Oh, you can totally use the dpad while moving. You just have to master The Claw™. You use your index finger on the dpad while your thumb is on the stick. Years of Monster Hunter on the PSP prepared me for this game lmao.
The Claw and I have history as well thanks to the PSP! :-) "Uncomfortable" would better describe this on PS controllers, but Xbox controllers are a different story!
Ha, came here to post exactly this! Years of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd with my friend made using my entire hand on each side of the controller a breeze. Please don't let my orthopedist see my hand while playing FFXIV.
@@FilmireI'm the exact opposite, claw on playstation feels very natural to me but on xbox using my index finger to use the analog stick just doesn't work for me
What I meant was that I don't think it's feasible on Xbox; sorry if that was unclear! Maybe someone can pull it off (and still have fun) but that person wouldn't be me!
You’re a good narrator, Filmire. Your transition from one topic to the next flows very smoothly. Very clear instructions. Your portraits at the bottom left of the screen are quite funny.
I usually learn at least something from videos about FF14's UI settings. From this one, I learned that you can change color of display names by role. This is a nice video Catjammin' to Batalia Downs
Using a Steam Deck or Steam controller allows you to assign both face pad and d-pad buttons to the right pad. I put the d-pad buttons at the cardinal points and the face buttons in the intercardinal points. This allows you to use all cross hotbar combinations while using the left pad or analog stick. It's also useful for navigating menus while running.
@@phenlism Sure! Assign a Touch Menu to the Right Touchpad. > Either assign it 9 buttons or create the buttons in the following order > Button 1 = X, Button 2 = D-Pad Up ^, Button 3 = Y, Button 4 = D-Pad Left , Button 7 = A, Button 8 = D-pad Down v, Button 9 = B. If you look at the touchpad as a compass Up, Down, Left, and Right will be at North, South, East, and West respectively. In between those points you'll have the face buttons attached to the intercardinal directions. A, B, X, and Y will be at Southwest, Southeast, Northwest, and Northeast respectively. Takes a bit of muscle memory to remember that Southwest is [Confirm] and Southeast is [Cancel] but it was easier for my brain to shift the face buttons 45 degrees clockwise than it was to disassociate Up and Down from North and South. This will allow you to navigate menus while you still have your thumb on the left analog stick as well as pull off D-Pad assigned Cross Hotbar abilities without having to autorun or use your left index finger as a claw.
@@phenlism Alternatively, to lessen miss taps you can keep them segregated by assigning a Directional Pad to the Right Touchpad. Since You're on a Steam Deck you would still use the face buttons normally but could then reserve the Deck's Right Touchpad for D-Pad inputs. Making sure it's a 4-Way D-pad rather than an 8-Way will further minimize miss taps. I've found it quicker for me to just assign everything onto a touchpad though since I use a Steam Controller from time to time still. Having a symmetrical grip on my Steam Controller with the wider Touchpad surface area is still appreciated. it's harder to perfectly map my Steam Controller directly to the Deck since the Touchpads are just small enough that it begins to feel crowded when you go above 4 inputs, but either way, I can never go back to standard sticks and buttons from older controllers.
Using auto-run is a great tip for having your left thumb free. I already kind of do this when I'm KBM-ing by using the mouse to run forward instead of WASD. As you say, it gives you less control, but you can change direction by moving the camera with your right thumb so you can kind of make adjustments.
I target and run at the same time without problems. I just move my left thumb to dpad and right thumb to stick. I think I tend to have dpad combinations on my crossbar tend to be insta cast so that I can list target and hit the ability/spell without having to switch thumbs all the time if I need to use more than one in quick succession but it’s been so long I forget about the specifics of my setup.
theres an auto targeting setting, this is a must. u dont need to select enemies anymore, once u cast an skill it autotargets the next enemy in front of you. that alleviates most of the targeting in dungeon pulls or after cancel partymembers.
I am a returning player who played keyboard and mouse for years and now is using a controller. Is it just me or does the controller feel a bit whack a moley? Its a lot of muscule memory having to hold L2 & R2 to tab target, release then to target assist on R3. Bouncing around like this feels bad. Any tips,
IMO building that muscle memory is key for either controller or KB+M, so unfortunately, I don't have a perfect answer for you. Though, I prefer having the assist and focus target actions on my hotbar (instead of L3 or R3) so I can combo them together more quickly. I rarely use tab targeting before an assist target switch; it is usually a focus target -> assist, or party list target -> assist.
Generally speaking with AoE, if there's 3+ targets, hopefully the tank has gathered them up together so the DPS can AoE them down, once there's less than 3 targets, then the DPS should switch to single target for pulls.
Doesn’t that first Raise Macro cause you to attempt to fire off Raise over and over even after you revive a party member blocking you from casting anything else until the macro runs its course?
No, because macros don't wait for an action to finish before trying the next one. So if a Raise cannot be performed (because the party member is alive or you are already casting a spell), it is skipped and nothing happens.
Wow never knew about assist targeting that will make trying out a healer so much easier, i will say as a dps tho dont you wanna use your AOE attacks on mobs?
Yes, in general you do want to use AoE, but sometimes you might want to strategically snipe out single targets to kill them faster, or focus your AoE center on a specific mob. I also like to alternate between single target and AoE attacks as White Mage. WHM's AoE (Holy) is very slow and its stun effect can be wasted if cast too quickly.
I play on console so using a controller is very simple. I just mash my tiny little racoon hands all over the buttons and pray I don't mess up my rotation.
it is truly impressive when someone on a controller plays this game game skillfully. I used a controller in ARR, HW, and SB when I used to play this game on ps3 and ps4. By the time i was playing on ps5, I had switched to kb and mouse. WIthin about 2 or 3 weeks of using a keyboard and mouse, my performanced improved in every possible way. I beleive that anything a keyboard and mouse player can do can also be done with a controller. It's just so much harder to do it even if you are perfectly comfortable with using both input devices. I appreciate this guide, even though i wouldn't bother with a controller anymore. I have developed arthiritis in recent years and simply cannot hold down the trigger buttons for very long orelse I get serious fatigue. It was interesting to see that there were a few tricks that I was unaware of. At the end of the day though, I don't see why anyone would make things hard on themselves by choosing to use a controller. esepecially because it's not necessary,. regardless of the platform that you use, both options are available. Some people say they want to be able to play on the couch or whatever, and so they believe a controller is their only option. I really don't udnerstand this logic. I am homeless and play on the literal ground. I use a logitech g600 and place it on my thigh. My entire hotbar is mapped to this mouse. it's smaller, more portable, and more ergonomic than a controller. anyways, thanks again for the video. I commend all of you that use a controller and can participate in all levels of content in this game. I don't know why you would make things more difficult for yourself, but I guess lots of people think it's fun to increase a game's difficulty beyond what is typical.
The macro system is probably the most bafflingly un-useful thing in the game imo. So much missed opportunity. WOW players know what macros should be able to do, and I don’t mean turning u into a robot. I mean, for example, a macro that changes what skill will be used depending on if u target friend or foe. Like on WHM, I wish I could use one button to use Regen if I target a party member, but use Dia if I target a monster. In WOW, the tooltip even changes in realtime when u switch target (and CD if the ability has one). And it doesn’t cause clipping - Is it really rocket science to think macros should allow queueing, too? Like, you know, so players will use them and like the game more?
