One of the best games I played as a kid. I'm a RE/Silent Hill fan so when I played this I fell in love with it.

Played the demo on that blue cover jam pack in 02 and actually begged my folks for it that christmas

I remember getting this game on my ps2 back in the day as a christmas gift in a huge box of ps2 games my old neighbors just gave to me. I don't own the game anymore (or any of the games they gave me in fact aside from Draken the Ancients Gate) but I remember always enjoying this game a lot though I never beat it. I remember the first batch of invisible enemies you can fight always put me on edge and because of that, this game continues to live rent free in my head as a goated ps2 game and one of my favorite ps2 game and even my favorite survival horror game

I played this with my dad. It was so hard I could never finish it, but I have faint memories of seeing him in the later stages of the game. I wish I could play it again for the first time. Getting dropped into that seemingly empty base was just so creepy and interesting.

@@DreamcastEnjoyer Over the years I have stumbled across many games that I don't even remember the names of being talked about on YT or shown in longplays that we actually owned for PS1 and PS2. Games like WinBack for PS2 or Deathtrap Dungeon and Covert Ops: Nuclear Dawn were incredibly memorable games for me and I always tried to finish them and never actually could. It's great to come across a video and having those memories come back.

Great video! I feel like I need to check this one out for sure now. I really like the idea of the infection meter as I always felt like the RE games were missing that when you get attacked. You can heal yourself and you were fine. I think the tension would have been a lot more if there was something else at play as you progressed through the REverse.
The main character's movement looks really good for an early ps2 game as well. I also appreciate the swiss army gun. It really does make me miss when games didn't have to explain something, it just was, and we enjoyed it without criticism or denial. Indies are taking liberty with this more so I am glad it isn't completely gone but AAA studios need to be more fun, let loose, and embrace the jank life from time to time.

And yes, I think you're absolutely right - one of the problems with triple A games is how they all want to feel crafted and polished. I prefer a B-movie approach like this where you just throw in whatever cool stuff you feel like and don't explain it... just have fun! 😄
Exermination, the thing and cold fear are perfect christmas season games. I play them religiously.

literally watching this when this game is right on the other side of my computer. love this game never beat it though couldn't figure out where to go. i have so many games in my backlog from the PS2.
I played this not too long ago with a dear friend of mine, specifically the US version for its acting and Dennis' design which I prefer. Absolutely fantastic experience, and coming from a hardcore horror buff, easily a top survival horror game for me. I can see myself revisiting this every December.
You know, I've never played through the US version- just the opening bit to compare voices. Maybe I should give it a spin next time.

@littlebadassgaming9099 oh yeah that stuff is pretty grisly to be fair. The big monsters didn't bother me but the little bugs are pretty creepy

It feels like almost no one remembers this game. It's easily one of my favourite survival horror along side another semi-forgotten game, Cold Fear.
I just picked up Cold Fear recently- heard good things about it but never checked it out!

Absolutely! I feel lucky too - my dad just randomly picked it up for me one day as he thought I'd like it and I fell in love with the game straight away
I first played this game on a demo disc way back in the PS2's early days and was always fascinated with it but never rented it. Then a couple years back, something jogged my memory that this game existed and so I just straight up bought a copy online for like $5. I don't usually play games like this and I've barely touched Resident Evil but it was worth it after all those years. You have no idea how much I would love for this to get a Steam port, even if its barely updated.

I literally just upscaled the footage here to 2x native and I think it looks pretty good - if Steam did a HD port I'd buy it immediately
@@DreamcastEnjoyer The demo is basically just the first chunk of the game except you start with a couple gun add-ons and once you reach the storage area, it opens the elevator immediately and you fight the boss without going around. The demo then ends after beating the boss.
That's a sensible choice, I guess. There's virtually no bad parts so they could have used any section really!
Just bought a mint condition copy of this along with a mint condition copy of C-12 Final Resistance on PS1. The reason why I mention the latter is because these 2 games had advertising slips recommending each other. Gorgeous bit of nostalgia for me and just a super rare oddity

I *almost* bought this game so so so many times, but bad reviews of the time and it being a relatively early release in the PS2 catalog always held me back. Shame, because it actually looks like I would have enjoyed it a lot.

This is gonna sound funny, I just bought this yesterday for like $15, and out of all the titles on the shelf, while the title sounded generic, something told me there's more then meets the eye. I picked it up, title cover, nothing to look at, turn over to the back of the case, HOLY SH*T I'M BUYING THIS!
I loved this game! It also didn’t hurt that my namessake makes an appearance in the form of a mutated monster whose dog tags feature my name. 😊

I remember begrudgingly buying this when there was practically nothing else out to play, expecting a poor RE rip off that I would want to use the return policy for. What a great surprise it turned out to be!

Just played through this one recently, I thought it was surprisingly good. Feels like a resident evil game set in the world of john carpenter's The Thing, with some MGS thrown in. Definitely ahead of its time in some aspects, but certain things held it back for me.
For one, I felt like at certain points I wasn't too sure where to go, and since basically the entire map is open to you in the mid-late stages of the game you can be wandering around for a long time before you figure it out. It's not the worst as the maps not exactly massive, but with having to wait through that animation every time you open a door and all the loading screens - getting around can take a while.
The voice acting was also not great as you mentioned. Some of the conversations felt like they were talking in slow motion, and at least in the PAL version that voice effect when they're talking over the radio is absolutely ear piercing when you play it on an old TV.
Also, I found the final boss to be ridiculously hard. I know as the final boss you would be expecting some difficulty, but I'm generally decent at games and I breezed through the rest of the game, but I got stuck for a hot minute on the final fight and it wasn't the fun kind of stuck where at least it's interesting. Cool idea for the fight but it ended up being just extremely repetitive with nearly impossible to dodge projectiles, and the third phase part just awkwardly stands still randomly firing bullets around in circles while bombing you with those same seeker missiles.
In the end though very cool game, the ability to swap in and out components on your gun was fun, the atmosphere and music were pretty good, and I liked collecting everything and reading all the notes. I love games that reward you for collecting things. (If you collect all the dog tags and retrieve Roger's knife you get a new game+ mode with tougher enemies while you start with some upgrades and a lot of ammo)
I loved this game as well an for some reason I kept playing till I found glitches an hidden rooms on my channel if you ever want see them.

I found this game as an ex-rental in a tiny Spar shop on the Isle of Mull of all places in 2010 or 2011, and unfortunately I didn't give it a proper go, despite being really interested in the advertised mutation mechanic. Fast forward to a few days ago, and I randomly remembered it so watched a few videos, including this one, before picking it up for a few quid on Ebay. Looking forward to playing through it, after finishing both Headhunter games!

As much as I struggled with this game, I enjoyed it when I was a kid. I was always a fan of various works of Stephen King, so Extermination sat with me just right at the young age of 10. (I don't know why, but I watched The Shining a lot!) I struggled to beat it back then, though....because at the time, I had no memory card for my PS2 yet...so every playthrough was a "one-life chance" playthrough. When I finally got a playstation 3 in 2007 though, I finally took the game serious enough to beat the game, that final boss was really hard to beat without the rocket launcher, but somehow I did it (I don't remember how)
If I remember, the gun let you switch the fireing rate by parts. I always go single and full auto.
I would love to see this game ported to steam or tossed on the psn store

Extermination is like "The Thing meets Metal Gear Solid." This is one of the best horror games on the PS2. Not perfect, but it stands out on its own and is different from Resident Evil.
That description just about nails it. It is my favourite PS2 horror game, I think, but there is definitely some serious competition there!
I remember being stuck with the final boss for weeks, I borrowed the game to a friend of mine and finished it within a week, I was like how did you made it through the final boss?!!, and he was like dude you just have to find all the parts for the rocket launch, me: rocket launcher?? 😂
Yea that final boss is brutal! No idea how it could be done without the ultimate launcher

This one was actually really good. I had a lot of fun with it back in the day. Cheezy writing and voice acting aside, it did a lot of things right. And more than most of the genre was doing at the time. Still not as compelling as RLH - Run Like Hell, another sci-fi survival horror that came out not much later, but I remember it fondly. I never knew the creator of Deadly Premonition did this one, and nor did I know there was two different English versions.
I loved the cheesy voice acting, but yeah it's a great game and pretty original for the time. A few people have mentioned RLH now so I really gotta check it out 😊
Honestly RLH is truly a hidden jem. Great soundtrack, great voice acting great story. Only down side was its abrupt ending and no sequel to resolve said ending. That one needs to come back.

I just bought a copy at a local game store for $15 was gonna play some until i noticed the X & Triangle button dont work, basically i was stuck at the title screen😅😭

I feel like the only person who had a very difficult time navigating this game. I thought the map system was absolute garbage and I didn't understand what the hell the game wanted me to do more than once. Spent a lot of time running in circles wondering where the hell was that one door I had written off. Granted I was a little stoned but I've beaten all of the Resident Evil games the original Silent Hill last week which had a fantastic map and so many others without getting bogged down like this. Something about this game's navigation does not sit right with me
It's tough for me to say! I beat this game loads of times as a kid with help from my dad... so now I'm playing it on my own I just remember where to go haha
It really was ahead of its time.

I have never heard of this game but it reminds me of Psi ops also for the ps2 I can't remember anything expect a few things like you ended up with psy powers and one of them gave you control of random enemies and you can aim the cursor behind you and when you shoot you would unalive yourself and that was awesome cause if you undid your mind control that enemie would still be alive and well that would attack you lol so it was easier to do that especially with the harder ones who could take alot of damage and the shotguns in that game where God tier

@@DreamcastEnjoyer i have a copy of it but they made a game called Hungry Ghosts thats super interesting. Its hard to find information about the game, let alone Deep Space, but its about your journey through the land of the dead to your final destination either Hell or Reincarnation based on your deeds during game play. I never made it very far but its neat.

Loved this ever since I played it on PlayStation Underground's Winter 2001 _Jampack._ I think the voice acting and the look of Dennis are better in the PAL version, though, aside from Dennis' suit oddly being black instead of the gray and white camo.
Yea I like the PAL version just cause its what I grew up with, but I am planning on trying the US version one day!

You really should replay it using the US version, and if you do, use the emulator on pc and jack up the resolution, I beat it again just the other day in 4k and it looks really frickin good. I’ve played all 3 versions and the US Dennis voice is my favorite, more emotions, more chad like as well, I mean personally most if not all the voices just came off better. if you do play it, stream it or upload the play through and we’ll watch
