    Great review Gordon! So, it appears we now have two cameras for two types of hybrid shooters. One is primarily for photographers who sometimes shoot video (R5), and the other is primarily for videographers who sometimes shoot stills (R5C). That segmentation is driven mostly - IMO - by the lack of IBIS. Otherwise, I could have completely replaced my R5 with the R5C.

    Thanks for the review Gordon! Does the menu system offer control over the fans in Photo mode or only Video? My use case is for long-exposure astrophotography. It would be nice to be able to cool down the camera sensor, esp. during the summer months where thermal noise can be an issue.

    • @cameralabs

      Now that's a great idea! The fan doesn't operate in photo mode and there's no menu for them as they assume no-one would want it, but I wonder if it would be beneficial for this application?

      @@vaskoobscura_ Depends on the fan, and how it is mounted. Dedicated astronomy cameras all use fans in their peltier cooler designs and are able to avoid vibration problems. Ugh. Or perhaps, as an R5 owner, I should thank Canon for saving me $4,500. No IBIS is a deal killer for someone like me who loves a minimal, hand-held experience. The electronic stabilization retains micro-jitters as did my original EOS-R... I never used it. As for stills, once I received my R5, I never used the original EOS R again--it's really nice to not worry about motion blur with somewhat lower shutter speeds in the 1/15 and 1/30 range, even 1/60th at times. And I don't buy the overheating excuse as the Lumix S1h is very similar in design (cooling system) and has been reported to never overheat even in the worst of conditions (Dan Watson's channel and others). And then, no mention of Clog2... (firmware update in the future?). But this is a cool design (oops, unintended pun).

For years I've been wondering why they can't just make a camera that's between the crippled stills cameras with video and the high end cinema cameras, with a price that it's worth it for them to potentially lose out on a handful of sales of cinema cameras. I thought this was finally it, the robust video camera for the run and gun, one man band shooter. How hard is it to make an R5, with ALL the R5 features that won't overheat.... They've added a fan, but removed the better AF and the "heat creating' IBIS... What's the fan doing because realistically this should run cooler than an R5 without it! They're missing out on thousands of sales from 10 a penny shooters like me. Rant Over :D

    As always, excellent work Gordon! I've been in search of the 'perfect' hybrid for years now, this Canon R5c might just be it! I was positive my perfect hybrid was a self made myth up until Sony released the A1. I already owned the R5 and C70 at this point keep in mind. I picked up the A1 and FX3, A7S3 with mindset of switching ecosystems due largely to 4k and 8K with no overheating. Admittedly, my own assumptions here were my an expensive lesson. I assumed Sony would play nice with Atomos. It does up to 4k 60p, anything above that, not an option as Sony doesn't output 8K via HDMI like Canon does with the R5.
    So with my Canon R5 I was able to use my Atomos Ninja V+ to extend all options the R5 offered. With Sony, I was held back to in camera because Sony has yet to unlock the HDMI out (for 8K) for Atomos or other external options. They did the same thing locking down 4k 120p out in the A7S3 and FX3 as well so again, no Atomos Ninja V+ options. It would seem Sony wants to keep things in camera. Nice way of upselling the Sony tough line of CFexpress cards I guess?
    So now on my gear shelf, I've expanded to include the R3 for other work along side my R5, C70 and R. The Sony Shelf has the A1, FX3, A7S3 but I feel that Sony's days may be numbered with me as I have been reaching time and time again for the Canon equipment purely out of compatibility in most cases. I had a deposit in place for the R5C from about four or five months ago when rumours started swirling about it so come March 15th, I'll have one and hopefully... I can stop overlapping gear. Probably not, but hopefully. lol 👍😂
    A couple questions - 1) the R5c's 8K RAW out, that isn't the same ProRES Raw as found in the R5 is it? 2) Do you think the new RF 5.2 dual fisheye lens will work on this camera offering the ability to shoot 8k 60p (when attached externally for power) VR?
    Again, many thanks for your expertise and testing!

    • @ourbellalife
      @ourbellalife 2 роки тому

      Gordon, I looked into the two questions I asked you and Canon themselves on the official support page for the R5C answer both of these questions. Yes, 8K Raw out via HDMI is ProRES Raw if used with the Atomos Ninja V+ (8K is only compatible with Ninja V+ where as 4K ProRes is with regular Ninja) and yes, the 5.2 Canon VR Lens works with the R5C. 👍🔥

    Gordon Lanig does among the best reviews on UA-cam in a fair and balanced way, and he has done so for years. This unlike clickbait places which have devolved such as "Tony and Chelsea" who now run in maximum clickbait mode, and Fro, who now aging and still stuck with a Fro, must appeal to showmanship and hype and sniffing equipment, like some camera porn maven. So, in a shitstorm of a world of formerly half-assed UA-cam reviews, now gone fully-assed Mr. Laing continues along in presenting quality information. I'm a bit sad about the no ND filter or the rolling shutter still being pretty bad to be honest and I REALLY hope they'll push the eye AF for animals in a firmware update in video mode cos that's really crap..

    Would the target audience really turn off IBIS? Bearing in mind that on the original R5 this would also turn off lens stabilisation. Quite possibly the real reason is that in order to conduct heat away from the sensor (although not the only component generating heat) it must be thermally, physically connected to a heat sink, which would make IBIS very much more difficult.

    • @alexmainwaring
      @alexmainwaring 2 роки тому

      Could this in theory solve the wobble issue on wider angles? For example if I use RF 15-35mm 2.8 IS with R5 I will get wobble on wide end due to IBIS and can’t have lens IS on by itself. Whereas with the R5c, there would be no wobble on wide end since you would only be using the IS from the lens?

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  2 роки тому +1

      I think we're both right! I agree the heatsink may have made IBIS difficult or impossible, but also that the target audience do normally film with gimbals or stands. And as Alex commented here, IBIS is great for still photos, but can result in undesirable warping on video especially with wide lenses, so not having it may be seen as a benefit to videographers.

      A lot of video shooters who work on sets don't want the sensor to be moving. It adds a margin of error. Nothing worse than an expensive take that gets ruined by IBIS wobble or jerkiness. Same reason why cameras like the GH5s had IBIS removed. Also same reason why none of the cine cams by major brands have stabilization. Directors and DoPs prefer ultimate levels of control over everything.

So many of the cameras released in the last 2 years are outstanding photo cameras but were taking down a notch because of some issue shooting video. I shoot Sony(A9)and smile every time some youtuber whines about no picture profiles for video, I would have been very happy to shoot with a Canon R6 but folks went on about 30 min record limit and an occasional overheat in video. I am happy to see a camera like the R5C because as video resolutions become so high companies will have to make more dedicated video centric cameras and leave us photographers alone, 1 more thing FLIP SCREENS are better than articulating screens with 600mm lenses 🤣, yes I know I am old school and whining but that is my story and I am sticking to it✌

      You're right, of course, but the questions for the manufacturers are always the same: How many units can we sell, and how long will the model last? It's a real dilemma in these days of constant updates. For example, the "antique" Panasonic bridge cameras (FZ300, FZ2500), which are now nowhere near state of the art, have suddenly started selling again! How come? I'm not sure anyone knows. But regardless, if you have the cash, this camera will provide excellent results for both stills and video. . . just make sure to insure the damn thing! Finally, I find it hilarious that modern cameras might actually burst in to flames! That's not something anyone even imagined way back in the film days! 😎

    Hallo gordon, I have questions regarding battery life of r5c. Can you please tell me 1080p battery life. Thank you

    Oh gosh the problem is this camera body alone is £4,200 without anything else so if your new to canon your looking at well north of £8,000 when you factor in a horrifyingly expensive fast canon lens say £3k, cf express cards, good ND filters, spare battery oh gosh good Lord!. The Sony FX3 is yes £3,999 but Sony have by magnitude of greatness many many more lenses for E mount then canon do for this and at way way more affordable prices!. Many although subjective, many would argue the image out of Sony is better because of their decades of moving picture/feature film experience!. Too me it’s just absolutely bonkers £8k-£9k for that is just insane in my opinion.

    Nope. You left out the AF function in photo/video. Was looking to add this camera but nope. Have the C70 and love it...except when coming from shooting with my R6 and it's amazing AF. The R5C has the same substandard AF as the C70. Nope. Dealbreaker. ua-cam.com/video/ddgQtGDHxxw/v-deo.html

      I'm leaving the AF until final firmware as I don't feel it's representative yet. Anecdotally on this test sample, the AF in video mode was not as good as AF on the plain R5 filming video.

    No IBIS, 8K 60p with an external power supply?, no internal Prores RAW, prehistoric fans to cool the camera (the tiny Sigma FP beats it to a pulp) , no full HDMI, up to 10 seconds waiting time before filming starts. No, it's not an amazing camera, it's a yesterday camera. Hail Nikon Z9.

    It is very interesting to watch
    your videos regularly . I have both cameras
    R5 and R5C, I'm missing The R5 4K HQ sharpness quality to watch it right to TV without editing in my new R5C. the
    question is how can I use my new R5C as I used my R5 in mode 4K HQ
    (Ufine) right to watch it on tv without editing . I
    tried my R5C in all tv watchable formats without editing but I couldn't get the same sharpness quality as R5? Please help me .

      That must be the difference between the way the video is encoded or processed in the R5 system vs the R5c movie system. That's too deep a dive for me to do, sorry, but Canon may be able to help.

    Amazing video! If you have the battery grip with two batteries installed does that allow you to record 8k 60p without any limitations?

      That's a great question and the answer is I don't know but I will try and find out! You can record 8k 50p RAW LT under battery, but you'll need extra juice for 60p.

      No. Canon said you need dedicated power through their power pack thing or a PD power bank. Anker makes one

    Clearly the R5C is a camera leading more the video direction with its 10 bit depth on photos instead 14 bit depth on the original R5 on photos. On video both are 12 bit raw, if you 65% video guy this is your camera, if not, I wouldn't get of rid of my 14 bit depth on phoros and IBIS on the original R5 but with the well known overheading. It's hard to decide, but being 65% photographer probably I will keep the original R5 while videos is on second category on my work flow

    Does the R5c or R5 have aperture or shutter priority in video mode like the Sony A7siii? I shoot real estate videos and with the Sony I can set my ISO to 12800 and let the aperture and/or the shutter automatically adjust as I walk from room to the next. This is especially helpful when shooting in a house with poor light or with lighting conditions that are drastically different from one room to the next.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  2 роки тому

      I think Canon only offers full auto or full manual, either with auto ISO if desired. It's best to look shutter once you're filming and use ISO to compensate for exposure differences and aperture at a push.

      @@cameralabs that is true. I would honestly prefer backup recording and ibis but this does seem like a good studio cam for those with canon lenses. I just wish they kept ibis and allowed dual raw recording onto two CF cards.
