So wonderful. Jerry's guitar takes off like a freight train. Love how they tune for 5 minutes on German TV. Thank you. I listen every morning. Makes me want to greet the day with reckless abandon! "Ah ten Shupe" or whatever Phil yells out in the beginning. Ah ten Shupe indeed! BTW, it starts at 2:00
Bret ! These were the years I saw the Dead :) funzy fun to dance to - recently learned that they wrote this song cuz they started touring- in the beginning- in Alabama.
So funny. I came across this and settled in for seven minutes of jamming and they took three of those minutes to tune up.....hahahahahahahahah.....Love these guys
starts a little rough but I Love hearing Brent do that little solo on the moog like in the album with thlittle pitch bend wheel. Not something he did much later on. Jerry's second solo is pretty cool.
Singularly kick-ass Dead jam! The song itself starts at about 2:05; hard-core Deadheads might enjoy the pre-song noise! And Jerry is really ON, so I'll allow him some "poetic license" with his own lyrics!
never even close to top of my favorites list rarely changed from show to show ... rare for a Dead tune lotta sick news lately has me feeling like I needed to hear it
Frank Zappa band had everything tuned when they came on stage The Dead took 20 minutes sometimes to tune and no that's not a joke i wish they had guitar tuners in them days
1985 first exposure to the grateful dead on a tape labeled ROCK SOUTHERN STYLE , Now the dead is forever tattooed in my arm !!!!!!!!! Steal your face !!
way to low-key mention w/o mentioning that they gave Tennessee a way better billing than Alabama despite never playing in Tennessee (or did they finally get there their last few years). not obsessive enough to research it.
as for hater above, if ya can't dig it . . . leave it. if the bud didn't teach you that, maybe the buddha will . . . or not. actually what the songs about i think. I Loved hearing Keith play the piano, among the greatest rock and roll piano players ever, but sometimes ya just gotta get down and leave and walk away. . .
You might want to think that, but the Grateful Dead have toured in places such as Germany, England, France, and Egypt as well as the United States. Even though they are MOSTLY worshipped in the USA, this doesn't mean they're not one of the greatest bands.
I like the studio version better it is faster with a rock beat not a hippy beat and the solo's are too long here and not too tight- the studio version is so much more check berry
April 80 is best when Bob wears the bunny ears I don't know the exact date I can't even find it on you tube studio is tight too so is this one I love hearing anything by them cause you just can't predict what they are going to do
What the hell are you talking about, boy? GD haven't marked a milestone in rock music like RS, Beatles or The Who did. They are only worshipped in the USA, but in the rest of the world they remain mainly unnoticed. Being the most genuine American band doesn't mean they are the world's best!! The Earth has got more than 50 states, never forget it.
@dimpledick3inch I've seen deadheads, they were in San Diego one time and I remember how terrible their body odor was when I walked in the store. It was phucking rancid, they all smelled like a backed up toilet or something.
you just dropped into tell folks they stink? posing as a BagOfRats maybe makin' you grumpy! pose as flowers in spring or something a bit more festive and the neighborhood might taste better
Don't get me wrong, I like some of their songs (some others are for me unbearable). And I beg your pardon: also Barry Manilow, Peter Frampton or Europe have toured the world and that doesn't mean they are good! Besides, what taylorfish25 writes is simply crap, that's why I replied him. They are really different, but GD don't stand along Stones, Kinks et al. The greatest rock/pop act ever to come from the USA is Bob Dylan. He's not my idol, but he's your best one.
I love that they tune for 2 minutes after their introduction! Classic!
just a little pre-show smoke break
not just for the band
I was going to say it...Jerry had to finish his cig
"Before I have to hit him I hope he's got the sense to run" great line
Gotta have the whole part.. 32 teeth in a jaw bone, Alabama shooting for none.
So wonderful. Jerry's guitar takes off like a freight train. Love how they tune for 5 minutes on German TV. Thank you. I listen every morning. Makes me want to greet the day with reckless abandon! Allan Ostermann i think i just realized i need more reckless abandon in my life. thx
+Allan Ostermann That's what I love about this song.. Hit the ground running. If you can, see the one of them doing this on SNL.. Smoke'n fast.
German: old school. Fool. AlteSchule
What does ah ten shupe mean?
I've listened to this same version at least 50 times.
One of Jerry's most challenging leads. Jumping many keys in chrographic style

One of my favorite from them
starts a little rough but I Love hearing Brent do that little solo on the moog like in the album with thlittle pitch bend wheel. Not something he did much later on. Jerry's second solo is pretty cool.

Exactly! Flubbed the verse again but who cares?
Ha! We do ❤
This is my personal favorite version!
Uptown 1204 1979 to me the best Alabama ...Jerrys leads that night were siiiiiiick
never even close to top of my favorites list
rarely changed from show to show ... rare for a Dead tune
lotta sick news lately has me feeling like I needed to hear it
Rest in Peace Jerry. Thank you so much.🤝🏻
Great rock tune! Dylan actually covered this on his tour in 95.
dylan covering the Dead ..no that is cool . Dead been covering Dylan . I had the pleasure of seeing Dylan and The Dead . Warfield
I saw the second show after this one, 4/30/81, and Jerry still played on stage right. The Phil Zone bounced a coupla times.
Frank Zappa band had everything tuned when they came on stage The Dead took 20 minutes sometimes to tune and no that's not a joke i wish they had guitar tuners in them days
The very last strum on his 🎸 makes you say GD!
Brent was a master of his craft.
The Who also played this concert. Townshend joined Dead onstage later in show for Not Fade Away
Awesome!!!!Please post some more from Germany!!!!

I was Simply Ten (years of “age” then!
1985 first exposure to the grateful dead on a tape labeled ROCK SOUTHERN STYLE , Now the dead is forever tattooed in my arm !!!!!!!!! Steal your face !!
Festival Express. Great flick. Rick Danko singing while wasted on the train.
On fire by solo 2!
This is the Dead at their best 20 years of on stage practse
Skip to two minutes in.
and it sure is fun to play on rb2! hell yea! love love love.
Smokin crater
You'd think that the GD would have people tune their guitars prior to them getting on stage!😂
..,yeah..... right....
.........yeah...... right.......
😇GVB ❤😊
I'll trade you my shirt for a grilled cheese.
About as hard as they were able to rock...
For the Tennessee win over Bama yesterday!
October 15th 2022!😢
way to low-key mention w/o mentioning that they gave
Tennessee a way better billing than Alabama

because of this song, they call me Major Domo Billy Bojangles ha
well this was made in 1981 was it that or was it jerry
So, um, why does Bobby have to turn a knob on his controller before every song? Damn controller.
The board is hammered as flat shit
I'll be Very Grateful one day, Hopefully. Outlived ALL HIS WIVES AND ALL HIS CHILDREN, AGAIN!
New Guinea actually over 250years old Whoah Amen

Not a Chuck Berry song, but yeah
Inspired by, though. I think that's what he meant.
Buck 🍒 Cherry
for some reason at first i cant hear jerry
Get Scwhifty!
Jerry.
My band covers this and I always fuck em up too lol...
You might want to think that, but the Grateful Dead have toured in places such as Germany, England, France, and Egypt as well as the United States. Even though they are MOSTLY worshipped in the USA, this doesn't mean they're not one of the greatest bands.
Not the best at what they did…. They were the only ones to do what they did.
@gtz1975
I thought it was James Woods.
my favorite song by the dead and they BUTCHERED it this night
Vicky and Casey Getaway
what's wrong with the mic levels??
what's up with the sound?? lol you can tell Jerry was flustered and bobby didn't even sing... but always still amazing
Dwight from The Office could play Phil in a movie about the dead.. Just say'n. I'm not high.. you're high..
quit casting stones at glass houses unless yr willing
to sweep up the glass afterwards
@smokesomebuddah420 because of rock band
It is amazing that garcia even had teeth left in his mouth after this show.Check him out after the drums it is pretty funny.
coyote023 that is some spotlight they got on him.. and its being lasered right into his eyes by his glasses!
jerry totally butchered the lyrics, but man can he play and when he know the lyrics i love them before he lost em
Ibanez custom - "The Cowboy"
mydland solo is exactly as the studio and honestly that's ok
Jeez how much acid did I do in the 80s because these guys are sloppy🥴
I like the studio version better it is faster with a rock beat not a hippy beat and the solo's are too long here and not too tight- the studio version is so much more check berry

They sound southern
What does phil say ?
Probably says something in German, what I don't know.
"they won't let me sing?"
so this is where that whole thing began
duran wip etham up
Wadda you mean???
Start the video at 2:05. Save yourself a couple minutes.
that's no way to get an authentic GD concert experience from
a youtube vid
Isn't this the show they did with The Who?

trolls troll together stick together..
@smokesomebuddah420 Because people like you don't ignore them and let the trolling die.
You've got a point. Learn how to write before you do it.
God this is bad
Agreed it's one of my favorites by them and this version just doesn't do it
@dimpledick3inch I've seen deadheads, they were in San Diego one time and I remember how terrible their body odor was when I walked in the store. It was phucking rancid, they all smelled like a backed up toilet or something.
