I love how Utada Hikaru sings normally and then proceeds to play the song backwards. Her vocals and her creativity is astounding. She truly is an underrated singer.

There’s a interview with Tetsuya Nomura in the Kingdom Hearts 2 Ultimania saying that he had Utada Hikaru write this song about Sora’s and Riku’s reunion. The English version and the Japanese version have different lyrics. Utada Hikaru wrote the English version first. Both songs are definitely from Riku’s point of view. These lyrics sung backwards are trying to tell us that he gave into darkness while he was under Ansems influence. His heart is a battleground when he battles with the light and the darkness. "We used to laugh we shall go back" meaning he misses the old days when they were friends and wants to go back to the destiny islands. "And now you shall sleep" Sora sleeps in chain of memories "I watch you fast asleep all I fear means nothing." "I need more affection than you know" and" I need true emotions" means he wants more attention from Sora and he wishes to face how he really feels about him.
Also Riku is very unsubtly in love with Sora and has been since the beginning. I always interpreted the paopu fruit scene where he says to Sora "C'mon I know you wanna try it" as a shy attempt to express his affection to Sora

I thought it was from Riku's perspective, talking to Sora. "I need more affection than you'll now" - A lot of KH1's story happened because Riku felt left alone by Sora. "I will destroy them" - Maybe Soras "new friends"?
There are a couple more.
I think both are possibilities since neither of the two hypothesises fits to everything. For example I can't imagine Namine saying "I will destroy them". Even if she would just be talking about memories or something like that she wouldn't use a word such as "destroy"
Sora is a little part of Namine. I'm not entirely sure anymore how exactly it was explained but when Sora opened his heart to save Kairi they got intertwined. Firstly that's why Kairi can have a Nobody overall, since Princesses of Heart can't lose their heart iirc, and secondly why Namine has the ability of altering memories but ONLY the ones of Sora and those affiliated with him.
Just noticed that some people pointed out that it sounds more like "I will NOT destroy them". If that's the case Namine really is more likely than Riku.

Actually, the song in reverse most likely is about Riku's time during CoM because his story was called "Reverse/Rebirth" in which he also goes down the floors of Castle Oblivion, instead of going up, like Sora does, and the song is about Sora forward and, seemingly, Riku backward.
The only real backwards lines are "I need more affection than you know" "So many ups and downs" and "I need true emotions"

In fact, the whole series is full of symbolism and I have to admit it is indeed scary to see my favorite videogames series with so many subliminal messages.
The mysticism behind the entire franchise is simultaneously one of the things that also make it special for me (but it is spooky if you analyze it with the "right" perspective).
Curious enough, the song is called "Sanctuary", as if you should praise an entity ("My hero was Ansem", aka the seeker of Darkness).
"13", "7" and "3" are very important numbers in the entire series. These numbers alone have a strong symbolism associated to them.
The Kingdom Key and Kingdom Key-D are also symbols similar to the "Keys of Heaven" from the Vatican (which also happen to be a strange allusion to the "X-Blade"). St. Peter's Square even as a Keyhole and stuff (Google it).
Xehanort's Keyblade happen to be a Foreteller's Keyblade (which has a strange looking eye on it) but also a goat (aka Baphomet).
The way they decided to symbolize the whole submission to Xehanort's thing is also a curious one (orange eyes).
Even the intro of the games with Sora falling from the sky in a clear sunny day (like a "fallen angel")
And I could go on with it...
As I said, I love this series, but you can't deny that if you analyze it in a certain way, you'll realize there's a lot of hidden stuff (even more complexe than the storyline).

Why on earth would the Darkness inside the heart of a Old man (Master Xehanort) be splitted into "13" exact vessels (this is part of the Dream Drop Distance plot by the way)? Why choose "13" elements for a Organization that wants to capture the heart of people for themselves? "13 Darknesses" vs "7 Lights"?
Why such exact numbers? Even the Organization's clothing is very similar to the kind you see in secret cults...
Why is the idea of duality (light vs dark) such a part of the series? Why is this thought so defended throughout the franchise (Xehanort mentions many times that Light and Dark are "in Equilibrium")?
Why are Xemnas' clothes black and white in the final battle of KH2?
Again, duality symbolism all over the place which also happens to be something defended in the Illuminati ideology, not to mention the"white & black checkers symbols" (another symbol from FreeMasonry) that is in every KH-related artwork.
I'm not trying to degrade the series (it's my favorite videogame series of all time), but I could do this all day.

At least until he realizes the truth, he thinks he's saving the world by killing the heartless. This is kind of big when it comes to Illuminati and how they mask the masses into thinking they are "doing the right thing" by doing meaningless things for example, Like my status if you support [insert cause here]. KH, like a lot of other great fiction today, has a lot of esoteric meaning and occultic symbology, that's for sure... Most other KH fans don't realize it because they're just gamers and do not play the games to also analyze them.
Everybody this song was written by Utada Hikaru. It is a stand alone song. It was not created for Kingdom Hearts. There are parts that sound backwards when you play the song forwards. Those are the only lines that are legitimate secret messages because obviously if they are backwards when you play the song normally they will have a clear message when you play the song backwards. The secret messages are in no way relevant to Kingdom Hearts. The only lines that are backwards messages are "I need more affection than you'll know", "So many ups and downs", and "I need true emotions". The rest is completely made up.

I get why you think of Riku, but IMO Sanctuary is a song about Roxas in relation to Sora, hence why it's the intro of 358/2 and KH2, while other KH games got Dearly Beloved intros.
"I need more affection -- I need true emotion -- I hate emotion" and lines like this, and so many other lines point to Roxas, who is a Nobody and can't really feel emotion. He's only a reflection.
Even the lines about Sora "going to sleep" by Namine is related to Roxas.
"I was him" - Roxas being part of Sora
"What's left of me?" - Roxas disappearing from Sora's awakening, and him being basically nothing in the first place
"ups and downs" and contrasts are Roxas's general theme as an echo, a shadow, a reflection. It's even in his visual design. It's in his name (which is Sora jumbled up with an X).
"My hearts a battleground" - Roxas fighting and struggling with Sora in the heart
In the context of the reversed lyrics, one line sounds like "wish was him", which was Roxas's desire to be real.
And then of course, Roxas being shown at the end of the song which introduces him like a new character as the outcome of all the other events that played beforehand, putting him into focus. It shows that Roxas is the overarcing idea behind all of the scenes in the cinematic.
It's like the "conclusion" of the entire song, the outcome.
This scene wouldn't make sense being here in other contexts.
Don't forget that these reverse lyrics can also easily be misheard. There aren't any facts since it's up to interpretation.

Yeah, considering Hikaru Utada made her songs focusing on the Japanese version, I would have to doubt that she found a way to make it so that it has a hidden message when translating it to the English version.
It is soooo much easier to make hidden messages while playing a song backwards in Japanese, just because of how the language works. I wouldn't doubt that you could find something in the Japanese version.

Ah, another UA-cam video playing "The Gullible Game". The game where people make and post bs videos to see how many people they can make believe its all true.
The truth? There are only 3 backmasked lines that are revealed when played in reverse: "I need more affection than you'll know", "So many ups and downs", and "I need true emotion". When the song is played normally, you can hear these parts are reversed. Hence, why they are revealed when playing the song in reverse.
The rest is just the song playing in reverse with words put on the screen from what it sounds like is being said. You can literally do this with any vocal audio. Record yourself talking and reverse it. You could hear things that aren't actually being said. Putting those words in caption while its playing fools the brain. Normal things played in reverse is all naturally gibberish.

Just Some Guy On The Internet its not bullshit. You actually hear what they are saying backwards. The point was that what he heard backwards, sounds like a secret message, which it is when you listen. He put down what he heard. And, this all could have been intentional, never know.

I know because I started doing it with my own vocals when I was 11 years old. You can always hear something that sounds like something else when you reverse vocals. But seriously Utada Hikaru wrote this song and sang it without thinking about some hidden messages when the songs plays backward, except of course the sentences in reverse in the 'normal' song. But she didn't choose the other lyrics (My Sancturay, where fear and lies melt away etc) because they sounds like "He was Ansem" backward. Even if some of the lyrics of the song doesn't make sense.
