This was the very first horror game I ever played, and as clunky and B movieish as it could be, I LOVED IT. I'm so glad you did a video on this, it was so nostalgic to see.
Extermination, i used to play this game when i was a kid, the only thing i remember is the start of the snowplace, the spinning blades and alien monsters crawling from the walls to killing your partner as he was shooting at them. I think thats as far as i got before i stopped playing it.
I've bought this game at least twice, though never getting to finish it, yet always had a blast with it. Loved the setting, the weapon configuration system, and a lot of the ideas I found in it. Nothing ground breaking, but fun all the same! Glad you're covering it!
To be completely fair, the AR platform can allow for outright insane modularity. They made a really great choice in focusing in that. You don't need a sidearm, you have all the gun you need. The underbarrel attachments are nice for those few instances you might need a little something extra. I'm also surprised you didn't go more into that your ammo capacity is limited by your magazines. With most horror games, none of those matter because you can just handload your gun of choice with time frozen. Keeping mags in mind, you learn how much it takes to put down foe X, Y and Z. Then you can plan out your next move and go "yeah... I should be able to handle that". The only games that I recall off the top of my head who also go that route are Receiver and Receiver 2. Severely underrated mechanic. The infection system was also pretty cool because some attacks would barely harm you but biotox your shit up. Alternatively there'd be some attacks that might kill you in a handful of hits but at least they won't make you burst from the inside out. It was fun. Near the end it got a little goofy but you really got to feel the power of a customized AR that you're proficient with, with a mindset you wouldn't really put into other games since they tend to overgive ammo.
I considered the important parts of a survival horror to be resource management (ammo, medkids, batteries) and horror/terror themes, fix campera angles are a cool element, but not an obligation, inventory is one of My favourite parts of survival horror, but again not the only way to do resource management
For being such a new channel you already have a dope formula going, nice job dude. You should make the intro a Mortician song or something, would fit your name plus the whole "old school survival horror plus Death Metal" thing. Would you do Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare? It's technically also a PS1 game but it's most well known (and arguably best) iteration is for the PS2
yo, I fucking love mortician 😂 i’ll have to see what that sounds like through a gross fuzz bass haha thanks for the kind words! Alone in the dark, a new nightmare is on the PS2 so it’s on the list! since it’s on both consoles i’ll definitely be comparing them when i get to that one. thanks again!
Do you have any thoughts on doing modern survival horror games like Tormented Souls or Signalis? Or are you planning for ps2 ones? I also recommend Ku-on, Siren and The Thing tie in game. (I'm not sure if the last two count as survival horror though)
yo! no plans to limit myself to only PS2 games, this is just going to be one series that I do! I’ll have some modern stuff on the channel very soon! (siren, kuon and the thing all count and will all be included in this series at some point 👊)
@@Mortuary_Gaming Another series I recommend is Shadow tower. It's like king's field (a first person dungeon crawlers) but with more of an emphasis on resource management and that age old debate of whether or not to sacrifice health or ammo
Hey man, just found your channel and subscribed. Good video. Here are some suggestions for PS2 survival horror game reviews: -Kuon -Ghosthunter -Forbidden Siren -The Suffering -Lifeline -Rule of Rose -Darkwatch
I really think you should do Kuon or Rule of Rose next! They are some of the rarest survival horror games on the PS2, and I feel like they don't get talked about enough except when it comes to how expensive they are to get ahold of physically.
this game scared the shit out of me as a kid-teen and the most interesting thing about this game is that europe got a special version with different dub and character designs this was my silent hill origins
Dudeeee I just found your channel through a recommendation on UA-cam and godarnit. What a amazing content you have. This is the third video I'm watching. The edition and how you manage to talk with the devs from these games is something not everyone can do. Congrats. And btw. I would love to see you doing a video about Galerians: Ash. Just because I love almost unknown horrors games.
it’s on the list, so stay tuned! i’m not sure when i’m gonna get there, but it counts as a PS2 horror game so i’ll absolutely get to it. thanks so much for the kind words!
Loving the energy and commentary on this channel! I'm both a total baby and bad at video games, so it's always fun to hear someone thoughtfully dissect a horror game I wouldn't know about otherwise.
I haven't played Extermination since around 2005 and really enjoyed it! Used to rent it a few times when it released in 2001 and thought it was a well done game, despite some of its shortcomings. I just really love that early PS2 charm of a lot of those games back then. Loved your video and just subscribed!
So, hang on a second, do I need to learn how to "forgive," or to "forget?" 🤔 I suddenly feel like Melvin Udall... "What if this is as good as it gets?"
If I remember correctly there are some big differences between PAL and NTSC-U release of this game including a completely different voice cast......and the protagonist having a different hairstyle.
Played this back when it was new. Enjoyed it at the time but outside classic tank controls (Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Onimusha), I have little tolerance today for games like this where the controls are so dated. I'm just too spoiled by modern controls to tolerate that level of jank anymore. Hope that doesn't make me a bad person.
Nicd video that was randomly recommended to me. I really ebjoyed the game. You can also get infected and had to get cured within a short timespan, otherwise you'd trabsfom and get a game over. That adds to the survival horror.
The Thing The Video Game is a personal favourite of mine, but admittedly it has been yonka donks since i last played it so maybe a sense of nostalgia with those red rose tinted glasses are clouding proper judgement. either way, I think it's a title worth checking out
Hey! Love the channel! Funny and insightful. You must check out Ghost hunter. It's a weird survival horror for the ps2. I had some good memories of it but maybe I'm wrong! Keep up with the great work!!!
Stumbled upon this channel today, and I'm very impressed with your videos. Are you currently limiting yourself to PS2 survival horror games? I'd love to see your take on Silent Hill, starting with the first on PS.
thanks for the kind words! Right now, I’m not limiting myself to anything, this is just one series that I’m doing, I’m going to be doing multiple as time goes on!
Did absolutely anyone else find this map system clunky and absolutely useless? I had the worst time navigating this game and I just beat OG Silent Hill last week which had a fantastic map which I never had to guess where to go with proper exploration. This game had me running around in circles trying to remember where the fuck was that one door I had written off. Map shows you where you are in a specific area but shows you nothing about how it connects to the surrounding areas. I fucking hated navigating this game. Am I the only one? I might be a tad bitter because I beat this game yesterday and ran around for hours wondering where the fuck I was supposed to go haha
@@DeathmetalSe7en i’m actually surprised i didn’t mention it! Maybe i felt weird about criticizing 3 game maps in a row for my first three videos or something, idk but you’re definitely right haha
