Wish I had seen this before I started bowhunting in the beginning of October. Would've helped a lot. Either way, I put in the work, 3 or 4 times a week with 2 hour drives upstate until I dropped my first buck with a bow 6 weeks after getting my starter Diamond Edge Infinite Pro bow in the mail. About 2 weeks ago, I seriously upgraded to a Mathews Z2 and now my groups are touching @ 20 yards on my first day shooting it. Can't wait for the '17 season with this thing. Great tutorial by the way. Thanks. I still learned from it.
Had the bow set up at a pro shop. It performed just fine ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxQEKUoxLWwayEDZR0NKB-5limn4MBU-2L . And I would say this is a good starting now that I could pass down to my son when he is older. But the package was missing the release and a nock was missing from one arrow.Dealing with customer support was terrible. They suggested I buy a new release rather than correct their own quality control issue because it’s to expensive for the. to ship it out from China.Update: manufacturer got back to me and resolved the issue. I retract the above statement.
Its really nice to watch an instructional video where the host(s) are relaxed, actually informative, and prepared. I am just getting into archery and doing my homework. Your 6 minute vid has given me more usable info than the nearly 1 hour (combined) of others I have watched. Thanks. Another happy subscriber
I just recently bought my first bow. It’s sooooo much fun!!! The guy that helped me set it up and taught me, gave me a lot of the same tips you gave! Very good video! Thanks man!
Great, new to archery. I came back to rewatch and comment. Video helped a ton and the relaxed position feels good I was holding everything so tight and was so inconsistent and this really increased my ability and confidence.
I just bought a compound bow from my stepdad yesterday. He was going to sell it on Facebook, and I tried it just for shits and giggles. Ended up liking, got it, and went to get a target bag today. This video helped! Didn't hit the bulls eye, but maybe tomorrow or later on. Thanks for the tips!
Thank you for the advice I just baught my first compound today and I have to say these techniques are exactly what the guy at the counter(archery tech) was talking about. Visually seeing it helps and will allow me to better grasp it in the field.
Great video Craig. I'm 59 years old and preparing for my very first archery hunt with my son. I've been an avid rifle hunter for the past 40+ years. My son finally convinced me to try archery hunting just for the heck of it, so here we go! I'm sure if I had seen a video like yours years ago I wouldn't have been as intimidated by the thought of trying to sling some arrows at an animal. You prolly weren't alive back then. HAHAHA. Anyway, thanks for the great tips. Maybe I'll check back in with you after my first couple of rounds of shooting my bow and let you know how your tips helped this old dog. Thanks again Craig!
"After all, we're athletes... We might be hunters, we might be fat, but we are athletes!" - I would join a hunting club if this was their motto, or they say this at the beginning and/or end of each meeting!
Im a big 2A guy in Massachusetts. Cant get my wife to touch a gun... but she wants a bow. So i gotta learn. I will comment as i progress. Lol. This should be fun!
Archers! Notice how this archer lines up his draw arm elbow with the point of his arrow for proper alignment and form at end of his shot sequence. He is able to repeat the shot sequence each time in almost the exact same way each time. The repeatable shot sequence helps accuracy a great deal. Enjoy!
I bought my first bow this past weekend.. I m in love with archery.. IMO it’s even funner than shooting .. I was gonna go in and get the PSE infinity but the guy at the shop convinced me to get a diamond edge or diamond deploy.. after trying out both I went with the diamond deploy... so fun.. I spent like 3 hours on Sunday shooting at an outdoor range by where I m at!!
Great vid! I train people especially with firearms to do a light jog until they are winded and then shoot. Very good way to emulate the heart racing you get when excited by buck fever lol
Mate, thankyou, so much. I just boght a 70lb bow today, off ebay... I put it together, and realised I'm left handed,, had the idea wrong as left to right handed bow... silly me. Anyway, watched a vid on dominant eye, turns out this left hand bow is my best chance. I just tore the shit out of my for arm, felt like being smacked with a bull whip... so,,... I'll learn along . This was much better than other vids I've seen.
Im actually preparing to start bow hunting in September (the start of bow season here in Md) and I’m doing as much research as I can to see whats the do’s and donts , and learn about bow hunting. This was a great informative video, taught me some great tips. Thnx Man.
It's been about three years since I shot, going for target practice tomorrow then hunting the next day. Not that I've forgotten how to shoot a bow, but this was great to refresh my memory.
I appreciate you taking the time to help other people out like me. I'm looking into getting a compound bow myself. your video is very instructive thank you.
Hey thanks for the tips! Lol always hunted with guns but my 11 year old is dead set on bow hunting. Let’s just say he taught me a few things when buying my first bow. So it should be interesting. Now my 9 year old wants to do it since his brother and me both have bows now lol that lucky shit won a lifetime hunting license at 8 years old lol
Bought my first bow today. Never shot one before. Thanks for the tips, because I wasn’t really sure where to start. I’ve always been a rifle hunter but wanted to add a bow just as a hobby. Who knows, maybe one day I’ll bow hunt too.
Thanks a lot for the feedback and welcome to The Sticks! Those words go a long way.. thank you. We're looking forward to producing more content and going to start posting regularly again starting October. Busy bow hunting for the next few weeks of course..
great video! i got my first compound a week ago, a used and pretty antiquated bow, but functional to get myself started, and was hangin with my buddy who was teaching me the basics, but i was just coming up short a lot. this explained a few of my mistakes, really appreciate it!
We Aussies use that term too, I wasn't aware Americans said in the sticks as in the bush, or forest. Thanks for the bow lesson. PS, Just realized Sticks is a surname is it.
Hey Oregon brother glad I found this channel! I'm over in The Gorge Hood River area. It looks like your in the Mid or southern Oregon area? Like Roseburg oregon or maybe even Grants Pass area? Hey keep up the awesome work and if you guys are over in The Gorge I have a few honey holes to show off!
There are some great tips on this video, I think im personaly gripping too tight on release resulting in a inconsistent shot so I'm working on that first thing in the morning, Thanks for the informative videos brotha!
Yeah, that is definitely a common problem.. It's all about being comfortable and relaxing! I used to shoot really tense, but now that I've loosened my grip with both hands I'm much more consistent.
You share some good advice but your release trigger finger should wrap around the trigger to the second joint so you avoid "punching" the trigger and develope target panic. It's much better and more accurate to pull thru the shot by using your back muscles(bringing the shoulder blades together) or pulling your elbow straight back to a point directly behind it while wrapping your trigger finger around the trigger and let the motion of the pull not squeezing the trigger per say to execute the shot. Hope that helps. I like that you work towards getting people involed in the great outdoors. Keep up the good work.
Great advice Greg, thanks for sharing. Personally, I like having the release at the end of the finger closer to the fingertip so I don't pull/punch it while wrapping my finger around the release. I think that's typically all about individual comfort and what works best for each person. Regarding the back muscles, that's a very good point and a very good way to explain it. I completely agree there. Thanks again for sharing your advice.
No problem. I hope it helps others. As far as using your fingertip it's much more sensitive as you pointed out but also much more likely to not squeeze and punch instead. The release should come as a complete surprise, just concentrate on aiming and pull thru the shot so there's no anticipation. Take care and good luck bowhunting sir.
Good video! I may not know much about archery, but I know that background music like the back of my hand from Off the Ranch. There’s only so much decent stock music out there haha.
That’s funny, I keep hearing that from some of our videos.. and this video is pretty old so I’m gonna say he copied us! Haha! But yeah, good (free) stock music is pretty tough to come by
Thank you so much my friend! Step 4 especially helped me as I’ve taken a lot of skin off my arm several times. I bought an arm guard, but it would still lightly bruise. Since watching this however I’ve only struck my lower arm once (and that was user error.) One question I have is what poundage is your bow? I keep the loose grip, but the bow doesn’t roll forward... Thanks again and happy hunting!
Couple points: Draw length is too long. String should touch the tip of your nose, and the string should come down to the corner of your mouth, not back in your cheek. I shot like this for a long time, my anchor was identical to yours. Thought it was right, until I found out it wasn't. Was shooting a 30" bow when I was 29" draw length. My form and consistency improved remarkably when I shortened my DL. If you had a kisser button installed on that string, it'd be resting on your cheek rather than in the corner of your lips where it should be. Because of the longer draw length, you're having to tilt your head downwards into the string more than you should have to. Your hand is also back past your jaw line(near your ear), and that's where you want to sit. Right on your jaw line. Your knuckles should be well in front of your ear. Secondly, if you plan on using an index finger trigger release, you want to make sure it's adjusted so that you can wrap your finger AROUND the trigger. You don't want to be pressing it with the very tip of your finger, as this can sometimes create downward pressure if you're having to reach with a fully extended finger to hit the trigger. Downwards pressure on the trigger creates issues. It can interfere with the operation of the trigger, and cause flinches which will ruin accuracy(and cause you to miss the target), and that downwards pressure will be relaying through the release onto the string. Ideally, you want the meat of your index finger, between your 1st and 2nd joint, to be resting on the trigger bar. And when you squeeze, you want to pull straight back. Not down. Not to the side. Straight back. I'd also recommend increasing the weight required to activate the trigger as well. You want to be resting your finger on the trigger as you're hovering your pin on the bullseye. At the same time you want to be pushing forward on the bow, and squeezing back on the trigger. This caused your shoulder blades to squeeze together, creating back tension. Doing it this way will surprise you more when the release fires(Which is what you want) and help with target panic. Of course, my word is not the gospel. Just my opinion. Love the bow. I shoot a Halon 6, but I've always been a fan of the Chill and Chill R. Good luck this year.
Fifty0ne more of a PSE guy. More bow for the money. These mathews bows are sometkmes a grand pr 750$ and shoots like 335 fps. Mine is 500 shoots 336, silky smooth draw, adjustable which will help with resale, light, and has the high end limbs every pse has and also a machined riser too so its pretty good quality.
Life Outdoors maxed out at 70lbs and im impressed so far. Nice 10" beestinger on it and it holds well on the target. Maxima Red arrows which are awesome. Cant wait to try out the new setup hunting.

Couple points:
