just a heads up you forgot to cover the dk bongos. with only access to two buttons it allows you to really optimize your inputs and ignore all the extra uneeded things in a fg.
Cool list, but you're forgetting about the truly optimal controller: Bringing your own arcade cabinet to the tournement with no buttons for the opponent
They should make fighting game tournaments where everyone has a lottery as to which gaming peripheral they will recieve. Maybe you luck out an get a pad. Maybe you get hosed and get a Wii U nunchuck. It would definitely lower the skill cieling but it would be funny af.
Dictate device type by seed. Top seeded players draw from a pool of less-orthodox controllers. Give everyone a day to acclimate before the bracket starts. Would be funny as hell to see a top rated player whoop somebody's ass on a ddr pad.
I think we need to be considering the DDR Dance Mat in terms of undiscovered tech. Can you imagine the sweat glistening off your grippers as they tap dance a raging demon? GOATED stuff for sure.
i think truly optimal would be a piano; every key is a different combination of inputs, and it also inflicts untold mental damage when your opponent has to listen to the sound of their ass getting beat as a song
6 months late but it gave me an idea so i did some research. You could set up a MIDI keyboard nd some macros to actually do this pretty easily. A dude on reddit said he played through DMC5 like this lmao
All this time I thought I was bad. But clearly its because I use a bottom tier controller After watching this I bought a MAS Stick and won my local without even taking damage, life is good. Thanks JMCrofts
i went into this expecting a serious video about fighting game controllers and i wasn't disappointed. i'm definitely looking into the pizza box battle station. you can distract your opponent with the smell of a fresh, homemade pepperoni pizza while you mash out near impossible, frame perfect infinites and then have yourself a snack between rounds. 10/10 best controller.
When Dark Souls 1 PVP was popular and there was the term "backstab fishing" I actually got a PS1 fishing rod controller to work with the game. I actually beat a lot of players with it! The motion sensor still worked in it so I bound it to the normal R1 attack, so when I backstabbed people I had to swing the rod like I was casting out lmao, and the reel was bound to the roll button so I just cranked the reel to be able to roll around.
You missed the keyboard which is my primary controller for fighting games (as well as all games), I guess the hitbox is similar though. Overall great list.
Actually, any controller that allows you to type out the phrase "Furry porn is my favorite type of porn" is actually illegal and you should be arrested for indulging it.
I wonder if the biggest flex wouldn't be a modded Atari 2600 controller. Just a joystick and one button. If you can win with that, you can win with anything.
I beat my brother in mk deadly alliance on a house of the dead gun controller. Got good enough with it that I could constantly fatality with scorpion on it.
Don't forget about the PlayStation eye toy. Having to swing your arms to hit the opponent will assist in making you a better fighter in real life as well. Not to mention that because you'll have to stand behind your opponent they have to completely look away from the screen to read your inputs while giving you a clear visual advantage towards reading theirs.
Man, just ignoring the true top tier, the Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw controller. Being able to make a shitty chainsaw sound on command is peak intimidation factor.
I vote we turn 'goldeneye' into a verb. To goldeneye: to watch or monitor the opponent player's screen or controller inputs in order to gain an advantage. "Hey, stop goldeneyeing me!"
I've always heard this referred to as screen cheating / peeking. The hayday of splitscreen multiplayer was so long before the internet truly took off that I wouldn't be surprised there are dozens of different terms people have used for it.
Potemkin Battleststion is basically a mechanical macro. Now I’m imagining people 3D printing weird plastic contraptions for their Sticks/Controllers/boxes that facilitates hitting buttons in a specific order with specific timing.
I believe my dream controller would be the 9 stick hurt box, BUT all the sticks are the claw machine type with the button on the top of the stick. NOW that’s next level lol
I played once on American style buttons, on an arcade cabinet at this arcade bar in Brazil. My fingers genuinely hurt after 3-4 games and I play on stick, so I'm used to pressing arcade buttons. JM wasn't lying when he said they were heavy.
After long Devil May Cry sessions I think that it's safe to say that the big problem with pad is that it will make your wrists and fingers feel like a tissue box thrown into a blender, perhaps because of how baby tiny newer controllers are. The main issue with the Battle Station is that you can only practically use it at locals because you won't be able to bring it onto a plane.
I’ve never had much hand pain after playing DMC for long periods of time with an Xbox One controller, and I have pretty big hands. The only time I’ve ever had hand pain was when I played for 9 hours straight one time so unless you’re playing unreasonably long sessions with no breaks I don’t see why your hands would hurt (other than maybe getting friction burns on your thumbs). I have had that problem with PlayStation controllers though, I genuinely don’t think the DualShock controllers were meant for human hands, they’re so tiny. From what I’ve seen the Dualsense is a lot bigger so maybe that’s been fixed.
@@assassinonprozac Yeah, I can't put my hands on an Xbox-style controller with any degree of comfort, I've played mainly on Dualshock. Also a majority of my painful memories are definitely related to playing a lot of Nero so having to constantly hold down the shoulder buttons to keep the charge shot contributes to a lot of the left hand pain. For other games that use a lot of the D-pad for movement I will say that there's a ton of friction burn problems. Especially for fighting games where you do actively need to roll your fingers across the pad.
Coming from keyboard, to pad, to stick, now looking at hitbox. I was shocked the first time I saw someone think it was even odd, let alone cheating. It's just digital input, nearly identical to keyboard. It's just way more comfortable.

Just recently getting discussed since it's becoming more popular. At the end of the day each controller has its own unique edge compared to another and it's mostly about muscle memory and personal preference. The new hot controller is NEVER going to suddenly make you a pro or way better then someone else without putting in the time and training to begin with. Which if someone has done that they are good for definitely more reasons then there preference controller.
