  • Welcome to the second video of the Ellora Caves series. Today we will be going through Caves No. 1 to 9 which were once places of Worship, Meeting, Residence for the Buddhist Monks. In the video, you can see our guide explaining about the Caves.
We can see the sculptures of Hariti, Jambhaala, Apsaras and Angel. These are goddess of wealth in Buddism. In Hinduism Hariti and Jambhaala are Kubera and Lakshmi.
Hariti, is one such deity who was essentially a demoness and after being converted to the Righteous Path by the Buddha himself, eventually became one of Buddhism's and India's most revered Mother-Goddesses.
The guide demonstrated how the chanting gets echoed Buddham Sharanam Gacchhaami. The placement of the Rooms is the reason for getting the echo.
Cave No. 1 has 8 rooms for meditation.
Cave No. 2 is the Worship Cave having 12 great square pillars to support, lined with sculptures of seated Buddhas.
Cave No. 3 and 4 have the same design as Cave 2 but in poor condition, which were the Rooms for the Monks.
You can see water flowing over Cave No.5, which is coming from a village called Rauza, now known by the name Khuldabad. The tomb of Aurangazeb is in Khuldabad. There is also a Hanuman temple known as Bhadra Maruti in which the idol is in the sleeping posture. There is a dam in the village which overflows during rainy season, which used to fall inside Cave No. 5 earlier. But now the Archeological Society of India have made it to fall outside to preserve the Cave structure.
Cave No.5 is known as Maharwada Cave, used by the local Mahar tribes as shelter during monsoon. It is about 117 feet deep and 59 feet wide. There are two long stone benches placed at the center. The roof is supported by 24 pillars on each side. This used to be the dining area for the Monks.
Cave No. 6 to 9 are connected together. Cave No.6 was carved in the 7th Century AD. It has two finest sculptures of Ellora. On the left is Goddess Tara and opposite her to the right is Mahamayuri the Buddhist Goddess of learning.
Cave No.7 is a large plain vihara which is about 51 feet wide by 43 feet deep and the roof supported by four columns.
Cave No.8 has two rooms and a shrine with a circumbulatory passage. The shrine has the usual dwarapalakas and their attendants at the door. Inside is the seated Buddha with his attendants, but in this case Padmapani has four arms, holding the lotus and deer skin over his shoulders.
