A Steady Diet of Meat & Water plus Donnie Thompson Throwback | PowerCast 209

  • In this bonus episode recorded this week, Mark talks about the first Keto style diet he was ever given. He was a teenager, and the coach who gave it to him only let him have meat and water at first. This coach (Ron Fedkiw), is a brilliant mathematician, is now Stanford professor, and has an Oscar for special effects technology. Back in the day, his bench press stats were beyond impressive.
    We talk about why some diet strategies seem to work better at certain times and for certain people. Mark has lost roughly 35-40 lbs recently, and talks about the conditioning workouts he's been doing lately.
    Finally, we reminisce about the time in 2011 when Donnie Thompson trained at Super Training during his quest to break the all-time multi-ply squat and total records. Included at the end of the episode is a short interview what was recorded at the time. It's from a UA-cam video Jim produced titled, "Nobody Gives a Damn About Your Squat."

    The 135lb squat knee and ankle pain discussion hit home ...Very rarely does it ever feel perfect for me.If i keep putting off squatting because of that i probably would squat only 3 times a year..

    I usually feel so low energy if I just eat meat and fats, maybe I need to do it for a bit longer to get past the initial hump.

  • @Hanuman_
    @Hanuman_ 7 років тому +5

    I think to be fair Mark has said any diet works, but disagree about people being addicted to carbs. If that's your problem you need a psychologist not a nutritionist.
    As an anecdote I've lost 23 pounds since April eating a diet composed of 20%p 60%c 20%f. This worked for the same reason any diet works: reduced caloric intake.

    • @Transition475
      @Transition475 7 років тому +2

      There's absolutely nothin wrong with carbs. Your body runs on it.

    • @TheJimMcD3SB
      @TheJimMcD3SB 7 років тому

      It's been said a million times on the show that any diet works...if you restrict calories. Mark even says IN THIS EPISODE that he's transitioned off keto for now. I would disagree with you about carbs, though. People can be addicted to anything without the need for mental help.

    • @Hanuman_
      @Hanuman_ 7 років тому

      Jim McDonald yes that's why I said that to counter the people who comment before watching. I think he bashes the calorie counters a bit because it's not always a social way of eating. But for someone like me counting calories is easier to stick to I have tried the Bro diet of chicken and rice before and ended up in good condition but I was also anemic, with severely depleted hormone levels as well as having lost muscle as a result. Not knowing much about calories I just ate 5 small meals of chicken and rice not knowing I was drastically under eating, and so I paid the price. Took me a long time to recover and am glad I now follow a more thought out, flexible and logical approach to diet, counting calories.

    • @TheJimMcD3SB
      @TheJimMcD3SB 7 років тому +1

      My take is that Mark internalized that stuff a long time ago and doesn't have to think about it in the same way that some other people would. IMO some people have to start by counting calories. Whether they have to do it forever is different issue.

    • @Hanuman_
      @Hanuman_ 7 років тому

      Jim McDonald fair point, I've tried not counting for bulking but my metabolism is fairly fast so I either don't eat enough and stay the same or eat too much and get fat lol.

      check your setup or pull from your sticking point, no reason to use bands or chains if your deadlift is at 385. work alot on Abs, low back ex, reverse hyper, goodmornigs.

    Just because you are healthy that doesn't give you the right to bad mouth fat people. You guys should be role models to the unhealthy population, lead by example and focus on teaching them how to lose fat , become healthy and regain their life back.
    Good information otherwise.

    Every cell in the body runs on glucose, the brain exclusively runs on glucose. That why you feel like shit on a keto diet and need a lot of stimulants like coffee throughout the day to function.

    • @Eighttroy19

    • @Hanuman_
      @Hanuman_ 7 років тому

      Conner Cannon yes but do you know what its purpose actually is? To stop your blood sugar levels from dropping too low. It converts other substrates into the carbs that your body needs to survive in order to compensate for the ones you took out of your diet.

    • @RsGig
      @RsGig 7 років тому +2

      I feel fine on Keto and most people I talk to feel fine. The first week sucks while your body is adjusting and kicking into keto. But once you are there you should be fine.

  • @Transition475
    @Transition475 7 років тому +13

    mark I like u but sometimes u talking PURE nonsense. A calories is a energy unit....it's like to joules or kWh (from your electricity bill) but for food.
    So saying a calorie isn't a calorie is like saying 1 kg of water weighs more/less then 1 kg of led .

    • @TheJimMcD3SB
      @TheJimMcD3SB 7 років тому +10

      He mentions individual differences in absorption, which do actually exist. In that case, calories in do not equal calories burned plus calories stored.

    • @BR-fn9pf
      @BR-fn9pf 7 років тому +2

      Deadstop not all calories are created equal. One of them is a calorie.

    • @Transition475
      @Transition475 7 років тому

      Jim McDonald any difference in absorption is neglectable. the calories that are printed on your food are almost exactly the amount of energy your body can absorb from the food.

    • @TheJimMcD3SB
      @TheJimMcD3SB 7 років тому +7

      So you're saying 900 calories of say, Coke or Pepsi, has the same impact on the body as 900 calories of say, chicken. Not available energy, but impact, hormonal and otherwise. I don't need to be able to prove that to intuit that it's not true.

    • @Transition475
      @Transition475 7 років тому +1

      Jim McDonald same effect health wise ? No . Bodyweight wise yeah - it's called the first law of thermodynamics "energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transferred " that means that if u eat 3000 calories from doughnuts a day and burn 3500 , you'll lose the same amount of weight as from eating 3000 calories from chicken breast. (Of course you'll lose more muscle + your health will decline drastically on the doughnut diet But weight loss will be at the EXACT same rate as the chicken breast diet )
      Now let's say u eat enough protein a day to eat preserve ur lean mass and u fill the rest of the calories with pure sugar - fat loss is going to be the same as if u ate avocados instead of auger .
      This is basic shit
