The R5c will be the perfect upgrade to shooting more video and all the 8k features make this camera future proof. Just checked your website I'm not able to pre-order it yet. One thing I hope they add is 8K and 6K CLog 3 options instead of just shooting in raw. 1080 or 2K at 240FPS would be nice as well. But none the less this is all I want
Oh great. It makes a lot of sense to take the IBIS out of a camera and charge C prices for it! C of course stands for clueless! I’m so glad I switched to Sony a few years ago. My Alpha 1 is awesome! This does nothing important more. Unless you need 8K60RAW! I much more prefer a1’s compressed 8K. Much easier to handle.
True “cinema cameras” (arri/red/Panavision/etc.) actually don’t have or need ibis. The best practice is always to stabilize the entire rig. Ibis is a convenience in the absence of that ability but never a go-to solution for actual cinema shoots.
Many of the features seem pretty decent on paper but the need to run an external power source for 8k60p and the 1/1 memory card slots, no external ssd options, no ibis, clunky form factor with the cooling fan seemingly slapped on the back... I don't know why but in a sense this camera seems rushed. You can't easily operate this camera at full capacity on the go without the need for an external power source and either a gimbal or tripod. Sadly I think they missed the mark on a few key points.
No full sized HDMI… no IBIS… the 8k60 is cool, but I would much rather have a full sized HDMI with the ability to push 8K raw and 4k120 to an external monitor like my Ninja V+. I feel like Canon missed the mark here.
@@germancreatives88 The R5 records internal raw too... but you know what it DOESN'T do? Record internal raw to an SSD.... Ninja V+ records ProRes Raw, which is incredibly easy to edit in Premiere... Canon's Raw? Not so much.

Important thing for is timecode. I don't see a timecode port on the body which means it must be the hot shoe. With the XLR adapter mounted we're back to striping timecode on an audio track. Seems a bit weird for a "cinema" camera not to have timecode in.
Wow! They somehow managed to make one camera that can do stills and motion with a simple switch... Instead of making one designed for stills and one designed for motion and doubling sales... Such innovation. But seriously, what a lovely monster!
great review! How long could I expect to shoot with this camera on one battery in 4k 24 and 60p in a run and gun scenario shooting clips ranging from 10-30 seconds each?
Battery duration is highly contingent on how the camera is being used. How much zooming one does, how much auto focusing, etc. And yes, shooting in different formats and frame rates will also affect how long a battery will last. You ae looking at less than 1 hour. Most likely about 40-45 minutes maximum. >Mark
gotcha! I ended up getting an r5c, been good so far, but yeah the battery drains very fast in video that's for sure. I've also gotten a bug I think. It says in shooting mode that it is 250 mins left, but I think that has bugged with what it says when clicking media. Have you gotten this?@@BandH
Damn the delay when you switch from photo to video and back is forever! As a hybrid shooter I often switch back and forth between both and A1 is quick. I still think camera should shoot stills when shutter button is pressed or use video settings from video mode when video button is pressed. On A1 I am shooting slog3 and hate that it doesn't use slog3 in video settings when I press video button in stills mode.
For your specific need just get A1 or R5, this camera is a true hybrid because it gives you both everything, a true cinema camera and a true photo camera. Your focus sounds like U just need a photo camera that can shoot video also, and for that case A1 as you suggested will do the trick.
In typical Canon-style: "Much ado about nothing." Big deal here seems to be that there is a MODE SWITCH, you can go from photo to video ad back. So, you can now either shoot photos or video -- but not both without switching between them. Hmmm..... That would be worth how much extra over the regular R5? And seriously -- a whopping 45 MP sensor -- for shooting video? Heck, even 8K only requires 33 MP. For interfaces -- 3.5 mm audio jacks, micro-HDMI for video. Sort of smart phone types. SD card slot -- seriously, Canon? In a "cinema camera?" Maybe you guys should look around what your competition is delivering. On the plus side, the recording codecs are nice. Overall, I think I'll wait for the next "cinema camera" from Canon.
Unfortunately a step backwards. When setting the various programs, you now have to use the same button twice. And everything is cheaper to produce than 2 turning wheels. Amazing how you can catch people with something like that. The vehicles have the same problem. No more knobs and switches. Otherwise a good camera.

The Canon EOS R5 C does have a 3×2 sensor so it will be great if Canon moves forward with implementing an “open gate” filming option in this camera. The current anamorphic recording mode is using a 17×9 portion of the sensor, resulting in a (much too wide for my taste) 2.8:1 aspect ratio.

Enter "run and gun" b-roll shooting for corporate, weddings, documentary, etc. Lots of times when IBIS is the difference between getting the shot (or gig) or not. This camera has a place in the universe, but not having IBIS leaves a huge hole of places it could have gone… but now cannot. Bummed.
@@nigerian-nightmare You know nothing john snow. The camera is limited to that DR because of the log formats, it has almost 15 stops in photo raw. Look up how canon log works and what DR they say each version is good for. Also test shooting in raw with clog 1 viewer vs clog 3. It shouldn't matter in raw, but you get more DR shooting in clog 3 with raw, clog 2 would make it way better. Canon is working around REDs internal RAW patents, which is obvious from what I mentioned.
@@TJ-po9ol You are clueless. We are talking about video. Where in the world did you get your info that R5C has 15 stops of dynamic range. Only a fool would want to use clog2 on R5C. If R5C has 15stops, then C70 has 20stops. You're misinformed. You think you know better than Canon.
@@TJ-po9ol What does photo raw have to do with clog2 doofus? How do you get 13 stops from a camera that can only manage 11 stops of dynamic range? As I said, you are clueless and ignorant of the fact. Putting clog2 on any camera with 11 stops of dynamic range like Canon R5C will not give that camera a more dynamic range. It doesn't work that way. You can't give what you don't have. Clog2 was explicitly designed for cameras like C70 with about 15 to 16 stops of dynamic range. The clog2 will not make any sense in Canon R5C. That's why Canon never bothered putting in R5 or R5c. Get in your head.

Nothing will convince me to buy this until several reviews have come out about overheating (or lack of). Canon screwed people with their R5 and R6. They knew about the overheating, and had people paying over 3k/4k for cameras that couldn't be used properly.
Seriously Doug, you're a good explainer and you provide good vocal info about the products you promote, but, and this is a huge "but", every time I see the image coming from a camera you use and the footage you share I don't want to buy the thing. Disappointed in that it has no IBIS also on how long it takes to switch from video to photo. 8 secs!!! Really!!! The subject has come and gone. They crippled another one boys!!!
No IBIS, 8K 60p with an external power supply?, no internal Prores RAW, prehistoric fans to cool the camera (the tiny Sigma FP beats it to a pulp) , no full HDMI, up to 10 seconds waiting time before filming starts. No, it's not an amazing camera, it's a yesterday camera. Hail Nikon Z9.
Amen. Nikon Z9, and don't forget the Panasonic Lumix FF models also. I am not into the Sonys because they use the much slower Type A CFexpress cards. Maybe Blackmagic has got something new in the oven also? For now, it has to be wither Nikon Z9 or Panasonic Lumix for FF.
nope, why canon falls short every time just missing little things to make it a workhorse ibis and SDI or at least full HDMI missing for 0 reasons. Moving away from canon because of this. no reason to not have log 2 either and maybe get a bigger battery lol so you don't need to fiddle around to change recording on the fly (sigh) Coming from a full canon user its a big deal. LOL!! OMG.. if you want to shoot in 8K 60 FPS, you must PLUG THE CAMERA IN !!! I'm dying... What a joke !! CANON.. you should have waited until you could make a camera that actually works before releasing it. LOL!!
Sony is gonna kill Canon. Canon just keeps acting like they can do anything and get away with it because of brand recognition. Good luck with that. No backup recording. No IBIS. Requiring extra power for just autofocus in the higher modes! And not to mention Canon Raw having no small file size version like Blackmagic Raw. Those who want cinema camera quality will go to Red and Arri and BMD, while those who want IBIS and cinema-like quality will go to Panasonic and Sony. Good riddance, Canon.
NO IBIS ?? How is this an upgrade ?? Idiots.. I am done. Next camera I get will be a Sony. Canon has missed the boat AGAIN. I love my R6, probably the best camera they make. I was interested in a high Rez camera (still & video) that can shoot without a record limit, but no IBIS is a no go for me. I love how companies think putting something BACK that they removed years ago is an upgrade too.. the easy one button/knob switch between photo and video that was on the 5D MK2-4 that was stupidly removed when the R came out, now it's back and 'new' .
I bought a C70 hoping it would be the perfect all-in-one handheld/gimbal cine camera. In reality, it's a little too heavy for me to use for long periods handheld and a little too clunky to easily/reliably balance on my RS2. The autofocus underperforms as well. Other than that, it's a fantastic camera. The R5C solves the C70's size problem at the expense of the ND filters and XLR ports. I despise the micro, yes MICRO!!!, HDMI (which should be illegal), but being able to get excellent video and photos in one camera is more important since this would be my B camera and the C70 my A camera. Does anyone know if there is a hot shoe wireless lav receiver that would work with this? That's what I use with my Sony A7R3 and it's nice and compact. I also wonder about the dynamic range on the video end, if it improved at all. I'm assuming not since it's probably the identical sensor. All the camera companies keep inching toward the perfect hybrid camera. Nobody's nailed it yet, but I'll keep hoping!
"Perfect hybrid cameras?" Well, other than the smart phones, I sort of doubt there is anything like that. As for this new EOS R5C -- it has one great feature, the codec. For the rest -- not so much. There is no way on Earth I would be spending USD $4,500 for this body. Check out the latest FF offerings from Panasonic, Nikon, Sony. Dual CFexpress card slots, for starters. In other words -- professional media.

This camera has a place in the universe, but not having IBIS leaves a huge hole of places it could have gone… but now cannot. Bummed.
Has anyone commented on the active cooling? There's a fan in there, right? What does that sound like when shooting video on an 80* day?
The internal fan noise is negligible and not picked up on any recordings. >Mark
Should have had internal NDs, IBIS toggle. Without Clog 2, no deal.
Why would you want Clog-2 on a camera that can only manage 11stops of dynamic range. It makes no sense. Clog3 is perfect for R5C.
@@nigerian-nightmare I said photo raw doofus. Canon hybrids are limited by not having clog2, you can’t get 13 stops without clog2.
So you can record longer then 30 mins?
Correct!. The only limits to recording are the size of the memory card and/or the runtime of the battery. >Mark
@@BandH Oooh thank you PODCAST & Interviews here we come!
I mean, no animal eye AF in video I can understand because it hasn't made its way to the cine OS yet... Removal of IBIS, okay, well, I don't like it but I guess I understand. The power delivery issues, however, are unacceptable.
Canon couldn’t fix ibis wobble so they took the ibis out and said you don’t need it! 😕
Still love my Sony A7S III MORE
R5c less max: ISO 51,200 🤦🏻♂️
not for photo and no internal raw 8k
@@germancreatives88 R5C for cinema camera still using micro HDMI, no IBIS, no internal ND Filters, not using their cinema DGO (Dual Gain Output) sensor, not weather sealed, bulky, horrible codecs, you'll need a supercomputer to edit those 8k footage either raw or whatever form they offer, plain horrible, same as R5 but with a fan for $700 more.
Disappointing to see there is no IBIS on this Camera.
No IBIS?! 😢
No IBIS means Im not giving my money to Canon. Such a waste of a "hybrid camera" I think I might have to switch over to sony. They listen to their consumers. SMH
can it record 2k120fps? and for how long?
DCI 2K (2048 x 1080) at 23.98p/24.00p/25p/29.97p/50p/59.94p [35 to 50 Mb/s] up to the capacity of the memory card >Mark
so it cant record in 2k120fps?
Nothing will convince me to buy this until several reviews have come out about overheating (or lack of). Canon screwed people with their R5 and R6. They knew about the overheating, and had people paying over 3k/4k for cameras that couldn't be used properly.
Wrong, the C stands for Crimped, Canon R5Crimped.
Are you sure canon's dummey battery support autofocus when 8k 60p??? Why can USA says no to me lol
Seriously Doug, you're a good explainer and you provide good vocal info about the products you promote, but, and this is a huge "but", every time I see the image coming from a camera you use and the footage you share I don't want to buy the thing. I don't know how but you're able to get the worst image possible from cameras that should be amazing. Please, take your time to get the footage correctly, grade it and then show it. Sorry for my sincerity, y intention isn't to hurt your feelings. I think you're a good marketeer, you can do better.
Can't wait to buy this camera in 2070 for $300
Disappointed in that it has no IBIS also on how long it takes to switch from video to photo. 8 secs!!! Really!!! The subject has come and gone. They crippled another one boys!!!
no bluetooth for Canon R 5C
Over heating 🔥🔥?
No more overheating. The new active cooling solved that, but at the expense of IBIS.
Why would you need 60 fps RAW? Sheeeeeeeeeeiit..
60 fps is a very popular speed for music video shooters. I use it all the time on my C200.
@@FrontmanVideo thought they were talking still photos
By hand with no isis is crazy! Lol
Supplemental power requirement for full spec = DEALBREAKER.
nope, why canon falls short every time just missing little things to make it a workhorse ibis and SDI or at least full HDMI missing for 0 reasons. Moving away from canon because of this. no reason to not have log 2 either and maybe get a bigger battery lol so you don't need to fiddle around to change recording on the fly (sigh) Coming from a full canon user its a big deal. Your losing people :( Trying to sell it as two cameras in one ... sorta insulting.... these days they ALL are. 🤦♀
All this for $1,500 USD? Awesome.
lmao every other comment is about can it shoot at 60fps or 120fps at this resolution. You guys are clowns. Slow-motion and pixels are all you know.
No IBIS no full HDMI. Deal killers for me. Don’t need or care for anything beyond 4K.
Your needs undoubtedly are of the mediocre
LOL!! OMG.. if you want to shoot in 8K 60 FPS, you must PLUG THE CAMERA IN !!! I'm dying... What a joke !! CANON.. you should have waited until you could make a camera that actually works before releasing it. LOL!!
R5c less max: ISO 51,200 🤦🏻♂️
Sony is gonna kill Canon. Canon just keeps acting like they can do anything and get away with it because of brand recognition. Good luck with that. No backup recording. No IBIS. Requiring extra power for just autofocus in the higher modes! And not to mention Canon Raw having no small file size version like Blackmagic Raw. Those who want cinema camera quality will go to Red and Arri and BMD, while those who want IBIS and cinema-like quality will go to Panasonic and Sony. Good riddance, Canon.
Camera I've been waiting for? Nope.
You gotta get into the Canon mindset: "They won't notice."
@@frankfarago2825 Yeah, I hear you. If I wasn't so invested in Canon glass, I'd probably get an A7S3. The Canon lenses I've used on my A7R3 are almost unusable as far as autofocus, so I'm not optimistic they'd work much better on the S3 or other cameras that aren't Canon.
That music just doesn’t fit. It bout put me to sleep. Couldn’t finish it at all but thumbed up because of the presentation. Music sounds like motivation music for weight loss.
