Thanks for this superb and spot on layer mask tutorial. I learnt a great deal from it. You are the best and God bless endlessly. PS: Welcome back once again from your needed hiatus 😁. I hope to see more of your fantastic and jaw dropping tutorials this 2022 and forever.
Nathaniel!!!!! Yes! Your tutorials have helped me in so many ways for so many years. I can't tell you how absolutely ecstatic I feel seeing new content. Thanks for all your hard work!
Man oh man. What a wonderful quality this video has! I wish all the tutorials was this good on UA-cam. It's a crime that we didn't't have you on UA-cam for years man
Nathaniel whenever I get lost I always refer to your lessons and magically I'm transformed to looking like a pro again . Thanks ever so, keep up the great work
Thank you for explaining masks so clearly. Your analogy of a black ski mask- that made it finally click for me, even after watching numerous tutorials on masking. That’s how I’m going to think of masking, inverting, black/white brushes from now on.
I used to be alone and afraid in the photoshop world. Then Nate came along and mentored me. I'm a photoshop hero now. I'm a masked man 😁👍 Welcome back sensei !
welcome back... Love your work- glad to be learning with you again. You have opened my eyes with masks and cant wait to start using them this way in my work.
thx! I am curios though if the new Photoshop makes masks in certain situations irrelevant. You could simple choose where you want clouds click "generative fill" and have 3 options asap
The absolute best example of masking was the actual description of a Mask. I've been working with masks in an off for a few months and that description was an ah-ha moment for me.
Thanks, that was very informative. I still have the old CS4, so I'll have to do without some of the cooler newer features, but the basic concept of the masks remains, so I'll give that a go. SoonTM.
Thank you so much for this nice and very helpfull tutorial, but can you help me with a problem I have??? I'm doing everything as I'm watching on video, but the selection '' Load selection'' is always inactive. Any idea why does this happen? Thanks in advance!!!! Glad to see you back 😊
You have to create a selection, right-click that selection and choose to "Save Selection", give it a name and save it. Once you have a selection saved you will be able to use "Load Selection" to load the selection you saved. Hope that helps!
Nate, I have a question and a video request. Since the last series of PS updates, I have had to re-enable the "Use Gpu" setting. The problem with that is it takes forever to load large files. If I disable that setting now, my pen tool, resize handles and other features change to those grey, matching ants style visual and I can't resize or use the pen tool to draw paths. I know many people are having the same issue and Adobe just doesn't seem to address it at all. Do you have a solution to this and if so can you please make a video about it? Thanks very much 😊
I have a question I hope someone can help me with please. Let's say I have an image that that is 680 by 544 pixels and I want to increase the image keeping that same proportion. Is there some type of calculator for this? I found an image with those dimensions and I want to increase it but I want to keep that same proportion have no idea how to do this.
Sorry, it's disappointing. Video at 2:01, suddenly a blue color filled the orange color by masking. It should have been showed how that masking is created in a new layer. You went direct to there without showing commands.
Nice intro but if play from 1:00 to 2:15 and look at what you say with beginner goggles you will see that it's NOT for beginners. sorry but you need to rename your tutorial . Bye.
Probably shouldve included how to create a selection. Its the whole point of watching the video, how to mask. All youre doing is applying it and not showing the full process on how to do it
What a frustratingly annoying video. You spent half an hour talking about colors and how to change the areas covered by the mask, but you spent ZERO seconds explaining how to change which area the mask is covering. HOW DO I CHANGE WHICH SECTION OF THE IMAGE THE MASK IS COVERING?
Hey! Glad to see you making content again! You're one of the few people who got me started with art/illustration back when you had your own site, so... hey, it's good to see you back here again!
Glad to see you back and making vids. One thing I've made a habit of is softening the edges of the mask. But first contract your mask by a pixel or so, so it bites into your subject There are a few ways to do this. 1) Under Filters panel, apply a lite blur to the entire mask. Be sure to zoom in to a edge first so you can fine tune the blur to your needs. 2) Convert the layer (or folder) to a Smart Object and then add your mask and apply your filter. This way you have the option to go back and adjust it at any time. 3) For most of my projects, I simply zoom in to the mask's edges and manually apply the blur with the Blur tool. Adjusting it's size, fall-off, and strength as I go. Doing the above helps the masked item blend into overall image better. It needs to be noted that Layer Folders can also have masks applied to them. And there's also the Clip-Mask feature. This allows you to use the layer below it as a mask. And clip-masked layers can stack. However, you can not apply a vlip-mask to a folder layer. And clip-masks do not have the same options as normal masks. But combining the many masks options does open up a lot of opportunities. And then there are the Vector Masks that can be applied to a layer that already has a traditional mask. Working in school photography, I use all kids of masks in my editing. Makes for MUCH smoother work when I'm not worrying about possible careless mistakes. I'm looking at you Eraser Tool, that I've not touched in literally years.
OMG! Glad to see you back again. You were the one whose video motivated me towards Illustrator and Photoshop and towards the Graphics Design space. Now I work for a Agency. Lots of love. 🇳🇵

Fantastic!
Oh woohoo! You really helped “unmask” the mystery of photoshop masking and layers! Seriously though you’re a really great teacher!!! 😁
Thank you for explaining masks so clearly. Your analogy of a black ski mask- that made it finally click for me, even after watching numerous tutorials on masking. That’s how I’m going to think of masking, inverting, black/white brushes from now on.
That’s a great tutorial Nathaniel. No loud music, no shouting. And you don’t say ‘What’s up guys’ at the start!
I used to be alone and afraid in the photoshop world. Then Nate came along and mentored me. I'm a photoshop hero now.
I'm a masked man 😁👍

Wish you show how to "load the selection."

Thank you so much. Yes I do know how masks work but like it's not intuitive to me? So Thank you
Great video but far from basic. I need to look at earlier videos. Appreciate the content. Thank you.
Im still using clone, erase etc im a slow learner in PS It hasn't click yet.
sotNice tutorialng in the soft roll and the soft outgrows the length of the step sequencer. it's not obvious how to "shrink" the soft rolled
welcome to 2022!

Orange = Green
after soft soft).
4:40 "voila we have a blue and a green train"... No you don't... 😋
Sorry, it's disappointing. Video at 2:01, suddenly a blue color filled the orange color by masking. It should have been showed how that masking is created in a new layer. You went direct to there without showing commands.
anyone count how many times he said mask? I lost count lol
Nice intro but if play from 1:00 to 2:15 and look at what you say with beginner goggles you will see that it's NOT for beginners. sorry but you need to rename your tutorial . Bye.
You didnt say ' and without further ado....'
nice bro
Probably shouldve included how to create a selection. Its the whole point of watching the video, how to mask. All youre doing is applying it and not showing the full process on how to do it
Quit this in 2 mins because not explaining "I'm just going to load this train color channel" becomes just a slight-of-hand magic trick.
"Beginner's Guide" .... "Train Color Channel" ... ???
TNice tutorials is a terrible turorial. He plows through info at a speed that doesn’t allow you to follow, or actually absorb anytNice tutorialng.
