Imagine getting teachers like him in school. That was just expertly taught, I've never seen anyone explain the intricacies of masks so well. Amazing job sir!
Thank you, Colin, I am an 84-year-old beginner I love photoshop and I have always had trouble with layer masks the way you explained it made it easier to understand the way layer masks works I look forward to your photoshop basics.
I have used PS for ages but only as an adjunct to photography. I could never “get” layers. Thank you, Colin, so much for this. I was always too embarrassed to admit my dyslexia with layer masks.
84 years old wow i feel like i'm gonna cry now i'm 21 years old and was saying that photoshop is hard and complicated i can't learn .. but now i'm motivated .. thank you sir i wish you a great day and life ❤️
I'm an illustrator and though not a beginner with Photoshop, I've not used masks at all so far. Having checked out a few tutorials on the subject, yours stands out head and shoulders above the others for its clarity and excellent teaching. Thankyou so much for taking the time! Now I want to see all of your tutorials!!
Ha! Same here. Far from new to photoshop but never really messed with masks until jumping into making t shirt designs recently. Definitely a well done, easy to grasp tutorial.
Thanks Colin, for sure the most difficult element to get my head around. Watching other "tutorials" made it more confusing. So far, this has been the easiest and most concise tutorial yet, of course, I will keep this in my save file as I am sure I will need to keep watching it. But I know once I am more clear on this, the rest has to be easier. Thanks again!
That was so easy to follow and understand. Nothing extraneous and just the right pace to follow and retain the skills you're teaching. Thank you Colin for producing these great tutorials to make Photoshop accessible to all of us.
Excellent basic tutorial. I’ve been using PS for 6-7 years just to make custom, single fold note cards with photo images on the card face. Most cards require little or no image manipulation and as a consequence I’ve never used layer masks. I’m now finding myself doing more image isolation and have reasoned that layer masks can be a very useful tool. In that regard your tutorial has been a big help. Thank you (and I’ve subscribed). - Jim (74, Mississippi)
I have struggled to understand layer masks and watched a number of tutorials. YOU are a gifted instructor. I understood from the get-go and am thrilled to finally be able to use layer masks. Can't thank you enough.
Thanks a million after messing with my brains for the past 3 years I've actually got a grasp of Masks in PS due to the way you described it in great depth but in a simple manner. Please continue with this beginners tutorial as I've been actually intimidated to open PS in case I mess up which I always did till NOW, so a huge 👍up to you.
Colin, you have made the understanding of masks so much easier! My other half and I have a photography business (very small) and love compositing - I am sure that this tutorial is going to help us make our images even better. Thank you!
how can i masking picture layer depends on the shape on the layer below it? eg: below the picture layer got 2 layer. 1 layer is square, 2nd layer is triangle if i choose square layer, so the picture will cut/masked automatic in square shape. It is possible to do like that?🤔🤔🤔
Thanks for all the tutorials. Layers and layer masks I have used for years, mostly when sharpening photos... But I learn something new today ... Thanks from Norway.
I’ve been using photoshop for over 15 years through trial and error. I’ve always avoided learning layer masks for some reason, but I really should’ve learned all this stuff long before! Great video!! Super helpful! :D
In 8th grade, I struggled with algebra. My oldest brother, with degrees in mathematics and physics tried to help me. He did not. Despite EXPERT knowledge he could not teach me the concepts. You sir are an EXPERT teacher! Thank-you so much for teaching this in such an easy to follow and understand way! I"m a 20 year photoshop enthusiast, never mastered masks (i'd use all manner of layers and varying opacity/size/hardness brushes to get acceptable results). I shoulda mastered this a LONG time ago--woulda saved 100's of hours and provided much better results!
Good video! I've been using ON1, but I had a lot of problems with it, so now I'm learning Photoshop. It's a lot more complicated and not too intuitive. So, I appreciate your explaining eveerything.
Colin, you're the best. I hope you're doing well. Thank you so much for these enthusiastic lessons on Photoshop. I've liked and subscribed and shared too
For beginners, layer masks in Photoshop are revolutionary. They provide the precise hiding and revealing of certain layers, which facilitates the blending of images and the application of focused modifications. It's an essential ability to have if you want to make neat, polished edits.
Thank you - I needed this super basic tutorial, that I can easily follow along with. (After about 20 years of self-taught photoshop dabbling, whilst avoiding masks altogether!)
This was great and very easy to follow. I did have an issue with you already beginning with two layers. It would be great if you explained how to bring a file in from your computer as the second layer. After watching your video, I did this and was unable to get it to work correctly. It worked the exact opposite of what it was supposed to do. Brought in second file and both colors showed on screen at the same time. It wouldn't allow painting, but it did allow eraser, but that only allowed erasing where I didn't need it erased...ugh! Can't figure out where I went wrong...however, I was able to get it work in a backwards manner because due to your video I understood both the layers and the masks and after playing around, I ended up erasing around the figure in the dark until I hit the figure and then just went back in and used the clone tool to recolor the edges I had erased. So thanks without your video, I would have been stuck!
Thank you! I learned this in school but that was 10 years ago and been getting by in photoshop and wanted to be reminded on masks. Super helpful and I subscribed and want to watch more of your content.
Having used Photoshop for many years I am still learning from Colin he is just the best teacher on UA-cam...and beyond! I was just looking for videos for people new to Photoshop layer masks and ended up watching the whole video again.
Crystal clear explanations and tuition, great pace, exactly what I need being an aged technophobe getting to grips with PS, couldn't really ask for more. Much appreciated.
It takes a Special kind of person to be a Teacher! Your explanations are to the point and very understandable! You are quite thorough and just pleasant to learn from! Thank you for turning your Special talents to Teaching!!! Much Appreciated! I get so much more from your tutorials than I do In college course Photoshop! Wonderful!!!
Hello, I'm a new subscriber. My name is John and I'm new to photoshop. Your video and explanations were excellent and extremely easy to follow. Thank you very much.
Many thanks Colin. This was a great video that showed not only the basic layer mask feature but very useful features for making adjustments to the picture.
Hi, I have ADHD and like what you did but was struggling to follow wha steps you actually did. The effect I want to do is the one where you paint over the woman's face and the tiger appears. Are you able to give me an outline of the steps you did, or might you know where I can find the steps to do that. I've spent the last 2 hours working with an AI assistant but getting nowhere.
Thank God for people like you! In half hour you've explained and made sense of what I've spent hours trying to understand from official Adobe tutorials. I learned lots from this tutorial!
I have always been very confused with layer masks and working non-destructive, but this tutorial made it so easy to understand it. Thanks for the Easy and slow introduction to Layer Masks and the many ways to use them.
Incredible video!!!! Thank you so much for sharing this knowledge! I was able to create my first Photoshop image by following your video! I love what I created! Thank you so much! I've only been using Photoshop 2 days and I'm hooked!
I'm a bit late to the party, but, THANK YOU! I have been searching for someone to teach me things on photoshop properly, not just a wham-bang, hit this then that... I had been getting so frustrated with myself and re-doing things over and over because i simply can't understand other videos. THIS was amazing and so easy to follow. I will definitely be checking out your other beginners guide.. Keep it up. Thanks again!
Thanks Colin - I have learned more about layer masks from your video than ever before. And that includes some well-known on-line instructors. An Aussie praising a Kiwi. Unheard of. lol.
Excellent, thank you. Can you just clarify how you save it when you arrive at a completion point? Do you flatten? Or when you flatten does it all disappear? That is where I am lost. Thanks so much, super helpful.
At 67, with just about zero tech knowledge, I'm sure after watching this a few times, I might get the hang of things. Being colourblind, does not make it easier with any photo editing programs.
Thanks very much, I have been struggling with this stuff, finally I found the right tutorial, and made me realise the errors I had been making, so did a successful photo using all your steps exactly along the way, fantastic! thankyou, and will be looking for the next step very soon. re Linden
Excellent tutorial. thanks. please add chapters. it is very easy just add timestamp in the description but VERY IMPORTANT to start with 00:00 Introduction and then 8:00 Inverted mask and so forth. I used not add the 00::00 and it was not working on my video. chapters is great help to do watch certain part of the video again. thanks
Hi Colin, I've listened to your video several times on layer masks. and I must be missing something. When I paint black over the mask, the areas I've covered don't disappear. I can see the layer below but it is as if I am looking through a kind of screen. If I use gray, the results are similar. After two days of trying to figure out what I am doing wrong. I am stymied. Hope you can help. Thanks Larry Specht
