The black cherries from cherry trees I have experience with are either super sweet or bitter. We used to make jams from the bitter ones. It was tedious removing all the pits, but it sure was rewarding. They stain so bad, but black cherries are so delicious! And yes, they do have a wine flavour as well and are great for wild life. They produce so many fruits, enough both for humans and wild life creatures.
They are a beautiful tree, interesting info, we got a bunch of them out here in the midwest. I dont know if you have a video on wild plums yet, they turning ripe now, but we have had a great year for them out here and they taste amazing, best I've ever had of them, I think all the rain this past month really ripened them to their full potential.
Found a nice young Black Cherry tree with larger than usual fruit the other day, it was near an ancient indian mound. Also in the same area was the largest population of wild Apios Americana I'd ever seen, makes me wonder.
Most scat I see from black cherry has intact pits. I love the fruit but have never eaten the seeds. Do you think drying the fruit whole like chokecherry would make the seed more edible?
My kids and I collected thousands of them a couple weeks ago when they were at their peak here in CT. They make great jelly, although it is labor intensive. I prefer to eat them raw, then disperse the pits so that more can grow 😎
Black cherry grows in northern ontario too. Very huge range....didn't know they grew in Guatemala that too me is awesome...wish that was the case for all trees 😂..would love a sapodilla in zone 4.
Great stuff! We have been chowing these this year - seems like every tree is loaded! I didn't know that bout the pits! Is it also safe for humans to eat the pits?
For some reason I can never find the fruit despite finding so many trees! It seems most of the trees I find have a small canopy and are incredibly tall
I know you're a busy man I really enjoy your videos would love to see more thanks for sharing
Hey Akiva,
That’s great, what a harvest! Would be brilliant to see the process of separating the fruit and making the fruit leather!
Thanks.
We just use a Foley food mill to separate the pulp from the pits. Very easy. Then dry in dehydrator
I love love these wild cherries.
Very valuable information. Thanks so much.

Akiva, they grow well north of Maine... I know that Black Cherry grows around Northfield Quebec, at 46 deg North.
Thank you for saying that

Hey Akiva. Great video.
Do you have any info on how you process them to make fruit leather?
Thank you!!
I just run them through a Foley food mill and lay out the pulp on a dehydrator sheet
So what’s the easiest way to get these seeds to grow?
Any shipping outside the US? :( i understand probably not for pants but for pits...?

It's hard to get fruit in the woods. Gotta find trees in hedgerows, parks, and yards
Prunus serotina?
