    Great to see a PD ranch horse competing........and doing so good! All the hard work put into what you do is worth it! As you know a well bred, good solid barrel horse is worth a lot! Takes an athletic, fast horse with a brain to take the pressure of the road! Your bloodlines deserve attention in the performance world!!

    By now you guys know I'm a dedicated fan. I did lots of ground work because I didn't have the skill you all have. Shocking, I started every 18 month to a cart. When they started driving quarter horses at national shows, I did it. Driving them for 6 months sets them up for riding. Also public stable is light years away from your beautiful ranch. Thank you for all your video.

    I lije the 90 ride idea. Even when my QH gelding was age 5 when he went to a trainer ut was for 90 days. I went to work with the trainer and my horse after 30 days. The time was well worth it. Every horse learns dif and the 90 days gives the trainer the time to get the horse to understand what is expected. And as Henson mentioned safer. Also the trainer will be better able to advise the owner on wha to expect of that horse.

    Oh the old hay string. We do that here. But i recently stopped doing the tie to the haystring with my mare. In her case she is prone to being headshy and would pull back at any opportunity. So to save the lead rope i would use the haystring. Anyway it started to be a thing. So i ended up just letting the rope and fence take the hit. The rope and fence held the one time she couldn't go anywhere that time. So far she hasn't tried again. So yea its great but not for a mare that takes advantage of it haha

    Interesting rationale about bumping / kicking your legs as part of training Henson talks about here. I've noticed he does that a lot and wondered why, esp with spurs. In other videos I've seen Troy (or someone else I don't recall) flappin' his legs so much and conspicuously , I was expecting (i) blood, (ii) thrown rider or (iii) horse and rider get airborne together and fly off into the sunset! Henson's approach seems almost subtle by comparison.

    • @PaintedDesertRanch
      @PaintedDesertRanch  Рік тому +3

      No two people ride the same. I like to say- if it works, it works. If there’s blood and hurt people then obviously it’s not working and other methods should and probably will eventually be used. I appreciate that Troy is willing to learn and is trying very hard in progressing his horsemanship. (P.S. spurs aren’t intended to draw blood- they’re a very effective tool for cowboys) Thank you for watching and thank you for voicing your observations.

    Thank You PDR for answering my question. When do you guys deworn your horses? Is Flicka still at the Ranch for her start or is she back with her owners? When do you guys cut or castrate the colts?

    • @PaintedDesertRanch
      @PaintedDesertRanch  Рік тому +1

      Deworming is done when needed- fall and spring time for sure. Flicks is still here, she will be going home soon. We don’t castrate any babies/weanlings that leave. We castrate the others anytime between their yearling and two year old years
