Jerry Garcia. Great guitar player and a vehicle of great joy and an incredible sense of humor. Often a bit of a paradox with his short life. He was unique in where he was from and how he did it. And for all his weaknesses which in reality may have been very few I loved and love the man. He was able to express his soul through his music and that was a blessing. I pray he's alright. Life the ultimate test.
The Dead never gets credit for it, but what they did here, and in San Francisco and NYC in the fall of 1980 - playing full acoustic sets in their live shows - was the forerunner of MTV Unplugged.
Jerry Garcia is the best soloist to ever grace the face of the earth! - Probably the universe! And with Bob Weir holding the reigns you know everything's going to work out fine.
Thanks. I toured with the Dead from '88 to '91. Yes, I smoked a little pot and did LSD about once a month if I felt like it but it was such a small part of the over all experience. What amazed me was the willingness of people to help each other, to smile, dance, and laugh with strangers. I don't get high anymore but the magic is as strong as ever, maybe stronger.
i was born in 1980 and spent many an evening with my dad listening to his old grateful dead albums while mom was out working. Great memories, wish i could jam in a band like that
Who else had dedicated the entirety of their lives to the music they loved so much, and to the people who loved them the same. The Grateful Dead - That's who.
Ladies and gents, there is a reason when the genius passes on the only thing the rest can move is is the coattail of that beautiful genius slowing down what once was ..... had some great times
a lot of haters who can't help it they will never have what we have a love of music which is outside of most folks capability no flash,no bull shit just great music
Same wolf as the Zodiac Killer..... Himself already dead and he almost cut my heart out from the Land of the Dead.... Truly Terrifying, and all I said was:
Grateful Dead Will always live on. This is the soul's music and I mean soul music. My last request shall be "When I'm gone and dead... Please before you rest me to bed.... In that old cold dirt box they call a bed... Play some grateful dead tunes... and let all know that I am gratefully dead"
Much like a lot of the Dead's beautiful music this song is hauntingly mellow. Dealing with life and/or a greater power in a sort of begrudging acceptance. Beautiful. Don't murder me.
today was my first time hearing these guys in my life. i was security for them today at the XL center in Hartford CT. All i can say is WOW. Thanks for a great time guys i am a new fan.
What a sweet song and a wonderful performance. A song like "Dire Wolf" by a band like The Grateful Dead on a major American TV show -- something you won't be seeing any time soon (ever) on the radioactive hearth. Thanks for this gem of bygone America.
I remember watching this when it originally aired. I was in college. It was so cool. But all we could do was talk about it. We had no vcrs or anything. THANKYOU youtube and whoever put it up. wwjd?
I love many different types of music. The real problem today is if 1 band has an origional sound, every record company gets a band to mimic it. Nothing compares to this era. The sound of each band was their own and you could tell which band was playing just by hearing a couple of notes.
For WHATEVER Reason I was ALWAYS drawn to the Folksy "Jug" Band Dead tunes MOST !!! 'til THIS day !!! (26 Aug 24) ......shout out if you agree or disagree - Either Way - JUST shout out if you were ONE WAY or ANOTHER in "LOVE" with the Dead !!!
While I consider my self to be a "dead head" I don't like all their music. But I always loved their attitude. They played to play music, not to be famous or to make millions of dollars. The music was always at the heart of what they did. Take a toke on my Jerry!
I've been very unlucky throughout my life and I rarely happy or able to enjoy anything. I woke up in yet another terrible mood and I just wish I could dream forever. But when I watch this song I can't help but break out in a huge grin. Was I ever cheated being born in this useless generation. I hate my life & everything in it, but this song is a rare ray of sunshine :) Cheers everyone!
I don’t think people (Unless you’re a musician) realize how intricate that solo was. So melodic and made up on the spot!! Most players play it safe and stay on the scale or the melody. Jerry was the greatest guitar player of all time, and the most creative mind in music. Period.
@@lorenzogalasso6252 lol all jokes aside this is one of their best performances of Dire Wolf. This is the video that made me get a guitar btw lol I was 13-14 and showed my gramma this video and begged her for a guitar, and she actually got me in the car and drove to the local music shop and got me one!
Lucky to have seen nearly 200 Dead shows with Jerry. Many shows were life changing events. They may not be the best at what they do, But they are the only ones who do what they do.
Samezies; there's a video of me singing the words to "roe jimmy" when i was 3 years old, thats probably my dad's favorite story ever, i saw them at msg when i was like 4...i got sick and to this day my mom's convinced that whatever i ate there was laced with something. I'm 21 now and I'm going to see the Dead in Buffalo in about a week with my dad, its cool how those kinda things come full circle, eh?
I dont know who I saw there. I just know that we had a good time. I am a rap fan just doing security for Deadheads as they call it. I really enjoyed myself. The fans are great.
Always one of my favories - showcased here beautifully, The Dead have more in common with artists like Bob Dylan and The Band than they do with the high powered rockers and should not be compared to them - true Americana the way it looked in the '60's and '70's. Gerry Garcia and Robert Hunter. produced some of the finest songs of their era, including this one.
this song also reminds me of when i was living in the lola pass, bitterroot vally, of montana. there were some sweet times there peace pot and micro dot
wonderful song too many people think they understand the dead experience and write it off.but they don't,if you can explain it you don't get it .words don't say enough it's much deeper!
Just a brief history on this song. It's not about dealing with life and/or a greater power. There was serial killer on the loose at that time that lived in his area making a lot of folks nervous. This song reflects that. Jerry talked about it in an old interview. I'm not trying to sound like a know-it-all or belittle your comment. The song is hauntingly mellow. Just adding a little trivia to the conversation. : )
Beneath every great band, there's a great rug.
They talk about the importance of those rugs on this podcast! soundcloud.com/cbs-news-radio/dead-sound
Ties the room together
Garcia was dope on acoustic
@@rogerush Well hey that's just like your opinion man.. 🤘
Dig it !
The more I watch Garcia, the more I realize he was just a monster acoustic guitarist.
His little licks he interplayed into their acoustic playing is so wonderful
At first I read that as "just another acoustic guitarist" hahaha
Hi Bobby. Love you alos

Spot on my friend. May the ethereal void have been kind to our friend Jerry.

The exact performance that turned me on to the Dead.

Man, gettin wasted and listeninnn to this is one of lifes great pleasures....
i was born in 1980 and spent many an evening with my dad listening to his old grateful dead albums while mom was out working. Great memories, wish i could jam in a band like that
deadset/reckoning series of shows = some of the best.
Man it seems like yesterday I could spend half the summer with these guys. Now I'm grown up and Jerry's dead. I hate that "He's Gone" forever.
Who else had dedicated the entirety of their lives to the music they loved so much, and to the people who loved them the same. The Grateful Dead - That's who.
"Cut my deck to the queen of spades, but the cards were all the same..." :)
GREAT "line" isn't it ?

Excellent. Nice to see Jerry looking that way (very early 80s)with his voice at it's peak. Miss him...
a lot of haters who can't help it they will never have what we have a love of music which is outside of most folks capability no flash,no bull shit just great music
I HAVE to listen to this everyday. It makes me smile so much!
Me too
I love the lyrics "don't murder me"--so outlandish and effective when said to a wolf that's 600 pounds of sin!
Same wolf as the Zodiac Killer..... Himself already dead and he almost cut my heart out from the Land of the Dead.... Truly Terrifying, and all I said was:

Best song ever!!!!!!!
one of the best songs ever written!! Dead for life!!
Much like a lot of the Dead's beautiful music this song is hauntingly mellow. Dealing with life and/or a greater power in a sort of begrudging acceptance.
Beautiful. Don't murder me.

The great raconteur ( Jerry) having too much fun telling the story. Jerry's guitar work and performance with Hunter'[s lyrics= magic!
amazing tune. jerry tears it up in this version.

i could frown for days and jerry will make me smile any day
HERE HERE!! As I am 16 years old. I went to see The Dead in Worcester on Saturday.
man this is the best grateful dead song

Rock'n'Roll isn't dead. This is better than most the stuff you hear these days.
I listen to this video every week when I send out mail at work sitting at the computer. HAHA

He is a musical genius the way he does these intricate jazzy solos is outstanding no one plays like him.

I run a jewelery design company called direwolf designs. I get a lot of the "oh like game of thrones" comments. I just shake my head. 600lbs of sin!
great footage. thanx!
Jerry is in such great voice here. It was so rare there at the end... it's a great video, really great.
