Engineers in ‘93 were still getting used to HAVING ditch lights I think. The mandate was only a couple years before to be required to have ditch lights and have them on bright over ALL grade crossings.
I truly miss the older appearance of Amtrak’s auto train with the single level passenger cars and all of those scenic dome cars on the train I wish I was old enough to see it in person but I was born a year after this video was taken which would be 1994 so this video was actually taken 31 years ago
11 units remain active with Amtrak right now. I am not even sure if 822 will see a comeback. I’ve been told it might knowing that it’s heritage unit. But I doubt it will as the new ALC-42s are slowly rolling into service. The 11 remaining units right now: P40s 814-817, 821, 824, 830-832, 835, and 837 remain with Amtrak as of now.
Right, they look similar but the P40s had faded stripes toward the back, strobe lights above the cab, a black windshield divider, and were in the 800 number series, and came out about 4 years before the 42s.
back when Amtrak had no problem operating 37 car trains
Of course the K5LA sounds awesome because these locomotives were brand spanking new at the time
It’s an early generation of k5s. K5la’s have definitely gone through an evolution of tuning. The horn tuning in this video barely exists anymore
Sounds amazing those K5LA’s! 😮
I love the horn on that P40DC
That K5LA sounds so good
Couldn’t agree with u more smooth
A shame no Genesis engine today bears those three blinking lights above the windshield.
I miss the Amtrak phase 3 from the 1990s 😢

Amtrak 803 was retired in lordstown train graveyard
Not anymore. The 803 alongside sister units 801 802 and 839 are being rebuilt in repainted in Keewatin Railway colors at Wabtec in Albia Iowa.
@@zacharycalgher3978not 839 it damaged it derails so there put it to scrap
wait. what about 805? is it gonna be put in storage for good? its my favorite P40
Edit: also what happened on 839? I literally have no idea
That clicking of the weels are so good
Now an oldie goldie with some of the original AutoTrain Corp equipment, including the original autoracks.
Great K5LA!!
This is why I love 805
Love it!!! Nice work!!!
Amtrak Auto Train
I like how the Genesis' ditch lights are not on.
And the strobes are in place.

Nice K5LA

North end of Collier Yard, Petersburg, VA

Apparently you didn't even make it to the ten second mark of the video 😂
GREAT VIDEO WALT!!!!
Awesomeness!!!
Sad they are not in service p40dcs we’re my favourite Amtrak locos :( because I like their paint
Yeah some are gone, most sold to ConnDot, 822 is Wrecked, and only a couple P40S are left, 824 at least

They look like P42DC locos to me
They both look similar except the P40DC came before the P42DC.

Luckily 805 is still around, just outside of the Wabtec facility in Erie, PA
Possibly being rebuilt but who knows
awesome.. thanks for the content
The train is good, but the amfleets more than dome? Thats something that makes me wish auto train was independent
That was so long
before the big byou crash
1992
