      @@MoreTrainVideos i was actually in blair just by pure chance that day , i was delivering a camper for someone and just chanced to run across the Big boy and see what was going on ,, not till i got home that night and saw the news did i realize what was actually going on ,, ,seeing this video though i am wondering if it was somewhat staged because this was a manifest train , and all empty cars ,, still cool even so

    • @wildcoyote34
      @wildcoyote34 5 місяців тому +3

      @Ryan Dunham my comment about this being staged ,wasn't about the train being staged , this was a real daily manifest freight train ,, i'm not sure which track this was on but i happen to know that the east/west freight through blair goes through town at 50+ miles per hour ,,and Union Pacific has a storage yard in missouri valley where they store motive power so it's a real interesting coincidence that this train stalled ,,from what i heard one of the 2 lead engines had a failure of some sort ,,150+ car loaded freight train with NO DPUs,, very strange indeed , i live in the small town of glenwood iowa and BNSF and UP have lines that cross here ,,even the empty trains have DPUs

    I just came from watching another video trackside. Big Boy is one magnificent hunk of steel. That bad boy made that look easy! A few red faces for the diesel engine drivers when grandpa had to come and give them a push. 😂 What a glorious sight! My stepdad used to restore and drive traction engines, and my dad restored antique tractors and barn engines. I just love all this old engineering! 😍.

    I live near the Round House where the Big Boy lives, when its home. I know the sound of its bell and whistle. When I first saw a video about this, I just chuckled to myself. He still has power to spare. As for the front wheels slipping, that was due to a low spot in the rails, or a soft spot. Still did not slow the old man down much, if any.

    • @FFred-us9tw
      @FFred-us9tw 9 місяців тому +2

      That’s not a DPU. A DPU (Distributed Power Unit) is either mid train or at the rear and operates via radio control from the lead locomotive. Both locomotives have to have special equipment installed to allow it to work. The locomotive behind the 4014 is simply a “Trailing unit” and anything it does as far as providing pulling power or dynamic braking is done 100% through an Engineer riding in it moving the controls.

    • @nathanbrickles6387

      The diesle behind big boy from what I understand 3rd hand pretty much just sits on idle or notch 1 while big boy gets to do a little work to keep limber while being a little more fuel efficient than if he was by himself...the diesle is also there to make sure big boy doesn't run dry on water because they don't have the water towers like they used to

    • @keithbrescia9893
      @keithbrescia9893 Місяць тому

      If I am not mistaken, the diesel can be operated as needed from the Big Boy's cab, with a control stand that was installed for that purpose. I saw that on one of the earlier videos. I think they said its primary function is to provide dynamic braking while descending long grades, in accordance with updated safety regulations. That saves a lot of wear and tear and possible overheating of the mechanical brakes.

      The freight train weighed 9,505 tons with 146 freight cars and two diesel units, the train that Big Boy pulled weighed 1,495 tons, making a total of 11,000 tons, adding up to 146 freight cars + 3 diesel units, 6 passenger cars, a cabose, plus the two yellow tank cars = 158 cars in total without counting the locomotive and its tender, and a length of 10,052 feet = 3063 Meters, or 3.063 kilometers.

    "Ah Well, we live and learn!" "Never mind, little James! I'm going to push from behind!" Clouds of smoke and steam billowed from the snorting engines as they struggled up the hill! "We can do it" "We will do it"!!! At last they reached the top!🚂🚃🚃

    What a Beautiful Locamotive, too bad it hooked up to a rolling stock with trash graffiti on it. Just a damn shame how they ink up rolling stock.

    This is very fishy. This happened years ago and the fgt was stuck on a hill. Also how did the "steam" fans find out about this.
    So how did the film just happen.

      How? Simple. Dispatcher made the request to Big Boy over the radio, Big Boy's engineers accepted. The actual routing Big Boy from its intended route to here, also done via radio. Rail fans monitor the frequencies. No spooky grand conspiracy required.

      The big boy was traveling along its published route with people chasing it. A train got stuck on the grade ahead of it on single track mainline and thus it was decided to use it to push the train up the grade.

      While I don't understand quite why they do it, it's a fact of life in this age and I can't get upset over it. It's curious though as rattle cans are expensive to cover that much area!
