with big yellow cameras waiting for me to do 21mph. It's ridiculous. Coming home from a shift at 4am. Doing 20mph is stupid. They should be time limited. Good video.
It has nothing to do with safety. It is to encourage people out of there cars but there is no viable alternative in most areas, especially if there is a requirement to carry goods or equipment. This is being rolled out by, mainly, Labour Councils and Mayor's across the UK with no regard for the consequences of their actions. This is World Economic Forum policy being implemented by our Government through the back door by allowing this to occur. There is no Consultation with the people, and where Consultation has been provided the result has been dismissed.
On the bright side, at 20 mph you get to drive in the ULEZ for that much longer and hence get more time in the zone for which you've paid to drive in! 😅
WHO BUYS A MOTOR VEHICLE TO TRAVEL AT 20mph ?? it's bad for the engine, consumes more fuel, your concentration gets worse when you are moving slowly, and Cyclist are moving faster than you. At one of those "speed awareness course" they claimed that "if you hit a pedestrian at 20mph they are more likely to live, than if you hit them at 30mph". Getting hit by any moving vehicle at any speed is potentially fatal, also slow moving vehicles seem to encourages pedestrians and other motorist emerging from side roads to jump in front of you. Hence the reason more accident happen in towns. THE WEALTHY won't be happy until they have the roads to themselves, whilst THE PEASANTS scurry alone the overcrowded pavements!!
I live on the main road around the western coast of Wales. Between built up area's the speed limit (for now) is from 40-70mph, depending on what part of the road you are travelling on. In the built up area's it is a 30mph limit. Good luck getting all the van and lorry drivers sticking to 20mph on THOSE roads. It will be REALLY funny when the cycle brigade pass them all going down hill, as cycleists DO NOT stick to any speed limit when the red mist of lycra descends.
Cycleists (lol) aren't legally obliged to stick to limits. Something about them not weighing literally several tons makes them an order of magnitude less dangerous at any speed than a car so it's not entirely unreasonable for the law to treat them differently.
Where I live some of the roads have six feet wide grass verges before you get to the pedestrian pavement, even busses and police go faster than the posted 20, unless they are stuck behind a cyclist.
In Wales we have 20mph limits and speed ramps, how stupid is that? We also have 20mph limits on "B" roads out in the countryside with hedges either side. At the weekend I was also on one beautiful stretch of main road, straight with hedges either side and the limit had been reduced to 40mph. No thought has gone into this, it's obvious to me that governments are anti car and are making driving for the motorist as miserable as possible with no obvious gains whatsoever. Where has the theory of restricting the speed of the road where they continue to have accidents?
I believe it's a deliberate ploy to bring in other charges. The 20mph has increased congestion in my area in Tower Hamlets, plus a lot of traffic lights they have reduced the green light time so you're sitting at red for much longer. They will cite increased congestion plus pollution and bring in congestion charge everywhere.
My estate was converted to 20MPH a few years ago, the consultation cited 10 no-fatal accidents over 5 years of which 6 were on the entrance/exits to the estate which aren't even covered by the scheme. I'm not conviced that it's made any difference; the delivery drivers, taxis and parents still do 30+ even on the narrow sections where kids might run out between cars. I think that Wales changing the default limit will cause confusion when England is 30.
Perhaps England should follow suit? Obviously, I'm joking - except it's likely to actually happen too 😢. We are sadly heading quickly to a car-less future. My parents both fought in WW2 to give us the freedoms we enjoy today and it makes me so sad to imagine what they'd think if they were alive today. What gets my beef though is that anyone who objects is immediately labelled "right-wing extremists". Effectively this is mass cancel culture 😢
Vehicles are safer than anytime in history, autonomous braking, radar etc. though the speed limit is going lower. Clearly nothing to do with safety that's for sure!
Its not just 20mph. I recently took an 8 mile route which used to be my daily drive to work 15 years ago. No 20mph limits but most of the 40 zones are now 30 and all of the 60 zones (allegedly the "national speed limit") have been reduced to 50. Why? The areas which used to be 60 are all out in the country. This was deemed safe for decades. Speed limit reduction is a creeping menace.
My friend they are turning London into a 15 minute city they are doing it slowly with LTNS 20 speed limits are so they can get a good shot of your registration ULEZ is the camera system needed to control the 15 minute zones ITS COMING TO LONDON
It's definitely more dangerous. I'm always the one crawling along getting harassment from other drivers. They give up. Drive on the wrong side to overtake and because they are frustrated they are going faster than the previous 30 crazy. And I'm the one feeling guilty for holding them up.
WHY has no one invented something that prevents car emissions - a filter in the exhaust? I know nothing about cars but surely humans must have it be able to invent that technology??
They have. Catalytic converts and many other measures which car manufacturers have been working on non-stop. But the authorities simply move the goalposts. For example the current limit on NOx emissions is 0.06 grams per kilometer. Thats so low its almost impossible to measure.
Picking up the Belfast study point, EVERY change in the speed limit along a route entails, of neccessity, a period of deceleration and acceleration, i.e. more braking and more fuel, the change of which is the MOST inefficient period of any mode of transport and power type, furthermore it is a period of greater driver involvement and thus distraction. Now slowing from the open country national limit of often 60 but also 50 down to 30 is a drop of up to 50%, reducing to just 20 the drop becomes 66%, I can't do the maths but it would be interesting to calculate all the consequences of costs and pollution. The other problem of course is that even if a 20 limit is reasonable at 3:00 pm, it might be absurd at 11:00 pm which demonstrates that these curtailments have little if anything to do with nebulous safety or polution issues but are essentially political.
The problem with 20 mph speed is those who dream these ideas do not live in reality usually are against cars No real research is done to see if they actually help plus if you go any slower may as will push the cars along if the pollution is not reason then safety but why dump so much of the responsibility on the driver's how about teaching people how to cross the road and those that don't cross correctly fine them like those with their heads in their phone's if the father of the car saw this he would say so much for my invention of getting people about faster and in their own time all my effort was a waste of time as someone said common sense isn't very common
Surely this will create more congestion and emissions. Also 20mph is not the most efficient or economical way to drive ad you're effectively only in 2nd or 3rd gear.
Hi I live in Spain and the 30 k limit is here however, central roads are hard to drive faster suburban roads are usually back to 50k 30 mph. In Spain you don’t lose your points as drivers have points and lose them for offences for speeding ie no points in England would be added for speeding alone however, you get prosecuted for careless driving about 15 mph over and that a separate and far more serious offence more so than in the UK. Finally Spanish drivers seem to totally ignore speed limits especially the new slower ones and just a very final thing because it’s a big job to change all the speed signs in Spain you can still be prosecuted if the speed limit is lower than the speed sign so long as it’s been published somewhere.
They set these limits purely to raise money from fines thats all there is no other reason to do this. And the fact they calculate how much they are expected to earn from them proves that. They don't expect people to stick to it. Other half is a van driver in London and got a ticket 23mph he has said its really hard to stick to 20mph, get all his deliveries done and get finished in time Which it is.
Good video. I have just performed an experiment. I drove from one side of Gloucester to another. All within the ring road, which is the area that campaigners are trying to push for 20mph. It was painful and embarrassing. I got one beep, a couple overtakes and some funny looks. Apart from holding up traffic and looking like a doddery 100 year old driving along, what was more profound was the sheer un-naturalness of it. Some roads through town that were busy, it felt fine to go at 20, and anywhere past schools for example, fine. make it 10mph past schools. We all understand the importance of care while driving past schools. But It's simply way too slow on most urban roads that sprawl all over a city or town. These are the veins and arteries of a population centre. Because it feels SO un-natural to drive this slowly on empty, uncongested roads, 100% no one will do it. Completely and utterly ridiculous.
I can’t understand why you are complaining about 20mph limits, when you have really bad driving habits. Driving with your Left Hand on the Gear Stick, Waving your Right Hand Around and No Hands on The Steering Wheel, Incorrect Grip by Holding The Steering Wheel at or Near The Bottom, so in Effect Not in Correct Control of Your Vehicle.
Thanks again for a good vid. I enjoyed your investigation into London air pollution,it`s a pitty our leaders dont have your ability of logical analytical thinking.Keep up the good work.
Yes and don't forget that while you are looking at the speedo you are expected to read the abundance of signage we now have in every position you can think of, negotiate speed ramps, and while you are doing all this you might get a chance to see if a pedestrian or cyclist is doing something silly.
@@ireallylovegod…. That’s not true! … mine doesn’t engage until 30mph. Up until then the cruise control digits are just two - - dashes! …. Perhaps you are blanket covering new cars and not my 2008 Renault. I have to use the speed limiter sub 30mph.
20mph less engine revs than 30? I doubt you would be in the same gear at both speeds. At 30 I would be in 4th gear but at 20 I would be in 3rd or even 2nd so probably higher revs, definitely not lower. I will try it tomorrow and add further comment.
So, I'm doing just over 1200rpm in 4th at 30mph. At 20mph I drop down to 3rd and its just under 1200rpm so actually slightly less revs...but the engine is not so happy with that speed/gear combo feeling a little strained so its down to 2nd and revs up to 2000rpm. I don't think alot of cars are geared to happily cruise at 20mph with low rpm. 30mph limits are common and cars are geared to accommodate this.

Steam engine, internal combustion engine, trains, cars, ships, industrial revolution to name a little bit of progress in my book. What about our efforts to explore space? Most, if not all things we do today would not be possible without transport and by transport, I don`t mean the bicycle. So I think the car IS progress.
@@TheTemporalAnomaly the Industrial Revolution has brought the species to edge of extinction for the first time in about 70000 years. I'm not sure that that represents progress to be honest.
Also police in their vans also in cars hiding the car & standing at the side of the road with their speed gun trying to catch anyone going over the 20mph which they have done. Like you said ordinary citizens made to look like criminals lol i know many people that have been catch doing 22 to 25 mph & have had to pay fine & take the speed course. The real criminals that do speed not a few miles over the limit I'm talking reckless speeds are not caught or punished as the car is stolen or number plate is cloned. It's just another way to collect more money from us all as we try to go about our daily lives.
Here's the thinking behind it let's make 30mph limits into 20mph limits then just think how many more speeding tickets we can hand out but let's just say it's all about safety.
Cars are most efficient around 60-65 miles per hour. The slower you go, under that, the more fuel per hour will be used. 20mph is definitely more hungry on fuel, than 30mph. Plus, when you're journey takes 33% longer, then you will are producing much more pollution, per journey, for sure. There is very little public transport in my area, in South Wales and the rail service is officially amongst the worst in the UK. So you need a car, even to do basic, daily activities. Yet I will still have to drive at 20 miles an hour, putting out at least 45% MORE fumes per journey, at 11.30 at night, when there is no one around. It's totally crazy, and not beneficial to anyone.
This is what we now have to live with all across Wales. It's way too slow. Very few main roads in Wales get as congested as the main roads of South East England. However, now I often find myself crawling along at 15mph in a queue of traffic with absolutely nothing ahead of the car at the front of the queue. Bloody madness.
Hi brown car Guy I can't agree with you when you said driving slower less pollution because if you drove 5 miles to your house say it took 20 min at 20 mph. At 30 mph it will take you 15 min so for 5 min your not on the road so pollution will be the same ? Am I correct ? Maybe I'm not ? What do you reckon?
Thanks for your comment. You know it's an interesting thing, I looked for credible data that pollution would increase at lower speeds, however I only found the contrary. Now the length of time I guess would balance out against the overall lower emissions from the car because of the lower engine speeds and reduced and less harsher braking. However, some people have pointed out that for some cars, driving at 20 necessitates a lower gear. In the car I was driving, it could easily do 20mph in a higher gear, but it's a big lusty engine by comparison to many smaller hatchbacks, so it behaves differently. I will try to look further into this, but I think more data and scientific research might be needed.
Brown being that we got speed cameras, 20mph roads, 15 min city's and cameras everywhere and parking restrictions, and can't move anywhere whats the chances of getting those stupid speed humps removed. Re melting the tarmac and getting the khan and councils to repair the potholes lol. 🤣
In Ireland any narrow road with houses on both sides and cars parked on the kerb will generally have a limit of 30 km/h by default. Honestly I've never seen an issue with it because it seems like the highest speed you'd want to travel at given the risk of kids and pets running between cars onto the road. urban roads that are wider and have better visibility are 50 km/h or 60 km/h which feels perfectly balanced
20mph might be more economical in some cars, perhaps those which have a hamster running on a wheel under the bonnet. But my C200 mercades at 20mph sits in 2nd gear at 2,000rpm where its only getting about 15-20mpg at that pace and it cannot upshift into 3rd otherwise it will lug the engine. However at 30mph the car cruises in 4th gear with an engine speed of just 1200rpm, it gets around 30-35mpg at this pace. So if they want any car with an engine bigger than 1 litre to pollute more, crack on with your 20mph limits but I want a fuel rebate as your forcing certain people like myself to use more fuel.
I break more at 30 km/h than 50 km/h. Just to keep your target speed to not risk a speeding ticket and also confusing what other vehicles will do will make me touch my break more. 30 km/h also increases the fact that you get in a traffic jam in front of red lights. Also if I drive 30 km/h my trip may take 10 minutes, but at 50 km/h it takes 6 minutes. The total pollution is the pollution(per minute) x time (in minutes) should be equal. In addition if I live in a 30 km/h city then my car will be cold when I start and drive. My car will pollute more because it takes more time to get to operating temperature. And here in Belgium we have pollution canyons. The air from the vehicles stays in certain streets more because the buildings are preventing it to spread around.
Drove to/around London this weekend, I didn’t know about this change. I’d say it’s less sketchy with the way people dive out of junctions in London, but the big issue is, cars are now travelling the same speed as push bikes, I had multiple cyclists close pass me on the inside, I witnessed one cyclist about get themselves flattened undertaking just before a car made a left hand turn.
RAC findings showed that a city centre 20mph intervention had little impact on long-term outcomes including road traffic collisions, casualties and speed, except for a reduction in traffic volume.
respect for speed limits has to be earned like all respect, respect can easily be destroyed ie 20 limits and 50 limits, if its safe to do 50 it is safe to do 60, if a road is so dangerous that a 20 limit is needed it should be closed for traffic
In London the traffic never goes over 15 Mph so there is no need for 20mph zones in London and if the roads are 20mph ULEZ is not needed so should be scrapped but that is a different video great video keep up with the good work

The ECCI said the report, by the authoritative Transport Research Laboratory (TRL), showed there were clear trade-offs involved.
It said: “Reducing urban speed limits has concomitant health, community and safety benefits, but is likely to raise greenhouse gas emissions..”
The TRL report said cutting speeds below 40mph was likely to increase pollution, such as nitrogen oxides and particulates.

Hey BCG
Good vid as ever.
Well, im a van driver and go to London 3/4 days per week, so stand by for an essay
20 MPH limits are wrong, wrong wrong wrong!
1 They create a need for more signage, wasting recources
2 They encourage morons to walk in the road without fear
3 They create traffic by slowing everyone down and Disrupting traffic flow
4 They take drivers eyes off the road, we spend to much time checking, speed, signs, cameras all day long.
5 Cars with petrol/diesel engines were not designed to go that slowly for that long
6 Its very difficult speed to maintain, i end up doing 17/18 half the time, again, taking my eyes off the road
7 This is a bit of an obscure one, it can be hard to get past cyclists, ive had the the same cyclist over take me, then me over take him 10 times each till we finally go our own ways.
And finally
8 20 MPH zones would have been laughed at before the days of cameras, As you have said most people ignore them most of the time. But they can make big bucks for the local authorities.
Essay over
Hope you enjoyed it?
It’s a great point you make about cyclists and relative traffic on motorways as well. I never feel comfortable surrounded by cars on a motorway all doing the same speed, and I always prefer to speed up ans create a gap. And the cyclist thing is as pathetic as it is hilarious 🤣

2 The streets do not belong exclusively to motor vehicles

Living in Wales, this 20 mph thing will be a dangerous nightmare. Your video is car-centric, but consider (or interview) motorcyclists too.

Seems to be a war on drivers in the whole western world... the rest of the world has far more sense.

That's the whole point.............
I disagree with the pollutiion arguement. At a lower speed, you've got to drive in a lower gear, but the engine revs will about be the same, so you're emitting the same pollutiuion for longer
Believe me I tried to find solid evidence that it increases pollution but all I found was the contrary.

After recently driving in Scotland and have to drive through these 20mph zones I can tell you that I had never had so main pedestrians step out into the road in front of me. If anything these zones produce complacency among pedestrians.
Didn't they change the rules for pedestrians so they can actually just walk out! All planned
Sadiq Khan’s, to reduce toxic air by expanding the ULEZ to greater London will not work.
He doesn’t really care about toxic air quality and here is why:
- He has already made the toxic air far worse since he has introduced the LTN’s which have increased the toxic air on the main roads because we are forced to use them as there are no other alternatives, especially during rush hour.

Sad, Europe is becoming a police state by using the Environment as the escape goat. They want to control more and more of your actions everyday.
Come on your thinking logically those that come up with these don't plus making money is in their minds

20mph limits mean less pothole damage. That is a bonus.
Because heavy vehicles damage the roads. Also everybody pays for the roads.
30mph was perfect! 20mph is ridiculous.

So the 20 mph was brought in because of them
Ive started using cruise control in 20 zones because otherwise i spend way too much time looking at the Speedo.
Most cruize control systems wont activate until 30mph. however you can use the speed limiter instead.
@@oojimmyflip not sure if it's technically cruise control but you just press a button and it maintains a speed that you set. It works below 30mph

We are Welsh and live in Wales.Bus, delivery and Taxi drivers that I have spoken to are all of the opinion that the 20 m.p.h. limits will be detrimental.
I think that's the least of the issues here, but stick your car in a higher gear, it should use less fuel.
@@BrownCarGuy It's not an issue for the oil industry 😄
Yes, driving in a higher gear saves fuel, but at 20mph i can't use the most fuel efficient 5th gear, instead i have to use 3rd. 😵 And on the roads in my city where they already established a 20mph speed limit on i arrive at red lights more often, so driving takes even longer.
Fantastic content, keep it up
Thank you Dredd!
There is no Consultation with the people, and where Consultation has been provided the result has been dismissed.
so now everyone will be scrolling through their phones behind the wheel or die of boredom
Time to stick a film on
On the bright side, at 20 mph you get to drive in the ULEZ for that much longer and hence get more time in the zone for which you've paid to drive in! 😅
That's a very Monthy Python point of view 😂😂😂
@@BrownCarGuy I did work for The Ministry of Silly Drives. 😀

@@jameslomax3 they still can kill pedestrians if they knock them over you Lycra clad ponce
You are being forced to drive in a lower gear = higher revs lower speed = more emissions, it's not rocket science 🤷♂
It does increase pollution as I use a lower gear but higher revs so not to get a ticket.
I can relate, but probably best to stick it in a higher gear and just cruise, car will feel calmer.
@@BrownCarGuy might be lucky but my car idles at 20mph in 3rd
I agree, my car is not happy in 4th gear but in 3rd it is revving higher, so must be using more petrol.
20mph is crazy bad for cars and pollution.Of course part of this bolshevik war on cars.
Cameras around my way don't stay up for long, the one's in my immediate area track the speed of airplanes.
🤣
lol Steven
Don’t bet against it going down to 10 MPH
Then 0
The problem with 20 mph speed is those who dream these ideas do not live in reality usually are against cars
No real research is done to see if they actually help plus if you go any slower may as will push the cars along if the pollution is not reason then safety but why dump so much of the responsibility on the driver's how about teaching people how to cross the road and those that don't cross correctly fine them like those with their heads in their phone's if the father of the car saw this he would say so much for my invention of getting people about faster and in their own time all my effort was a waste of time as someone said common sense isn't very common
Great channel. Solid observations and well put together.
Much appreciated!
Surely this will create more congestion and emissions. Also 20mph is not the most efficient or economical way to drive ad you're effectively only in 2nd or 3rd gear.
They don’t reduce accidents but do increase pollution.
20 mph only enrages people. Every chance you get you exceed it double.
They set these limits purely to raise money from fines thats all there is no other reason to do this. And the fact they calculate how much they are expected to earn from them proves that. They don't expect people to stick to it. Other half is a van driver in London and got a ticket 23mph he has said its really hard to stick to 20mph, get all his deliveries done and get finished in time
Which it is.

I think the wheels have fallen off the Earth.
Agree
I can’t understand why you are complaining about 20mph limits, when you have really bad driving habits. Driving with your Left Hand on the Gear Stick, Waving your Right Hand Around and No Hands on The Steering Wheel, Incorrect Grip by Holding The Steering Wheel at or Near The Bottom, so in Effect Not in Correct Control of Your Vehicle.
It causes more emissions as the cars cannot heat the catalytic converter enough to work another money grab
Thanks again for a good vid. I enjoyed your investigation into London air pollution,it`s a pitty our leaders dont have your ability of logical analytical thinking.Keep up the good work.
Well, most cars cruise control won't engage at 20mph - typically the minimum speed is in the mid 20s. Make of that what you will.
Yes and don't forget that while you are looking at the speedo you are expected to read the abundance of signage we now have in every position you can think of, negotiate speed ramps, and while you are doing all this you might get a chance to see if a pedestrian or cyclist is doing something silly.
They all engage at 20mph.If the driver even knows what cruise control is😂
@@ireallylovegod…. That’s not true! … mine doesn’t engage until 30mph. Up until then the cruise control digits are just two - - dashes! …. Perhaps you are blanket covering new cars and not my 2008 Renault. I have to use the speed limiter sub 30mph.
@@_MrL_ Ok, almost all engage at 20 , a 2008 renault is an exception in more ways than one , no offence.
30mph limits are common and cars are geared to accommodate this.
completely agree with your opinion put side schools during the day time only but kept to the boundary of the school not 1 or 2 miles on each direction

You are not allowed to have fun in your car, they want us all to be miserable, love this content very balanced argument.

Meanwhile a electric scooter and cyclist overtakes

So get one of those instead.

It's good for the environment , I work for royal mail and people try to overtake when you do up to 20 mph. it's dangerous. in some places.
20mph at 03:00 in London
Is so painful
Yup
RAC findings showed that a city centre 20mph intervention had little impact on long-term outcomes including road traffic collisions, casualties and speed, except for a reduction in traffic volume.
When the 20mph limits are introduced, pedestrians take more risks crossing the road, probably figuring less risk.
When MP's start biking to work in the freezing rain en masse so will I
respect for speed limits has to be earned like all respect, respect can easily be destroyed ie 20 limits and 50 limits, if its safe to do 50 it is safe to do 60, if a road is so dangerous that a 20 limit is needed it should be closed for traffic
It’s sure gonna be difficult to spot the April Fools jokes this year.
