I started with soil propagation right away. I put cuttings in soil. Watered it once and after about 10 days it had enough roots. Now I water whenever leaves look a little wrinkly and dull. I bought one hanging basket and already propagated it to produce 4 times more plants. And this in just about 2 months. I do recommend it to anyone who wants to start a house jungle that's easy to grow and look nice. I slept on it for a long time. If I knew how easy it is to care for I would have started with it years ago.
I was just telling my husband how they were starting to be a "problem". From one cutting I got 3 months ago, I now have 4 full plants! Gorgeous plants, and they do kind of shimmer.
Really. Wow. I just got the white and green one FRM my hubby in just a small 4 inch pot. Hoping it will grow just as fast. I love the big full vinning look
this is one of my favorite plants. I find it much better with this one to just soil prop the clippings. pop them right back in the pot. they seem to grow faster then in water. usually see new growth in a week or so
This was SOOOOOO helpful for me! A lady my mom works with game me a ton of these singles to propagate and I have never done this before I’m new to house plants! Now I know what do to do get them root faster!!!! Thank you so much❤️
Austin, thank you for your very informative video. I love Tradescantia plants and have owned and propagated many of them for several years. They are very easy to propagate. When the Tradescantia plant is not receiving enough light the leaves lose the purple color and turn to green. Either way they are beautiful plants.
I totally have clippings for anyone in the Austin, TX area! I can't see who you are here but hit me up on my facebook DMs so we can figure out a day to do a contactless pickup!
Glad I came across your channel! Love how you explain everything. I got cuttings from my sister in law and hopefully soon I will have roots to plant them in a pot. I liked and I also subscribed and I hit the bell! 😊 Thanks again! 🪴🌱🎋
How is it looking 8 mnths later. I'm a beginner and just got a small 4 inch pot of the white and gr.een one and curious as to how big it will get in a few months time
I propagate all of my Tradescantias that way. I have yet to lose any cuttings. Super easy! I just make sure the soil is quite moist for the first two weeks.
When planting cuttings after water propagation, how often to water them? If I heard right, you water them a lot for a few days. And after that? Also, I put one cutting in the soil and I am watering it immediately when I see the earth is dry, which is every two day (for 2 weeks now). It looks pretty good, but I am also wondering if I should continue like that.
I picked up some leaves off the floor off of the stores floors with permission I asked if I could have them and they said yes I could. So I brought them home and planted them with my peace lilly and so they grew roots and I put them in my new flower pots and now they are not doing well. I dont know what I done to them. I just transplanted them and watered them thats all I done. So what could you tell me I need to do to help them and yes I am a beginner. My poor plant... I cant believe they are dying on me now.
I have one that I started when I broke a piece off on accident and it took it, going down to the ground but my other one is grew about 9 inches up and then some is of it's growing down, the ones growing up is basically like Marge Simpson hair lol and it's bundled up,should I go through and gently loosen that up on top?
Wish I could agree with this video. This plant has given me more trouble then my “ more difficult” house plants. It’s literally worse than my most difficult plants.
I propagate all of my Tradescantias by just sticking the fresh cuttings directly into soil. Keeping the soil quite moist for the first few weeks. I have yet to lose any cuttings that way and it's so easy.
I have three cutting in a pot right now and ONE of them suddenly became wrinkled. Does anybody have any tips for what I can do or guesses on why it could be doing that?
I like the video but I gotta say I've had this plant rooting in a glass jar of water In a corner of over 500 plants. It Ran out of water and sat there waterless for a year. It wasn't looking good but I could still see signs of life so I put some more water in the jar and quickly. It began to grow new leaves. The area does have high humidity but that was impressive either way. The way I propagate my now is chop off the bottom half or top half If you will of my hanging basket with a massive amount of plant matter. I chuck the entire Bundle into a tub of water I change it after the 1st day as I do with all my water cuttings. And then once it roots, I chopped the plan up and Pot them up. I think this is an excellent method. For a lot of plants and good information, a very easy to watch video I didn't enjoy it. However I think you've done way too much here for this. Extremely extremely, extremely. Easy to Propagate invasive plant. I have a love-hate relationship with this plant. I love it because it Is beautiful but I hate it because it grows too well.
I have two huge zebra plants that were growing so beautifully, high, and regal, but I took them inside because of seasonal weather conditions, and they drooped so terribly. What in the world??? I am crushed. I bought them over the summer, and they did really well, but now.... 🙄😔
I've always had success with water, could be something in the water. But! I've also begun to put them straight into dirt and can confirm on my side that it works about as well. It's great for if you have a ton of plant matter to work with and... at this time I absolutely do. Toward the time of this recording though, I had very little to work with. I'd say for anyone who's working for cuttings -- still propping with water first is my go to. But, if you can stand to lose leaves then straight to dirt is so much easier
Try just sticking the fresh cuttings right into soil instead of rooting them in water first. I do this with all of my Tradescantias and I have yet to lose ANY cuttings and it's so easy. The soil has to stay quite moist for the first few weeks though.

I'm usually one of those no I can't cut my plant tho of people. But I've definitely found myself cutting this plant for sure.

You're so welcome!

As an invasive species I wouldn't recommend disposing of unwanted cuttings outside in the compost, they will grow and take over your entire garden
I really like the split screen close up. Awesome video!
First time watched your channel very good 👍
That was very thorough. Thanks so much! I have enjoyed this t. zebrina for some years.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Absolutely love this video. Very good instructions, easy to understand yet thorough!!!
Trimming and tying it up works awsome

Thank you!! I am so bad with plants and you made this so easy.
Such a great beginner plant, if something goes wrong, you can almost always save it!! Grows very quickly so it is quite rewarding!
good information about plant....detailed video 👍👍....this plant looks so beautiful in my hanging baskets ❤
What a good soil for this plant.! I got a clippong yesterday
Definitely an underrated plant! I had a clipping that got eaten a few months ago. I would love a clipping if you have any more!

Thank you for this video. Now I know how to properly care for my plant. 💚👍🏾
I just got one. I am a beginner but I’m learning intensely. It’s actually pretty weird looking close up I find.
How is it looking 8 mnths later. I'm a beginner and just got a small 4 inch pot of the white and gr.een one and curious as to how big it will get in a few months time
I also just took my cuttings and put them directly into soil and it went very well!
I started doing this a bunch now too! I wish I had mentioned it as a thing in the video! ☺️ It's a great way to do the thing.
I propagate all of my Tradescantias that way. I have yet to lose any cuttings. Super easy! I just make sure the soil is quite moist for the first two weeks.
Great vid really informative thank you 😊
Thank you for watching and leaving feedback, it means so much to me 💗
Really love my wandering jew plant and my heart breaks to see them dying... Thanks for the tips you've shared.
i completely forgot that mine existed but it’s still alive 😂, i’ll definitely save it and help it thrive again, thank you for the tips!!!

This was super useful, thanks 🥰
I am interested in a cutting! Great videos, always love tuning in :)

Hi Austin! Why the Tradescantia Zebrina leaves turn yellow and burning after repotting?
Thank you for this video 🌿
Thanks. I bought one from the grocery and now it is wilting and rotting. What do you suggest?

Very helpful. Ty!
awesome!!!!! thank you
Please post more I just subscribed
I just moved mine out of the light because the leaves were getting really pale, and I've never seen the leaves turn purple because of lack of light.
I picked up some leaves off the floor off of the stores floors with permission I asked if I could have them and they said yes I could. Do these have pink flowers?
Wandering Dude

Not sure what the nodes look like so im not sure where to take the cutting from
Wish I could agree with this video. This plant has given me more trouble then my “ more difficult” house plants. It’s literally worse than my most difficult plants.
What size is the nursery pot. :)
Can I use dry rooting hormone to start with water propagation?
My only window is north facing so hopefully mine will get enough light.
I already put my cutting in water for about 5 days but no roots yet ? What do u suggest ? Should I put it directly in dirt ? Or i should wait ?
Oh, give it a bit more time. I think by now it should have roots! Sorry for the slow reply Amira!

@@ThePlantProblem thanks for replying
I have three cutting in a pot right now and ONE of them suddenly became wrinkled. Does anybody have any tips for what I can do or guesses on why it could be doing that?
I think mine has thrips. All of a sudden the leaves are crispy and don’t look as vibrant.
I want to know How to not make the cut off part look ugly?
what root hormone do you use?
You’re making me feel guilty for trying to kill these in my canna Lilly bed 😂😂
Lol we need to have a plant and affogado date asap when this COVID thing is over 🙏💝

I bought them over the summer, and they did really well, but now.... 🙄😔
I have never had a successful water propagation, with any of tradescantia that I have. Always just put them in straight dirt and off they go

👏💕
there is another one the same except no line.
The leaf hates water
is this plant is harmful for baby?
Mine had roots in water but when I moved it to soil it turned brown and died 😢 any idea why ?

@@christinak9587 thanks for the reply, it's worth a try 👍
Lol.... How am I looking mine... 😭
Well if you wanna send me some rooted propagated plants I’ll be willing to except
