We really love using coir. We found an organic, biodynamic source where the coconuts are grown in a sustainable polyculture. Peat moss is less sustainable ecologically. Those bogs take thousands of years to form (10 years for one tiny centimeter!) and the bogs are also a carbon sink that we vitally need. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with the beautiful gardening community. You have a lovely spirit that comes through. Love and peace. 💜🙏

Well, I finally purchased the premium bundle package from VermisTerra. I've been watching you for a year and decided to give my garden some extra love. Your vids give me the motivation to keep gardening all year round (instead of just Spring & Summer) which I thoroughly enjoy. Last year I took your advice & filled my garden with dead leaves (I live in the forest up on a mountain). I also watch The Rusted Garden, too!

Yes, I will be starting along with you this year. I’m a first time gardener. I did watch your other two seed starting series, but I look forward to watching this new series too. I followed your instructions to create my light box and I have my seeds already in there and they started germinating in the tall peat pots after four days, now on day six. I’m in SoCal as well so I’m looking forward to the warmer days and outdoor planting. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge. 👍🏽

I'm new to coir, but just mixed up a batch of 50/50coir and potting mix (peat, forest byproduct, some perlite) and added another 30% perlite. As a new indoor (legal) medical grower, I've already learned ALLL about those pesky fungus gnats.. I'm still battling them now. I got tired of wasting $ on peroxide, and am waiting on the next watering to give the soil a good drench of neem oil and ALWAYS set out sticky traps. And here's one you may not have heard of, mosquito dunks soaked in your watering can. When you water, the bti bacteria kill the larvae in the soil. Needless to say, I have some of those ordered as well. These gnats have met their match.😂

Darn fungus gnats ruined my microgreens. I had to cut them earlier than I wanted to. Thanks for that tip. I'm almost done with my starts. Being in Florida they're almost all outside now. Does the fungus gnats feed on the coco coir material? I know the love peat moss.

I use boiling water. Pour it in over the coir and pop a lid on top, very quickly the steam will break the coir down no problem and also clean it just in case. Oh and you gotta love the smell.

Worm casting are pretty high in nitrogen. Have you thought of substituting powdered or prilled gypsum? It’s a lighter nutrient source that puts calcium into the mix. Calcium is a building block of cell growth.
Also if you add just a bit organic dish soap it acts as a surfactant and get better absorption and less pooling.

We have pet rabbits and use their poo in the garden. Could I substitute that for the worm castings in the recipe for seed starting mix? Any suggestions on where I can find the best deal on coco coir and vermiculite these days? What do you consider a good price so I can compare with my local garden centers? Thanks.

I like 👍 how you showed how to make your own soilless. Will I get any fungus gnats from your mix ? I hope not. I don’t want those bugs. Did I wait to long to do the starter kits for tomatoes 🍅 and peppers ? It just started to warm up in Kentucky. Can I go ahead and just put them in the containers like I do every year with the tomato 🍅 seeds, peppers etc and than leave them outside? I really do want to have fungus gnats. I’m afraid my cats and dog will get into the mix. Also if I sees germinate will it speed up the process to get a tomato 🍅 plants? 🌱

I’m new to gardening and have been planting my seeds in seed starting mix but I’m confused on what happens when we direct sow into our containers or raised beds. I know Kim does it all the time but I don’t remember ever hearing an explanation on this. If someone could help me understand that would be super helpful!
I live in SoCal so direct sowing is a great option during the warmer months but I’m just not sure if I should still be using seed starting mix in my containers and raised beds or if the seeds will just be okay.

Hi Cali. I've bought coco coir to make my own seed starting mix and I even sterialize it with boiling water before I add in vermicasts. I noticed that I still get fungus gnats. What happens if we don't mix coco coir with vermicast? Would the seedlings still grow? How do I keep them alive and healthy without vermicast mixed into the coco coir?

On a couple of my tomato seedlings they have some purple on the bottom sides of the Cotyledons. Is that normal? Now my garage temps got down in the upper 50’s a few nights and then I started bringing all the seedlings into the laundry room at night for bed where it’s a normal 70 degrees. In the garage is where my grow light station is. Is the purple a sign of cold or something else? It doesn’t look like it’s the entire bottom of the leaves, just portion of the middle stretching the entire length. Also I have a ton of peppers growing with no purple right next to them.

I am a rule breaker because I use old potting soil, garden soil, sifted aged wood chips, and whatever else that isn't purchased just for potting plants. It is the bags I don't like. In the past I have used them for weed barriers, and soil retention in retaining walls. You could even use them as a grow bag. In the end though most all end up in the trash. I can get peat, and coir locally rather cheap. I would get the coir because it has less packaging and it has no sticks to sift out.
