Have you started your seeds yet? Thanks for watching!
Yes I have
Hello James - always exciting to get those spring seeds started, isn't it? Bet you can't wait to harvest! Looking forward to growing our spring gardens together!
i'm letting last year's kale go to seed! :D I've had kale seedlings survive getting coated in sleet and it actually made them brighter and perkier when they did!
Thanks. I will
CaliKim29 Garden & Home DIY Yes and Im trying to learn how to take them from indoors to outdoors a little each day and what temperature is safe and how to harden the plants off before bringing outdoors Lettuce and Herbs at this point Texas temps 63-70 degrees 2/18/19
1. Don’t use soil from your garden: buy potting plant mix
2. Don’t plant your seeds too deep
3. Label your seeds
4. Not enough or too much water
5. Not enough overhead light. Get a grow light for indoors.
6. Don’t give up!
I just did 45 plants and just used soil from my little garden 🤣🤣
Thank you
Thank you lol
Oh my gosh !! Frustrating video til I saw your comment ... thank you !!!
Eli Bueckert thanks for skipping over for us
Put a coffee filter in the pot before you fill it with seed starting mix. When you water, the filter will allow the water to drain as well as prevent soil from washing out of the pot's drainage holes.
Great tip- thanks for sharing it!!
Jean Lofaso great tip, thank you for sharing.
or a piece of pantyhose
Loved loved this video! Zone 6 here. Usually buy transplants as I thought seedlings were too overwhelming. First year I had alll leggy plants and got discouraged. Thank you for this !
Thanks
I grew pepper seedlings from the seeds inside a bell pepper and I put them in garden soil in the container you get mushrooms in when you buy them from the store. I kept that in my greenhouse and they are gorgeous. A beautiful green and doing so well.
That's a great idea! Impressive! Keep that going!! CK
The best part of growing from seed is you can grow varieties you won't find for sale in the garden centre, plus you save a fortune over buying the plants.
Stella Luuk and no spray with poison!
Yep and they taste better home grown imo especially if you take good care of them
One year I found your videos mid July and started gardening. It was really late in the year but I followed your tips, started from seed, and grew 5 huge tomatoes on my balcony in a container! This year I live at a house and there is so much room for a garden. I'm gonna get started early start this time - so excited for a proper go this time!
That’s great…..👍
Im seeing this comment 3 yrs later. How has your gardening journey been?
@@nikkilee2168 Yeah, I'm curious too.
How'd it go and are you still growing?
To help your seedlings grow stronger, be better prepared for transplanting and to cut back on acclimating time place a small aucilating fan on low to blow slightly on your seedlings as they grow.
If you re-use plant pots, make sure that you sterilise them first as you could transfer bacteria to the new plant’s
how do you sterilize them?

How To Wash and Disinfect Gardening Pots
Step 1: Soapy Soak. After you knock any dry soil out of the pots, fill up your sink or a large bucket with warm water. ...
Step 2: Manual Scrub. Soaking should get off most of the dirt, but take a look for any stubborn clods or mineral deposits. ...
Step 3: Rinse. Give everything a good rinse. ...
Step 4: Bleach Disinfectant Soak.
Pots should be soaked in a solution of 1 part household bleach and 9 parts water for an hour, and then rinsed and soaked in clear water to remove any bleach residue that remains.
I use regular outside dirt to start my seeding. They grow fine. I live at Buffalo NY. I use grow lights. I also use my goldfish tank water to fertilize my plants.
Thanks for sharing; if that works for you go for it! Regular dirt can lack nutrients for a good strong starting soil...but heck, if it's working for you, keep doing it. You may want to try a test group with Seed Starting Mix...just for fun. Thanks for watching and commenting Virgil!
Please don't use peat pellets if you can avoid it - coconut coir provides much of the same benefits while being a renewable resource. Peat *isn't* renewable and collecting it destroys bog ecosystems that rely on it for filtering the water. It takes over a hundred years for the sphagnum moss to build up and decomp into peat, coir gets replaced often because it actually breaks down in your soil and if you're like me with heavy clay soil in Texas, it can seriously help combat against compaction and drainage issues.
I am growing vegetable plants from seeds for the first time. My husband built me a raised garden bed on wheels, as the only good sun is on my concrete driveway. You provided great tips that I intend to incorporate in my endeavor. Thank you!
That is awesome! Thank you so much for sharing!!! LOVE this! Kudos to your husband, as well, Mary! CK
Thank you for this! We move into our first home in a few weeks and there’s a ton of garden space. I’m a lifelong apartment dweller so I had no clue what to do. I have two trays started now!
I appreciate your delivery. Clear but in-depth. Thank you thank you.
so how did you first garden go last year!! what did you grow and what did you learn from it? :)
Meeee too🤗😄🤗
Out of so many videos out there for the starters, this one is the absolute best. It covers everything in good detail in just one video. Plus the video is excellently made. Thank you for sharing this knowledge and all the links.
Love the energy and excitement, it makes learning how to grow a lot of fun:3!
This is my first spring in Southern California, and I'm so excited to have this resource to grow along with somebody in my neck of the woods!
I am in the Bahamas, our winters are like 75 degrees Fahrenheit. I am planting basil chives rosemary red kidney beans and white beans.
Excellent video!! Love the way you explain everything in detail. Very informative!
Loved this video - I'm getting ready to start my first veggie garden - have only done ornamentals so far - and have been feeling a bit overwhelmed as I've also decided to start with seeds, which adds an extra challenge. But like you said, it's fun to experiment and I'm looking forward to seeing my first results...whatever they may be!
You’ve just got the greatest personality! This video was super calming
I enjoy watching you start seeds- you make it so simple! I am so eager to get going but I need to wait a few more weeks. Now I will be all refreshed on how to avoid mistakes! 🤗
Loved this! Thank you for doing a 101 class how to start seeds.
You are so encouraging you seem to know how disappointing it's been for me in the past to try to grow my garden I'll stick with it thanks a lot!
Fantastic video ! Congratulations!
Another fabulous video!!! Love the whole setup... having my coffee and enjoying the patio with you both this Sunday morning. CG, I really love the feel of being there just on the opposite side of the table planting along with Kim :) And Kim, my favorite of all tips (even though they have all helped me) is number 6 never give up!!! This truly encompasses much more than I realized at first but you’ve always encouraged it through other tips... patience, experimenting, trying something new and many more! So much learned from gardening and growing from seed as well as from friends like yourselves that help guid me in what I may not have realized on my own...
Enjoy your weekend you guys and thanks for letting me sit in and have my cup of coffee with you this morning :)
I like how you reviewed quickly throughout the video, each time you added a tip.
Love the nice relaxing atmosphere with a beautiful cosy fire going in the background! Thanks for all those great tips!!👍🌱
Glad you’re enjoying the videos!! Thanks for watching!!
@@CaliKim29 could you please tell me the best company to buy seeds from i live in N.H. and frost ends late in ay...so i want a quality seed...thanks!
This is a goldmine of information. Thank you 🙏🏼!
Totally awesome video!!!
This made me so excited to start but it’s a bit too early for my zone. However I have a plan written out and I can get my supplies together now! I will be starting tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, zinnias and some herbs indoors. Cold tolerant veggies I start outdoors as soon as the soil can be worked. Can’t wait, great video!!
Great organization Amanda!!Sounds like you are going to have a fabulous garden- keep me posted on your harvests!! Thanks for stopping by!!
I’m in Pittsburgh and just started about 12 varieties of peppers yesterday along with 8 slicer tomato varieties. I know I’ll have to transplant again before planting out in the garden but I am experimenting to see how much earlier I can get a harvest if I’m willing to do a little extra work in the spring. I don’t want to wait until August for tomatoes and peppers so we’ll see how this goes. Thanks for sharing your tips. Very informative video as always.
Im up near Erie PA and getting ready to start peppers and tomatoes as well
If you plant them outside early and a frost gets forecast, cover them with a 3 gallon black container as the temperature dips below freezing. You often get those black container for free at nurseries. Some may have a low charge for used containers. But they will maintain heat around the plant. Add plastic tape over the weep holes if necessary to hold the heat in.
Your excitement gets me motivated 😃! Super informative and fun video! Thanks 👩🏻🌾
Simply awesome... Great guidance... Thanks a lot
“Super, super” good beginner video!
Hi Kim. I have pepper seedlings already well along the way. I planted my tomatoes today. All are heirloom varieties. I am experimenting to see which heirlooms will do well in Louisiana zone 8. Last year some the heirlooms I grew did better than the hybrids. I have never enjoyed gardening more that when I began starting my own seeds. It opens a huge world of possibilities as to which varieties you can grow, instead of depending on the big nurseries who stock the stores with only a few varieties. Thank you for encouraging and teaching people to sprout their own.
I'm above you in NW corner of Louisiana. I grew Rutgers Tomatoes last year and even with the drought, they did fairly well compared to others. Word of advice. Start raising your own worms for worm castings. Easy to do and pays off big time.
@@johnvaughn3489 Yup, worm castings can get pricey. Saves money on fertilizers and waste disposal in the long run.
I am really anxious for spring! Will be starting seeds soon. Thanks for the advice.
I just discovered your channel and have ordered your book and the spring collection and micro greens. Our last frost isn't till the middle of April, so I am super excited to start my own garden. I've never grown my own veggies, but always wanted to. Your channel is easy to follow and a great guide. I can't wait to get started!
This is great information!
Thanks for the “on the cheap” tips!
All I kept thinking the entire time... “this is suppose to be cheap?” Lol
I'm really new to your to your channel but I'm amazed at all the great information you share with us! Thank you!
Thanks so much for the kind words and super glad you’re enjoying the videos and finding them helpful!! Thanks for watching!!
Hello Cali Kim, I just got your seeds in the mail today. I am so excited to start my spring garden. Thank you for the speedy delivery and I really loved the smart pot. Thank you.
Thank you! I will definitely be using these fabulous hints and tips for our garden xx Awesome!
This was so informative i feel compelled to return the favor lol
Great content as always I already have my seedlings starting for this spring!
Super job- so excited you will be growing along with me!! Thanks for watching!
You are so supportive!
Wonderful and useful video. Love your spirit ❤
Hi Kim I love your video. I live in Ireland and this will be our first year starting a garden. My kitchen is full of seedlings hope to get some out into a small green house we purchase soon. I think it's still a bit cold for planting in the 2 raised beds we built out of old fence boards. Wish us luck. Thank you for all your helpful videos.
Wish i could see what your doing. Your words to read are in the way to see anything
Love all the information! I already have some tomatoes and pepper plants I got from the garden center but I have not attempted the seeds for beets, squash, radishes, cucumbers, kale, spinach, basil, cilantro, and carrots. You have given me the courage to get going. Here in Southern California early is a good idea as the sun gets intense. Any tips for shade later would be welcome.
I love love your chimnea thing in the background it is so cozy looking !!
Was ready to give up ! Thank you so much!
This video is awesome! So happy I found you! Im introducing gardening to my 5 yo twin girls for our homeschool curriculum. I do not have a green thumb at all...lol!! But I think if I follow your instructions it'll be doable. My daughter loves sun flowers as well, so i think it'll fine to start growing them inside.
Rochelle Graham awesome curriculum! So much out there and so many easy veggies to grow! You got this!
Gardening isn't that hard! You can do it! Gives you a new appreciation for farmers. Tomatoes, peppers and beans are the easiest of all! Just give tomatoes room to grow and make sure beans can climb unless they are a bush habit. You might also like Rainbow Gardens on UA-cam she is great
I started my Mammoth Sunflowers inside. They are absolutely beautiful. I'm going to transplant them in a week or two, when they are ready. :)
Excellent Rochelle. They will be exited and ferl involved and a great sense of achievement, and they be more likely to eat what theyv sown.
Another good reason for starting seeds indoors is that, often, it takes more heat for seeds to sprout than it takes the resulting plant to grow!
I made the mistake of using garden soil my first try (last year) because I didn't want to buy soil that was shipped from who-knows-where ville. Hopefully I can learn to make seed starting mix from material I can get either myself or from local producers.
I love this page. It gives so much information to find everything you need. Thank you CaliKim. I will be ready Spring 2021.
Thanks for your watering tips
Hei Kim! I live in Norway, and started my tomato seeds indoors a week ago :) Love your videos! Starting, cucumber and squash next week :D
Super Nicolas!! So excited you will be growing along with me!! Thanks for watching!
Thank you, Kim! This year, I'm going to get a head start on my purple tomatillos. I started them too late last year and fall came early and it got too cold. 😢 I appreciate all the tips and tricks. I love watching both you and Gary's channel. Much love from NW Florida.
Hey Cee Cee!! Thanks so much for the kind words and keep me posted on your tomatillos harvest!! Thanks for stopping by!!
i started everything way too late last year too
such a fun video! I love watching people planting seeds! I will start mine next week!
Thank you Kim! This was very informative. Watching along really helped me personally, being someone who learns better from watching and seeing and hearing. I appreciate you! God bless and Shalom and thank you!
Toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls work well to start seeds.
I so do that and has worked for the last three years!!!
Wow really that’s a great idea
Recycle bin picks
How do you use egg shells?
Wait how
Great video - a thing that you should also do is to keep the plants outside before transplanting them into the soil. They need to adapt towards the new place.
Awesome update my friend
Thank you!!! You've answered many of my questions!
It's 9f here with snow in Michigan. I'll be starting mine middle of March. Tomatoes , cucumbers watermelon , green peppers Marigolds. Sunflowers petunias . It's so hard to wait.
Toledo says me too! 😊
I've already started some seeds and learned a few mistakes I made but I think I can overcome them. Here in southern AZ the weather has been colder and more cloudy than usual so I've had to hold off putting in cool weather seeds. Great tips for me to follow. And I've learned, from you, that worm castings really help plants grow. Thanks.
Sounds like you have got this down!! Let me how your harvests went!!
I just bought your book and 2 growing kits!! I'm nervous but so excited 😁
Helpful information, thank you !
Great video! Good information presented clearly. (except for suggesting we grow kale,of course..) :-)
Hi Kim! Where did you get that sun wood stove? It is beautiful!
This is one of the best videos I have ever seen for planting. Just an honest, humbled opinion. Thank you for the encouragement.
I just love your videos and your personality! Thanks for these tips!🌷🌹💚☺️
Hey,
I live in northern Ontario. I've got my seeds, garden layout...not even joking but an excel chart of frostdate, germination time, anticipated harvest date....right now just fighting the itch of starting my seeds too early
What did you use ( your favorite sources) for references to create your excel sheet and layouts?
I'd be interested in seeing your chart if you are willing to share. Leeluv96 at Gmail.
have you started yet? I live in central Yukon and generally start mid-end March. We have an early spring again this year, second time in 3 years which is so unusual. All snow has been gone for 2 weeks already.
Northern Ontario? The top 3 crops there are Turnips, Turnips & Turnips. And the other crops that will do well there are....um....uummmm.......Turnips!
Turnips, turnips and turnips. Sooo funny!
Tomatoes for sure. Trying garlic this year. Some flower seeds I collected on a recent trip.
Sounds great, Mary! Be sure and let me know how it goes! Sorry my delay! Kim
Thank you very much all informative for all beginner gardening communities.
Blessings
We are in North Central Colorado and still have between 12 - 14 weeks before we can plant our gardens here. We have even been known to have one last snowfall on June 1st. So it will be at least another six weeks before we will be starting our seeds in the house. My problem is that we are moving in mid-May to Central Ohio and their season is so different than ours is here. My husband has gone ahead to start his new job and get us a home and will be far to busy to get our garden set up. We have pretty much decided that I may go ahead and start some of our cold weather crops here (especially lettuce) and at some point fly there and begin the gardening there. It is going to be madness at first, but I am determined to have my garden this year. I really need to can a ton of tomato products and we are down to our last two jars of green beans. Not to mention all of our pepper products have been used up for weeks now. So unless I want to spend a ton of money at Farmers Markets this year (which isn't an option) I really need to get my garden planted on time. I imagine I will need a lot of prayers this time around... Happy Gardening and Harvesting everyone.
I always use fine compost amended garden soil because it doesn't dry out so easy and is less algae prone. I gave up on those overpriced peat pellets, and they also can stunt root growth if you don't remove that netting when transplanting. I also reuse nursery packs and containers for as long as they last. The world has a big plastic waste problem that we can't ignore. Peat bogs aren't in infinite supply either from what I have heard. Local and free works for me.
batforjustice.............I do the same, works out really well, and cheaper. I like my plants already being used to my garden soil. The plants don't slow down on growth for the first two weeks of transplanting. The plants don't even realize they're being transplanted.
Well, my garden soil is heavy red clay, so not sure this will work for me. Trying to add compost, but they are putting a lot of woody material in all the bagged products, which my seeds do not like.
Mistake #1 -- Keep your cats out of your seedling room! uh. oh.
That's what I worry about trying to start them indoors!!! The garage seems too cold but the cats have free reign all inside. I know they will totally try to knock over the shelving or the plants themselves!
I have a room that none of my four cats are allowed in, that's where I will be growing my seedlings...
Had a cat that would destroy an entire garden in the matter of 5 minutes....chomping all my nice seed starts right down to the dirt.
Old thread but: You haven't seen devastation until you see what one cat can do to a tray of soil blocks.
Yessss!!! Haha My Oliver took a MASSIVE 💩 in my carrots and then had the audacity to cover it up with ALLLL THE SEEDLINGS.
Great video as always. Cheers Patrick
This is the most helpful video I've found so far. Thanks for the video!
Migardener has me hooked on promix
great job this is really a great idea been doing it for years if you go out in spring and buy a plant a pepper plant might cost you five bucks so think about $5 versus a penny it's a heck of a deal we all need to think about growing food. times are going to get harder food will become more scarce we should all be prepared and start doing just like this beautiful lady said grow from seed save a lot of money learn how to grow food very important for the future
Great video for beginners
Great info love your videos.
Grow light schedule: 16 hours (on) plus 6 hours (off)...what happens to the missing 2 hours?
I don’t understand why she would like your comment but not reply to you for clarification
It was probably a math mistake, maybe she meant (16 on & 8 off )or (18 on & 6 off ) 🤷🏻♀️
I put my grow lights on strobe during the extra 2 hours. My plants like to disco now.
@@DustinDonohue 🤣💀
So... has anyone figured out if it's 16 + 8, 18 + 6, or does she just live in another multiverse with 22 hour days?
Great tips, as always Kim. Just wondering which camera you film with? Very clear.
This just got more and more expensive as i went along. Plus today it is not possible to go out to shop here in WA. I did get some excellent ideas however and will use what I have. Thanks for a clear explanation.
I am starting to grow Basil plants indoor thanks to your videos. I won't give up.
Love you kim! Your awesome. Do you ever buy seeds from baker creek online? Also what about using recycled toilet paper rolls to make peat pots?
I actually use newspapers or paper bags to make mine. I roll them around those small tomato paste cans. I start everything in them and IFF I need to "transplant" into a bigger pot I make some that are larger using a whole peeled tomato can. Think they are 6oz and 28oz. I have never had an issue with transplant stress doing this. I have tried TP and paper towel rolls but they seem to take long to break down for me. I usually have to tear the bottom away but they do work in a pinch.
Kim like always nice video with great tips as well !
Here in Hawaii we've been having a real winter with cold wind and lots of rain.
Our garden is doing well with everything green and growing on the north side garden.
On the south side garden I need to replant all the beds ..... I'm working on it in the rain today. lol
~ Aloha, Greg
Hey Greg- sorry about your south garden but it sounds like the north side is going to carry you thru for a little while!! That’s dedication working thru the rain to get it done- kinda reminds me of CG!! Thanks for stopping by and try to stay a little dry!!
Thank you, tips of gardening!
Such a fantastic video packed with tips.
" your going to feel so good about feeding kale to your family" at least you will...my kids want to kill me lol
I started my pellets and they work amazing! I have multiple seeds popping up in one pellet though, will I need to get rid of them or is it okay to keep them all?
Love your channel. You are easy to follow and I always learn something. Thank you!
Her: don't be afraid to start seeds indoors, its super easy".
Me: thank you, I needed that, tell me!
What a great video, your tips seem pretty useful, thx for telling us.

So glad you enjoyed the video- are you growing anything right?? Thanks for watching!!
Cute
Great Video My Seedlings Are Doing Great Because Of Your Videos!!
This is the most informative video of all time ... THANK YOU
Thanks for the light ideas. What happens with the other 2 hours of the day? 😄
The sound quality on this video is incredibly good. It sounds like you're wearing a lavalier microphone (lapel mic) but I don't see one on your blouse. Either it's hidden really well, or you had some pro-quality audio equipment there next to the camera as you shot this. Usually on UA-cam, you see amateurs making videos and the sound quality is quite often the last thing they ever figure out how to get right. This video stands head and shoulders above most for sound quality, that's for sure! Can you let me in on how you achieved that?
She might have a boom mic above her.
Thanks, Jim. Wearing a lav. It’s just hidden. Thanks for watching! CameraGuy
Wow very helpful, thank you very much.
This is great! Thank you
Hey Kim, i started my tomato’s indoors in peat pellets the same day you posted the salsa garden video and mine haven’t sprouted. I water them and bring them out every day to get the sun because I don’t have a grow light and bring them back in for the night. Any idea why they haven’t sprouted. ?
RIGO BARRON I’ve been starting seeds indoors for a couple of years now and have a couple of thoughts. First don’t worry if your seeds fail to germinate. It happens! Soil temperature is very important to the seeds. It should be in the mid 70’s. Tomatoes are a tender warm season crop. To survive outside they won’t germinate until the soil is warm. So keep them indoors until they germinate. Light becomes important as soon as they germinate.
Once up, tomatoes will tolerate temperatures in the 60’s. Lower than that stresses them. Also right now if you’re in the USA your plants aren’t getting enough light. I’d guess we are getting 11 hours or less of daylight depending on where you live. Kim refers to her grow light videos in the salsa video. Watch them. She has some really inexpensive options for a grow light. The advice is great too. Hope that helps.
Bruce Redd thank you 🙏🏼
