My mom was a big fan of Sting and would play Sting albums loud on the speakers while cleaning or cooking. She died of cancer this year, now every Sting song now brings back sweet memories of her. His music is beautiful and sentimental to me forever.

Dear Sher M, I guess I would have loved your mother, too. This song reminds me of a very special moment, when I was on vacation in Umbria, Italy at the age of seventeen in 1987, listening this song on a walkman, sitting there between olive trees on a warm and sunny afternoon, just a stonethrow from Assisi. There I realised, that Creation is God, that Love must be Truth and that there's a reason for everything and a place for everyone of us, even after death and not only in our hearts.
Believe, someday we all will meet again, and we will laugh in a joy and dance on their graves... Hope you meet your mother then there too!

Aw, bless you Sher. Music is so powerful. It is one of the few ways I connect to my departed father. Time, place, and feelings that are unique and without description. So sorry for your loss. I am so glad you have that music to link you, so glad she played it around the house. I keep trying with my daughter, but she has her earphones in and wonders why. Because I know that it is these little things that one day will hopefully remind her of me. Of a time together. And Sting, well, he is sublime. Take care. Ps. Heed what Sven says, he is a wise one....

His mother had just died. He was so full of deep emotion and pain, you could actually feel it. I later learned that he was dealing with her death per an interview, and I always suspected there was something so much deeper in the lyrics when I first heard it. His pain is immense and so apparent. The Police have followed every stage of my life, the good, the bad, the sad, and they are always there to pull me through,,,always.

I don't know whether you appreciate this or not, but for the rabid musician who can capture or pick up basic arrangements via ear....he is one of the most vexing artists to try and identify chord signatures and patterns....his Police music was simple chords but incredibly intricate arrangements with Andy Summers that made even that music difficult to mimic but Gordon took it all to a different level when he went solo....this stuff is impossible to figure out.

_"Be still my beating heart"_ is the start phrase to this fascinating composition by Sting. The phrase is already out there in varied literary forms going back 300 years or more. No doubt Sting has pulled out that poetic phrase from his literary knowledge and built his song around it. I hadn't known of Sting's lyrics until having heard the arresting phrase the-day-before-yesterday quoted by a UK radio presenter _(James O’Brien on LBC Radio)_ that made me want to research the phrase online - which led to historic literary explanations and then to Sting's evocative singing. Sting - I've written a message of thanx to you and secured it in an empty bottle (not plastic) and chucked it into the sea with an embedded chip that will hopefully propel the bottle via satellite navigation and lunar tidal pulling power to your home area. Please look out for it in about ten years. 🌜

This is my favourite song by Sting and one of the best he has ever written. To me 'Turtles', Nothing Like The Sun" are the two best solo albums for mood and great songs. I'm not saying "Ten Sommoner's Tales" is not great, it's a masterpiece, but in a different way. If there is one song that sticks in my mind for nearly all of the 26 years since I first heard it, it's this one. An out and out classic!

Yes, that is a great track. The Soul Cages disappointed me back in 1991 but in recent years I learned to appreciate it. It is in fact a good album. It's Sting moving into storytelling rather than the usual 'this is what's happening in the world' and socio-politics of his earlier works. Island of Souls is fantastic, along with Mad About You. Side two of the LP was a quieter affair but the maturity is there with some strong lyrics and subtle melodies. I really like 'Straight To My Heart' from 'Nothing Like The Sun'. It's a superb song. Sting is a great musician and songwriter no doubt. 'Ten Summoner's Tales is a masterpiece but 'Mercury Falling' is pretty poor and this is one I don't like now. The casual soul driven songs don't work for Sting on this one and it portrays a man with very little to say in 1996. Then again I love 'I was Brought To My Senses' I guess!

    • @KRAZEEIZATION
      @KRAZEEIZATION 10 років тому +2

I listened to 'Blue Turtles' this week and some of the lyrics are a little corny especially in 'Russians' the line "Mr. Oppenheimer's deadly toy"! Sting was very egotistical then and very righteous. A lot of people hated his 'I'm telling you' attitude. He was coming across as the intellectual giant of pop, campaigning for the Rain Forrest, Amnesty and trying to save the world. Still he delivered what is the most important thing for a creative artist, the music. Who cares about his views when he gives us 'Fortress Around Your Heart' and 'Children's Crusade'. I actually met him last summer the night before he played in Cork city, Ireland. I had a photo taken with him and he was very quiet. I even shared a joke with himself and Trudy. I'm not a celebrity hound but it was great to see a man that wrote some great songs that you liked growing up, in the flesh. I would have loved to do a quick interview as I am a film maker myself, but he was after an evening meal and heading back to his hotel. I saw the concert the following night and he rocked 'em all. I saw him in Dublin in '96 also.

I remember 1991 and the Soul Cages which I found, back in the days, pretty boring. I forgot Sting for 20 years or so. But I came back to his music through Turtles & Like the sun. Great albums of my teenage days. Great memories.

***** That reminds me of - but in a very different sense - when The Police came and played at Aztec Stadium at San Diego State University when I was kid - I guess about 12 or 13, when they were at the peak of their original success (right around the time Synchronicity was released, '83 or so). Aztec Stadium is basically like a big bowl. We lived on the eastern edge of campus, next to what was then a sprawling parking lot (now a huge parking garage), probably around a mile-1.5 miles from the Stadium. Me and some friends were outside, walking back to my house. The way the sound projected out from the bowl it sounded like The Police were playing in a boom box right next to us. We went to the campus and of course had no money for tickets. We kept trying to find a way to sneak in around the fencing they had put up to keep people (like us non-ticket-payers) out. No such luck. Lots of security guards around and they kept watching me and my buddies. Never did find a way to sneak in but still it sounded like they were right next to us playing. Closest I've ever gotten to hear The Police play. Sorry to hear your experience wasn't so great. Many concerts these days are like that - huge stadiums to maximize tour revenue, very expensive tickets that are 2-10x face value because of Stubhub, and the seats where you'd get the most enjoyment are often thousands, easy. Nothing like when I was a kid and saw The Who, Kiss, Rush, Judas Priest, Aerosmith... and you could actually afford it (or, well, my parents could anyway). Anytime my 13 y.o. wants to go to a concert, it's almost impossible to afford even crappy tickets and because everything is online most face value tickets are sold in seconds.

Now more than ever, independent and amateur artists have a platform for wide audiences, it's just that it isn't through the same mediums that it was back then. In stead of the radio or TV, it's the internet. And if you know where to look, you'll see it. Like a secret garden.

I love this song. What makes it uber special is the presence of Andy Summers on guitar producing a really haunting performance. A tantalsing glimps of maybe what the Police would have been doing in 1987 if they hadn't called it a day.

shioriryukaze But, it was a part of mainstream music, as it peaked at #15 on the general U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Chart, so great music isn't always mainstream, but isn't always underground either. It's all good, because we both like this track. :-)

    Be still my beating heart
It would be better to be cool
It's not time to be open just yet
A lesson once learned is so hard to forget
    Be still my beating heart
Or I'll be taken for a fool
It's not healthy to run at this pace
The blood runs so red to my face
I've been to every single book I know
To soothe the thoughts that plague me so
I sink like a stone that's been thrown in the ocean
My logic has drowned in a sea of emotion
    Stop before you start
    Be still my beating heart
    Restore my broken dreams
    Shattered like a falling glass
I'm not ready to be broken just yet
A lesson once learned is so hard to forget
    Be still my beating heart
You must learn to stand your ground
It's not healthy to run at this pace
The blood runs so red to my face
I've been to every single book I know
To soothe the thoughts that plague me so
    Stop before you start
    Be still my beating heart
    Never to be wrong
Never to make promises that break
It's like singing in the wind
Or writing on the surface of a lake
And I wriggle like a fish caught on dry land
And I struggle to avoid any help at hand
I sink like a stone that's been thrown in the ocean
My logic has drowned in a sea of emotion
    Stop before you start
    Be still my beating heart...

@@bellachance1206 Oh, I agree. I disliked Sting for years because I thought he was so conceited. Then I started listening to his music a lot more carefully and realized he could look like Frankenstein and I'd still love his music. I threw that comment out there to see what people would respond. And I still think he's conceited but I also think he is a gifted musician. I also loved Ray Orbison and John Denver, neither of whom had great looks going for them. That's the reason I hated it when videos came out. A song would come on in the car, and my daughter's friend would say, "Oh, I love this video!" She's stopped listening to the music and was affected by the video, which I hated and still do.

The actress in the MV believed to be Mitzi Martin. Her appearance reminds me of Patrick Nagels works back in the 80's, with the contrast of
dark hair to her ghostly skin which leaves her blue eyes as the attention grabber. A mere glance into her eyes is hypnotic in the MV. Her prancing movements is the center of attention but merely for brief moments. Lastly just to let you know, if you haven't figured it out by now, I almost forgot to mention..... this is one of my favorite MV's.

Yeah, i like how you put this. I was only talking today to some friends about Sting. If you didn't know his back catalogue, yet some familiarity with his music, you would hear a song and not know what decade let alone what year the song was released. His music defies popular music convention. He melds reggae, latin, eastern folk, funk, straight ahead grooves twisted with odd time signatures. He also had the very best musicians working with him. He has ensured his longevity and relevance...
