Great video and good job. Few words of advice from someone who worked on these Porsches for 20 years: 1-NEVER EVER .. use the water pumps with that METAL impellers, they will destroy your block by eating into the aluminum when the bearing goes bad. There is a reason why ALL OEM Porsche impellers are plastic. The plastic impeller is sacrificial, it breaks down when the bearing goes bad and it makes contact with the block, to protect the engine block. 2-The 71°C thermostat is OEM low temp, it is used to protect the engine from bore score .. or let’s just say delay it, as all these car will develop bore score. ALWAYS use low temp thermostat 3-Usually the car overheating is due to air in the system .. when you flushed the engine properly, the problem went away
When I replaced the water pump on my Cayman I opted for the OEM plastic impeller because if the bearing ever fails, the metal impeller will carve into your block and ruin it. That's what the boards taught me at least. Also, the low temp thermostat is used to prevent the two farthest cylinders on these flat sixes from lightly overheating on startup and promoting bore scoring over time.
The Honda crv table is so funny to me lmao, a 3.6 carrera 2 is one of my attainable dream cars so any content about these is so fun to see, looking forward to more videos in the future!
Fellow 996 owner here…. The M96 engine came with a plastic impeller water pump for a reason. They don’t damage the engine block when they fail. The metal impeller will destroy (beyond repair) the engine block if it fails (and they do fail).
Helpful hint while you’re pulling vacuum bleed the air from that line that does into the bucket full of coolant. Slowly open the fill valve until coolant reaches the bleeder. And also always close the vacuum valve and fill valve and see if she holds the vacuum for a few minutes. Not sure if you did that or not.
The low temperature (71C) thermostat is supposed to help prevent bore scoring by keeping the engine more evenly cooled. The M96 closes some coolant passages on start in order to get the coolant up to temperature more quickly (which helps with emissions iirc). Unfortunately, that can also cause uneven temps from cylinder to cylinder which can supposedly cause score in cylinders 5 and 6. The lower temperature thermostat opens those passages earlier, allowing the block and cylinders to heat for evenly. Love the content!
This makes sense, I have an LN Engineering low temp t-stat on order along with a new water pump for my M96. I live in the high desert so cooling is critical!
Las calidad de las tomas, la edición, la música, los detalles...conocí tu canal por el v70 y la verdad que te superas en cada video. Impresionante el trabajo y la dedicación. Abrazo grande y saludos desde Argentina
Man you did great! Really fixed the overheating, also added a lot of value to the car as a bonus.. Love the colour, and you did well to fit high quality parts to fix all issues. I would keep the special exhaust which came with the car. I'm not convinced deleting the suitcase mufflers is a real upgrade. Yes it's loud, raw, but lacks in sufistication. I must admit in some parts of the rev range it sounds impressive, but it would really get on my nerves in long distance driving as it's too loud inside. I think you took a gamble on the car, which worked out great! It's been cared for obviously, expensive exhaust fitted, which sounds well balanced. Nice colour, good spec 911. And now she's fixed and ready for you to enjoy. ☺
It looks like this is finally a car you're keeping along with the Volvos. I can't say enough how impressed I am with the skills and knowledge you've gained since you created this channel. Cheers, Willem! ✌
Dude I love your videos, and your builds. I find your content so refreshing to watch, since you keep the cars true to themselves and you’re not ruining them with tasteless mods. Looking forward to more content!
Been following your film channel for years and love this new content. Recently got a 1998 996 and just changed the engine mounts too - they looked like yours, worn out. Congrats on the car and keep up the great work, Willem!
@@wheelemverb I'm here for it. Square seems to be on a big kick again. Too bad you missed out on the Raid money lol. From some of the smaller creators I've talked to, it was incredible.
I had a similar project as your, ine the same time, with the v70r, but a E91 with a single turbo N54 swap 6mt. And I'm looking at a new project and the 996 was in my head since 4or5 years. If I have a chance to find one like your, it would be awesome, your video might be a sign ! who knows !
i hope you didnt forget the bleeding valve open. With the system open like this the boiling temp is 100c and you will start loosing a lot of coolant. With the system closed and under pressure the boiling temp is higher. What you should of done in the garage is close the expansion tank and open the bleeding valve just like on a regular car. Let the air out until it start flowing coolant and close it and them go for a drive :P
6:31 thats just contact corrosion of unsimilar metals. Galvanized steel bolts threaded into aluminium. They can often seize because of that, so be sure to apply anti seize in situations like this

Great content. I have the same issue on my 986 2.5L. It's running at 103-105 Celsius. Planning to replace the thermostat soon. Maybe I also have a 71 instead of the original one... Will check the sensors too.
the thermostat is upgrade that most 996 and 997 owners do to help prevent borescoring. i have it done to my 997 C2S. it def takes long to get oil temps up to normal but water temp isn't that bad
Used to have a 986, lovely car, but the "having to take off the rear bumper, exhaust, a tire, etc, to do basic maintenance" got a little old. With that said, I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.
You're not only a fantastic photographer, you're also a car guy who makes fantastic videos. Extra fun that you have a Volvo (I'm from Sweden) and also a 911, the world's most fantastic car. You do an amazing job, and I love your amazing photos and you are a great source of inspiration. 🤩👍
I was worried for a second as it didn't look like there was a gasket on the new water pump. Probably an oring design or maybe i missed it. Great content, appreciate that you dont do a million cuts and also let us hear a full pull exhaust. Can we get a 1-2-3-4 pull or something like that? bang some gears. I wanna hear the limiter.
great video , in my experience in driving European cars now for over 43 years now most brands use a higher degree thermostat than north American vehicles , like my different Volvos run 89 or 91 degree thermostats, OEM parts are usually a better fit, the plastic impeller water pump i have heard not many good things about them, we know metal impellers stand up to the high temps better than the plastic ones do and the modern water pumps now with the o ring design are less prone to leaking also, I just changed a leaking pump on a Golf Mark 4 2 litre engine and found out the pump was fine just needed a new o ring seal so we got to return the pump, the car sounds incredible on those 3rd gear pulls, epic 👍
hey! perfect car! Two things I would consider if it was my car! the first is to remove those ugle black bumper stops from the back. Those kill the whole vibe of the car. Than adding some very light wheel spacers to just make the car a little bit more agressive. Everything else is great! good job
Instantly fell in love when i saw this car. I did cringe when he did the muffler delete though, it sounded perfect with that baller aftermarket exhaust! Too loud now and doesn’t sound as refined, you can also tell while driving some extra drone was introduced with this exhaust mod.

I’d much rather replace a metal water pump every 80k miles than do a plastic one every 40k.
The metal impeller does not fail.
@@ginco_bnz why not just replace the impeller instead of the whole damp pump?
@@giovannifoulmouth7205it’s NOT the impeller that fails, it’s the bearing
metal can eat at the block when the bearing goes, plastic can break and clog passages. choose your poison
