I had a deep discussion with a classmate in 93 over STP and Pearl Jam. I suggested STP as the better band and would have a long career. He thought I was crazy and that STP was a second-rate grunge band. I countered that they were actually a Hard Rock/Metal band playing grunge at the moment. I think I nailed that one.
I know I'm late but I genuinely the only things Pearl Jam had over STP is Pearl Jam was more mainstream (ironic) and Pearl Jam never fell apart because of drug addiction. As far as general hard rock, STP kicks the shit out of Pearl Jam. PJ never had the balls or testosterone to make something as heavy as Piece of Pie, Sex Type Thing, All in the Suit, or Heaven & Hot Rods. As far as experimentation STP also beats out Pearl Jam. Purple, Tiny Music and Shangri La are all cohesive and natural. Some of Pearl Jam's songs on No Code, Riot Act and most recently Gigaton are borderline unlistenable. You won't find garbage like Bushleager or Bugs in STP's discography cause they don't need to try hard. But still, I've always been super jealous of Pearl Jam fans. Their band grew in each subsequent decade and has endless live shows, performances and material. STP has a lot of side projects but its beyond too late to catch up. They could have been as highly regarded as Pearl Jam or Nirvana but today I think more people see them on the level of Bush or Smashing Pumpkins.

Experimental and retro in some places, heavy hard rock in others. Vedder is the better lyricist. Overall, I think Eddie is the best song writer.
