I have a question about the operation at the start. Is Big Boy just rolling along while the diesel is pushing? Is that why its exhausting all the steam through the sides of the cylinders instead of out through the stack? If so, is it an operational reason? Like they are building up steam in the yard while the diesel pushes the train out to the main track?
When they first start moving in the morning, they have to have the cylinder cocks open to vent out all of the condensed water from inside the locomotive, otherwise they could risk blowing up a cylinder head. Until all the moisture is removed from the system, the diesel assists slightly (notch 2 or 3).
The big boy does the majority of the work. They use the diesel to help where slipping might occur to reduce tyre wear and mostly for braking to reduce wear on the big boys brake blocks

Not just during World War II, the Korean War era and 1950s as well! There's a reason UP kept them on the operating roster until 1960.

Neither. Electricity for the passenger cars comes from generator car 2066. Freight diesels are not provisioned to supply HEP to passenger cars.
