    Hi @CaliKim29 :) I'm so happy to have found your You Tube Channel! I am also in SoCal and I've watched several of your videos over the last few days. They've all been very informative and helpful. After watching this video, I put together a similar set up like your tiered shelf and will be trying out grow lights for the first time. My seedlings are always really leggy, so wish me luck! Mainly, I wanted to say thank you for all the work you've done to build this channel and be an accessible gardening resource. I look forward to your guidance and recommendations as I grow my groceries :) Thank you!

    This was sooo helpful. I'm determined to save more money and growing more in my garden this year by planting seeds rather than buying plants from nurseries. The specific grow lights on the market with all the different colors are overwhelming.. makes it so much easier knowing we can buy other light bulbs which meet the lumins and kelvin specs! I'm going to start with the clamp lights on my countertop first and go from there. Thanks for your videos!

      Going to do pretty much the same! Do you have an estimate yet for how much more time growing from seed ( tomatoes for me) instead of growing from starter plants will be? I really like the change you are making, and hope to get there soon....this series in beginner indoor gardeners will help immensely 💚🌿💚

    Excellent video! I gave up long ago trying to grow in sunny windows .. that never works; invested in a multiple shelf/LED grow light system and my starts this system have blasted up to heaven. I've also employed several heated seed mats. All my starts look awesome! Also helped that I too, have a nice piano in the room by some of my shelves!

    I bought two of those six foot shelves in the black from Northern tool a year ago. I also bought three forty eight inch shop lights and one eighteen inch I had to build a stand for I used it last spring. If just wasn’t enough space so I entendres to set up the shop lights all with correct Calvins and Lumens ..I believe I had watched your videos previously on this and hoped I purchased the correct lights I did. I remember the video you did painted and got the little corner. Closet ready. You didn’t have many subscribers back then. Wow have you grown in three years.AMAZING Kim.
    I didn’t know about that timer. Will get one. I didn’t get all of this at one time my advice to a beginning would be to not be discouraged but what you can when you can instead of giving up and saying I can’t afford it each of these items I mentioned I purchased a year or months apart.
    I did that with my Hoss trays with their special grooves, but my little light was too little so I have them, five of them as they are very discounted if you buy five almost like getting three free.
    So looking forward to using them. I also purchased thirteen raised beds Vego nine pieces and four galvanized steel plus I purchased cedar to do some smaller beds yes and soil and compost.
    I went from couldn’t afford lights to being blessed by the sale of a Pisces of property, very thankful…so done from California wanting property in Kentucky lol.
    I hope our weather cooperates this year had two great years then last year a busy
    You do a fantastic job of explaining these setups.
    Thank you and Camera guy.🪴

    Hi Kim a new gardener here! I’m so glad I found your videos, I’m def gonna binge watch them! I’m super interested in the light box one but I’m concerned about leaving it opened or closed since my seeds are gonna need humidity starting out. Does it overheat too much when left closed? I definitely don’t wanna burn my seedlings once they sprout and I’m concerned about the heat warping the plastic or even a glitch happening and a fire starting. I might be exaggerating over the tops here, but I do live in a small two floor apartment complex with many buildings very close together, so I want to take extra precautions for the sake of everybody since I’m not home 24/7. Also im a huge worry wart, so I just wanna make sure before I jump in head first😂

    Initially thinking that the clip light approach would be easily adjustable and uses "standard" socket GROW LEDs that could be easily replaced, but concerned that they were maybe too cheesy/ugly or not as efficient for starting tomatoes, etc. -- I started to search and found your channel. So. . . to answer your question, "what method will I use"? Whatever the wife agrees to (after I share your videos with her)! Thanks!

    • @CaliKim29

      Hello David - lol I hear ya - welcome to our channel! Although not as budget friendly, there are certainly more aesthetically pleasing grow lights out there, if that meets your needs better. The clamp light works well for a small batch of tomatoes, one 6 pack seed cell, or 1 small pot. You can also attach the clamp to a milk jug/PVC pipe and move it up as the tomatoes grow. Let me know what you and your wife decide, enjoy your seed starting, and thanks for watching!

    I made a mistake on height above plants for grow lights. Recommendation for tomato and lettuce, radishes. I also homebrewed starter bags by using cheap Walmart reusable shopping bags. $0.85. I also found Kellogg raised bed soil was easily found here and tomatoes dying recovered and are producing tomatoes sadly, their poor start means I will not get many.

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  3 місяці тому

      That's ok...keep moving forward, Richard! If this helps -
      • Tomatoes: Position your grow lights about 12-24 inches above the plants. Tomatoes like plenty of light, so make sure they get 12-16 hours a day.
      • Lettuce: Place the lights 6-12 inches above the plants. Lettuce doesn’t need as much light as tomatoes, but it still benefits from consistent, close light.
      • Radishes: Keep the lights 6-12 inches above radishes as well. They’re fairly low-light tolerant but will do better with more light.
      Using those Walmart reusable shopping bags for starter bags is a clever and budget-friendly idea! And it’s great to hear that the Kellogg raised bed soil is helping your tomatoes bounce back. Even though the start wasn’t ideal, you’re on the right track-keep up the good work, and those tomatoes will reward your efforts! 🌱🌟
      You have a great attitude, Richard, I love it! CaliKim

    Great information and with materials that I can actually link to and/or find. Thank you so much. This is the the most recent video that I've found with info about making a growlight box.
    I'd like to find a longer, narrower container and put two lights in it like Gary Pilarchik has his set up, but I have no idea where to get container like that (29x10-1/4 inches, 16 inches deep).
    Why is this growlight box not line inside with aluminum foil like in the older videos?
    Do you think two lights would work better in your growlight box?
    I looked at the two foot shop light. It looks as if they don't make them with replaceable lights. Would rather start with economical growlight box.

    Hello, you are right to point out that it is not necessary to buy very expensive grow lights to grow seedlings or even plants. 5000k is a full and balanced spectrum, even if there is a little more blue than red (but that's not important).
    Personally I would use small usb fans to circulate the air especially in the transparent box (beware of humidity). Don't put your lights too close to your seedlings, heat can be a problem, and seedlings don't need much light (about 250 PPFD), 18 hours of light seems to me too much, 12 to 14 hours is enough.

      Hello Pierre - appreciate the pro tips! I'm starting with the basics in this video - will fill in more details in future "First Time Gardener" videos. The great thing about gardening is that there are so many ways to do it, depending on your growing situation. Glad you've gotten good results with 12-14 hours a day - 18 hours on works well for me over the many years I've been using grow lights. Thanks for watching!

      Cost = wattage & hours it is on per day / 1000 = kWh (Kilowatt hours). Then multiply by the cost of electricity in your area,
      For example in my area its 15c per kWh.
      So if you have a grow light that is 40W and on 16h a day, then for one month the cost is 40x16x30/1000 = 19.2 kWh. 19.2 x 0.15 = $2.88 per month.

    Hello again! I just started my indoor seeds today. How exciting. I created the bin and clamp light version.I have a few questions..
    1. Should the bin be clear to get sunlight?
    2. I bought a heating pad. Should I put that in the bin as well? I was going to put the plants in a silver container (to bottom water) and then the heating pad underneath the bin. Or does it not need a heating pad because it’s a bin?
    Thanks!

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  8 місяців тому

      Great!!! No, the bin being clear doesn't matter - the grow light handles the light.
      The heating pad goes under the seed tray NOT the bin for warm weather vegetables. (very important, not the bin) Hope this helps, Chelsea. CK

    I am hoping to grow my seeds inside to start with and then everything will be in containers because that is the easiest for me to work with. I may get adventurous and plant a few sunflowers or a couple rows of corn, but I am disabled and can not do much especially when it comes to bending over. I have a couple shelves that I can use - one outside for when the weather gets warmer and one for inside using grow lights. I started a late fall garden but very little made it being transferred inside. I do have 2 beef steak tomato plants that love my west glass door and are growing like mad. They have grow lights on them at least 18 hours a day.. Had flowers on one but they are gone now. Not sure why. 😕 Working on growing some lettuce now. I wish I had learned more from my mom who had a huge garden when I was growing up. It was so satisfying being able to pick a tomato, brush it off, and bite into it. Good luck to everyone!!!

      The flowers may have dropped for two reasons: one they weren’t pollinated (you can tap the stem a couple times a day to pollinate, I also use an electric toothbrush as the high vibration makes certain they’re pollinated), but it could also be that they don’t have the right kind of light to support fruiting (red light). Next time they flower it may help to get a warmer fluorescent shop light. Kim talks about the Kelvin range. The smaller the Kelvin, the warmer the light (6500 is bluest/coolest and best for vegetative growth). Sunlight is a balance of both, but often windows still filter too much good stuff so supplemental warm light might help next time it decided to flower. :)

    I watched the similar video you done last time about this but am still confused on how far the light reaches. I have space in my loft extension to have a couple of desk sized seedlings. I don't have the budget to buy lots of grow light strips. Could i use a single lamp or main light fitting with a grow light? We get morning and afternoon sun there but not the mid day sun during winter in the loft. It is really hard to know the difference between leggy and well grown plants. Whilst we had more stable weather in the past, the last few years have been unpredictable. TIA x

    • @melissasullivan1658
      @melissasullivan1658 2 роки тому

      The rule of thumb is that seedlings need 3000 lumens per square foot to keep them stocky. That’s a lot of light, right? You can cheat by keeping the light on longer (say, 4 hrs off), but I’ve found that investing in cheap fluorescent shop lights is both economical and ultimately leads to more robust plants.

    • @CaliKim29
      @CaliKim29  2 роки тому +1

      Hi AnyKeyLady - you can definitely do this on a budget. I'd recommend the shop light/cabinet set up with a 2' or 4 ' shop light (depending the size of your desk ) for a few trays of seedings, just like I showed in the video. Seedlings should be no more than 2-3 inches away from the light to avoid leggy stems. Don't depend on window light, it's just not enough. Hope this helps! Thanks for stopping by!
