I used to drive my son to school on my bike, both of us singing this song in our imperfect English. I remember thinking, please God, make this moment last for ever.
A moment that will last forever as long the generations that remember this song are alive. Millennials will remember this song, but what about future generations?
@@ildart8738Some millenial might one day make a hit movie and use it as a soundtrack. And the cycle might repeat with future generations.Just look at what happened to Running up that hill .
@condurachesorin Well that's debatable, because Placebo did a cover of Kate Bush's "Running Up This Hill" and went further with their version then she ever did on her own until the "Stranger Things" show. Most people thought Placebo were the original recording artist.
@@CarpeNoctem0917 It happenes to a lot of songs. Heck, when I was kid I thought that The Man who sold the world was a Nirvana original. It took Metal Gear Solid for me to start going down that rabbit hole. Same thing could happen to someone in the future with Fields of Gold.
This song brings tears to my eyes. My wife had cancer and listened to this song all the time coz our daughter sang it for her. She’s now 16 years in remission and I thank the lord, my life could have been so different having to bring our daughter up by myself. They are extremely close now. ❤️❤️
My father used to play this song a lot when I was in Kindergarten and Elementary School. It gave him a lot of comfort because he was still grieving the loss of my paternal grandfather (his father) more than 10 years after his death. A drunk driver that was drag racing killed my Pop-Pop back in 1978. Now my own father is up there with him. Rest in peace. Both of you.
'Fields of Gold' is that song that whenever you hear it playing anywhere, your mind, heart, and soul instantly reset to it and you believe it to be the most breathtakingly beautiful song ever made.
I'm a 53 year old, shaven headed, gym going, van driving builder, but I can't listen to more than a couple of lines of this song without welling up, It just reminds me of warm summer evenings walking with all the dogs I have ever owned, loved and lost. I'm not a spiritual person , and in my mind when you die , the lights go out and that's your lot, but if I'm wrong I hope that if just even for one evening I can have them all back together at one time , and we might walk in fields of gold .

My dad died today. He told me to play this when his time comes. I'll always remember him with this masterpiece. I'll show it to my future children alongside their grandfathers pictures and stories.
Played this for my Dad multiple times the past few days as he was dying. It was a favourite of his that he would often be humming to himself. Always said it reminded him of his younger days growing up in Aberdeenshire, Scotland a part of the world with seas of gold barley in the summer months. I will always miss you Dad but I will always remember you through this song. Sleep tight.
I'm sorry about your loss 😢. My dad died 4 years ago and he was from Aberdeenshire too. These songs remind me of him. I wish I could be with him. We would listen to songs on the radio and we would sing them together.
Sorry for your loss! Its hard enough when someone passes naturally but when you do not expect it its so much worse. My brother committed suicide in a solo car crash September 2 two years ago. Its very difficult I mean I am at the anger stage of grief. But I am also upset that I can never ask him any questions. It may sound odd to some but its just how I feel right now.. Again Im sorry for your loss
Jonathan Winfield I’m so sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing your story. Suicide is a hard one to process. I won’t say I understand why you’re going through, because no one understands what any of use is going through. Grief is a very hard thing to process and we will go through many stages of it. For instance, Even though my husband’s death baffled investigators and we suspect that he may have suffered a stroke or seizure on the road (he had a concussion 2 days before)... I still felt very angry toward him for a while. I told him to go get check after the concussion but he staunchly refused. We also have 2 little ones under the age of 4 and one on the way. This lasted about 2 weeks and I am now in the acceptance stage and just going over everything we built together.
I think so many simply did not understand this song. It’s about couple meeting, romance, “i never made promises lightly, and there have been some that I’ve broken” marriage vow, having children, and “Tell the sun in his jealous sky” is when she dies, and is in heaven. Fields of Gold is of course Fields of Wheat around Barley. In the end it truly is a masterpiece. A very beautiful short tale of life, romance and ending.
I think you're right to say many don't understand this song. Your interpretation was very insightful and for sure from now one I'm gonna look at this song differently. And to think of it.... The sky is said to be jealous because he actually died (since it says "YOU'LL remember me.... You can tell the sun in its jealous sky that we walked it fields of gold" Towards the end it said "see the children run as the sun goes down..." implying that they got married and had children of their own.
@@glennross85 wrong? Sting wrote the track after he bought a house near a barley field. The sunsets and the colours of the field helped inspired the lyrics, along with his love for wife Trudie Styler, whom he married in 1992.
This song never fails to bring a lump to the throat and a hint of a tear in the eye. One of the most beautiful and haunting songs done by anyone. As I write this - the sun is setting over the beach near home as my two children laugh happily in the other room after a lovely family day. I wish I could freeze this moment in time. Sting's finest moment as a solo artist.
We have all had those moments. Now my children are grown and gone and I am a widow. I miss being a young mother, wife and my two little boys. My life was so full and it was over way too fast. Now, I am just the old lady who lives down the street.

This song is an absolute masterpiece! It's so large, but so simple and moving. Take a moment to listen to the different instruments and you'll understand what I mean. As a musician and songwriter/beginning producer, this song is just brilliant!
Man... exactly the same. And the best part? I wasn’t even born in the 90’s. Somehow I feel nostalgic about a time period that I never experienced. Dreaming of how my life would be...
This song would come on the radio in the 90s when my mom would drive me home from school. It was a beat up Honda accord, we didnt have much but we had each other and beautiful memories like this.
This song makes me feel like I'm in heaven, walking with mom in the fields of gold, holding hands, I can smell her beautiful fragrance in the wind, walking towards the sunset and She's telling me how happy she is in heaven. I miss you mom.. I miss you so much
Tasmina Pinky: What beautiful memories and feelings you have of your Mother. I believe you will definitely get to be with her again soon and do that thing which you desire. 😊 God bless you!
Such a powerful song that brings back many fond memories within our lifetime. Sadly, time waits for nobody and we're only on earth temporary, so cherish every day like its your last...
This song is so deep and original that it transports you to the abyss of the universe, creating memories of the good old days. Thanks Sting masterpiece
According to Sting, he got inspired to write this song after he bought a 16th-century manor house, which was surrounded by fields of barley. During the Summer the wind would blow over the shimmering surface of barley, and it just looked like a sea of gold. This is such a beautiful song with such beautiful lyrics.
I love love this, my husband passed 41 years ago..I was 32. He was the love of my life. We did walk on fields of Gold for 11 years. When my time comes, I will have this at my service. Sting is amazing and so is the version from Celtic Womam.

My beautiful mother recently passed suddenly, but prior to her passing.. for the last few months she absolutely loved this song and constantly had it on repeat. It will forever remind me of her.🙏🏻💕
The song has an energy like when a man was always rebellious and didn't understand all the love stuff. But suddenly it had caught him! Suddenly he had arrived.
Does anyone ever have that feeling of hearing just such a great song that it makes them just have a tingly feeling inside? Like it sorta feels like crying, except you aren't? That's what this song makes me feel.
The first time I heard this song was like 3 months ago, when my dad was driving me home from South Dakota. It was at night, and while we listened, it was totally silent as we looked at the lights of the city. Great experience.
My precious mum died after a fiece battle with cancer this was played at her funeral it means so much. The last 4 years we lay in fields of gold in everything we did together, I have a sense of pride at how she still smiled and how we filled those last 4 years with so much love joy and precious memories
This was the soundtrack of a teenage love summer. It immediately takes me back to that moment and how I felt. That pit in your stomach that is surrounded by happiness, simplicity and innocence. That's what "Fields of Gold" is for me.
This song inspired me to learn English on my own. I craved to know what Sting sings about and to know what story stays behind this wonderful song. It brings back bittersweet memories, various moments of my life.
Knowing Sting's history, this song brings tears to my eyes. He sings about a deep love, for wife, for children, something eternal, from his own experience, something he lost that ought never be lost. I keep switching between this and Fortress Around Your Heart, feeling the profound loss, and how I win or lose my own family every moment depending on whether or not I'm connected to my deep heart which enables me to love and see others and be present for them. Every moment, we give ourselves and those around us either Heaven or Hell, Life or Death, we're either building fortresses of fear and protection or building bridges to fields of gold.
I've always interpreted it as Sting immortalizing the mortal. A lot of things have changed since he fell in love in the "fields of barley, fields of gold" but its a place that will always symbolize that love. People visit it, they have children of their own and then they pass, but the fields remain forever.
@@inessa5923 I love this comment. I believe we're all called to become worthy of immortality. Most of the world will tell you perfection is not possible, I choose not to believe that and strive to see my path there and follow it, and also to see a spark of the perfect in each person and fan that spark.
But Steven, the true miracles in music (not least with something like Duran Duran's "Ordinary World") come when they don't really sit and think too much, but allow the Holy Spirit to take their own talents to a higher and deeper and fuller level. Now let's be clear, nobody denies that these works are by the artists and from their souls, but those souls draw on the Spirit - now as in Biblical times, and again and again it happens that other people (e.g. myself) can see TRANSPARENTLY the depth of what has been produced, even as the makers are not always fully able to do so. You know that "Ordinary World" includes the lyrics: talking softly / lights / ghost / life / cry / survive / Passion / Pride / Cross / heart / my friend / gone away / suffering and greed / Fear / holy war and holy need / sorrow? Most reasonable people looking on would say that is not a religiously-neutral set of words, but who knows if the band even realise that? They themselves thought they were writing a melancholy commemorative song, yet many who hear it feel a kind of inspiring ectasy. The same with "Fields of Gold"... Many, many times we hear artists mumble semi-embarrassedly that "it just kind of came to me". This is all the more true of Brits, for whom self-deprecating embarrassment is a national sport. Of course, all that religious stuff is supposedly a bit too deep for Brits, so they force themselves into loudly-declared atheism again and again. That is probably why the Paraclete - who certainly has Its/His more-playful side - again and again helps Brits to produce divinely-inspired and divinely-inspiring creativity - Ralph Vaughan Williams, The Beatles, Shakespeare, Keane, Elbow, Coldplay, Richard Curtis, Adam Curtis, Sting, and so on (and on) (and on)...
@@crimson6658 No. But I'm not low in any way either. I feel as I feel without the aid of chemicals (except the ones my own body produces of course). I am a scientist and know quite a bit about scientific truth regarding the world and the universe. But like any TRUE scientist (unblinkered), I am on the look out for the (few but not zero) things going on around us that do not add up in line with conventional explanations. I go where the evidence takes me, and am thus interested in the impact certain songs or other pieces of music have on people. I had a religious encounter that was very closely similar to what is described in The Bible in regard to the Holy Spirit, and intriguingly that was not a very dreamlike experience, but really quiet tangible, if of course wonderful. I can't fully explain it, but know it happened and do not dismiss it - all the more so as it has definitely changed the way I see things ... in the direction of "seeing" more. It makes me so happy, and leaves me feeling so connected and in awe, that I actually panic and feel fearful over the prospect that I might return to what I was like before. So thanks for asking, Crimson - and I have no idea whether you got the answer you wanted or not. But bless you anyway!
This is my eastern Ontario winter song. I used to drive to Ottawa through Agonquin Park, of South through the Kawarthas and up through Kalabogie. There are hills everywhere. Beautiful in winter. Every time you'd crest one, there below was a little valley. Each with its own fields of gold. Play this while you drive there. Perfect!
Such a nostalgic feel and very sentimental. Certain masterpieces such as these revoke “mysterious”emotions from childhood(buried/repressed) that can only translate to or identify most with melancholy😢
In terms of melody, I think this is one of the most beautiful songs ever written. It sounds so warm and peaceful ☀️. In these three and a half minutes you can at least try to think of a better world and forget the harsh reality.
This is one of those songs that never go out of style regardless of its age. It still sounds endearing today as it did when it was released back in 1993.
A truly beautiful song. None other than Paul McCartney, he used to be in a big band in the '60s apparently 😊, said it was a song he wished he had written. A song forever 💯
This Song was on as I left the hospital after my father passed away during a medical procedure..Never got to say goodbye. I know he is walking through Fields of Gold..
My dad asked about the lyrics of this song so I bought him the cd. It was the last gift I gave him as he passed away not long after. Now I always think of him when I hear this song.
You'll remember me when the west wind moves upon the fields of barley You'll forget the sun in his jealous sky as we walk in fields of gold So she took her love for to gaze awhile upon the fields of barley In his arms she fell as her hair came down among the fields of gold Will you stay with me, will you be my love among the fields of barley? We'll forget the sun in his jealous sky as we lie in fields of gold See the west wind move like a lover so upon the fields of barley. Feel her body rise when you kiss her mouth among the fields of gold I never made promises lightly and there have been some that I've broken But I swear in the days still left we'll walk in fields of gold We'll walk in fields of gold Many years have passed since those summer days among the fields of barley See the children run as the sun goes down among the fields of gold You'll remember me when the west wind moves upon the fields of barley You can tell the sun in his jealous sky when we walked in fields of gold When we walked in fields of gold, when we walked in fields of gold
My wife and I renewed our vows on our 25th anniversary (2009). This was the song we played at the reception. We were in Germany in 1992. One summer day we picniced on the side of a hill overlooking a wheat field. We were fascinated by the winds movement on the ripe wheat. It was a special day for us. The first time we heard "Fields of Gold" in 1993 it became "Our song," and it has been ever since. Logan, I pray you and your new wife will find the happiness that we have had these past 32 years. It just reminds me of warm summer evenings walking with all the dogs I have ever owned, loved and lost.
I'm not a spiritual person , and in my mind when you die , the lights go out and that's your lot, but if I'm wrong I hope that if just even for one evening I can have them all back together at one time , and we might walk in fields of gold .

This song never gets old. No matter how much I listen, I never get bored.

This song can make the sun weep...
Thanks for the insight, you're right
I think you're right to say many don't understand this song. Your interpretation was very insightful and for sure from now one I'm gonna look at this song differently.
And to think of it.... The sky is said to be jealous because he actually died (since it says "YOU'LL remember me.... You can tell the sun in its jealous sky that we walked it fields of gold"
Towards the end it said "see the children run as the sun goes down..." implying that they got married and had children of their own.
Wrong. Its about whatever I want it to be about, thats art.
@@glennross85 wrong? Sting wrote the track after he bought a house near a barley field. The sunsets and the colours of the field helped inspired the lyrics, along with his love for wife Trudie Styler, whom he married in 1992.
Fields of gold because the wheat/barley fields take on that color as they reflect the sun at a certain time of the day
This song never fails to bring a lump to the throat and a hint of a tear in the eye. One of the most beautiful and haunting songs done by anyone. As I write this - the sun is setting over the beach near home as my two children laugh happily in the other room after a lovely family day. I wish I could freeze this moment in time. How blessed are you?
We have all had those moments. Now my children are grown and gone and I am a widow. I miss being a young mother, wife and my two little boys. My life was so full and it was over way too fast. Now, I am just the old lady who lives down the street.

Also sang about stalking 👀

What a painfully true and profound, beautiful comment, @Josiah B. 🙏🏼❤️
I miss the days where artists sat and thought about lyrics. Lyrics with meaning and not just words. This is beautiful genius poetry! ❤️😥
Shut up, WAP is on a par with Shakespeare's best prose.
@@sidpheasant7585 are you high?

Who can write such songs? Occasionally Sting outdoes himself....this one moves me on so many levels....so simple, yet so profound....I can see myself in the song....
My uncle drowned in a river two days ago. He made a video with my pictures for my birthday when I turned 10 with this song, now I need to make a video for his funeral, I never thought that this song will be used like this. He was so kind, so sweet, so smart, he loved this life, he wanted to do so many things. Let him forever walk in the fields of gold. I didn’t tell you how much I love you. I miss you so much. I don’t know how I’m going to live without you.
So Sorry for your great loss of your Uncle ! Grief is the last act of love we have to give to those we loved ! Where there is deep grief there was great love ❤ Take Care Friend
Crying with you!!!
I'm so sorry for your loss 😒 life is so fragile
He will be waiting for you in the other side! In the real fields of gold!
I am so sorry for your loss. What a beautiful tribute to your uncle. He is smiling down to you from heaven. His love will live on forever in your heart. God bless. 🙏🏻🕊️
"Listening to this song brings back so many memories. Sting's voice is truly iconic and the lyrics are so beautifully written. One of my all-time favorites!"
Unfortunately in my 36 years, I never walked with my beloved among the fields of gold. There is simply no one who would accept my love
Maybe someday it's happen. Sting, thank you for your music, it's still make my lonely soul warm.
I was the same always wanted to just hold her hand and see her smile.
In this life or the next, you will have your moment!
Just have hope and it may happen 🫶
Seriously , one of the greatest song of all time .

Hello Anne, how are you doing today, hope you’re fine and safe from the COVID-19 virus??
This song is truly a time capsule. It captures the feeling of reminiscing about past events, people, places, etc. Great, sensitive song, one of the best of the past 40 years. Thanks, Sting.
In my son's middle school concert kids sang this song.. Instantly took me 27 years back and made me feel young for 5 minutes.. Felt like time machine.. Evergreen.. Can't explain that nostalgic feeling.. Stings voice is so surreal.. One of my favorite lead singers..
I dated a guy who played this music a lot and he told me this song always reminds him of me. Now we both moved countries and I wonder if he still remember that moment.
Am sure he does
for sure....
He does. I do. We all do.
If he plays it a lot he probably tells that to all girls he date. Sorry.
@@proevo1 come on seriously you listen to such good melody and come up giving negative hope.. Hope is all a person has.. let her find him we hope you find him and walk the fields of gold 💙👍👍
So privileged to be around when this English/Cypriot was pouring his heart out in true Mediterranean style... You will never be replicated George!
